Next came dialysis and tubes and now jessica says her mom needs a kidney transplant. Im really worried because all of the time shes waiting for that kidney she can get worse. She learned how to adapt early in life. My parents are both political refugees. They came here with nothing. We started from the bottom. I moved around a lot. I moved to oregon for three months, then came back to california. So theres definitely financial instability that was going on. Dealing with my parents not being able to be there for me because they have to go to work all day from morning to night, i had to become independent with that. I just immersed into education because that was my outlet. Reporter she believes a College Degree will lead to a better paying job and a way to repay her parents. They sacrificed their whole life for me. Basically my parents retirement is relying on my and my siblings. We dont have savings account. We live paycheck to paycheck. Based on the sacrifices, im okay with being their retirement because theyre my parents. Reporter shes been dancing in class and in church for as long as she can remember. As amber lee describes it, she feels like shes in the clouds. If i black out the rest of the world and everything else, dancing. As a child, i didnt know what i was escaping. It was normal for me to walk around with my friends like be out late at night, go out, party, do all those things in middle school. No one told me i couldnt do it. He and his brothers were left to fend for themselves. Doing little odd jobs with my brothers and eating and paying for fast food, finding things to scavenge around for and to eat. Reporter in 6th grade tyler had his own light bulb moment. He discovered running. I remember running 14 miles one day like in middle school because i got like so angry. Reporter the constant rhythm of his feet hitting the ground gave him time to think. After his sophomore year in High School Tyler left his family in georgia to live with his cousins here in the bay area, what he calls a cherished decision. Probably wouldnt be here, probably wouldnt be in college. This was my dads dream and like i promised him 10 years ago, you know, i will walk this stage and become a successful person. Reporter the journey to this day began a decade ago. Brenda valdez came to live with her grandparents here in the bay area to escape relentless bullying.
