At 11 00, breaking news from the south bay. An attacken the vta bus driver. It happened at the Transit Center in sunnyvale. Several Law Enforcement forces on the scene. The vta driver was taken to the hospital. We dont know what the drivers condition is. As for the person who attacked the driver, the vta tells us, a suspect is in custody but we dont know much more. Our crew at the scene did see some patrol suvs. But we dont know if that is involved in the attack in any way. Well update you on the incident as we learn more. Also tonight, rain on the radar. You see it there. You can see the green on the map. Depending on where you live, it could mean you wake up to wet roads. Jeff ranieri is tracking the change in the weather. Who will get the most . It doesnt look like it will amount to a lot. Showers over santa rosa. Some of that could hold up by 11 32. And for the overnight hours, i see showers over San Francisco and parts of the east bay. Efforts to clean up San Francisco streets back in motion. It comes after a legal battle over homelessness. Its not over yet. The city can resume enforcing laws it hasnt been able to for months. This began when the coalition of homelessness filed a lawsuit, claiming that San Francisco was breaking the law because the people experiencing homelessness was higher than the shelter beds. A judge prevented the city from clearing camps because of that. And the legal battle has been settled on the definition of involuntarily homeless. A court of appeals acknowledged that people are involuntarily homeless if they have access to shelter. People who have been offered available shelter should not be allowed to remain out camping on our streets. The lawsuit is still pending. The injunction is still in place. Our City Attorney is continuing to fight this in court. New at 11 00 tonight, a lot of questions and concerns at a Public Meeting on Hazardous Materials released for the martinez refinery. The following day many people saw dust on their cars and were worried about their health. Theres a toxicology report of up to 24 tons of Chemical Waste into the area. The study focused on metals detected in the soil and did not increase Peoples Health risk. If this keeps happening, the background levels are going to just anytime theres a release, its going to fall within background levels. Im not interested in that. The county says its next phase of the investigation will focus on what caused the incident in the first place. A hitandrun crash has left two east bay families grieving tonight and questioning what led up to the deadly crash that claimed the lives of their loved ones. Reporter the crash scene itself is like a backdrop in a bad dream to one of the victims families who cant belief the woman who held them all together is gone. She loved everybody as her kids. Reporter minutes later, as derek rounded the corner left off of 73rd avenue on to holly street, just blocks from church, they were hit broadside by a stolen lexus g350 traveling at a high speed. Reporter the car was hit so hard, it rolled over into another parked car. And vera and derek died in the crash. Their close friend in the backseat was rushed to the hospital. And i have to go back home. Reporter the 25yearold driver of the stolen lexus was charged with a hitandrun collision. The family questions why he was driving so fast through a residential neighborhood. They want to know if police were in pursuit and why. Opd is only supposed to pursue a suspect who committed a Violent Crime or used a gun in a crime. Just because youre trying to get a criminal and taking other peoples lives. They have to come up with a better plan. Reporter a Spokesman Says the crash is under investigation. Right now, the agency doesnt have any indication indicating there was a pursuit. People have felt that extreme level of lawlessness is something were going to tolerate as a city. Not only is it something that my office and Law Enforcement is going to tolerate but i think San Francisco juries are saying, to the extent they are offer sufficient evidence, enough is enough. Reporter the 27yearold intentionally targeted the victim. After taking off with her phone, the woman tried chasing him. Two Good Samaritans stepped in and one followed gibson in a car until police were able to contain him. This is a serious crime. The brazenness of it is something we have to take seriously. And as people get away with these types of things, theyre emboldened to do others. Reporter others believe prosecution shouldnt be the first piece of fighting crime. A Company Spokesperson says vandals damaged cables in the area, taking down services for many customers. No estimate on when things will be up and running again. In san jose, an investigation is under way after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a car in willow glen. A driver in a honda hit a man crossing the road at the correction of Willow Street and meridian avenue. It happened around 6 00 this morning. The man was in the crosswalk but the driver had the green light. The city of oakland is hoping lower speed limits will make its streets safer. The new limits apply to 11 corridors from fruitvale to uptown. The program will continue for the next two years, with a goal to reduce the speed limit in 50 nucor dors. Health care workers are preparing to go on strike. If it happens, it would be the largest strike in history. More than 75,000 kaiser workers are planning a threeday strike next wednesday. They include medical assistants, housekeeping staff. The workers are asking for better pay. And among all things, better staffing. We personally feel like the forgotten heroes of it all. Everybody and rightfully so, respects their nurse. Everybody respects their doctors opinion. But were the people behind the scenes making all these things happen fluid. Theres been an uptick of crime in the county and more needs to be done to invest in police services. His promise is to start with the Police Protection district. Hes asking for 750,000 in voterapproved funds to help with the staffing shortage. And to address a recent rise in theft and property crimes. We need to invest. Thats why the money is so important. To help with the shortages in police staffing. We need to do this. If we do nothing, this community does not have a police department.
