East bay Health Leaders are waiting for the results of water samples, and a spa remains closed after two people died from legionnaires disease. Thom jensen reports, one supervisor is calling for investigations into all unpermitted spas in Contra Costa County. Reporter Health Officials learned late last week about two deaths from legionnaires disease. And after finding out that both victims recently used the hot tub at richmond zen day spa, they have closed the spa. A third person became infected but recovered. The problem here at this facility was it did not have a county Health Permit. The reason the Health Permit is require is to make sure that these spas are operating properly and safely. Reporter since there was no permit, zen day spa was never inspected. Now the county wants to make sure there are no more massage parlors operating unpermitted spas or pools. We want to see which spas out there that may not have a county Health Permit. Theres no way to know unless but it in and inspect it. Reporter legionnaires disease is rarely transmitted person to person. But when it is aerated in water like jacuzzi jets or steam, people can breathe it in. A woman told us her husband is one of the victims. The county would like to talk to anyone who used the groupons and used the services. We want people to come in who have been at the facility the last 14 days, because they are the ones most at risk. Fevers, chills, coughs, trouble breathing. Reporter those people may already be infected by the legionella bacteria. They took water samples to test for the presence of legionella. They expect preliminary results in the next couple days. The spas owner is cooperating with the investigation. Another freeway shooting. This time sending one person to the hospital in san leandro. It happened just after 2 00 near grand avenue. The victim was rushed to the hospital after they were taken to the police department. Their condition is not known tonight. No arrests have been made. Staying in the east bay, a destructive and downright dangerous scene overnight, the wild sideshow at the antioch marina left people hurt and a car crashing. Reporter at the antioch marina sunday, there are tire marks and clear signs of a sideshow. Its crazy to me. Its crazy. Reporter angela was at the marina today and has lived in antioch for years. A driver hit a hydrant and a woman not related to the sideshow was also hurt and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The driver ran but officers caught up with him and he was arrested. Youll get a large group drinking at the end of the parking lot there and it progresses, and they start doing their doughnuts. Reporter cathy says more needs to be done to prevent sideshows. In sixth grade i was 11 and 12, and i believe he was about 4 14 years older than me. There was touching, kissing, that led up to everything. I never had one. It molded me for what i was the rest of my life. Reporter jane is among the thousands of californians now suing the Catholic Church over child sex abuse claims. A recent law opened a window for claims regardless of when the alleged abuse happened. Jane cant publicly name the suspect until the judge signs off. But he is still alive and recently retired from a long teaching career at a south bay catholic prep school. I want him to know what he did to me was wrong. Reporter our Ongoing Investigation has focussed primarily on new abuse claims against catholic priests. But other lay church employees now face accusations as well. There are many that involve teachers, administrators, coaches. Reporter the law firm represents more than 600 plaintiffs suing the Catholic Church in california, including janes. Each case is different, he says, but the suffering is similar. When you see the vicious cycle of trauma after trauma after trauma, the common emotion they all seem to feel is wanting to numb the pain. Physical pain jane says, thats leading her to confront her past head on. After going to the hospital for shortness of breath last year, she went into sepsis and then a coma. Something happened with my spine. They had to go in and clean it up. I woke up several months later as a quadriplegic. Its caused me to evaluate my purpose here and what ive been through as a child. Shes also been going to therapy, finding new purpose in speaking up for herself and for the countless other victims she says she knows are out there.
