Here in des moines, the icus at several hospitals, including this one, are full. Around the country, Health Care Workers are stretched thin like never before. This morning, hundreds of nurses on strike at a philadelphia hospital, protesting low staffing and rising frustration over the covid crisis. I am very concerned about whats going on in there right now. Reporter now, across the country, Health Care Workers from nearly 100 hospitals are joining forces with an urgent plea. Wear a mask. The new psa shows images of overworked and exhausted doctors and nurses begging for help. Its not just the staffing shortage. Theres not enough of us to help. Reporter but also a lack of bed space. Its exhausting. Its overwhelming. Reporter dr. Nicole guild works in iowa, where the icu is full. There is a sense no one is listening to us. It really does feel, at times, as if, you know, were on the field, were fighting fires, and, yet, people continue to set fires. Reporter doctors and nurses are also becoming patients themselves. More than 900 Staff Members at the mayo clinic in minnesota and wisconsin have been diagnosed with covid in just the last two weeks. At the cleveland clinic, 880 caregivers are out due to covid. If we as Health Care Work force members become exposed to someone with the virus, we would have to quarantine for two weeks, which puts us out of the workforce. Reporter in a virtual roundtable, president elect biden became visibly emotional while hearing from an icu nurse in minnesota, saying shes never been tested for covid, despite working on the front lines since february. You got me emotional. Youre all making extraordinary sacrifices. There is hope on the way. Reporter but this is the sound of gratitude. To be able to put aside all of his own needs, to be able to play for the rest of the Staff Members, it was absolutely incredible. Dr. Torres, were watching doctors and nurses basically on bended knee, pleading with people. If youre not going to do it for yourselves, do it for us. I can feel them wondering, like, is anybody listening . Youre exactly right. Thats what im hearing from my friends, as well. Theyre saying, even to the point where people are getting intubated, as theyre with their last gasping breath, are saying, i dont believe this is coronavirus. I think this is the flu. Why are you doing this to me . Or theyre saying, i should have listened and done these things that we know we need to do. The concerning thing is, this has been going on for nine months or so. We have many, many more months to go with this. Everybody working in the health care industry, doctors, nurse, health techs, they are tired and overworked, overwhelmed. Psychologically, it is taking the toll, as well, and that is important. We have to remember that, as well. The nightmare scenario is before us. Thanksgiving is coming. Again, these doctors and nurses are saying, please, dont go outside your household for thanksgiving. Theres a Washington Post editorial this morning from governors, republicans and democrats. It says, in part, if youre planning to spend thanksgiving with people outside your household, we urge you to reconsider. Think about your last thanksgiving and the people you were surrounded by. As hard as it will be not to see them this thanksgiving, imagine how much harder it would be if their chairs are empty next year. Dr. Torres, for folks who are still on the fence this morning, how dangerous is it to try to gather people together, even extended family, for thanksgiving . Its extremely dangerous. Youre gambling with your familys lives. I get it, we all want to see our family members. This is the time of year we gather with them. I had to tell my sisters and nephews, no, do not come over. It was one of the saddest things i had to do in a long time, but i want to make sure everybody is healthy. For most people, were seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, hearing about the vaccine coming. You need to take the extra measures. Even for most people we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, for Health Care Workers, its deja vu. Were doing what we were doing months ago. More people in the hospitals. Were seeing human behaviors push people into these held care situations where they need this attention. For Health Care Workers, it is adding stress. They have to go home to families, put food on the table because they have to work. Its one of those things that keeps adding to itself, and theres no light at the end of the tunnel for them, unfortunately. Dr. Torres, back to thanksgiving for a second. I think a lot of people think, ill get a test, then ill be fine to sit and enjoy thanksgiving. There was a doctor who we just saw who said, you cannot test your way to a thanksgiving day table. I agree with that exactly. That test only gives you an idea of whats happening that day. You could test good on wednesday, be positive on thursday for thanksgiving. You dont want to use the test as your free pass. All right. Dr. Torres, thank you for that. In the meantime, new restrictions to deal with. Skyrocketing case numbers are going into effect today across the country. Here in new york, the nations Largest School district has switched entirely to Remote Learning starting this morning. For days now, the mayor has warned of a potential school shutdown, with coronavirus cases on the rise. Starting today, all students go back to Remote Learning, disrupting an already fractured school year. Reporter hi, craig good morning so far, the Trump Campaign and republican allies have really racked up the losses with an uphill climb ahead in their legal push, thats partly because election law generally favors counting ballots, not tossing them out, unless there is evidence of fraud or laws being broken in other words, if theres proof. The president and his team, so far, have not provided any a lot of lawsuits, but no big wins for the Trump Campaign so far in a longshot legal battle that extends across six swing States Campaign and republican allies filed at least 30 Court Challenges nbc news tracking all of them, finding 19 of those cases have been denied, dismissed, settled, or withdrawn in at least three cases, its because judges found the president s allies failed to provide facts or evidence to back up their claim. President trump is absolutely right to fight for election integrity. Lets be clear, this is not about politics this is not about campaigning. This is about the law. Reporter the president s campaign has the right to file challenges under the law, like pursuing litigation and asking for recounts, but his attorneys are alleging a nationwide conspiracy that doesnt exist. Rudy giuliani leading the president s team and its push in pennsylvania, arguing to toss out hundreds of thousands of ballots, and ultimately stop the commonwealth from certifying its Election Results he says because of fraud telling a federal judge this week, this is not an isolated case, but one repeated in at least ten other jurisdictions. The judge sharply critical, told giuliani, at bottom, youre asking the court to invalidate 6. 8 million votes, thereby disenfranchising every single voter in pennsylvania. The lawyer opposing giuliani in court telling cnn the judge, who is a very good judge, just asked, you keep talking about fraud, but i dont see this in the complaint. This is outreach that has come from some current and former Trump Administration officials who have privately reached out to the biden transition, according to sources familiar with the matter. Two biden transition folks downplay this. We start in central america, where the devastation caused by hurricane iota is becoming clearer as cleanup continues. From the category 4 storm. At least 26 people are dead across four countries so far. The heaviest toll is in nicaragua, where victims were swept away by swollen rivers or buried in landslides. Rescue workers are trying to reach more remote sites. Iota arrived monday night hitting the same location as hurricane eta. There is a coalition. Apple will pay 113 million to settle a case alleging it deliberately slowed iphones to worsen batteries. Apple should have replaced the batteries or disclosed the issue. The deal follows another settlement requiring apple to pay affected owners up to 500 million to settle a classaction lawsuit brought in california. Yesterday, we were mesmerized by the panda cam at the Smithsonian National zoo. We cant get enough of the giant panda cub. The little guy got his threemonth checkup and is looking relaxed there. Thats when this interview happened. At the time, there were constant stories in the media about Prince Charles and Princess Dianas 14year marriage, falling apart. In this interview, diana told her side. Well, now 25 years later, an investigation into whether she was tricked, and her older son says it is a step in the right direction. This morning, Prince William weighing in on a new investigation into the interview that rocked the royal family. She wont go quietly. Thats the problem. Ill fight to the end. Reporter his mother, Princess Diana, spoke candidly about her failed marriage to Prince Charles with Martin Bashir from bbc 25 years ago. There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded. Reporter now, dianas oldest son, an heir to the british throne, saying a newly launched, independent investigation by one of britains top judges, into whether bashir deceived diana is, quote, a step in the right direction. Adding, it should help establish the truth behind the actions that led to the interview. A new documentary by british broadcaster itv alleges bashir used dishonest tactics to earn dianas trust, including having a Graphic Designer create fake bank statements, which he allegedly used to convince dianas brother royal employees were being paid to spy on the princess. One of the allegations he made was Prince William was carrying a wristwatch, being used to bug dianas conversation. Now, you can imagine that is really quite a horrific thing to say. Reporter Prince Charles and dianas divorce was official months after the interview. One year later, the princess died in a tragic car crash in paris. Old wounds reopened for the royal family with the release of a controversial season four of netflix hit series the crown, a fictional take on dianas marriage to Prince Charles. Where do i fit in . Reporter dianas brother, earl spencer, accused the bbc of wrongdoing saying in a tweet that he knew about the fake documents but what he found out only two weeks ago is that the bbc also knew. The British Broadcasting Corporation says it is taking all of the allegations very seriously, and claims diana sent the bbc a handwritten note, reportedly missing for years but now found, in which she said the documents played no role in her decision to talk. His writings on growing up black in america made him one of the leading voices of a generation his best seller between the world and me written five years ago is all about growing up in inner city baltimore, and his life after that. Its a raw and candid look at the comingofage challenges for black people in this country now, that book had been adapted for a film premiering this weekend on hbo reporter Tanehisi Coates is an extraordinary and powerful voice. Hes been writing about the black experience for more than a decade now hes the groundbreaking author of four books, as well as penning popular black panther comic books. In all, he pulls back the curtain on struggles black people face simply growing up in america. His powerful writings have earned him a National Book award, as well as the socalled genius grant from the Mcarthur Foundation what is it like, to have so much good happening to Tanehisi Coates during these extraordinary times . Its good, but i am in a city that was mere months ago, you know, the epicenter of a pandemic. I would much take no pandemic, george floyd still alive, Breonna Taylor still alive ill always have things to write about. I do recognize i can see that reporter i get the sense that maybe you dont think it was as impactful as i think it takes time to judge that, you know what i mean well see. I hope so. Struggle for your grandmother and grandfather. Reporter hbo adaptation features a truly remarkable cast of performers and activists. When you saw it come to life in the hbo film, what did you think . Ensemble experience its a much more collective experience one of the cool things about it is it means something when i write it a certain way, but when angela davis says it, it has a different level of meaning when Phylicia Rashad says it, theres obviously Something Else that they bring. One of the things thats always stayed with me from the book is this line you wrote. You wrote, you never thought it would be okay. You still believe that five years later . Very much so. And the thing i try to get people to is, so i was born in 1975 born and raised in west baltimore. So when i think about baltimore, i think of baltimore being violent. I think of the violence. I think of walking outside and always, you know, head on a swivel, watch out, you know what i mean even when youre not in the environment. The lives of black people, you know, are just different you know what i mean you feel yourself vulnerable theres this kind of hyperawareness that was really intense within the community in which i was raised, and perhaps is less intense now or was less intense when i went out in the world. But the same basic rules were there. Does that make sense reporter yes to me, it makes complete sense but this hyperawareness youre talking about, with all thats happening in our country this year, do you think that this is finally the year where more people get that, more people get that, understand that . I think more people get that Something Different is happening. Its very hard to watch a man be tortured to death for seven, eight minutes, and say, eh like, thats a hard thing to do. Reporter what role should writers and thinkers like yourself, what role should they play i have always thought of my job as looking out on the complexity, the tangled mess of the world, and trying to define some order or clarity. I always saw my job as to illuminate. I asked him, what do you hope your writings accomplish, books, essay, screenplays he says, any time he writes something, he wants it to haunt you. He wants you to wake up the next morning and think about whatever you read, whether related to race or politics well have more on the third hour, with my conversation with mr.
