Thank you for thinking healthy, ohio. Sit safely in your car while eating your deep fried oreos. On cbs this morning. Into the cup. A little right. Im dialing it in. Im so excited because i havent seen sports in so long. Im just enjoying watching this. What is that . A pingpong ball . Its an actual indoor i dont know what you call it. Whoa thats it its in there yes i got my fix. This mornings eye opener is presented by toyota. Welcome to cbs this morning. Anthony, everybody is looking for a sports fix, including, it seems, steph curry who is so good at what he does. It doesnt take much, gayle. That gave me a lot of pleasure. Its just anything will do it right now. I agree. I agree. We are starving for it. We begin, though, with new long delayed guidelines from the cdc for schools and businesses looking to reopen during this pandemic. Now this comes as President Trump continues to feud with some of his own experts. He and his chief of staff were th people not wearing facility in ay during a visit pennsylvania. Meanwhile, a whistleblower is alleging a dangerous lack of leadership in the federal coronavirus response. Dr. Rick bright testified he believes the governments actions put millions of americans at risk, including medical workers. He says if nothing changes, the worst may be yet to come. Weijia jiang reports from the white house. Our window of opportunity is closing. Reporter dr. Rick bright issued a stark warning if the administration doesnt step up its response to covid19. 2020 could be the darkest winter in modern history. Reporter bright told lawmakers the federal governments response has already failed to protect some americans. Lives are in danger. I believe lives were lost. Reporter and he said early signs of drug and gear shortages were ignored. Ill never forget the emails i received indicating that we are our mask supply or n95 mask supply was decimated. And he said, were in deep [ bleep ]. I pushed that forward to the highest levels i could in hhs. I got noresponse. Reporter President Trump dismissed brights accusations. I watched him. He looks like an angry, disgruntled employee who, frankly, according to some people, didnt do a very good job. Reporter and suggested that a vaccine was not far away. I think were going to have a vaccine by the end of the year. Reporter but bright said that was overly optimistic. A lot of optimism is swirling around a 12 to 18month time frame. If everything goes perfectly. Weve never seen everything go perfectly. Reporter hours after bright testified that there is still no master plan, the cdc issued some longdelayed guidance for reopening schools and businesses. But cbs news has learned its a less detailed version of an earlier draft that the white house criticized as overly prescriptive. Cbs news contributor dr. David agus said the guidelines dont adequately show states how to reopen safely. These guidelines are watered down. They went from what is reported to be a 63page document to, you know, a single digit page set of simple guidelines. And the details on how do we do and how do enact things were just taken out. Reporter as dr. Agus just mentioned, that 63page document was boiled down into these six single page memos covering topics like workplace, restaurants andschools. But the guidance is very general and many cases the same with broad suggestions like promote good hygiene and have a plan if employees get sick. A Senior Administration official tells cbs news americans do not have the time to read 63 pages and the cdc says they will publish more guidance in the coming days and weeks. Anthony . Weijia, thank you. The cdc is also alerting doctors about a serious newfo at least three dozen three deaths. Dozens of children have contracted the syndrome called pmis linked to the coronavirus. Meanwhile, the fda warns that a popular coronavirus test may give inaccurate results. The white house uses it on President Trump and his staffers every day and the president has praised it repeatedly. A new test that was just developed by abbott, which is almost instantaneous, which is going to be great. We have something from abbott labs which is right here. And thats a fiveminute test. Highly accurate. The ultra fast. Its very accurate. Abbott labs. I want to thank them. Theyve been fantastic. Abbott labs disputed the results of the study that led to the fdas warning. It says its accuracy rate is significantly higher and used the tests in a way they werent designed for. It will clarify guidelines for testing n ining and continue toe the test as we learn more about the virus. The fda gave that test emergency authorization back in late march. Only on cbs this morning, fda commissioner stephen hahn joins us now. Good morning. We should remind viewers you were in a selfquarantine after a positive coronavirus case in the white house. And here we are talking about the potential for missed positives. The nyu study is not peer reviewed. Thats important to point out. But nyu seems to be taking action based on it. Theyll not use the abbott test in their clinical settings they say. So that raises the question, dr. Hahn. Should this test continue to be. Thank you for having me. Important for everyone to recognize that a point of care test in general, regardless of the disease were talking about, would have a lower sensitivity than a test thats based in the laboratory. We have known that for years. In this particular case, the data that we use to perform the emergency use authorization, were data that were very robust. Revisionslways do is look at sn to our original decision. In this case, what were saying is that there are some data to suggest that there may be inaccuracies, false negatives with the abbott test. However, there are many users who have contacted us and have not had this problem. So fda is digging into it. And were working with abbott to actually look at what data are available to get the most uptodate and Accurate Information about the test performance. And that being said, the test is on the market. We continue to recommend its use or to have it available for use. But we want to make sure that providers have the information that about the operating characteristics of the test, about what the test does. For example, if a person uses you suspect a doctor suspects a person has the disease it may be worth if the test is negative getting a second confirmatory test. Thats what our guidance is about. So dr. Hahn, inside the white house, given what you know now with the nyu study and the questions raised over the test, are you going to continue to use the test as you have been . Would you recommend that . So were providing guidance to the white house regarding this test. We have been on an ongoing basis, and well continue to do that. That will be a white house decision. Up to them, okay. This test has also been used in driveby testing nationally. And it raises questions about our capability. Where are we with testing, and are we where we need to be to reopen the economy safely, in your view . So we worked with over 400 test developers. Weve issued almost 100 emergency use authorization. Thats authorizations to have test goes to market. And we continue to work with close to 300 test developers. Weve not taken our foot off the pedal with respect to this. The administration has encouraged us to facilitate innovation. So we recognize the need to get more tests on the market. And were working with developers to do that. There are some Great Developers out there and we continue to work on that. Dr. Hahn, what is the hold up . The white house says 300,000 tests per day is what were currently at. Independent experts say we need double or triple that. Whats it going to take to go from where we are to where we need to be, and whats stopping us . So there are a number of factors that are related to this. One is, we need to make sure we have the data and the science before we authorize a test. Understanding that in an emergency situation, were going to have a certain set of data and were going to have to make a decision based upon those data. As the new technologies, which havent been used before in the diagnostic setting for infections like covid19, as these technologies come forward, well have to look at those data and make sure they support the use of the test moving forward. So thats one of the issues. Dr. Hahn now we see this Unprecedented Demand for the test. Dr. Hahn, we have to go, but i want to ask you a simple yes or no as we depart here. The white house has put the onus on states to run testing and Contact Tracing and make decisions on reopening. Politically we understand why that may be a good decision. As a Public Health decision, yes or no, is that the best approach . I think very unique circumstances in the states. The governors understand what best happens in the states and well provide them as much support as we possibly can to make the absolute best Public Health decisions. Is that a yes or a no . Thats what i told you was the truth. We provide support because the states best understand whats happening in their state. All right. Dr. Hahn, thank you very much. We hope you continue to have an easy selfquarantine and that you remain healthy. Gayle, over to you. Thank you, tony. We do want dr. Hahn healthy. 48 states have at least partially reopened amid staggering unemployment numbers. Tens of millions of americans are out of work and many are struggling to afford food. Our dallasft. Reporter President Donald Trump cheered the wisconsin decision as a win for the state. In pennsylvania thursday, he called out that states democratic Governor Tom Wolf for reopening slowly. The governor of kentucky wants federal and state investigators to look into a Deadly Police shooting two months after it happened. Louisville police shot and killed 26yearold Breonna Taylor in her apartment during a botched drug raid. Errol barnett is following this story. Theres been a lot of conversation going back and forth about, how do we get the truth out on this . Reporhe l i investigation into the death of Breonna Taylor and pass it to commonwealth and federal officials. Both officers will have an opportunity to review the investigation and make any decisions they want to make from there. Reporter the 26yearold was shot and killed march 13s when Louisville Police raided her home. The search warrant states authorities thought this man, jamarcus glover, was using taylors apartment for his Mailing Address and to stash drugs and money. Officers later discovered that glover had been arrested shortly before the raid. Ben crump represents taylors family. This was a completely unnecessary and unjustifiable killing of an innocent woman. As we go through issue after issue where we see communities of color involved in incidents like this, as a country, we need to do much better. That includes my city as well. Reporter it is worth noting that an Adrian Walker is named in the search warrant, but any link between him and kenneth walker, the boyfriend who shot up police, is not yet known. We should make it clear there is no publicly known connection between Breonna Taylor and jamarcus glover, the man Police Allege was stashing drugs in her apartment. There are growing concerns this morning over who is turning out for demonstrations against Public Safety measures in the coronavirus crisis. Protesters swarmed michigans State Capitol again yesterday over statewide stayathome orders. Some of them had guns. Bigguns. The states governor says shes concerned about possible racist elements among the crowd. Jericka duncan reports on what some say is a pattern of very unsettling incidents. Reporter a third protest at the michigan State Capitol thursday as demonstrators there continue to rebel against the governors coronavirus restrictions. This time, a fight broke out between demonstrators over a dog with a noose around its neck. Organizers of the protest quickly distanced themselves from the incident. It comes two weeks after protesters, some armed, walked into the Capitol Building in another attempt to rally against the states shutdown. These have been these have been really political rallies where people come with confederate flags and nazi symbolism and calling for violence. This is not appropriate in a global pandemic, but its certainly not an exercise of democratic principles. Reporter in chicago, a photo of a Woman Holding a sign with the phrase similar to the one displayed over the gates of several concentration camps has gone viral. And in ra leagleigh, north caro police have reviewed this interaction between a demonstrator and a black family from last weekend. That experience was terrifying and surreal. Reporter deonte and beth thomas were out on a walk to celebrate mothers day weekend when they came across the armed group. One man, carrying a pipe wrench, is seen crossing the street while thomas asked him to stay away from his family. Thomas says he was forced to keep his composure because of the armed men just feet away. Just a millisecond im thinking, if i jump on him, if i fight him, im going to get shot. It sucks i still get emotional about it and hopefully me getting emotional about it will pass quickly. How quickly, you know, i could have been another hash tag. Reporter the man with the wrench, perry whitlock, did not respond to our request for comment. He spoke to our affiliate wncn about the interaction. I just was hoping to like give him a highfive and say, come join us. You see people across the street with guns and one person starts walking at you with a pipe wrench. I think most people would have a certain physiological reaction to that that spells danger. Reporter rashawn ray is a professor of sociology at the university of maryland. He says no matter the intent, runins like this can leave a lasting impression. Even though people say that nothing physical happened, there is a history. There are tons of incidents where weve seen black men stand up for themselves and all of a sudden, they are the ones who become victimized. They are the ones who end up meeting their demise. During a pandemic when people are scared, people are anxious, people are losing jobs, people dont have money, that inequality in particular racial inequality continues to surface. Reporter the group that whitlock was walking with last weekend is known as the blue igloo. Its a Facebook Group and pro gun rights group. While a spokesperson from that organization told cbs news that whitlock is not a member, but they did reiterate that he did nothing violent. No, he did nothing violent, but i can see where it would be terrifying for people walking. I prefer a highfive without a big long pipe wrench. Rick bright claims he was unjustly removed from his post for refusing to support an unproven drug promoted by the president. Bright says he is still concerned the white house lacks a comprehensive plan, and he believes federal inaction early in the pandemic led to more deaths. In response, President Trump called bright an angry and disgruntled employee. Yesterday the president toured a pennsylvania facility that produces protective equipment, but he did not wear a mask. And Norah Odonnell has an interview with dr. Bright on 60 minutes this sunday night. Every friday we are taking the time to answer your most pressing questions. You have a lot of them about the coronavirus. At least 19 states and washington d. C. Announced new cases of a Mysterious Illness in children that is potentially related to the virus. So this raises Major Concerns as the u. S. Starts to reopen and President Trump pushes to open schools. Cbs news senior medical correspondent dr. Tara narula joins us. I note the title change. Kudos to you. Before we answer audience questions, we want to talk about an alert from the cdc that is talking about a potentially deadly syndrome in children with coronavirus. What can you tell us about that . Well, gayle, weve been talking about this the last couple days. What they did is basically create a Case Definition so we have a better idea of how to define cases. That includes fever in children that lasts more than 24 hours. Clinically severe disease that requires hospitalization, and ganemnvolvement of more than two itiono that, child would have to have evidence on labs of infection with covid or previous infection with covid or expoture in the last four weeks to someone with covid. And finally, it has to be ruled out that theres no other possible alternative diagnosis. If you meet all the criteria, youre defined as having the multisystem inflammatory system. Its important because if doctors begin to report this to state and local health officials, we can get a better idea of what this syndrome looks like. Everybody is concerned about their kids. Heather asks this question. How and when will it be safe for our children to go outside on a play date . I wish i had the answer for heather. And sometimes the answer is we dont know. Unfortunately, in this cas were talking about it in e idea ofing in arte now isbl at least for the next s weeks, i think to months. But its really remains to be seen. Lindsey wants to know what kind of mask are best for kids . I see parents outside. Sometimes their kids are Wearing Masks and sometimes theyre not. What masks are best for kids . A mask that a kid will wear, gayle. Some of these homemade cloth masks are perfect. The cdc has a website. We went to it ourselves. And we used an old t shirt. I have an example here. We cut it out. One where you dont have to sew, one where you can. It fitseild face. You can wnd you some l shirt oblanket. Reserve the surgical masks for the health care workers. And if you make the homemade masks, the kids can decorate them. Kids under two should not wear a mask just as a side note. Yeah. Thats what i was going to ask you. Do you think all children should wear masks. You answered that. People are starting to think about school openings, although most of the schools are closed right now. But myra is asking how can we safely social distance Elementary School students and how can we prepare for schools to reopen . Its going to require creativity and planning. One big thing is going to be staggering. Staggering arrival and dismissal times and when kids, for example, go to the library or in the hallway or have lunch. And even staggering days when you have school. Some kids might go to school monday, wednesday, friday. Some go in the morning or afternoon. Then theres going to be redesign of classrooms so you have the desks sort of all back to back, six feet apart. And even face shields on the desks and avoiding large gatherings like assemblies. All right. Thank you, tara. Senior medical correspondent for cbs this morning. Congrats. Were happy about that. Thank you. Anthony . Thank you both. Since were coming to you from home, were going to their a story with each other and all of you that is a talk of our personal tables this morning. Anthony, youre up first. Okay, well, since its friday and its been another long week, arent they all these days, i decided we could all use some penguins. So here are some from the Kansas City Zoo who took a special field trip during the coronavirus shutdown. A family strolled through the museum of art in kansas city and the penguins seem to react much better to them and he also says they miss their human visitors. And the reason i love this, because i miss the penguins at the central park zoo and i miss going to museums. So i got two in one here. Gayle . I know, anthony, im with you. I miss everybody, so i can understand the how the penguins feel. My talk of the table is very different for me because im talking about Tony Dokoupil. Why am i talking about Tony Dokoupil, because youre talking about Tony Dokoupil online. Word is, take a look at this picture, he was caught taking a little break on the job. On tuesday, the viewers saw him with his head down for a brief period of time. The clip has made the rounds on social media with some accusing him of dozing of and some are wondering, is he okay. If youre sleeping thats okay, youre going 24 7 we appreciate it. Someone else said give that man a coffee. The other said, give him a break, hes taking a nap, he was a father. He must be exhausted. Teddy didnt let him sleep. So Tony Dokoupil, im not putting you on blast. First thing, i think youre looking down reading thats what i was thinking. Well, i mean, i guess no one sas down and certainut wl adg as t upbeat music played. I was preparing for my interview to come, with with Michael Hayden i think no. Anyway, you know, but if i had been sleeping martin dempsey. It was martin dempsey. Im the father of a newborn who keeps me up all through the night. But when i told my wife about it, she looked at the clip, she said its obvious youre reading the ipad. She has seen me at the breakfast table in both poses. The falling asleep pose and the reading pose and the falling asleep pose is more of a head to the side, kind of the drool trailing off. I will say the response has been great. One viewer in utah, larry cooke wrote, i had no idea who you were until you took a nap on the job. Well played. So we can file that under all i like that. All news is good news and move on. Good news. But wait a second, tony, anthony, i thought, oh, my gosh, anthony, if tony is falling asleep while were on air, were in big, big trouble. So i wanted to make sure people know that were not boring, he was reading. I was prepping, there it is. There you go. Oh, yeah, my turn now. All right. Im going to twin sisters in milwaukee are doubly excited right now as they get ready for college. Ariana and Ariel Williams are graduating at the top of the High School Class and get this, they were accepted to 38 colleges and offered more than 1 million in scholarships cumulatively and they decided to attend Marquette University where they were accepted into te nursing program. They say tuition is pretty much covered. They said, its okay to fail, and go above and beyond. Heres why i love this story, theyre in competition but if their view its two chances to win. One ends up being valedictorian and one comes in second. Theyre competing but theyre winning as long as one gets to the top and theyre First Generation College students. They decided to strike a balance, theyll do it at home. Close to home, anyway. Theyre in milwaukee. So they can still stay in touch with family while taking the leap into whats next. Anthony, so thats my talk of the table. Ill wait for it. I love that story. Congratulations to both of them. Its great news. I love hearing these stories about life going on and new horizons for people, especially now. All right.
