First of all, there is more time to gather intelligence for israel, to train their reserve soldiers. 300,000 reserve soldiers called up in the army. Theyre not on the ball. They need training, so there is more time to train them. But its interesting. The same time as there is pressure inside israel to take on hamas and end this problem once and for all, you have 300,000 families of the reservists worried about their children. We are back, marking 40 years since the beirut barracks bombing, a terror attack against the United States Service Members in a region that once again is in the spotlight. Yeah. Images last week show protesters clashing with Security Forces near the u. S. Embassy in lebanon. Overnight, the embassy issued a security alert urging u. S. Citizens who wish to depart lebanon to leave now due to the unpredictable security situation. It was tension like this that three marine veterans will never forget as they remember their brothers that gave their lives. Harry smith has this story 40 years ago the embassy was attacked in lebanon, in the spring 40 years ago. So into this, you know, beirut used to be known as the paris of the middle east, right lebanon devolves into a civil war in 1975. Influenced in some cases by some of the same factions still at work in that part of the world and into that chaos, 1,200 u. S. Marines were sent as peace keepers. Reporter we met three of them at the beirut memorial in jacks jacksonville, North Carolina david madeiras. Do you remember why you signed up for the marine corps i needed my rear end straightened out. Are. Reporter manny simons. They were saying the marine corps is tough, so i wanted to find out how tough. Reporter dan joy i thought, ill be making hoagies the rest of my life. Joined the marine corps and never looked back. Reporter so you were on a Peace Keeping mission . Yes. Reporter what did that mean . When we went out on patrols, people were very happy to see us you had a lot of people telling us they loved america. We had candy bars we bought from the ship. We loved it. Reporter that welcome wore thin and early on a sunday morning, a massive explosion. I saw the mushroom cloud, looked like a tactical nuke, over the top of the building i got up on the radio. Reporter joy was about a half mile away. I said the building is gone. I cannot see the building. Reporter a suicide bomber in a truck had breached security. On board, an estimated six tons of explosives. Madeiras was dozing in a tent nearby. All of a sudden, there is a gigantic blast the tent gets ripped over the top of my head i feel this wave of heat whoosh across my face at that point in time, it is like, all right, i got to try to go around here and do the best i can to find guys that are alive and get them the heck out of here. Reporter buried inside the rubble was manny simmons. I was laying facedown on my stomach and trying to figure out what happened. I started calling out, hey hey, get me out of here then somebody heard it and they said, were coming to get you, bud were coming to get you. Reporter 220 marines were killed that day. 18 more from the navy. 3 from the army. Manny simmons was medevaced to germany. His body burned and broken he was unable to move. I prayed. And i said, god, if you let me move again, im not going to stop and i dont stop i still train, exercise and recently i just had two replaced knees. I got a couple replacement parts, too, brother. Reporter just so you know, manny would serve in the marines for 27 years because the guys i used to hang out with over there, we always talked about retiring. Well, i wanted to do that for them. Reporter does it feel to you like that was a day thats been forgotten . Probably so yep. You say beirut, what was beirut we went over there as peace keepers. We came back at combat veterans. Wow i never thought about it that way. Reporter these marines are frequent visitors to a memorial close to the gates of camp lejeune. I tell them. Im talking to the fellas. Reporter they remember the names, the men they served with. They want you to know them, too. Warren richardson, that guy was freakin hilarious. Stowe, we called him dave yeah, david lewis he could do 100 pushups straight he bet me that night, and i still have that same dollar. There is a line in the marine corps hymn that says, the streets of heaven are guarded by United States marines. That wall right there is the duty roster for 23 october 1983. And those marines are getting kind of chapped up because we havent come to relieve them yet. Wow. Oh, my gosh. These days that happened in history, and they seem to exist on our news cycle for just those brief seconds. Well, that lasted a lot more than a couple seconds for those guys, and especially those people on that wall because here it is, that anniversary. And, you know, for us to just take a moment lest we forget really important. Thank you. Thank you for the opportunity to tell the story thank you for that story. Think about each name, each individual there, 200 plus names on that wall. All the 23families thanks for letting us know about that memorial. Right oh, it is amazing.
