Reports of systemic racism in the Health Care System and covid19 made the issue even more urgent. Doctors are bringing this concern to light saying black and brown patients are treated differently. Joining me is dr. Amanda little richardson. An ob gyn. I know its been busy for you. How has it been treating pregnant women during pandemic . Theres been a will the of babies born during covid. There has ban lot of babies born. Nothing has changed in the sense there are still pregnant women that need care and we have been able to continue to provide excellent quality care. Luckily i work with the organization that continues to have taken extra precautions for our safety and submissions and safety of our patients. I think that are you aware pregnant women are just coming to the table with a little more anxiety, concerns because the guidelines and recommendations continue to change. Hopefully it will put their minds at ease a bit. We want to talk about racism and health dare. You report that black women are four times more likely to die from pregnancy related complications than white people. Why is that . Social security a multifactorial issue. California has been the only state to see a reduction in maternal mortality. Thats through the california maternal Care Collaborative which in 2006 since its initiation has been initiating Maternal Health care bundles. Its giving a systemic approach to how we care for our patients regardless of race. Even though california has seen such a drastic improvement, that disparity by race still exists. Unfrp unfortunate unfortunately, we come to the recognition in the United States we have a problem with racism and that racism is an ugly aspect of American Life and that stems as well to held care. The true issue in provering those health care disparities, these poor Maternal Health outcomes for black and africanamerican patients is by recognizing the systemic race. The bias that clinicians bring to the care of minority patients and improving that. Is it just basically racism or is it also like a socieconomic problem too based on different communities of lower income and thats why they are treated differently . Thats an kplenlexcellent qu. When we hold for things like education levels, socioeconomic status, we still see the disparity within africanamerican patients and women diagnose of higher rates and having more complications. Its not based on access to health care alone. It is a level of systemic racism. That our people we dont recognize or biases and when patient of color come plplains t a pain, we do interpret that differently. We find our patients are getting less pain medication because of a stereotype that black patients are pain seeking. Im really happy to work at an organization like kaiser which has been very forward thinking and committed to reducing the Health Care Disparity th. They spent 60 million in social justice and racial out come of research and effort. We are out of time but i want to mention, you wrote an article calling for hr to be done to bring more black and brown people into medicine. Do you think that will help the problem in. I think it will. The more diversity of thoughts, backgrounds, every one views a problem differently. They will bring unique solutions and all of that is only going to improve the Health Care Quality that we provide to our patients. Thanks so much for your time tonight. Thank you. We all know school looks very different during a pandemic even when children are allowed back on campus. They are setting up colorful tents and will allow teachers to move classrooms outside even when it rained. They allowed for a waiver to allow inperson teaching for more than its 200 students. Administrators did a lot of research to make it happen. What we know is the virus isnt effective at spreading outside. What we have done is to move most of the classes outside and even inside, to make sure theres large air volume. The School Removed some walls and reconfigured indoor spaces to improve air flow. About a dozen other schools have been granted waiv eed waivers. Up next, changes. How san jose is stopping. They have aprooproval to entertain guests outside.
