Reporter meanwhile people are trying to adapt to a day without power. Most stores here are closed but not all of them. This couple says they managed to buy what they needed. We shopped by flashlight, and we paid cash. We were due two cents change, but we all forgot about that. Reporter people here understand they need to make sacrifices to stay safe. Were surviving. It could be much, much, much worse. Reporter in oakland, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. I want to give you a more detailed look at exactly where those outages are happening. First lets talk about the east bay. Most of the outages are in the oakland hills, which is right here. This is that whole montclair area that she was talking about. Some people without power on the Southeast Side of walnut creek, so were talking about this area right here, and then all along danville, which is right down here. So lets look at the north bay. 9,000 customers without power. Thats just in napa alone. So were talking about this region right in here. 9,000 people there. But if you look at this scope right here, this is where we just went through the glass fire, which was so stressful for the people in that area. And it also includes right here calistoga. That town has its own backup power grid, so theyre able to keep the lights on there. But its because they have their own power. Lets take you to the south bay now. Here we go. We can show you what this looks like. Pg e turned the power to homes and businesses in the santa cruz mountains, so were talking about this whole area here. La honda has no power at all. The power also turned off in a small section of the East San Jose hills. Let me see if we can show that for you right now. Power is expected to be turned on in the evening. We saw pg e crews actually out there in san jose working in this area down here to try to get that power back on. Well, lets bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Jeff, are we going to still have some gusting winds possible tonight . It really looks as we head through the overnight hours well continue to see some gusty winds. A lot of that is going to be 3,000 feet and above so at the highest peaks of our bay area mountains. And it did get gusty over the past 24 hours. I wanted to start off with a look at our maximum wind gusts, and mount st. Helena up to 60 miles per hour. Mount diablo, 55. Rose peak, 42 miles per hour. Sunol hills, 41. Its been a much different scenario as forecasted for the lower elevations. Napa only 10 to 15mileperhour winds. Less down at lower elevations and well continue with some higher mountain gusts. Now, the other problem has been the heat. It has been hot. Look at San Francisco right now. 82 degrees. Oakland at 90. Right over to livermore, we are coming in with 94. Then right up here through napa and santa rosa, 96. Our fire warning expires 11 00 a. M. Tomorrow morning. Well talk more about that hourbyhour wind forecast and ill show you what all of this dry weather has done to the reservoir storage. Ill have more on that in 15 minutes. Thank you, jeff. Police now say theres evidence that somebody actually broke in and took him. Nbc bay areas Anoushah Rasta spoke with both the zoo and police today. She joins us live from the San Francisco zoo. Its first beyond anyone that someone would even take the lemur. Its an endangered animal. Reporter it sure is, and it requires very specialized care, jessica, which is why the zoo is frantically trying to get the lemur back. Now, the reward is 2,100 for information and tips to find the lemur. Thats 100 for every year of its life. The San Francisco zoo is becoming more and more concerned about one of its oldest endangered lemurs that went missing from this habitat. They say he cannot survive much longer without special care. Hes cared for by not just one person or two people but by several people, a team of experts in the care of exotic animals. Reporter the staff at the zoo called the San FranciscoPolice Department yesterday morning when they realized someone may have broken in and maki, their ringtailed lemur, was gone. This is video of the lemur habitat taken shortly after that. Police officers say it looked like a burglary to them, and they think maki was stolen. That was not an entry that appeared to be accidentally left open. Reporter the zoo explains that maki is well over his Life Expectancy and easier to catch because he is the slowest of all the lemurs they have. Its urgent that we get him back. He has again, hes an aging lemur. Hes got a specialized diet. Reporter police are now reviewing Surveillance Video for signs of maki and asking the public for help too. Investigators say theyve already gotten a lot of leads from the public. We are aware that there is a black market for wild animals, and so thats an avenue that we are looking into, and we know that people find these the lemurs really cute. So is it possible that someone stole this animal to keep it as a personal pet . Reporter if you seema maki have any information, call 911 or your local Police Department right away. Anoushah rasta nbc bay area news. Happening right now, President Trump is in miami for a town hall hosted by nbcs Savannah Guthrie. We want to take you live to the event. It actually started at 5 00. It will last an hour but were actually going to show you the entire event tonight at 8 00 right here on nbc bay area. The president s town hall is taking place in the same place where lester holt moderated a town hall with democratic nominee joe biden back on october 5th. President trump is being given the same amount of time in the same time slot that biden had. Now, nbc has received some criticism for that schedule because on the east coast, its airing opposite a separate town hall on abc news with joe biden. Nbc released a statement saying in part, quote, if we were to move our town hall with President Trump to a later time slot, we would be violating our commitment to offer both campaigns access to the same audience and the same forum. We hope voters will watch both discussions. If you missed the town hall with joe biden, its on our website. Go to nbcbayarea. Com and click on biden town hall. Youll also find the town hall with President Trump in the same location once its over tonight. The date is set. On october 22nd, the Senate Judiciary committee will vote on Supreme Court nominee amy coney barrett. Committee chair senator Lindsey Graham made the announcement at this mornings meeting. He also made an unexpected admission to democrats. Yall have a good chance of winning the white house. I dont know where the polls are going to be. Thank you for acknowledging that. Yeah, i think i think its true. That voice you heard was senator Amy Klobuchar who interrupted. Graham then immediately changed the subject to praising the nominee, amy coney barrett. The Committee Vote is set for next thursday. The following day, the full senate will take up the nomination. A new push from mayors up and down california. They want to reopen schools. The call comes from the big city mayors coalition, which includes mayors from san jose, oakland, and San Francisco. They are urging Governor Newsom and state Health Leaders to reopen schools for inperson classes. They say students in low income neighborhoods are suffering the most during distance learning. The mayors are asking the kids from underserved communities, those with parents who are essential workers, and kids who have special needs to be allowed to return to campus first. Now, one thing thats not going to be normal for kids this year, halloween. Trickortreating strongly discouraged. What about thanksgiving and the other holidays . New guidance today from dr. Fauci and other International Medical leaders about family gatherings. Raj mathai joins us now with more. This is a time families all look forward to getting together with everyone, but it seems like many of us will limit that this year. Reporter its going to be that way. Its just disheartening, janelle, if you think about it. No trickortreating. No big thanksgiving gathering. These arent rules, be clear of that. This is just the guidance here. Bottom line, you got to make your own decision. By now, most of us know our Senior Citizens are the most vulnerable in all this. But dont be fooled here. Teenagers and adults are getting hit hard. The latest data from the cdc and npr, there is an increase of cases, covid cases, in 39 states. Look at this map, not california and the west coast, but you can see almost everywhere else in red, thats an increase in cases. I chatted with our nbc National Medical contributor about thanksgiving. Unfortunately the highest risk is what we traditionally do is bringing our big families together, and cdc director actually recently said that these gatherings, household gatherings, small gatherings are actually becoming a source of a lot of new infections. And so this is the year potentially that we keep it small and make up for it hopefully next year. I think a big concern, whether its Health Regarding covid or Just Mental Health about grandparents, grandparents living alone, usually we have thanksgiving with them. Any input or opinion on that . Theres a couple of ways to sort of mitigate this, right . I think one is if youre able to see grand parents at a distance, maintaining that physical distance between yourself and them, thats one way to sort of potentially make it safer for them. And the way that people have done this is by meeting grandparents within backyards if they dont share the same household. Another way to mitigate is to get tested. Tests arent really potentially as accurate in people who dont yet have symptoms. So you might test negative, but that doesnt guarantee that you dont have the disease. But it does add another layer of potentially decreasing the risk of taking that to others. Pretty interesting. You want family thanksgiving, well, testing is a great option. Where do you get tested . Your local kaiser, your local hospital, your local drivethrough testing site. It is free, and you can find a testing site just with a quick google search, testing near me. Janelle. Thanks so much, raj. Still to come, we are learning more about that mysterious explosion at a home in gilroy. Why police say theyve stumbled on a bombmaking lab. Plus i thought it was not that hot. Well, informing the public, particularly in an election year, is one of the most important jobs of being a journalist, something we strive to do well. Yes. Were not the only ones. One San Francisco woman has taken on that responsibility and a whole lot more to help her community this election year. Garvin thomas has her story in tonights bay area proud. Reporter over the years the bay area has been home to some amazing journalists. Portia lee has earned her spot among them. For 33 years, shes worked in the chinese language press. Thats longer than anyone ever in San Francisco. But the most important part is shes not done yet. In fact, in one big way, shes just getting started. If the printed newspaper is a relic of the past, as weve been told many times, it seems someone forgot to tell portia lee, or maybe they did and she chooses to think very differently. Basically the hard copies print newspaper still very valuable. Reporter newspaper reporting has been portias life for more than half her life. She covered the San Francisco crime beat for more than 30 years for a National Chinese language newspaper, until, that is, she got a phone call this spring. Pandemicinduced cutbacks had cost portia her job. I i couldnt believe it. Reporter the very next phone calls were from portias former colleagues, saying her voice in San Franciscos chineseamerican community was too valuable to lose. She should start her own paper. Portia thought, that was a good idea. I thought it was not that hard. I thought it was easy. So i said i could do it. Is it easy . No, of course not. Its so difficult. Reporter thats because portia is not just a reporter anymore. Shes publisher, editor, sales manager, and, yes, delivery woman. All 3,000 copies of this weeks edition are delivered personally by portia. But why go to all this trouble for a venture in which she hopes, at best, to break even . Well, part of it is portia just loves being a journalist. But thats not all. Its more than just for myself learning something new every day, but its that you can make a difference for so many people. Reporter and for some, particularly seniors, portia feels she can only make that difference with a free printed newspaper. No money, no smartphone, no internet needed to be informed about issues directly related to their lives. And that is well worth the paper its printed on. Garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. Journalism a calling for many people like portia, who really dedicate their lives to it. That is incredible. Okay. Jeff, we are in the middle of a red flag warning. When is it going to expire . 11 00 a. M. Tomorrow were definitely going to start to see things beginning to wind down for us. So theres a little good news. Were on the last leg of this very high fire danger. So a look right now and youll see as we head throughout the next couple of hours, i still expect some mountain gusts to range between 30 to 50 miles per hour. Lower elevations not as much, 10 to 20. And once again, fire warning expires 11 00 a. M. Tomorrow. Now, as we move into a closer look at the wind speed, 11 00 tonight keep your eyes on the north bay. That continues to remain the best chance here of some of these gustiest winds. You can see the key to the right and then look at that red to orange color here. Those are those 30 to 40mileperhour gusts that are possible in the north bay mountains 11 00 p. M. Tonight. Well hold on to that as we move through early tomorrow morning. Then by friday afternoon, well start to see those mountain winds beginning to calm. Mount st. Helena, which got up to 60mileperhour wind gusts, i wanted to show you this in particular here. By 9 00 a. M. Tomorrow were down to 26 miles per hour. So on the downward side of things, and that is certainly great to see that trend. As we move through tomorrow morning, mostly clear skies. Plenty of 60s for the south bay right through the peninsula. Trivalley at 67. For the east bay, San Francisco and the north bay it will be a mix of 50s and 60s to start tomorrow. I dont see any big problems as you wake up and try to get out the door, work from home, the kids, some exercising, whatever you got to get in tomorrow morning, looks like a good start. Temperatures by the afternoon dont change a whole lot. Were kind of locked in this pattern, so it will be another warm day. 10 to 15 degrees above average puts us at 93 in san jose. Lots of those 90s remain here for the east bay. But the big thing that sticks out here is oakland and hayward will stay in the 90s tomorrow. So very warm by the bay. Also 91 in redwood city. 90 in san mateo. Daly city up to 81. San francisco also with these 80s staying put here. The mission at 88. Embark dare errrow 85. The trend on my sevenday forecast does start to drop off, especially in San Francisco once we hit sunday, monday, tuesday, and wednesday with that cooler ocean breeze coming back in. For the inland valleys also beginning to drop as we roll into sunday, monday, tuesday, and wednesday as well see those 80s return. Thats better for the fire danger, but it has been so hot the past two months with all of our triple digit days. Fire danger, low humidity starting to have an impact on the state reservoirs here. Right now we are sitting at 85 of average for the four largest reservoirs in the state. So our numbers are starting to slip. Lake shasta at 79 . Not what we want to see there. I can tell you the extreme longrange forecast looking out the next 45 to 60 days, there is some hope maybe into the second week of november to get our pattern to change. Theres a little bright spot in all of this stuff weve been dealing with the past couple of months. Yeah. Looking forward to some relief. Thank you so much, jeff.
