Power generators have been sold out for days. A lucky few have been able to pick them up in neighboring counties. We got an emergency generator and spent the whole morning getting it to run. The winds are picking up in the Berkeley Hills. Firefighters and homeowners are bracing for the worst. Nbc bay areas Marianne Favro joins us live with that story. Marianne. Reporter terry, the city of berkeley encouraged people who live in the hills here to find somewhere else to spend the night tonight because of the extreme fire danger. But many people tell me theyre staying put and going to wait and see what happens overnight. Right now firefighters have beefed up staffing and are focused on the Berkeley Hills near tilden park and grizzly peak where wind could topple fire lines and cause fires. We have evacuated our Operation Center and basically the eeoc helped support all the departments or divisions working this incident. We have also up staffed our fire riggs, fire engines. Reporter special forestry cruiser patrolling the hills to make sure downed trees dont block the only roads in and out of the area. While some have opted to leave the area as a precaution, tonight others like jim sweeney have decided to remain at home. I decided, again, i didnt think the odds were really much that scary. Reporter because of the high fire danger, pg e shutoff power to dozens of homes in the Berkeley Hills. Around 8 00 tonight. And could potentially shutoff power to potentially 800 customers in the area overnight. Firefighters are also working with ham radio operators who are out there in the Berkeley Hills. They are looking for hot spots. They are looking for trees that may have come down and blocking roads or looking for downed power lines as well. Its all hands on deck tonight. The pope fire in napa county is now 100 contained, but crews are staying on the scene for the next couple of days to make sure that these strong winds weve been telling you about dont cause flareups. 61 acres burned. No structures damaged or destroyed. You can add the oakland zoo to the list of places that may be shutdown over the next couple of days because of planned Power Outages. The zoo says it was told by pg e it will likely have to close tomorrow and tuesday. A final determination will be made early tomorrow morning. All right. Theres no fog out around the golden gate bridge. Winds now are heading offshore out to the west at 63 degrees in San Francisco. And obviously even dryer, a bit farther inland. You can see livermore only 10 is the relative humidity and theres that dry north wind at 15 Miles Per Hour. A little bit of an island in the mix of all of this, not seeing a lot of wind. Humidity levels still pretty good. San jose and the scleanta clara valley. Down to the valley, you may not get a lot of wind out of this. It will be the north bay and east bay hills in the Santa Cruz Mountains where well see the gusts. Tonight the red flag warning, thats going to be active for post of the bay area through 11 00 a. M. Except in north bay and east bay hills where that is extended to 5 00 p. M. On tuesday. Gusty winds at times, were seeing more signs of that now mixing down through the central bay. With the recent fires that weve seen, especially around the Santa Cruz Mountains, increased risk of tree damage as those wind speeds start to pick up tonight. For the morning temperatures in the 40s and 50s, should be the gustier half of your day. Less so for the afternoon. Temperatures climbing a little bit more tomorrow. Notice the haze, too, from some smoke from fires to our north, drifting back over the bay area. 73 in San Francisco, 76 in san jose, and upper 70s around the east bay. Central peninsula location, Santa Cruz Mountains to through about 9 00 a. M. And by 5 00 in the afternoon you should see wind speeds rise quite a by the second half of the day. Look at the impact of those offshore breezes right there that dry air surging off the coast. This is brought on by High Pressure to the west. Cold air and low pressure, dry cold front passing by today. Powering up the strong winds were seeing now. That begins to relax by the middle part of the week. And right now as we head towards friday, you can see things will be staying dry, but at least not the gusty winds that were seeing now. Your halloween forecast for now looks dry. We cant have fires now because fires are so hot. Theyre repositioning crews to help local agencies in threatened areas. It was the largest single wildfire in Sonoma County fire, the kincade fire. Our Investigative Unit has obtained the report on the cause and it blames a pg e power line, the line that was supposed to be sha shutdown because it was no longer needed. Nbc bay areas Jaxon Vanderbeken has the story. What youre describing with the kincade fire is not an accident. It is the product of a longstanding pattern. Reporter thats former Public Utilities commissioner after we told her about the kincade fire was blamed on the pg e power line for sparking it. There needs to be a look at the organization and why this organization keeps producing the same types of problems over and over again. Reporter according to the report, the 230,000 volt power line that started the fire had once provided power to a geothermal plant northeast of geyserville. The plant was shutdown more than a decade ago. But rather than deenergize or remove the line, cal fire says pg e left it up. And making things worse, disconnected it from this plant designed to secure the power line to the tower and keep it taut. Over the next two decades, the loose line swung around, twisting in high wind, until it finally snapped on the night of october 23rd, 2019, striking the tower at least a dozen times. In the east bay, San Leandro Police say they opened fire on an armed suspect last night. Officers say the man drove up behind their unmarked car near 137th and ban croft, and then stopped abruptly. Two officers in uniform got out, reportedly saw the man point a firearm in their direction. Both officers shot at the man who was later taken to the hospital in critical condition. The officers were not hurt. Looking at the week ahead, San Francisco poised to make it a crime to make up a racially biased emergency. The socalled karen act stands for caution against racially and exploitatively act. The act makes it unlawful to call police and report a false racially biased emergency call. On tuesday the full San Francisco board of supervisors is expected to pass the act. Law would become effective 30 days after the mayor signed it into law.
