Th iugh social media, its clear everyone in the tv world has a Regis Philbin story to tell. Every Single Person but nobody has more stories or memories than kathie lee who sat next to him for 15 years on live with regis and kathie lee. Well talk to her in a moment, but first what made him such a national treasure. Any day that has Regis Philbin in it is a good day. Reporter america lost a Television Legend this weekend and we at today, we lost a friend three people went reporter regis started at the bottom just a kid from the bronx working hard behind the scenes on the tonight show. He had a few stints on air in local tv reg and became a regular on the joey bishop show. But it wasnt until a little and kathie lee that regis became a star and the man people wanted to wake up with they shared the screen for 15 years. As kathie describes it, they laughed and bickered were role models for dysfunctional people reporter everyone watching at home laughed along with them. Even after his work wife kathie lee left the show, their friendship continues i was with regis and joy last night. Regis had me in stitches reporter on today, she referenced her old pal as often as her own kids. What do you miss most about seeing kathie lee every day . Every day i dont know if i could take it every day. Reporter in 2014, the duo was together again with regis filling in on the fourth hour of today still finishing each others sentences. She had two dogs. One was chardonnay and i had three one was regis reporter kathie lee opened up about the passing of her long time friend and partner in this tribute saying i simply adored him and every day with him was a gift there has never been anyone like him and there never will be. On today, we will never forget halloween 2016 when kathie lee nailed her regis impression. I got to tell ya. It didnt do it for me reporter who better to poke fun than the one who knew him best forget about the props. I was a prop guy once. You got to be on broadway, pal and he supported his longtime friend once again playing a role in kathie lees original today show musical theres no buts about it you got to go for the gold reporter this scene had about 50 takes regis at 82 crouching on the floor and never complained you can have fun with that, reassuring rookie producers with a gentle, listen, kid this will go great he spent three decades reigning over tv. And i love when we spoke over the weekend, you said i just saw him a couple of weeks ago. So tell us about that. How was he yeah. I was up from tennessee where i live most of the time. And of course the first call i always make is to regis and joy. They still are here in the summertime i was like can we have some lunch. They came over about two weeks ago. I saw reg get out of the car with joy and i sensed some much more fragility than id seen in him since the last time in january in los angeles so i had made them their favorite i hadnt, but this wonderful friend of mine did their favorite thing is just this big bowl of just deliciousness. And we sat right here on my screen porch and we laughed ourselves sick we always picked up right where we left off. I was with him 15 years. But its been 20 years since i left the show. And we became dear friends through the years since then just always getting together every chance we could and just picking up as i said right where we left off. So we just had the best time and after they left, i just thought to myself, lord, is that the last time im going to see my friend. Because he was failing i could tell yeah but i then called, of course i dont know something told me the other day when i was in tennessee, get on a plane and go home. I didnt know why, but i learned to listen to that voice. I got on the plane, came home, and immediately heard the news about regis. Called joy immediately and talked with her. Yesterday drove over to her house with a big vat of, you know, fruity dimatti and every gift wine i had to give to her and the girls. They were in their living room going through pictures there were thousands of pictures we just reminisced for a little while. I dont want to intrude on their private family time, because i remember what that was like. Its been five years almost since frank passedies reaching out, but you also desperately i family so anyway, i was just grateful to have the time with them and comfort them a little bit, let them know that i believe with all my heart that i know where regis is and i know who hes with because i had many, many conversations with him over the years about faith and about where we go when this life is over he was very curious as always, listened we always respected each others opinions so highly you know, in all the years we were together, we never had one cross word not one. Hoda, you and i dont think we did either11. We were only 11. But i got to say but our friendship lives on the same way. We were only 11. We were only 11 but i got to say but our friendship lives on the same way it does and regis was your first i remember when regis was on the show and he said this. And i love this. He said kathie lee i want you to my tv life was the 15 years i know the best part of my life, my tv life was the 15 years i spent with you i mean, and you had with regis magic. Like i have never seen anything like what you two had. Why do you think that was the case what was it . What was it . You know, i think we both came from a place of wed been performers all our lives so when we got together, it wasnt you and i had a different challenge because you had come from the world of journalism took us a little bit more. Took time for you to start trusting your instincts as a performer. Better actress than regis was an actor. But he was an entertainer and so was i. When we came together although we didnt have a friendship yet, we had a Mutual Respect for what we accomplished already in our careers. And we had the same sense of humor. And i wasnt afraid of me and he sure as heck wasnt afraid of me and we took off like a rocket. We loved being a local piece of slime show thats what we called ourselves. We were happy doing that little show and we always said well never go syndicated until somebody puts us on a satellite and says dont change anything. Just be who you are because itid
