An inside look at the president s lawsuit, aimed at casting doubt on joe bidens victory. The Trump Legal Team hit with a string of defeats in court. Well have the very latest. Defending her honor. Prince william breaks his silence, now saying he supports an investigation into his mothers most explosive tellall interview. When you feel they arent listening to you, all sorts of things start to happen. Ahead, the scandal that suddenly erupted over the sitdown 25 years later. All that, plus, who knew . The tiny owl discovered hidden in the branches of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. He was the little gift in the tree this year. Whats next for the adorable stowaway found right outside our window . Today, thursday, november 19th, 2020. Announcer from nbc news, this is today with Savannah Guthrie and hoda kotb, from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Hey, everybody. Welcome to today. Thank you for joining us on this thursday morning. That little guy had quite the road trip from upstate to here, right . A little stowaway came in on our Christmas Tree, was discovered by a worker. Oh, there he is. Hes been named rockefeller or rocky, as hoda likes to call him. Hes already hired an agent, and hes going to have a youtube show. Well tell you about that in a few minutes. Top story, the coronavirus crisis, cases and hospitalizations continue to climb by the day. It is really out of control. It really is. Now, we have yet another grim milestone. Get this, the u. S. Surpassing 250,000 deaths. The situation leading to a desperate and united plea this morning from doctors and nurses at nearly 100 hospitals nationwide. We have complete coverage. Were going to start with Gabe Gutierrez in hardhit iowa. Gabe, good morning. Reporter hoda, good morning. The Positivity Rate here in iowa is a staggering 41 . Here in des moines, the icus at several hospitals, including this one, are full. Around the country, Health Care Workers are stretched thin like never before. This morning, hundreds of nurses on strike at a philadelphia hospital, protesting low staffing and rising frustration over the covid crisis. I am very concerned about whats going on in there right now. Reporter now, across the country, Health Care Workers from nearly 100 hospitals are joining forces with an urgent plea. Wear a mask. The new psa shows images of overworked and exhausted doctors and nurses begging for help. Its not just the staffing shortage. Theres not enough of us to help. Reporter but also a lack of bed space. Its exhausting. Its overwhelming. Reporter dr. Nicole guild works in iowa, where the icu is full. There is a sense no one is listening to us. It really does feel, at times, as if, you know, were on the field, were fighting fires, and, yet, people continue to set fires. Reporter doctors and nurses are also becoming patients themselves. More than 900 Staff Members at the mayo clinic in minnesota and wisconsin have been diagnosed with covid in just the last two weeks. At the cleveland clinic, 880 caregivers are out due to covid. If we as Health Care Work force members become exposed to someone with the virus, we would have to quarantine for two weeks, which puts us out of the workforce. Reporter in a virtual roundtable, president elect biden became visibly emotional while hearing from an icu nurse in minnesota, saying shes never been tested for covid, despite working on the front lines since february. You got me emotional. Youre all making extraordinary sacrifices. There is hope on the way. Reporter but this is the sound of gratitude. This patient in utah intubated and unable to use his voice, instead, played the violin to show his appreciation. To be able to put aside all of his own needs, to be able to play for the rest of the Staff Members, it was absolutely incredible. Reporter cdc estimates more than 200,000 Health Care Workers have contracted covid since the pandemic began. Hoda . Gabe, thank you. We want to bring in nbcs medical correspondent dr. John torres. Dr. Torres, were watching doctors and nurses basically on bended knee, pleading with people. If youre not going to do it for yourselves, do it for us. I can feel them wondering, like, is anybody listening . Youre exactly right. Thats what im hearing from my friends, as well. Theyre saying, even to the point where people are getting intubated, as theyre with their last gasping breath, are saying, i dont believe this is coronavirus. I think this is the flu. Why are you doing this to me . Or theyre saying, i should have listened and done these things that we know we need to do. The concerning thing is, this has been going on for nine months or so. We have many, many more months to go with this. Everybody working in the health care industry, doctors, nurse, health techs, they are tired and overworked, overwhelmed. Psychologically, it is taking the toll, as well, and that is important. We have to remember that, as well. The nightmare scenario is before us. Thanksgiving is coming. Again, these doctors and nurses are saying, please, dont go outside your household for thanksgiving. Theres a Washington Post editorial this morning from governors, republicans and democrats. It says, in part, if youre planning to spend thanksgiving with people outside your household, we urge you to reconsider. Think about your last thanksgiving and the people you were surrounded by. As hard as it will be not to see them this thanksgiving, imagine how much harder it would be if their chairs are empty next year. Dr. Torres, for folks who are still on the fence this morning, how dangerous is it to try to gather people together, even extended family, for thanksgiving . Its extremely dangerous. Youre gambling with your familys lives. I get it, we all want to see our family members. This is the time of year we gather with them. I had to tell my sisters and nephews, no, do not come over. It was one of the saddest things i had to do in a long time, but i want to make sure everybody is healthy. For most people, were seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, hearing about the vaccine coming. You need to take the extra measures. Even for most people we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, for Health Care Workers, its deja vu. Were doing what we were doing months ago. More people in the hospitals. Were seeing human behaviors push people into these held care situations where they need this attention. For Health Care Workers, it is adding stress. They have to go home to families, put food on the table because they have to work. Its one of those things that keeps adding to itself, and theres no light at the end of the tunnel for them, unfortunately. Dr. Torres, back to thanksgiving for a second. I think a lot of people think, ill get a test, then ill be fine to sit and enjoy thanksgiving. There was a doctor who we just saw who said, you cannot test your way to a thanksgiving day table. I agree with that exactly. That test only gives you an idea of whats happening that day. You could test good on wednesday, be positive on thursday for thanksgiving. You dont want to use the test as your free pass. All right. Dr. Torres, thank you for that. In the meantime, new restrictions to deal with. Skyrocketing case numbers are going into effect today across the country. Here in new york, the nations Largest School district has switched entirely to Remote Learning starting this morning. Nbcs kathy park has that part of the story. Kathy, good morning. Reporter savannah, good morning to you. For days now, the mayor has warned of a potential school shutdown, with coronavirus cases on the rise. Starting today, all students go back to Remote Learning, disrupting an already fractured school year. This morning, the countrys Largest School system is shutting its doors after the city tops a sevenday Positivity Rate of 3 . No one is happy about this decision, but we set a very clear standard. We need to stick to that standard. Reporter now, new york citys more than 1 Million Students will all return to entirely Remote Learning again, for at least two weeks. For many families, its a troubling setback. If they do this, our kids lose out with education. They need to close bars and restaurants before they close schools. Reporter in kentucky, where infections are soaring, all schools, both public and private statewide, must also move online as the virus spreads. This virus, at its level right now, is and will overwhelm each and every one of our schools if we do not take action. This as the u. S. Hits a grim milestone. More than 250,000 coronavirusrelated deaths. That chilling number expected to climb, as hospitalizations reach an alltime high. As a result, new restrictions are taking effect all across the nation. Starting friday in minnesota, gatherings with people outside your household will be banned. Inperson dining suspended. Gyms and theaters will be closed for four weeks. Its not easy, and its not fair, but its a sacrifice that we need to make. Reporter los angeles is instituting a 10 00 p. M. Curfew for nonessential businesses and capping outdoor capacity at 50 . In wisconsin, which hit a new record high for covid cases, nearly all of its icu beds are full. The governor now extending a mask mandate. Call it what you want. Flattening the curve, stopping the spread, staying safer at int home im going to call it what it is. Its about saving lives. Reporter back here in new york city, the decision to shut down schools is not sitting well with everyone, and thats why parents plan on protesting later today at city hall, arguing the transmission rate within schools is relatively low. Just under 0. 2 compared to the 3 Positivity Rate city wide savannah weve heard a lot of folks say, how can i go out and have a drink at a bar, go to the gym, but my kid cant go to school . A lot of parents frustrated today. Thank you very much. It is 7 11 craig is here with the latest fallout from the election. Hey, good morning this morning, we have new details on President Trumps push for recounts in several key spring states, the defeats hes facing in courts, and the pushback against his strategy of not conceding to president elect joe biden. Nbcs chief White House Correspondent Hallie Jackson has the details on all of it hallie, good morning to you. Reporter hi, craig good morning so far, the Trump Campaign and republican allies have really racked up the losses with an uphill climb ahead in their legal push, thats partly because election law generally favors counting ballots, not tossing them out, unless there is evidence of fraud or laws being broken in other words, if theres proof. The president and his team, so far, have not provided any a lot of lawsuits, but no big wins for the Trump Campaign so far in a longshot legal battle that extends across six swing States Campaign and republican allies filed at least 30 Court Challenges nbc news tracking all of them, finding 19 of those cases have been denied, dismissed, settled, or withdrawn in at least three cases, its because judges found the president s allies failed to provide facts or evidence to back up their claim. President trump is absolutely right to fight for election integrity. Lets be clear, this is not about politics this is not about campaigning. This is about the law. Reporter the president s campaign has the right to file challenges under the law, like pursuing litigation and asking for recounts, but his attorneys are alleging a nationwide conspiracy that doesnt exist. Rudy giuliani leading the president s team and its push in pennsylvania, arguing to toss out hundreds of thousands of ballots, and ultimately stop the commonwealth from certifying its Election Results he says because of fraud telling a federal judge this week, this is not an isolated case, but one repeated in at least ten other jurisdictions. The judge sharply critical, told giuliani, at bottom, youre asking the court to invalidate 6. 8 million votes, thereby disenfranchising every single voter in pennsylvania. The lawyer opposing giuliani in court telling cnn the judge, who is a very good judge, just asked, you keep talking about fraud, but i dont see this in the complaint. Eventually, from giuliani said, you know, youre right, we dont have fraud in the complaint. Were not talking about fraud here. Reporter opponents point out there is no evidence of intentional misconduct, and even pennsylvanias republican senator sounds skeptical. I dont think they have a strong case. Reporter the president still plans to fight for now, probably well into december, even if his allies nudge him to acknowledge and accept his loss in the president ial race. According to multiple sources, one senior official telling nbc news, those close to the president know the legal challenges will continue, but understand theyre futile. I view that the vast majority of republicans are embarrassed by what donald trump is doing. Meanwhile, hallie, with regards to the transition, some headlines being made this morning. Reports of Trump Administration officials actually reaching out to biden amid the transmission roadblock, shall we say. What more can you tell us about that reporter youre right on that, craig. This is outreach that has come from some current and former Trump Administration officials who have privately reached out to the biden transition, according to sources familiar with the matter. Two biden transition folks downplay this. They say it is only a couple people from the trump side who reached out, that it wasnt a big deal, and really emphasizing it does not, in any way, replace the formal National Security and covid briefings the Trump Administration is still not providing. Craig, it does suggest that there are people in President Trumps orbit who understand joe biden will be the next president , even as President Trump himself refuses to acknowledge his loss craig . Chief White House Correspondent Hallie Jackson, thank you. Also this morning, craig, the u. S. Grossi, the monitor of irans Nuclear Ambitions, was in tehran in august and makes a personal plea to the Trump Administration military attack would be detrimental to inspection activity let alone the safety of my inspectors i dont have any evidence that this will happen. Reporter he says the times report, not verified by nbc news, is spectlative the times cited current and former officials the white house has not commented, but pressure is increasing on iran the nuclear site in iran, a mysterious explosion this year now, satellite imagery reveals construction of new facilities near mountains secretary pompeo in israel this morning announcing more sanctions on iran. Their influence in the region is waning, and they are ever more isolated. Those days are over. Reporter President Trump withdrew from the Iran Nuclear Agreement created during the Obama Administration since then, the iranians stockpiling 12 times more uranium. Sort of a retaliation. Reporter grossi says, so far, they see no indication of secret Iranian Nuclear activity. How can we be confident that youre being told the truth . You can be confident that we are constantly pushing and getting all the access we need reporter based on the evidence you are seeing, now is not the time for a military attack on targets in iran . New investigation has been launched into how that interview came to be. How it was secured. The question at hand is did journalist Martin Bashir deceive Princess Diana into doing that interview . This morning, dianas son, Prince William, is weighing in. Kelly cobiella is following all of it for us from london. Good morning. Reporter good morning, craig and savannah. Take you back now to 1995. Thats when this interview happened. At the time, there were constant stories in the media about Prince Charles and Princess Dianas 14year marriage, falling apart. In this interview, diana told her side. Well, now 25 years later, an investigation into whether she was tricked, and her older son says it is a step in the right direction. This morning, Prince William weighing in on a new investigation into the interview that rocked the royal family. She wont go quietly. Thats the problem. Ill fight to the end. Reporter his mother, Princess Diana, spoke candidly about her failed marriage to Prince Charles with Martin Bashir from bbc 25 years ago. There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded. Reporter now, dianas oldest son, an heir to the british throne, saying a newly launched, independent investigation by one of britains top judges, into whether bashir deceived diana is, quote, a step in the right direction. Adding, it should help establish the truth behind the actions that led to the interview. A new documentary by british broadcaster itv alleges bashir used dishonest tactics to earn dianas trust, including having a Graphic Designer create fake bank statements, which he allegedly used to convince dianas brother royal employees were being paid to spy on the princess. One of the allegations he made was Prince William was carrying a wristwatch, being used to bug dianas conversation. Now, you can imagine that is really quite a horrific thing to say. Reporter Prince Charles and dianas divorce was official months after the interview. One year later, the princess died in a tragic car crash in paris. Old wounds reopened for the royal family with the release of a controversial season four of netflix hit series the crown, a fictional take on dianas marriage to Prince Charles. Where do i fit in . You fit in because youre my wife. Reporter dianas brother, earl spencer, accused the bbc of wrongdoing saying in a tweet that he knew about the fake documents but what he found out only two weeks ago is that the bbc also knew. The British Broadcasting Corporation says it is taking all of the allegations very seriously, and claims diana sent the bbc a handwritten note, reportedly missing for years but now found, in which she said the documents played no role in her decision to talk. Kelly, what kind of consequences could this investigation hold . Reporter well, to be clear, this is not a criminal investigation. Were talking about really a risk to the bbc for reputational damage and possibly the end of Martin Bashirs career. He is still working for the bbc. But he hasnt yet commented on this. The bbc says that hes recovering from severe complications from covid and from heart surgery. We should note, also, that the bbc did its own internal investigation back in 1996 and found no wrongdoing. Hoda . Kelly cobiella for us in london. Kelly, thank you. All right. Pfizer says it is now within days of submitting its vaccine to the fda for emergency use authorization. But we move closer to that step, there are growing questions about what comes next. One of the main ones, how will it be safely and efficiently distributed, and who gets it first . Nbcs tom costello joins us with the latest hi, tom. Good morning. Reporter yeah, its a big country. Listen, the next step pfizer, by the way, insists the vaccine is safe and effective, it goes to the fda for emergency approval then a series of steps, and really challenges, to roll it out to the general public. This morning, new photos from pfizer show viles of its vaccine, which it plans to submit to the fda within days. Both pfizer and the moderna report vaccines close to 95 effective in trials. Oxford released preliminary data from phase two of its trials, showing promising results in both young and older adults. But there are new questions about when and how americans will actually get vaccinated leaders from operation warp speed say once authorized, they will distribute the vaccine to all 50 states. We will begin distribution of the vaccine within 24 hours after emergency use authorization is approved. Reporter but the country has never had to deliver a vaccine like this before wide Scale Distribution will take months, and the logistics are complicated. The Pfizer Vaccine requires ultra cold storage, almost negative 94 degrees fahrenheit it can only be at Room Temperature for two hours after thawing. Each person needs two doses, spaced about 21 days apart weve actually developed a really innovative proprietary shipper that is proven and tested to be able to maintain the temperatures needed for our vaccine for up to ten days. Reporter pfizer Vice President tonya alcorn says the Company Plans to have a virtual control tower tracking vaccine distribution, and ensuring each tray of viles gets where it needs to go safely and on time. To make sure we wont waste any precious vaccine. Reporter once a vaccine arrives to a site, itll need to be handled and administered properly which will require training. Vaccines dont save lives, vaccinations do. It is not enough to logistically plan for the vaccine to show up at the hospitals. Reporter another consideration, who will get a vaccine first . Front line Health Care Workers are likely to get some of the earliest doses, though a Cdc Advisory Committee is expected to give clear recommendations about who to prioritize. There is a federal stockpile already of moderna and pfizers vaccines. End of december, we expect to have 40 million doses of these two Vaccines Available for distribution, pending fda authorization. Tom, a lot of good information there. So if youre in a risk group, seems like you should go to the head of the line, and you will, but what about the average american, when could they expect to get a vaccine reporter dr. Fauci is suggesting april, may, june, july is when the general public will get vaccinated. We are encouraged to continue wearing masks, even then, even after youve been vaccinated life returning to normal could be about a year from now, really. You dont see much of the tree put the shot back up, with the scaffolding. What happened after a 200mile trek from upstate new york, and when it came to Rockefeller Center and it came with an owl. What is its name rockefeller. Al roker might have been better. Oh social media saying the tree itself looks a little scraggly well get to that. Joe fryer is outside with the tree, and he has an update with our friend, the owl, update on rocky. How is the little guy doing . Reporter yeah, this story is definitely a hoot. You know, our finefeathered friend is safe and sound, after a saga that sounds like something out of a childrens storybook. A little owls holiday adventure in the big city. When the muchanticipated Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree arrived this year, it wasnt the only thing making a grand entrance inside that tight 75foot bundle of heavy branches was this little, wideeyed resident, who seemingly came along for the ride after the owl was spotted holding onto a branch in the tree, one of the workers promptly got the owl to safely in a Cardboard Box his wife rang up the ravens beard wildlife center. I asked, where does your husband work, and she said, well, hes setting up the ristchtr at eeckefeller center and found this owl. It had been tucked away in this tree reporter those Good Samaritans quickly got the owl to ellen, who was surprised by what she found. I was thrilled that he was alert and looking up at me and not just a little heap in the bottom of the box. Reporter miraculously, xrays found no broken bones, but it had been three days since the little owl had eaten after some fluids and food, he is expected to make a full recovery ellen sharing the wild story on facebook we had people calling and thanking me and so grateful to hear some good news in these times. It just needed to be shared. Im grateful that i did it reporter the owl is believed to be a northern sawwhet, one of the smallest of its kind in north america. Ellen hopes to release the little bird back into the wild this weekend, but not without a new name rockefeller, of course he was the little gift in the tree this year rockefeller just seemed to fit right. Reporter a new beginning for a little fella already on a wild and wonderful journey. Now, youre probably wondering why the owl wasnt found before the tree was wrapped up and made the trip here. We asked the folks at Rockefeller Center that. They told us that every branch is individually inspected before the tree is wrapped up, but sometimes, birds do somehow make their way into the tree at other points during the journey. We should note, even though this is a tiny owl, it is not a baby. This is actually an adult owl. Oh. Back to you guys. That owl picked the right tree, tell you that, joe. So many owl questions while watching that. So cute. I wonder, baby yoda is probably watching now, oh, man, i have competition thats a cute owl. That owl is adorable. Carson, you eluded that others have been commenting on the tree itself. Yesterday, there was a lot of social commentary online about the tree and how its, you know, looking a little scraggly. Perhaps this would be emblematic of the year 2020 somebody tweeted, and i thought it was funny, in true 2020 form, it looks like the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree looked like it tried to cut its own hair theres been comparisons to the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree look, it made a long journey from upstate, and a spokesperson said, give it a second it has to settle in. By december 2nd, during the Tree Lighting, we expect a full recovery how do you look when you first roll out of bed. Plus it had the first moderna shot yesterday. We should adopt the owl today adopts an owl. Well have more right after this what difference could two inches make . I mean, its a truck. Its not about inches. You did it. Yay reporter one great way to do it together while apart is to share a recipe that you both make were keeping it simple. One of our family traditions involves stuffing from a box what is that, bread crumbs . Yup. Now, its like a big mess of stuff. Reporter dont let time zones get in the way we have a threehour time difference, so were having an early dinner, while in california, theyre enjoying lunch. Yahtzee, family charades, uno, pictionary. A green reverse. Green reverse im going to draw. Like the rest of 2020, its not what were used to, but with a little coordination, the best parts of thanksgiving can still be shared wherever you are cheers a shoutout to my brotherinlaw, mike, who was an honorary today show photographer over there in california thank you, mike. So we only connected with our inlaws. If you want to see multiple families, consider shifts. Maybe one family for the toast, one for the appetizers, and another for the dessert or game. That way, not everyone is on the same call at one time. Zoom is actually lifting its 40minute time limit on thanksgiving day your celebration wont be cut short for the free accounts. Thats fun. For those folks who do want to roll the dice and go against all the cdc guidelines, precautions they should take if they want family and friends together. If you are getting together, keep it small. The cdc is saying that the best way to protect yourself is the way we did with your own household and keep it outdoors if possible and take fresh air breaks and open up the windows and masks. People dont want to get together and wear masks, but thats probably the number one thing you can do if youre not eating or drinking keep it on. You have the most adorable family in the world. It is going to be windy, but it does at least come with warmer temperatures not quite in the northeast winds are dying down, but temperatures are really very cold heres your thanksgiving forecast we are watching for the possibility of a storm impacting the east coast again, its still very early to nail in the forecast, but its something to keep in mind. But then what happened, the movie started, and i had to go pee. So the rest of the movie, im sitting there, like, dying i cant say anything to her, and i cant walk away. I cant turn my back on her. It was just agony. It could have been the greatest night of my life it was just a nightmare. So good funny story. Thank you. The entire episode is seven or eight minutes long mind matters at today. Com. Awesome, carson. Theyre fun good stuff. Dilly dilly, last check of the weather. The weather is really not that busy today. Going into the weekend, it actually remains fairly quiet. Look at that, on friday, it will be chilly across the northern plains, but itll warm up on the east coast, the south. Not much going on in the southwest. Quiet pattern. On saturday, we will see rain develop through the midwest, back behind it it starts to dry out and gets a little cooler, too, as temps drop down into the 40s. Nice day in the northeast and through the southeast, too on sunday, that rain will try to move east. We could see it follow snow in upstate new york and vermont later in the day, too. Nice thr good morning. Im meteorologist kari hall. As we take a look at our sevenday forecast, well see some sunshine later today and a really nice afternoon. Seasonable weather continues through the end of the week. Unfortunately, theres no rain headed our way, so we are going to stay very dry, even into wednesday, possibly through thanksgiving. And well see San Francisco temperatures in the upper 50s today and tomorrow, but then were looking at some low 60s into the weekend as that sunshine continues. Thats your latest forecast all right dylan, thank you coming up in a few moments after the break, my conversation about being and raising black men in america with Tanehisi Coates. Information for everyone in this conversation darst, this is to craig, you have a real interesting conversation coming up with journalist and author Tanehisi Coates, craig. His writings on growing up black in america made him one of the leading voices of a generation his best seller between the world and me written five years ago is all about growing up in inner city baltimore, and his life after that. Its a raw and candid look at the comingofage challenges for black people in this country now, that book had been adapted for a film premiering this weekend on hbo reporter Tanehisi Coates is an extraordinary and powerful voice. Hes been writing about the black experience for more than a decade now hes the groundbreaking author of four books, as well as penning popular black panther comic books. In all, he pulls back the curtain on struggles black people face simply growing up in america. His powerful writings have earned him a National Book award, as well as the socalled genius grant from the Mcarthur Foundation what is it like, to have so much good happening to Tanehisi Coates during these extraordinary times . Its good, but i am in a city that was mere months ago, you know, the epicenter of a pandemic. I would much take no pandemic, george floyd still alive, Breonna Taylor still alive ill always have things to write about. Reporter 2015, he published between the world and me, now an hbo movie set to premiere this weekend it is a breathtaking letter to his then 15yearold son about growing up black in america. The dangers, the fears, the unrealized dreams. The book has been recommended by president obama and Nobel Prize Winner Tony Morrison called it required reading you recognize the influence it has on society, especially people who look like me and you, rearing young black men in america. Yes i recognize that it was wellread. I do recognize i can see that reporter i get the sense that maybe you dont think it was as impactful as i think it takes time to judge that, you know what i mean well see. I hope so. Struggle for your grandmother and grandfather. Reporter hbo adaptation features a truly remarkable cast of performers and activists. When you saw it come to life in the hbo film, what did you think . Ensemble experience its a much more collective experience one of the cool things about it is it means something when i write it a certain way, but when angela davis says it, it has a different level of meaning when Phylicia Rashad says it, theres obviously Something Else that they bring. One of the things thats always stayed with me from the book is this line you wrote. You wrote, you never thought it would be okay. You still believe that five years later . Very much so. And the thing i try to get people to is, so i was born in 1975 born and raised in west baltimore. So when i think about baltimore, i think of baltimore being violent. I think of the violence. I think of walking outside and always, you know, head on a swivel, watch out, you know what i mean even when youre not in the environment. The lives of black people, you know, are just different you know what i mean you feel yourself vulnerable theres this kind of hyperawareness that was really intense within the community in which i was raised, and perhaps is less intense now or was less intense when i went out in the world. But the same basic rules were there. Does that make sense reporter yes to me, it makes complete sense but this hyperawareness youre talking about, with all thats happening in our country this year, do you think that this is finally the year where more people get that, more people get that, understand that . I think more people get that Something Different is happening. Its very hard to watch a man be tortured to death for seven, eight minutes, and say, eh like, thats a hard thing to do. Reporter what role should writers and thinkers like yourself, what role should they play i have always thought of my job as looking out on the complexity, the tangled mess of the world, and trying to define some order or clarity. I always saw my job as to illuminate. I asked him, what do you hope your writings accomplish, books, essay, screenplays he says, any time he writes something, he wants it to haunt you. He wants you to wake up the next morning and think about whatever you read, whether related to race or politics well have more on the third hour, with my conversation with mr. Coates including his thoughts on the loss of his friend he went to howard with chadwick boseman, the black panther. And why hes not on social media. He comes off a little bit as a lud qui luddite and we will talk about that. We talk about the evils of social media it is a fascinating conversation. Sensible to me. Yeah. By the way, the premiere of between the world and me, saturday night, hbo anhbo max.
