Could be making Weather Forecasts less accurate. Its all because of the steep drop in the number of commercial flights. Thats according to a new study. It found the world lost 50 to 75 of its aircraft observations because of grounded flights. Those readings are crucial for accurate forecasts by recording temperature and winds along flight paths. Its not affecting our forecast on marine layer at all and we still have many other tools are that looked at, the satellites that are going, the weather balloons launched. Take a look at the days story. We did the complete opposite from yesterday. Yesterday, the focus in the forecast was how much we warmed up inland. Today, we cool down by just about that same amount. Current numbers right now, concord 83, livermore 84. Oakland 68. Those numbers are not all that different. These two are. If we look at the map that shows us what the 24hour change has been, its color coded. The deeper the shade of blue, the bigger the difference. Take a look out here. If we put everybody else on this map, everybody did cool down today by a few degrees, but the swings have been more dramatic and noticeable out here and it all has to do how strong the surge in the marine layer has been. Theres a stronger surge coming back tomorrow, but much more on tuesday. First, the lows havent really budged at all. And daytime highs tomorrow, for the most part are going to be pretty similar to today. San jose will hit 83 today. Its a good representation for the south bay. Walnut creek goes to 83. Oaklands daytime high tomorrow is 71. San rafael, 77. Santa rosa 77. These are pretty nice numbers. So heres why were going to start to pull in a more impressive show from this marine layer. If you look at the clouds today, see how theres a little bit of a spin out here. Its really subtle. If we look at whats going o when you get a bulls eye here, that deepens the marine layer and it starts driving it on shore even more. This looks ahead into early in this week and thats going to be the set up for much of the early and middle part of this week. As it does that, we really see the marine layer get pushed back not only into the bay area, but this will be one of those scenarios where our marine layer actually goes all the way into the Central Valley and sacramento is going to wake up to it. It will be enough that we might be able to wring out a few showers along the coast this. Is not rain, it will be mist. You have to look up and see it with binoculars, telescopes, and if youre lucky, the naked eye. The marine layer is coming back in a big way. Things im sorry, bryan. Things are about to get greyer in the overnight hours, but it also means as the sun sinks slowly in the west this weekend, a faint little fuzz ball will be rising in the evening sky and anybody with a camera or scope will try to snap a shot. Its not easy to find comet neowise. In fact, once upon a time, just seeing a comet was terrifying. The ancients were terrified by the sight of these comets. Harbingers of war and plague and doom. A comet that has been spotted all the way from walnut creek to the space station. Comet neowise is making its first appearance in nearly 7,000 years. The question is can you see it . If youre in the northern hemisphere, you can see it. Youll be able to look up and see it with binoculars, telescopes and even the naked eye. Reporter its easier with a scope though and a dark clear sky. If you have both, youll see it. Heres how. Start looking about a halfhour after sunset. Youll look toward the northwestern sky. Use the big dipper as a guide. The stars in the handle of the big dipper kind of point to the general area where you can spot the comet. It wont look like this, it will look more like this. If you spot it, lucky you. Its quite rare that a comet will be bright enough. Its been quite a while and its exciting to be able to see this one in this way now. Reporter like all comets, neowise is half dust and half water. My quick calculation is its probably about 13 million olympic swimming pools worth of water. Reporter whoa. What if all those swimming pools hit earth . Not happening. This is 3 4 of an astronomical unit away from us right now. Its not coming near us. Youre not going to be able to see it anyway. If youre inland and persistent and have a pair of binoculars, right, bryan . It is hard to see with the naked eye. Binoculars are a must. Lets talk about why its going to be difficult over the next couple of nights. First of all, if we dont have any marine layer, and thats a hypothetical because were going to, heres where you look. Look off to the northwest part of the sky. Its going to be fairly close to the horizon. If you look directly at t you happen to know exactly where it is, youre less likely to be able to see if than if you look away from it because less light enters your retina directly when you look at something at a distance. The marine layer is Building Back in in a big way over the next few days. We kinda got a little break this weekend. It never went away. It kind of hugged the coast and stayed in the bay. But we got a break at least inland. Well, over the next couple of days, its really going to build in. Let me give you an idea of how this is going to come together. See how the clouds are spinning out there . Counterclockwise spin right there. That tells us theres an area of low pressure parked right off the coast. When you see a bulls eye like that, that area of low pressure helps to deepen the marine layer, strengthens it. Theres going to be an increased surge in the onshore flow. Not only does the entire bay area wake up to this by tuesday morning, but its going to hit sacramento. Heres another sign. It will be a deep enough marine layer that for likely tuesday morning, well even be able to wring a little bit of moisture out of it. Steady enough mist can add up over time and thats what well end up with on the coast. The other thing to talk about in our sky besides the marine layer, which can obscure youre view, theres smoke in the sky from a fire burning in the south. As you look off to the east, the clouds have obscured our view. When we had clearer skies, you could tell there was a bit of haze out there. That is the source of the smoke. Theres the mineral fire burning in fresno. Thats the smoke getting caught up in the bigger flow in the atmosphere. Im going to advance this into monday. Monday morning, its more of that onshore flow. That is also going to help clear out some of the smoke. So just be aware of this. If you happen to smell smoke, and monday morning would be the most likely time that could happen, that means youre breathing in more of that stuff than you want to. So maybe, you know, the advice i keep giving is skip the morning jog on monday if thats the case and your lungs will be glad that you did. Theres no change in the temperatures for the next 7 days. A new and young generation of protestors has emerged in the wake of a nationwide reckoning for social justice. Joe vazquez talked with the group from the bay area. We need more change. What are you doing . Reporter look closely into the crowds of the George Floyd Protests and you may notice what were seeing. The new generation is not only multiethnic, theyre also mostly young. We talked with one group of bay area activists. Its not an overnight fix. And thats what people need to understand. Reporter 4hd says theyre grateful for the thousands who have turned out to support their cause. People are realizing the police have been weaponnized against black men. Reporter during the pandemic, these young activists are carrying signs. Enduring teargas. And demanding long term action. Its been going on, but now that its on camera, its disgusting. Reporter several members of fhd were in the film the last black man in San Francisco. 4hd says the bay area needs to realize its reputation for inclusivity has not always included everyone. Its been hiding under the umbrella of the Lgbtq Community meaning when you look at that community, its a beautiful, embracing community, so people think when you come to San Francisco, everybodys going to be like that. The majority of the people do not treat you how they treat you if you go to the castro. Reporter 4hd has a plan which includes greater inclusion in tech, economic boosts for the black community, and a plan to bring black people back to the city. We need to talk about inclusion and economics and healthcare, gentification thats helping. So this is all Different Things that are starting to be show cased that need to happen for actual change to occur. Reporter joe vazquez, kpix 5.
