Keir simmons, nbc news, osaka, japan. Breaking news to tell you about right now. Take a look at this. This black cloud of smoke there, as you see. This is in santa clara near the airport. It is near the intersection of el camino and scott street. Right now we are working to find out what is happening in this area. But as you can see, the thick cloud of smoke as well as flames there burning. We do have a crew heading to that scene right now. This has been going on for a few minutes that weve been able to see. What it is is still the question this morning. As well as how it all started. Of course we have been having dry conditions here in the bay area which has really been fuelling the flames. That is why theyve been advising people to not light things out, especially fireworks and people been doing those around the area because fourth of july is coming up. But again, this is happening in santa clara near el camino and scott street. We have a crew headed to the scene to figure out what is going on and well continue to monitor and give you updates during the midday newscast and social media as soon as we get that information. Well also coming up for you, a startling report card on an east bay school. Millions of dollars not spent in the classroom and now the Oakland School district is responding. And a break in the case of a missing California College student in utah. Who police are looking at. Were back with breaking news for you . Santa clara right now. Take a look at this. The thick cloud of black smoke and the flames you could see spewing there. So were finding out that this is in santa clara. This is near el camino and scott street and this is some type of construction site where this is happg. Canee from the live shot that we saw water spewing there on that, which we can tell you that firefighters are there on the scene trying to get this under control. But certainly this is a dangerous situation, especially since weve been having the dry conditions throughoutwhis start question. Were trying to figure that out. And exactly what is under construction at this time. But a dangerous situation there. That fire has grown, those flames that weve seen over the last three minutes or so. But still firefighters there on the scene. The blackness or thickness is seeming like it is pulling back a little bit because firefighters are there on the scene trying to get control. Meteorologist kari hall is dealing with the wind and the dryness in the area. Yeah, look at the flames how high theyre going up in the air. And we cant see the flames moving around or the smoke going straight up and we see this in the type of weather setup we have where the air is rising. So it is taking it fairly high winds have been very also noticing that some of the planes are still taking off close to that area. And so as we look at the wind speeds right now. Wind speeds have been very light. Only at about five or six miles per hour. And it is coming in from the northwest so that is something that well have to watch here as we go into the rest of the afternoon. Hopefully that isnt spread in more of the area because our winds will be picking up a little bit into the rest of the day sand anything just to the south and east of that area may see the flames spreading into that direction. But once again, from that live shot that we just had, that were not seeing them being blown around either in either direction. So really, dangerous it looks like there with those big flames there, marcus, that continues to cause that smoke billowing up in the air. We want to go back to that picture if we could. Because if you look to the left, you could see moments ago, you could kind of see what firefighters have water spewing on the fire and the thickness has reduced a bit. But the flames are still very high. Right now we have scott budman there he scene. Scott, tell us about where this is and if you could tell what is on fire right now . Do we have scott . Were going to work to get scott there on the phone. But again dealing with a number of structures on fire. Like you say, a big column of smoke and where it is is El Camino Real and scott drive. So that intersection in santa clara. And right now that intersection is closed off. A lot of traffic is being diverted as you could imagine to other streets as the smoke starts to spread and as fire trucks try to get in there, youre looking at some of it when there are other fire trucks that are getting to that area right now. But really theyre trying to keep as many cars and people away from there because this fire is still really burning quite a bit. Scott, i dont think we were able to hear you, but do we know what this building or construction site is . Ns reporter i dont know yet. Re boardst i it was. Were trying to get closer. But it is pretty crowded area when it comes to buildings and homes and businesses in that area. But ain is el camino and scott boulevard, that intersection and right now everything is trying to be diverted away because not only is that intersection pretty heavily built up, but there are a lot of homes nearby in streets and right now im sure with the fire crews are trying to keep this thing from spreading to any of the nearby homes. Scott, when it comes with traffic, you said it is a very busy area. Have they blocked off streets totally or just kind of allowing just a small number of cars to go through at a time where you are . Reporter it is a good question, marcus. Right around the fire, some of the streets are now blocked off. So try to stay away from the e camino real area near scott boulevard but other streets nearby are really choked off and it took us a long time to get down one of the streets toward El Camino Real. So it is an area to avoid. Not just because of the safety factor, because there is a big fire, but because a lot of the traffic is really been slowed down. Theyre also trying to, i think, keep a little bit of the street open to let more fire crews in and so theyre just trying to keep the regular traffic away. Scott, from what you could tell, are we close to any homes . Because kari was talking about wind conditions out there. Is this close to homes, maybe other businesses where people are currently working inside now . Reporter el camino is a crowded place. Andf this area near scott boulevard, it is not that far from santa clara and you have restaurants and homes and body shops. There are a lot of auto work done here. And so the wind shifts a whole lot and right now im not feeling a whole lot of wind to be honest, but if this gets out of control, there could be a lot of homes threatened and i think they want to get this down as quickly as they can. And were getting word that we were telling you this is in santa clara, near the airport. No airport traffic has been affected at this time because of the fire. But just look at it right now. You could see the thickness of the smoke. Would you imagine that could cause some sish some issues for aan airport traffic is affected because of youfire but you could see the en the fire. E stream of water now here is another picture that were receiving from that area. Closer look at those flames, the intensity of those flames is just scary what firefighters are dealing with. Now, scott, how close are you to this fire . And exactly what can you see as far as what firefighters are doing and as far are people standing near there . Maybe they had to evacuate if they were working . Reporter yeah, there is not much left of that one building. You could see there is still a lot of flames and were just a few blocks away and it is big chaos getting traffic out of the way but people are coming out of Office Buildings and areas around here. This is lincoln street nearby, there are a lot of offices and partments here and people are Office Buildings in the area scott was saying there are where people are walking out. Reporter it is near Shopping Centers, it is near homes. Ises with the cell service there. Im sure you could imagine what is going on there. But right now this is the fire that is happening in santa clara. This is near El Camino Real and scott street. We could see this is an area where there are a lot of different Shopping Centers and there are people, scott was telling us, nearby coming out to see this. But at this time we know this is near the airport and not altered any of the air traffic in that area but certainly in that area of El Camino Real and scott street as scott was telling us, that they are shutting down some of the traffic in that area. Now look at this video that were getting there from the scene. This is a construction site on fire. You could see the intensity of the flames and thick smoke. And we do have someo of what were doing rosemary this the airport. Affectingra right now at but im sure you are keeping close en on here . Rosemary . Okay. We do have someone that were working to get on line now so we can find out exactly good morning. Okay, rosemary, are you there. Im here. Good morning. Good morning to you. So as were dealing with right now, were watching this fire on the screen right now. Thick flames and clouds of smoke. Im sure yall are monitoring this near the airport so what are you doing at this time. Sure. Were fully aware of this and the smoke is quite visible from the airfield and im looking out the wonts a out the window it is gaining attention from those change in flight paths if that changes well alert the traveling public understand why it is up. And how soon would you alert any passengers if a change and the effect on a sure. Were constantly in touch with our controllers and the air Traffic Control tower is just on the same side of where that plume of smoke is so they could likely just look over to that location from their 200 feet perch up in the air. So well continue to communicate with air Traffic Control. If there are impacts well alert the media to get the word out and our social media channels, facebook and twitter as a start. And then of course well be working with our carriers. But so far it los isolated and, again, well update the public through the media if there are anyyou so mu. And asre making it hardero area sky i could tell youm poinm looking at right now, i could see the stream of water there from fire engine trucks. That is going there on the flames. And it looks as if the thickness of that smoke is reducing, but the flames still very intense there. As firefighters continue to monitor this. This is in santa clara near El Camino Real and scott road. And we do know that this was a building under construction that is now on fire. Scott budman reporting here on nbc bay area was there on the scene and he said it looks like the building in itself is a total loss. You could barely tell what it was going to be or working on there, but still as you could see by the flames, you could imagine this is very intense. Upl phone video to show the intensity of how close people were able to get to the flames and see the magnitude of the fire and firefighters there on the scene trying to get control of this construction site fire in santa clara near the airport. Now the fact that it is near the airport and the thickness of the smoke in the air has not affected Airline Traffic there at the airport. We spoke with rosemary with San Jose International airport and she said as of right now their still monitoring the situation but not affecting air traffic at this time. As far as road traffic, that is another story. Scott budman on the scene telling us areas, scott and el camino and clay street, all streets will be skt will be affected by traffic. If you have to go in that area and you need to expect that it will be an issue when it comes to driving there. Because firefighters have aetti control of this fire. Those flames right now, we have been covering this for at least 20 serity of itgh. I as you could see the flames there still burning. But the smoke and i cant tell you what that means but i believe it means that firefighters have gotten a little bit of control of the fire as you could tell many of the fire engines on the scene spewing water on to the fire to get control of that. But the flames certainly intense. This is going to cause issues for anyone in that area. We do know that there are businesses in that area where people are working there. Scott budman was telling us that some people have been coming outside to see what is going on that is close by to where this fire is happening there at santa clara in santa clara near el camino and scott road. Nearby businesses but still when it comes gotten word of checking. No problem with air traffic with hat thick smoke could cause problems but as of now, no air traffic affected by this. But i could imagine many fire trucks and firefighters there covering this from all angles. Ive seen water coming from fire engine trucks from many sides of the fire as firefighters try to get control of it. But here is another picture from twitter. A scary situation for anybody. And you could see the electrical lines nearby which im sure is a scary situation and could cause them to cut power off or affect power in some of the areas nearby. That is something that firefighters and businesses need to be mindful of as that fire continues to burn here in santa clara. This is near the airport at el camino and scott road. We do know it is a fouralarm fire so you could imagine just the intensity and the man power being done around the area to get the fire undertay clear of that area because they need to have that air clear so fire officials and emergency crews can get in and fight it aggressively and effectively to get that fire under control and to prevent it from spreading. Meteorologist kari hall was talking about the weather conditions. Weve been talking about the dryness of the conditions here in the bay area recently and the advisories from firefighters to not light cigarettes or things that were experiencing. Of course fourth of july is coming up and those are issues d warnings that we have been dealing with for some time. So you could imagine why it is so important for firefighters to keep this fire isolated and under control right now. It is continuing to burn. It is a severe burn right now. Td theyre in that isolated area there at el camino and scott road. And look at this. This is another angle from sky ranger. As you could see, just the angle of that. And if you look to your right and the to left, you could see where the firefighters are putting the water there on that fire. It is kind of hard to tell there. But it is still a very intense fire. As it continues to burn. We have been able to find out that this is a construction site. What was under construction, we dont know at this time. But, of course, firefighters are still trying to get this now the video that we were able to see, Ryan Beddingfield was the one who recorded that i am. Brian, so tell me where you are when thisppen, what you cou tell us what you saw . Yeah, i was having breakfast at panera at the corner of el camino and scott and there was just a strong burning outside and there was it looked like a small little smoke cloud. It didnt look like anything serious. And within a matter of minutes, maybe even seconds, the whole building just became completely engulfed. Now im sure do you frequent this area often and do you know what this building was . Was it a it was it was an apartment complex and it was nearby completion. In fact, i had taken note just the other day of how much progress they made in such a short time. So they had to be near the finishing touches on it. And you just hope everyone got out okay. Now around what time did you first notice
