The state is now taking over two hospitals, all in an effort to hold off what his office is estimating could be widespread Coronavirus Infection in the state. Nearly 40 Million People, the whole population of california, are under new orders tonight. We direct a statewide order for people to stay at home. That directive goes into force and effect this evening. Reporter governor gavin newsom shared a stark statistic. If no action is taken, Coronavirus Infections will likely skyrocket across the state. The virus will impact about 56 of us. You do the math. In the state of california, thats a particularly large number. Reporter Governor Newsoms estimated 56 infection rate is about 25. 5 Million People over an eightweek period. We are facing shortage of our staff. We are facing shortage of the masks and the ppes at this time, and thats why this seems a little scary to all of us. Reporter this doctor is the chief medical officer of a Health Center in fremont. She says Governor Newsoms order will help prevent california hospitals from getting overwhelmed. If people stay at home, infections will be prevented. The crisis can be more manageable, and every hospital bed will be needed. That includes more than 350 at one struggling bay area Medical Center. Today we just secured a very large hospital in northern california, seton. Its now part of our portfolio. Reporter and the governor says theyre also looking to announce a Second Hospital in Southern California tomorrow. Governor newsom also calling on californias private sector and entrepreneurs to help in this effort, calling on them to start manufacturing ventilators if possible. Until now, Los Angeles County has only had a ban on large gatherings. Shoppers at a costco in burbank were stocking up and not surprised to learn their restrictions were tightening. I was sort of expecting it after seeing what was happening in San Francisco. I think its good. Its good. We should do that. We should take care of ourselves. Ive been expecting it, waiting for it, and i think its the right thing to do. Im a nurse. I think thats what we have to do. Okay. So about an hour from now, Governor Newsom is telling all californians to stay at home. Los angeles city officials had issued a safer at Home Health Order basically meaning the same thing. Weve been sheltering at home for a few days now, but beginning at midnight, napa county will also follow suit. Some of them saying closed until further notice. A lot of businesses i noticed closed early. It seems as though people here in napa are ready to hunker down. I think it all happened in the beginning of the week. Im off on tuesdays, and the Grocery Stores were just crazy. Reporter we could tell because the shelves that are usually filled with canned goods, disinfectant wipes, and toilet paper are empty. On wednesday, napa and solano counties were the last of the nine bay area counties to tell residents to shelter in place because of the coronavirus spread. Now that the entire state is joining in, people are taking it all in. If you would have told me last thursday id go to bed and this would be like this this week, i would have never believed you. It seems like a dream. Reporter we saw parents taking their children for a lastminute haircut. A usually bustling 183room hotel is closed until further notice. And we also watched restaurants that provide grabandgo food like the dutch door making drastic changes to protect its customers from covid19. Weve also just kind of done things like have signs that people are not being close to each other. Weve also done kind of zero contact takeout. So no cash, no kind of exchanging of credit cards and stuff like that. Reporter well, some Business Owners i talked to are really unclear about what this order means. Some of them are wondering if they can take personal appointments. Im sure these are things that will be worked out in days and weeks to come. These are the latest numbers from the cdc about the age of patients in california. 448 cases are people ages 18 to 64. 13 cases are children. More than 200 cases are people 65 and older. Meanwhile, here in the bay area, 14 new cases in santa clara now totaling 189. Sab san mateo up to 89. Today a confirmed case at a los altos senior facility. The Rehabilitation Center says it took precautions when the outbreak started, especially after the 35 deaths at a nursing home in washington state. But a 75yearold man at the center in los altos has tested positive. It comes after five peoples at the atria facility in burlingame tested positive. The first confirmed case announced in the San Jose Police department. A reserve Police Officer tested positive. The police chief says he ordered 20 other reserves who were in contact with that officer to stay home. And the chief shared with us his own frustration with what he calls the nations testing priorities. You know, my rank and file sees every day, you know, professional athletes and movie stars getting tests, some of which are asymptomatic. So its very difficult to sell that to the rank and file. We should also note the San Jose Fire Department now has 11 firefighters who tested positive. 76 more may have been exposed. They are being monitored. The governor painted a grim picture of what the future holds in we dont get a grip on this virus by staying home. But are people taking it seriously . Today she told people this is not a vacation, urging people to isolate, to avoid that worstcase scenario. We found a lot of people out and about, and they had company. First edd says you should file right away, the same day youre let go in possible. Heres how. Online or by phone. The edd says you cannot just show up at their offices to apply in person. You must file online or by phone. Step two, a state worker is going to interview you to make sure youre following the rules. They might also require you to register with cal jobs. Thats a state run job search website. If youre approved, edd says youll receive between 40 and 450 per week for up to a year. The amount depends on how much you earned at your previous job. It could take a few weeks to kick in by the way. Edd says its dealing with a surge in applications right now. An Infectious Disease expert and a chief medical officer at a Medical Center in fremont. Both of them say reports are that medical doctors and nurses simply do not have a lot of the equipment that they need, the ppes, the personal protective equipment and other equipment that is still trying to be mobilized as part of this effort. No toilet paper, no canned goods, and Business Owners i talked to tonight say theyre ready to do their part. As a community member, its inconvenient. Were trying to support our other Business People in the area, particularly the restaurants that can still provide some takeout food. But, yes, its definitely inconvenient.
