Defined in many ways by seismology and by these quakes. The quake was so powerful that people in the bay area felt it, especially up in high rises. The shaking triggered elevators to shut down at a condo complex in downtown san jose. People they recorded video of light fixtures swaying, doors opening and shutting and furniture shaking. They told us they felt more of a rocking sensation, rather than a shake. They said it lasted for what seemed like a couple of minutes. A construction worker was installing tile downtown when he felt the ground start to move. I was using the tile saw and it felt like the tile saw was going to tip over. When i went to my partner i said did you feel that . It was more of a rolling feeling, kind of like on a boat or Something Like that. Very scary. It makes us wonder here in Northern California, if it is going to trigger something here. 300 miles north of where it all happens, we have our own looming problems. The biggest Natural Disaster threat facing everybody in the area is a big shake on the hayward fault. It springs to life behind fremont, continues into San Pablo Bay, and at any time it could trigger a quake that would easily be bigger than the two quakes that just hammered the southland. One of the scenarios we think is very credible is that an earthquake actually starts in San Pablo Bay and ruptures in two different directions. How big a magnitude would that be . 7. 27. 3. We really have not had an earthquake of that size in a modern american city. The hayward fault is really the most highly populated fault in the united states. And for its 35 mile length default slices directly through hundreds of east bay homes and businesses and has been building up strength since the last time it really popped 150 years ago in 1868. The average time between big quakes on the hayward . About 150 years. A very general average. Imagine cell towers out, water lines down, electricity gone for three days, and you unable to contact your kids. It is a good idea to plan for that kind of scenario, and more, now. Jackie ward is near the hayward fault and she is live on grizzly peak. You spoke with a geophysicist is a, today, what did he have to say . Reporter he said this is a really good reminder for those of us who live in the bay area to get ready for whenever the next big one hits. He also explained the relationship between the fault line i am standing on, the hayward line, and the following to our south. Oh my god, oh my gosh. Reporter geophysicist say that shaking like this may last for the next few days and he would be surprised to see more large magnitude activity in the fours and fives which he explains is quite normal for that area. This, however, is far enough from the san andreas that we do not expect any interaction between fault in our area. Reporter as a geophysicist in the bay area, they havent seen anything out of the norm. Nothing over a magnitude 3 or anything significant. If you are wondering what the next big one may feel like the ridgecrest fault orientation is a lot like what we have in the bay area. The depth of the earthquake is more or less what we would expect in the bay area. So, the shaking that was felt locally in the ridgecrest area was very similar to what we would feel in the event of a san andreas, hayward or calaveras type event of this magnitude. Experts say there is a 3 chance of a large earthquake happened between now or the next couple of days and the likelihood will continue to decrease as time passes. We are really on the boundary between the pacific plate and the north american plate. The san andreas is sort of the main player in accommodating the definition between the two. But there are other zones across california, and even nevada, to take up the relative motion between those two plates. Reporter the bottom line is that everything here in the bay area has remained normal. But, we can expect the same kind of motion they are experiencing down south to possibly happen here. In berkeley, jackie ward, kpix5. We will have a leverage report from ridgecrest later in this newscast and we are continually updating the situation on kpix. Com. The front door came open, that is okay, that is okay, just hold on. Hold on. Our top story at 6 30 the fallout from the powerful 7. 1 earthquake in Southern California. Right now, officials are assessing the damage in the wake of lassens quake the biggest one in 20 years. It was also the second biggest southland quake in as many days. And 11 times larger. 6. 4 magnitude foreshock on the same fault near ridgecrest. The region is seen nearly 5000 active shots shocks since thursday. The main earthquake shake the buildings, rupture gas lines, and cracked foundations in Southern California. Near the epicenter, dozens of homes and serious damage. One man who went through both quakes described how he wrote at the second bigger one. The last one was more quick faster. And it lasted longer. So, i just hang on to my refrigerator. I just grab my refrigerator and stayed with it. This latest quake may not be the end of it according to the usgs. There is a 27 chance of another magnitude 6 within the next week and a 3 chance we will see another seven. Let us go live to reporter paul. He is in ridgecrest covering the first quake. When the second one hit last night at eight 18 p. M. 8 18 p. M. Paul was like to go through a 7. 1 . Reporter brian, it was the biggest earthquake i have ever been in. And i have been in the northridge earthquake 6. 7 in los angeles. We were on the street, fortunately, a lot better to be on the street then here in this restaurant i am in right now which is now closed. We went to the middle of the street hearing powerlines may come down. Then right after that we saw the smoke come up and we knew instantly the calling card of an earthquake. We had a massive or possible gas line roger. Quite often this happens near water heaters and homes, we went over there, went into journalism mode and were covering that and all the other things going on. But, i dont care who you are, you sit through a large earthquake, and all of a sudden, you know that lump in your throat just kind of moves down to the pit of your stomach. It is high anxiety time, as it still is for everybody here in ridgecrest. As you might have heard, we have had many big aftershocks, just a short time ago a 4. 4. Those come clattering and rolling through here, jangled peoples nerves all over again. Absolutely, you obviously felt the foreshock and then the 7. 1. Did the second one have more of a jolt for a longer period of time . Or describe what you were feeling. Reporter yes, everything, we will put it this way, it was bigger, it was longer, i felt more of a shift from side to side. Let us contrast this, i felt the first one in los angeles and then i was here for the second one. I was on the third story of a 15 Story Building in a labor being in the wide open, there were a lot of surreal things that happened. For one we have showed video of a mobile home that had been knocked off of its jacks or platform, somehow the second quake, the big one, not to back on its platform. As you described, there were these gas fires. But we saw very quick workmate of those. And then you go through and see, for example, a guys liquor store who suffered about 100,000 in damage the estimates or in losses. His inventory is both shattered, wine bottles and liquor bottles everywhere. And, he has to repair equipment. It has been a rough go of it for some of the Business Owners and yet, if there is some sort of silver lining, there are not mass casualties. We did not see dramatic injuries. We do not see people suffering from, you know, awful wounds you might get in an urban center like San Francisco when glass starts falling from Tall Buildings and falling on people. This is a high desert valley, with a lot of lowslung one story structures and, of course, california is very strict retrofitting laws have done a lot to make things safer. Dont forget, in the last three decades, there are many of commercial Property Owners and let us say a rental Property Owner who asked how the earthquake retrofitting. But in instances like this, you do not see the unreinforced brick masonry buildings that can causes so much damage in other weakened buildings. This helps pretty good here in ridgecrest. The problem we have in the bay area is of the hayward fault goes directly through buildings. It intersects buildings. No one matter what you do to retrofit to those they will be separated by about 36 feet if there is a big quake on the hayward fault. We hear a lot about ridgecrest which is where we are seeing the pictures of the liquor store, has the naval Weapons Research center, the navys biggest, by far in the world. Have they reported how they came through this quake . They were closer to it than ridgecrest was . Reporter yes. Now, they are also in a unique position of being in that base in china lake. From what we understand, we have not heard any significant damage. There is an interesting twist to the story. We saw some geologists. The scientists are going to map out and measure cracks. They call it chasing the fault line. They wanted to go south and look at where this fault line had gone and a lot of it is important because in california cant build anywhere near a fault line anymore. He wanted to go on to the military base and right now, i kind of chuckled, they did not get the permits to do it. I think they will a little later but right now they said that they do not have access as they stared down at a barbed wire cyclone fence. They are still being shaken up by magnitude 3 quakes and i envy you Paul Vercammen life for us in ridgecrest. It is going for quite a bit everybody. It continues. This is a very strong quake. 8 21 on the air, we are experiencing very strong shaking. I think we need to get under the desk. Our colleagues were on the air when the studio started shaking. As you can see, keep in mind, they were 150 miles away from the epicenter. Now, of course no one is ever prepared for the ground to suddenly start moving. But you can, and should, be ready for the aftermath. Do you have an earthquake kit . No, i do not. How come . I got lazy. And with a rollout of 5g which could require many more towers, the issue of unintended financial risk could also impact homeowners. A study published by the National Organization of realtors found that 94 of homebuyers say they are less interested and would pay less for a property near a cell tower. And now they must be disclosed with new since or other problems related to cell towers. The greater the risk, the greater the duty to disclose. .
