New at 11 00, a full apology for a bay area assemblywoman who had to make a tough decision involving her newborn. In this state and ellie agrees that we absolutely need to pass this bill. Thats east bay Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks and her 1monthold infant ellie. Ellie making state history as the youngest person to speak or, in her little case, cry during session. The mother of two was forced to bring her newborn to sacramento because Assembly Leadership denied her request to vote by proxy. According to its office, giving birth wasnt considered a valid then the bill came up, and i was in the middle of breastfeeding, and i thought, i have to get to the floor. So i detached my daughter from me and, you know, put a blanket over her to try to protect her. Assembly speaker Anthony Rendon is in charge of deciding who gets to vote remotely during the pandemic. Rules say members who get permission must be at higher risk of catching covid19. Rendon released an apology tonight that read in part, my intention was never to be inconsiderate toward her, her role as a legislator, or her role as a mother. I failed to make sure our process took into account the unique needs of our members. I commit to doing better. So far no word tonight from wicks on that apology. Recordbreaking health hazard. Tonight the bay areas streak of unhealthy air continues with the 15 account consecutive spare the air alert. And another record is expected to tomorrow. While some people become immune to these sort of warnings, medical experts say its something that we should all be taking seriously. Nbc bay areas Terry Mcsweeney reports from a very smoky novat. You can even see like a haze inside the house and inside our offices. Reporter you can smell it. The moment i got out of my car, i literally was gasping for air. Reporter you can feel it . Reporter most of this smoke is coming from the woodward fire in the Point Reyes National seashore. Its burned 4,500 acres. Its now 41 contained. The plumes of smoke have been rising and moving aefts for almost two weeks now, but its what you cant see thats most dangerous. This pollution thats microscopic, these particles, they penetrate deep into the lungs, and thats really what is very dangerous, how deep these particles can penetrate. Reporter our experts say Healthy People should recover in short order from breathing this unhealthy air unless they have an undiagnosed, underlying condition. That could lead to some longterm issues. For those diagnosed with respiratory issues like asthma, doctors say keep your rescue inhaler nearby and alert your physician that youre having more difficulty than usual. Dont get into a deep, dark hole and then all of a sudden you cant get out of it because youve had that much of a compromise. Reporter there is one question experts cant answer, a question everybodys asking. When is it going to pass . Reporter in novato, Terry Mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. When is it going to let up like she asked . Chief meteorologist jeff ranieri has been tracking all that smoke for you. Jeff, tomorrow day 16 of the spare the air alert. We talked about it earlier. People have headaches. Ive had a headache for four days and a scratchy throat. You can feel it. Yeah, you really can, and its just kind of debilitating. Its hard to even go outside. Youve got all this stuff to do, and it really gets in the way. We know that seems a little superficial compared to, of course, the evacuations, the lives lost, and the structures destroyed. But, again, lets get you the latest on the smoke. You can see today we had all of that smoke across the bay area. We also had the fog mixing in. So just really gray sky out there. But as we fade this next map on, what youre going to see is the wind for tomorrow. I want to highlight this because the wind direction is going too start to change. Its the same Extremist Group named in the killing of a Santa Cruz County deputy and federal officer in oakland in june. Detectives say viarengo also sent a harassing letter to one of the widows. Its quite disgusting and to be honest with you, the verbiage that he used was something to the effect of he wished more Law Enforcement officers had died.
