Made july 25th, from the white house residence by President Trump to president zelensky ukrai ukraine, the call lasted about 30 minutes. And let me walk you through the call after having read the notes of the call. Trump begins by congratulating zelensky for his election victory and midway through the call says, quote, id like you to do us a favor those because our untry has been through a lot and ukraine knows a lot about it, id like you to find out what happened with this whole situation with ukraine. They say crowd strike. I guess you have one of your wealthy people, the server, they say ukraine has it. Now, frankly, it is hard to tell exactly what the president means. Jchlt doj officials werent able to shed light on it. But perhaps he is thinking that somebody in ukraine has one of the missing clinton email servers. Frankly, it is impossible to tell. And then there is one reference to biden in this call. And by the way, the entire transcript is about five pages even these the call lasts for 30 minutes. It is a back and forth between the two of them. Trump said this, he says i heard you had a prosecutor who was vee very good and shut down which is really unfair and he says, quote, there a lot of talk about bidens son. What biden stopped the properties kugs and prosecution. And a lot of people want to find out about that, so whatever you could come with the attorney general would be great. Bring biden bragged that he stopped the prosecution, so if you could look into it, it sounds horrible to me. This is the only mention in the call about biden and zelensky applies that he is appointing a new prosecutor who will soon, quote, look into the situation. Now, here is what happened according to the doj officials. Somebody in the Intel Community heard about this call, not firsthand. But the intel official said he or she heard about it from white house officials. And complained to the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community suggesting that it could be a violation of Campaign Finance law, something was soliciting a foreign contribution. But the Justice Department office of Legal Counsel concl e concluded that the complaint didnt meet the in aer row technical standard for passing on a complaint from the Intel Community to congress because it wasnten an intelligence activ and didnt involve an intel gechbts employee. But, and this is something that we learned today here, the Justice Department said the appropriate thing to do was to refer the matter for the Justice Departments Criminal Division and that is what happened. And according to justice officials here, they say this morning that the Criminal Division including career employees concluded that there was no Campaign Finance violation in this call. They did so after looking at the call, talking to people at the white house about the call, and they say they concluded that what the president was asking ukraine to do did not amount to a thing of value which is what the law would require in order to be solicitation of a foreign contribution to a campaign. And so doj says it asked the white house for notes of the conversation and that the white house voluntarily turned them over and this conclusion was apparently reached heesh re at justice last week. Trump said in the call that he wanted Rudy Giuliani, his lawyer, and attorney general william barr to talk to president zelensky of ukraine. But the Justice Department says that barr only found out about the call several weeks after it was made when the matter was referred here to the Justice Department for investigation and that barr has not spoken to the president about this, about ukraine, or investigating anything relating to former Vice President biden or his son. The Justice Department says that the president has not asked barr to contact ukraine on this or any other matter. And it says that barr has not communicated with ukraine about this or any other subject or and they also say he has not talked about this with Rudy Giuliani. Now, one other note here, van in a savannah, the Justice Department says it does not know to this day the identity of the whistleblower. But they say that in the letter. From the Inspector General to the director of National Intelligence about this forwarded to the Justice Department, the ig himself says there is, quote, some indicia of arguable political bias on the part of the person who made this complaint. Well, a lot to unpack there. And i dont want to go over the heads of my head or anybody who is listening. So pete, what you have just given us, lets turn to Peter Alexander. And peter, lets try to set this up a little bit farther now. Now we have the context perhaps, the noteshe call that took place from president zelensky and President Trump back in july. And the allegation from democrats is and based on public reporting in particular in the washington post, that military aid was withheld by the u. S. To e ukraine and a week later this phone call takes play and the allegation is that it is inappropriate for the president to have essentially asked ukraines president to look into a matter that would be potentially damaging to potential rival former Vice President joe biden having to do withis son. So that is the big picture. What did you just hear from those notes that now caused democrats to launch an impeachment inquiry. Reporter obviously there will be a lot of people within the white house, his outside attorney, Rudy Giuliani, who will be focused on every of the words there. I was struck by that word favor here which may indicate that the president has no expectation of anything in return. The president himself repeatedly in recent days has said that there was never any quid pro quo, there was no quid pro quo. And his explanation has shifted here. Initially he said the reason for withholding that money was in order to make sure that there was an investigation of some kind into you ukranian bureaucratic corruption. And then yesterday he said that it was because he wanted to make sure that European Countries were doing their fair share, giving enough money to ukraine as well. The eu for its part says it has done plenty giving more than 15 billi billion since 2014. But we have certainly heard from the president irritation and from frustration, lashing out on twitter at House Democrats saying that they are overstoar r overstepping their bounds, president s allies and friends tell me that they believe it will work in his favor, that it will secure his reelection. The president said as much yesterday. This is certainly a political gamble for nancy pelosi but for the president also a significant irritant. Two days ago basically saying he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize and now just one of four american president s facing the prospect of impeachment. And we just received actually what Pete Williams has been looking at which is this now unclassified by the president note which it looks like a transcript but not technically a transcript, it is a note of the call. And i have Andrea Mitchel with me and you are looking at it as well. I mentioned the big picture issue of whether or not the u. S. Had withheld military aid and then a week later had this conversation which a favor was asked by the president according to these notes. Should mention that there was no mention of military aid on this call. Where do we stand with this . And the role of Rudy Giuliani in particular, the president s personal lawyer. That is going to be central to this whole issue because you would not expect the president to say i am withholding military aid and i wasnt want you to come this. That would never than. But when he says i want you to do me a favor and raise the issue of a prosecutor, in fact that prosecutor was used by the european union, the United States, all of the professionals in the International Arena as not doing enough on corruption. That prosecutor was the problem. It wasnt that he was aggressively looking into the bidens. It was that he was not doing enough to root out ukranian corruption. So biden was following the policy, joe biden then Vice President , was following u. S. Policy in going after that prosecutor. The president is really crossing a line in raising biden at all with the new president , that they had not spraft aeparate and apart fr whether there was any quid pro quo. There are a lot of problems here. That as well as that initial paragraph seems to be asking him do me a favor, find a Hillary Clinton email connection to the origin chs of the mueller probl. Manafort was representing the prorussian government that was not explicit, but the context certainly suggests that. People have analogized this kind of conversation to when, you know, a godfather would say, you know, i want you to do something, everyone knows what is involved here. The president of ukraine, a small country, congressionally mandated weapons, 400 million are withheld just days before this call. And then the call takes place. And then only afterwards in recent days when this becomes explosive is the money released. The president says the reason i withheld that money is because im looking for europe to pay its fair share and has nothing to do with this. European institutions spent twice as much, 400 plus million more than the 200 million provided by the u. S. So let me turn back to Pete Williams who looked at it longer. On this very narrow issue, because andrea is talking about some of the ethical improprie improprieties with the context and the content of this call. You mentioned that the department of justice was asked and referred a case that was very narrow to look at whether there was a crime here, whether the crime of a Campaign Finance violation was met, so whether or not the elements of a particular statute was met, but it is important to point out, they do not in this document see a Campaign Finance violation or presumably any other crime which candidate than the matter of impeachment. Absolutely right. For two reasons. Number w number one, impeachment is largely a political exercise, not a legal one. So while the constitution speaks of high crimes and misdemeanor, that has never he bebeen define any court. It is up to congress. So it is a political punishment, not a legal one. And secondly nancy pelosi said yesterday that the failure of the intelligence committees Inspector General to be able to communicate this letter from the whistleblower to congress, that the Justice Departments opposition to that was a violation of the law. This is the Justice Departments answer to that, they are saying no, it didnt violate the law because what the law says is we pass along whistleblower complaints under this specific statute when they relate to an Intel Community person or activity and this was neither, this was a diplomatic call by the president and by the way they said administrations of both parties throughout the years and they cite some language from the Clinton Administration and janet reno have asserted that diplomatic calls are entitled to executive privilege. So for various reasons they say that it wasnt illegal to not pass this letter along, but what the point they made this morning is it didnt end there, that it went to the Justice Department and they looked at whether it was a criminal violation for the president to say this to zelensky and concluded that it was not. And i should mention nancy pelosi just said that, unclear to me whether this is after having heard about this transcript, but she said just now the fact is that the president is in breach of his constitutional responsibilities, has asked a Foreign Government to help him in his Political Campaign at the expense of our National Security as well as our undermining the integrity of our elections. In a cannot stand. He will be held accountable, no one is above the law. Let me go to jeremy bash, you were chief of staff in the obama administration. Im assuming you are up to speed as much as the rest of us are. What do you take from this . What is jumping off the tanlg page to me at the bottom of page two, the president of ukraine says i would like your great support in the area of defense. And the very next sentence by the president is i would like you to do us a favor. It is not like different parts of the transcript. It is literally the president of ukraine says help us with defense and the president says i would like you to do us a favor. I dont think that it is anymore clear than that that this conversation was about a trade, defense support for support politically for the president. That is very interesting because we were talking about whether there was this week or so passage of time between the withholding of aitd d by the u. For whatever reason and then this call where he raises this favor. But as you now acknowledge, it is president zelensky who has defense funding and purchasing of weapons on his mind, brings it un. I should mention you said it is directly after in this document and it most certainly is, but this is not a transcript, so we dont know if this was right after they said this or there was small talk in between. We dont know. And by the way, were waiting for the the president who were told will be making some kind of remark on camera. I want to turn back to andrea because it says in this call that the president was going to ask is tthe attorney general an Rudy Giuliani to look into this. According to the Justice Department, the attorney general took no action on this whatsoever. What about Rudy Giuliani . He has been out on camera talking about what he did or didnt do. And sometimes in the same sentence saying i did this because of biden and then the next sentence i was doing it for the state department. This just last night on fox news and then again speaking today. He has been all over the lot. And the controversy really is in the spring to the supporter, Rudy Giuliani was meeting with ukranian officials all over europe. And in ukraine. And trying to drum up, first of all, whole issue of Hillary Clinton behind the Mueller Report which has never been there has never been a connection there, it was always manafort representing ukranian interests involved with the Mueller Report. But most importantly about joe biden, Rudy Giuliani said that he was working on behalf of the state department. To look into hunter biden and joe bidens involvement in this. And he keeps raising these issues. And now the president is raising it with president zelensky. We have a series of what now seem to not be coincidental developments. The u. S. Ambassador to ukraine forced out or resigning or fired under pressure, very officially duri suspiciously. Why was she forced out, why are other key figures, the person representing ukraine and russian interests, Vladimir Putins intere very experienced from many administrations, fionna hill, leaving the National Security council at the same time. It was a ceremony that was especially poignant for some of the citys newest firefighters Nbcs Joe Fryer is here with that story. This is a great story, guys, so about 500 firefighters graduated from the fdny academy, among that group, 21 were known as legacies, that means their fathers died in the line of duty most of them either lost their dads on 9 11 or in the years that followed because of 9 11 related illnesses. Now their family legacies are living on through a new generation. At a ceremony filled with hundreds of firefighters adorned in their dress blues and white gloves, the fdny truly passed d the torch. Definitely our fathers are watching over us today. Of the 21 legacy firefighters graduating from the academy, 13 lost their fathers on 911. I miss my dad all the time, but i know he would be happy for me i know he would be proud. Reporter brendan reagen was 12 when his father robert ft killed answering the call. It wasnt until five years ago that brendan realized he wanted to follow in his dads foot steps. Throughout the process its brought me closer to my dad and as that happened, it only made me want to do the job more and more this whole process has been great for me in terms of reconnecting a little bit with my dad, and i feel great about it. Reporter two of the graduates are siblings, rebecca and mark asaro who always thought their dad karl had the coolest job in the world. Its a big accomplishment, its very challenging, but we stuck together. Gone are the days when our mothers seem to have all the answers. The rules of engagement are changing for women everywhere, especially for those over 50 with no road map to navigate our futures, we turn very often to friends. Thats why i recent sat down to have this modern conversation with a group of women over 50 getting candid about how they feel, what they want, and where we are all headed. When you hear people say youre a woman of a certain age or youe aging, what has been the Biggest Surprise to you about that. They dont say men of a certain age. I want to point that out. They dont. And i would say, it pisses me off, theres a negative connotation with aging i see it in our business, the way people speak to me. I was looking forward to it. You had some experience, and you can let go of some of the silly small stuff, and youll be taken more seriously. You think well, thats what i was hoping how is that working out do you feel youre taken more seriously or do you feel like youre dismissed both. Its also just being a woman is difficult if you look at country radio for every 44 songs on country radio, only one is sung by a woman, and i think thats a really depressing statistic i didnt know that. Wow i kind of feel sorry for, you know, people in their teens and 20s who seem to be really grossed out by the idea of getting old, and old is like 30, i think, you know, because i feel like ive never been more creative and more confident and happier. I never really counted on being offered anything you know, everything ive done ive just sort of created the opportunity for myself thats what i feel like i have now i have more authority to use my voice to create the things that i want to do because of certain things i know now. What is the biggest misconception about women in their 50s and 60s. They think we dont know anything. Right and thats something that fascinates me because i feel like how do you view sex differently today than when you were 40, for example well, i mean, you may not be just absolutely ruled by it 24 hours a day, but there are times and maybe fairly frequently where, you know, you want to get busy it still happens but then again, you know, when youre in the airport and you accidentally catch the eye of a 35yearold man and he looks away like you just like flashed your huha at him, thats a little disturbing. Hey, i just happened to accidentally look at you dont get sweaty how about when the young men look at you because they find you sexy. You think younger men want women your age i think a lot of them do. I mean, i think theyre attracted, maybe its like a little fantasy and its fleeting or whatever, but im a grandma, and i love being a grandma more than anything but i dont want to look like a grandma. And you dress hot, put it out there. I think the term age appropriate needs to go away it really is meaningless. What else do you think has to go away, women of a certain age go away. Are you supposed to be dancing when youre 60 youre not supposed to be. Are you supposed to have long hair, youre not supposed to are you supposed to wear vintage clothes, no, and all these things, we have been taught are unseemly for someone of a certain age. Im doing a lot on Womens Health do you go to your doctor and talk about your brain health, your hormones. I do. But im not sure they know they dont. Yes because so Little Research is done using women most research, as you know, is funded for men. And people talk about menopause but not the way they talk about like if a man had menopause, we would know everything about it. Though, you know and i mean, things like just look at the word, though, menopause, just stop it right there. Were done talking about that. I know this is morbid but a lot of my friends say how many summers do we have left. Its like a weird countdown but its also a way to really enjoyt every single second of life. But what is it we can tell our younger selves or women in their 20s about what it feels like to age, you know. I talked to my daughters all the time about aging and i say, you know, its a lot of stuff youre going to have to deal with but i feel like im so much smarter and so much more confident. I always say to my girls that my mother was, i mean, i never saw anybody with more wrinkles, actually, and every room she walked into, she was the most interesting woman in the room. What does it feel like when you look in the mirror in the it morning when you get up . I still feel real cute. Everybody here is saying this is your moment, where are you going, where do you feel youre leading yourself, your family, e to be your friends to. I would just like to continue to be myself, and follow my bliss, and not let anybody tell me i can or cant do certain things. I like celebrating what is. I get concerned about young women not knowing what women have gone through throughout history and theres still more to do for sure, but its really important to know how much better it is now. And what about you . Showing that you can its never too late to do the thing that youve always wanted to do. And what about you, tina. I know im better, you know, at 65 than i was at 45 we dont have expiration dates i love this conversation. This could have gone on for like five parts or so. And im hoping to have this conversation with women all across the country, different ethnic groups because what women are doing is theyre saying im not going to be dismissed, told im irrelevant im not going to be invisible, im going to start a business, make you see me because im actually having a great time and have a lot to say. And going to fall in love you talked about how tina knowles she said it was not an option not to fall in love again, not to get married again, not to live my best life. She went out, fell in love, got married, and living for the first time fully herself, and shes such an inspiration to me. I think listening to that conversation makes it exciting and inspiring to get older i mean, i cant wait to see whats to come. That could be a show, by the way. That should be opposite the view thats a great idea will you talk to somebody about that for me. We know people. Hes an emmy winning producer. I just cleared 90 of the country. Totally when ryan murphy pitched the piece, obviously i was in because its ryan murphy and hes brilliant, and i loved glee and horror story, and somebody that took up space in a room, and after playing evan hanson, and book of mormon, to play someone who wants to be seen and is confident, and again, really somewhat egomaniacal is really fun. I want to talk about the show in a second but im just sitting here, i was reading that intro about you, and looking down at my notes and it says you turned 26 yesterday. I did turn 26 yesterday. How did you celebrate 26. I did promoting of the show, had best friends over, ate sushi danced around. Do you ever sit with whats happened in your life, youre ben platt, you have all these things, do you ever just revel in it for a minute. I try to. My mom julie, thats her mo always is to like get me i live very much in my head and often get ahead of myself or think about whats coming next or what could have gone differently. Shes the one to call me and say lets take in what happened, lets be in the moment. One of the things you do well in your life, it seems with your project is you pick well you seem to pick projects that are a perfect fit for you, and this one, the politician, is i mean, i was watching parts of it, and i leaned into this i thought this was perfect i know ryan murphy was the reason what else was it about this project that made you say yes. A couple of things, i think the liberal, social, utopian world he portrays is something im proud to be part of, a world where the queerness of the characters and gender of the characters is part of the tapestry, and an assumed reality, and doesnt need to be a focus of plot. I thought that was a forward thinking, beautiful thing and ie just discusses this thing were grappling with how authentic can we be and put our most authentic foot forward when we want to curate our imagine and achieve what were trying to achieve, and everybody with social media right now regardless of age and walk of life is dealing with, you know, how can i be fully organic without compromising organic without what im trying to accomplish. Do you hate social media. Love hate, like we all do i think its wonderful for showing your love for people and promoting things youre proud of and its also like very dangerous and a lot of sort of pitfalls of seeking validation there and a lot of ugly people on there.
