Reporter tonight the thomas fire north of los angeles has been roaring back to life chewing through 3,000 acres the past 24 hours, infernos spawning new evacuations in the town of fillmore. When you see this palm tree burn, what is incredible is the sheer size of those embers and thats how a fire like this jumps over firefighters containment lines. The numbers as staggering as the flames. The fourth largest fire in california history scorching 400 square miles, nearly a thousand structures destroyed more than 90 people forced from their homes. Back here a second sea lion attack in as many days has Public Safety officials on alert. The National Park service has closed aquatic park to swimmers. It is not far from Fishermans Wharf and pier 39 where those iconic sea lions live. Reporter danger signs kept most swimmers out of the water throughout the day, but we did see some sneak in a few laps. The die hards will be out here anyway. Will it keep you out of the water . Ill take the fifth on that. San Francisco Police want you to take the warning seriously. The closure comes after two people were attacked by a sea lion within 24 hours. The latest happened at 8 00 this morning when the aquatic park was filled with swimmers. We see seals and sea lions all the time when we swim. Its pretty unusual to be bitten. Officials say a man was bit in the groin area. He was on board this sailboat when he heard the mans distress call. I hear these screams from right at the head of the entrance to the harb and i looked over there and the guy was screaming, screaming, screaming. Thats when nearby swimmers went to the mans aid. Yesterdays attack also happened near the coves entrance. The bites deep enough both men were sent to the hospital. Both bites were fairly serious. I think both are doing okay right now. But its more than just a little nip. So we want to close the cove to swimmers and try to keep people out of there for safety and try to assess the situation. Park rangers say incidents like this are extremely unusual. The last time people were bitten by a sea lion in San Francisco ws about 11 years ago also at aquatic park. While the signs may not keep everyone out, officials caution enter at your own risk. So we wont be swimming probably close to the opening, you know, out there so much. Only the brave ones. Officials will monitor the situation, but the plan for now is to reopen monday. At aquatic park, abc 7 news. The 56yearold swimmer attacked yesterday by a sea lion showed off the injuries to abc 7 news today. I had been approached by sea lions before, but none were as aggressive as this guy. He came over to me and attacked me. Christian infelt said it ended up sinking a tooth in his upper forearm. He came at me from the right and i blocked him like this and his head slid down my arm and one tooth went into my forearm here. Christian says he was oozing blood quickly when he managed to flag down a sailboat. He was rushed to San FranciscoGeneral Hospital where doctors now expect him to make a full recovery. He was a mayor for the people of San Francisco. And today thousands came out to say farewell to mayor ed lee who, as you know, died unexpectedly early tuesday morning. Late tonight the mayors body was moved from San Francisco se hall after lying in state all day under the rotunda. Visitation ended this evening at 7 00. Members of the police and Sheriffs Department served as pallbearers. They carried the casket to a waiting hearse. Hundreds paid their respects today, some of them bowing before the flag draped casket. This so many farewell and the impact it is having on the city. Reporter people from all walks of life waited in line to say farewell to the former mayor, a man they say embraced humility. So calm and humble. Many stood across from his casket to bow three times, a sign of respect for mayor ed lee and his family. Most acknowledged him for never forgetting the citys moral obligation to diversitdiversity. Nancy pelosi was among those paying tribute to the former mayor. Joe biden has a saying. And the mavericks competition in Half Moon Bay is breaking news. A fatality this evening on a freeway in dublin has led to the closure of interstate 680. The Highway Patrol has shut down the highway in the southbound direct at the connector ramp to 580. Thats where a person was hit by one car at 8 30, about 45 minutes ago. The coroner has been called to the scene. Drivers should expect delays because of that closure. Vandals have attacked some religious statues at a Catholic Church in hayward. The statues depict three children praying before the virgin mary. The heads of three of the statues was cut off at the neck and there is damage to a lamb statue. It happened a few weeks ago. The church issued a statement saying withy pray for mercy for those harmed by this act, the perpetrators and all who are affected by violence. Police are investigating. Well, guess what . The mavericks big week surf competition is coming back to Half Moon Bay. After last years was scrapped because of financial problems. And for the first time the worlds best female big wave surfers will be competing as well. Melanie wood row has the story. We talk about storms. We do have a system passing through. Unfortunately for the bay area, its a dry system. It will kick up the winds. We are seeing some clouds and in the sierra nevada, take a look at this loop. Were taking you back in time the last three hours. Snow showers developed at the highest elevations, not at tahoe, not at truckee, were talking about over 10,000 feet elevation, but at least were getting something out of this storm in terms of precipitation. I think we are better off with it. The final bill slashes the Corporate Tax rate from 35 to 21 , a big win for big business. For individuals, it lowers the top tax rate from 39 to 37 . A big win for the wealthy. But it limits the new mortgage Interest Deduction to 750,000. Republican senators say their priority is tax relief for the middle class. Overall, the benefits will go primarily to people in the middle class. Reporter what does the middle class get from the bill . It doubles the standard deduction and you can still deduct interest on your current mortgage. But people will only be able to deduct 10,000 combined from state, local and property taxes. And the individual mandate could leave 13 million more americans uninsured. The middle class could end up paying more. Youve seen the criticism of this bill. Why do you think the wealthiest need another tax cut . Thats exactly wrong. This delivers and prioritizes middle class tax relief.
