Batman first appeared in Detective Comics number 27 back in 1939. 80. Wow. I dont know why this is going to sound weird but the bat signal reminds me of when i was a kid in a room, the flashlight with little different hearts and stars. And shine it on the wall. I wasnt a comic kid. I wasnt either but that was cool. It was cool. 80 years. Shout out to batman. Hes going to be dealing with some interesting skies if he has to fight off any crimes or yes, fly, wait, superman did. Microclimate highs today are going to be interesting. Look at this shot of San Francisco. This is supposed to be a shot of the Golden Gate Bridge but theres so much fog that you cant even see it. So lets get right to whats going to be affecting our temperatures for today and thats a system to the Pacific Northwest. We have this trough right here, ill zoom this in closer, its going to bring our temperatures down a little bit and also going to bring a lot more cloud cover. Yesterday it was hot, it was sunny, it was dry. Today were talking about a little bit more of cloud cover and lingering in through the inland areas and temperatures running a few degrees cooler. Lets get right to the temperatures. Because of that system off to our north were also going to notice an increase in some winds tonight. San francisco 73, very comfortable, no major changes there. Look at the interior valleys, concord 87, antioch 88, down through the south bay and san jose 86 degrees. Santa cruz still going to be warm at about 84 degrees. I really want to get you into your weather setup so we can go through the changes were expecting. Its going to be seasonable today. I want to turn your attention towards this because sunday, monday, tuesday into wednesday we get this ridge of High Pressure thats going to warm us up and also going to kick up the concern for fire danger, because were getting a dry wind thats going to move in over the bay area. Once that does move in, were going to have to keep a close eye on all of those hilltop areas which is why a fire weather watch is expected to begin tomorrow at 9 00 p. M. For the north bay and east bay hills, the dry northerly wind is going to dry out the humidity levels and remember, any time were seeing hot temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds it is the perfect mix for elevated fire danger. Well see the wind increase into Tuesday Morning and our hourbyhour outlook right now shows 80s and 90s for the bay into monday, at about 3 00. You can see the temperature trend through here, but look how much hotter it gets as we inch into tuesday, and wednesday when that High Pressure rolls in, our temperatures start to jump to 97 in concord. 96 in santa rosa, and remember, those east bay hills and all of the hilltop areas have still plenty of dry brush, so were going to keep a very close eye. This is looking way out into the future, as that High Pressure rolls in, into monday, tuesday and wednesday, by next weekend, we have a nearby system thats going to bring the chance of seeing some rain friday into next weekend. Early estimates right now for the models show not that impressive in terms of rainfall totals but it will be just enough to where were definitely going to notice it and also bring sierra snow. I want to give a shout out to san jose, because i know they have their sixth annual viva calle walk. They close several miles, several stretches of streets in the downtown san jose area specifically for this festival and everybody can roam the streets, not worrying about cars on the road. It takes place from 10 00 a. M. To 3 00 p. M. And the temperatures are comfortable today, 83 degrees. Again, a combo of sun and clouds and here is your setup for the next seven days. This gives an explainer of what i spoke about earlier. Remember, tomorrow is our First Official day at fall, and the dry fire danger really kicks up into tuesday. We get a significant drop in the temperatures by wednesday and increase in cloud cover heading into friday because of that nearby system, and then look at saturday, stay tuned, were monitoring the chance of seeing rain in San Francisco and throughout the entire bay area, so we go from 80s to 90s, upper 90s, back down to the 80s and talking about a cool 72. To see this incredible material, to see the size of the rivets and the pattern of the rivets, you can see the word bethlehem written repeatedly from the legacy of the piece being built in the 30s. Reporter the art piece is temporary, not like the span which carried passengers from 1936 to 2015. People thought it would last forever. We never quite know what the future holds. Reporter through art, the span builds on from joshua tree to truckee to petaluma. Theyre being made into new experiences. The battle between california and President Donald Trump reached a new pitch this past week. The president instructed the Environmental Protection agency to revoke californias longstanding ability to set auto emoigss standards that are more firm than federal rules. Nbc bay area political analyst Larry Gerston rejoins us now. This seems surprising, these were policies since the reagan administration. Whats this all about . Get ready to rumble. Lets put it that way exactly. It has to do with something, think about automobile mileage requirements, that kind of thing which have been periodically established by the Environmental Protection agency for a long time. A few years ago in an orderly way the Obama Administration set a requirement of 54. 5 miles per gallon for cars built in 2025, many years from now. The Trump Administration roen y recently rejected that mandate for a considerably lower option of 37 miles per gallon. The president claims his version would make it less expensive for Automobile Companies to retool, which they have to do, maybe 2,000 a car, rather than the 3,000 per car, which would take place under the Obama Administration. As a result, he says that would benefit consumers. Thats the president s angle. Okay, so i have to ask, is this just about Consumer Prices or do you think theres something more there . Suspicious, perhaps . Well, youre right. Oh. The trump critics contend something different. They contend that this change comes at a great environmental cost. Experts have determined that the trump recommendation would result in a difference of get this 6 billion tons, with b billions, 6 billion tons of Greenhouse Gas pollution over the life time of those cars, this is particularly important in california which has a long history of suffering from air pollution. In fact, seven out of ten most polluted by air areas, urban areas in the nation are in california. By the way, the san jose, San Francisco, oakland area ranks as the eighth most polluted region in the country. Let that sink in. Thats disturbing. We just came off a week of looking at our climate crieses here at nbc bay area. So how does california deal with this issue . It sounds like it is problematic. Yep. Theres an answer. At least there has been an answer in the past. So the 1970 Environmental Protection act, thats what were talking about here, which was signed into law by the way by republican president richard nixon, granted california the right to receive federal waivers if the state passed stricter tail pipe emission laws, laws that would be better, if you might put it that way, to the federal rule. Thats where the miles per gallon and tail pipe emissions come in. Since 1970, california has requested and received 45 waivers, and the Automobile Companies have accepted those waivers as national standards. But this time, the Trump Administration has refused to grant a waiver, laiming that the different tail pipe requirements would be unnecessarily costly to Automobile Companies and consumers, which gets back to the figures we made earlier. So why is there such a focus on these tail pipe requirements . Thats the heart of the emissions issue. Thats the heart of it. Tail pipe emissions are the single largest source of Greenhouse Gas emissions in the united states. 30 of the nations Greenhouse Gas emissions and 40 of californias Greenhouse Gas emissions come from automobile and truck tail pipe emissions. Theres a question of health. Recent study by mit found that 21,000 californians died prematurely each year because of air pollution related diseases. So when you consider the impact of Greenhouse Gas emissions on everything from Climate Change to respiratory diseases, were talking about a critically harmful element in society. Thats disturbing, 21,000 premature deaths. So do you think this is just a problem between the Trump Administration and california, or is there more . Actually, there are 13 states that go along with california. They agree with californias approach. Together with california the plop police stati populations of these states account for onethird of the nations residents. Compounding this issue for the president is a deal between california and four Automobile Companies to produce automobiles by 2025, the new date, at the 54. 5 milepergallon rate. The Trump Administration declared this agreement null and void. Null and void because of its intention to implement the lower miles per gallon requirement leading to the higher tail pipe emissions. The irony here is, and there is a rich irony, the irony here is that californias director of automobile emissions parallels the Trump Administration value of states rights when it comes to all kinds of things. Remember the president with state rights reduced National Requirements on a range of policy areas including mine safety, water pollution, land toxicity in favor of state management, yet here hes insisted on a National Requirement with tail pipe emissions. Very interesting. Larry, as always, wish we had more time, but boy, thanks for that insight. Well be right back after this. White house whitle blower controversy, heavy hitters make or take jabs on sunday morning shows. Plus monday marks the beginning of fall. Will the temperatures fall . Kari has an eye on your forecast. Join us monday morning 4 30 to 7 00. Good morning, its 7 53. Buenos dee was, its sunday, the last day of summer and were in it with a bit of an interesting weather pattern. We have the fog rolling through in San Francisco, look at this beautiful shot from our san bruno cam, and you can definitely see the fog if youre anywhere near the Golden Gate Bridge. You can see it kind of look at this, you can see the San Francisco skyline peeking through and all around it, all of that fog. Now, if youre going to be further inland, youll get a combo of a little bit more cloud cover and also cooler temperatures. Here it is, here is the reason why. We have satellite radar, showcasing that trough just off to the Pacific Northwest bringing in some rain in societile and portland, but were going to get that tail end keep us cooler and cloudy through the afternoon. Were on a little bit of a cooling trend for today by a couple of degrees. Lets get right to those microclimate highs so you can plan out your afternoon. Yesterday was really hot, today its going to be hot but just a little bit cooler in some spots, not all. San jose 86 degrees. East san jose 89. Los gatos 88, so notice how were not really seeing as many 90s as we had yesterday, but were still in the upper 80s for concord. 87 degrees, pleasanton inching near the 90s and near oakland we cool down significantly, yesterday we were in the 80s. Today were going to be in the upper 70s. Along the peninsula i expect breezy conditions as well for the afternoon. Redwood city 83. San mateo 78. If youre going to be in San Francisco, were going to be topping out in the low 70s. Again well keep that fog rolling through a little bit longer through the evening. Santa rosa 87 degrees. Novato 85 and point reyes 70 degrees. We have a lot going on this week. Weve got the fire danger that is going to start to dominate in our forecast, starting tomorrow, especially, because that High Pressure rolls back in, and those dry north to offshore winds paired with the hot temperatures certainly raises that high fire risk. Were expecting that monday through wednesday so were going to be keeping a very close eye especially in the Higher Elevation areas for the north bay mountains and the east bay hills. A fire watch will be in place starting tomorrow night, and then yes, rain chances, so this is looking way out ahead into friday and saturday. It looks like we get a system that could bring the chance of seeing rain and sierra snow as early as saturday into next sunday. Also bringing significant cooling to parts of the bay area, again, i want to emphasize that the fire watch begins tomorrow at 9 00 p. M. For the north bay and east bay hills. Were talking about dry northerly winds, low humidity, always a cause for concern in the bay area especially because we are in fire season. Again if youre heading out to viva calle san jose, that takes place from 10 00 a. M. To 3 00 p. M. Near the streets in downtown san jose, they close off the streets so plan accordingly if youre driving down there because they close off a lot of streets. The next seven days, fall officially starts tomorrow, kira, cant believe it. Im ready for fall. Fall is probably my favorite season. I could see that. You like candles. Candles. As i know and Pumpkin Spice lattes, right . Thanks, vianey. Finally this morning, everyone should have a friend like klay thompson. The warriors guard gave Zsa Zsa Pachulia a rollsroyce. Zaza just retired from the nba and works in the Warriors Front Office as a consultant, so thompson got him a really nice retirement gift. Thompson is recovering from his torn acl he suffered in this years nba finals. He is expected to return to the court sometime after the allstar break in february. Clearly there are levels to this gift giving, because i typically gift like a bottle of ne and not like a super fancy bottle of wine. Wine is wine to me. Yes. Yes. But a rollsroyce. Wow. Not to mention, yes, he retired, but theyre still going to be seeing each other on a semidaily basis. A good friend to have and i appreciate you no matter what wine you give to me.
