The sqf complex, but it started when our fires here locally in the bay area started with that Lightning Storm. It has been going since then, but today it took off. If you look at it, were going to talk about that plume of smoke in a second. If you got good eyes, you can see there is kind of a white dot that shows where the flames are emanating from, and that white dot is a telltale sign in addition to smoke this fire has developed another one of those pyro cumulus clouds. That word. Those are the clouds able to develop still high into the atmosphere they through smoke really high and can spread it really far. Its also not good news for that fire. For our immediate concerns, the way the atmosphere is looking right now, look at the direction for that plume of smoke. Is it possible to see exactly how this plays out, but if you just connect the dots on this, it doesnt look promising. There could be some good news on this tomorrow. If you look at the way the upper level winds removing those smoke plumes right now, we didnt talk about the creek fire, but this is a big concern here. Right now this plume of smoke is heading this way m iing to right now. Watch streamlines. They change as we get into sunday. Here is tomorrow at 2 00. This is a little after the 49ers are supposed to start their game. Now we reverse the flow a little bit. This will help for tomorrow. Its no guarantee, but its at least a good sign in the immediate concern. Air quality is showing red. All of these red dots show you whats unhealthy now. We did unhealthy today, were probably going to do it again tomorrow. There is reason to believe ive got even better news. Theres good news for tuesday and wednesday. A total n shift to really help with the smoke, and im going to enjoy showing that to you coming up in the complete forecast in a minute. The 24 hours we are facing are the important ones. I will see you in the next few minutes, guys. Its not just people and animals showing fx of the smoke and ash, wine country Grape Growers right now. The Wine Industry can be affected by this smoky bad air quality, but experts say its what you dont see the really harms the grapes the most. Thousands of acres of grapes in napa county, including this area right at the edge of the lnu fire. Of the acres he owns himself, at least half have been ruined by smoke ie got two more evng pick some re m y takemylo d go home reporter whether or not to harvest at all. Smoke damage called taint can affect the aroma and industry doesnt want to do anything to degrade the reputation for quality. We will not be making or much less releasing lines that have any type of impact from smoke, i can promise you that. The winds that are going to be released for 2020 should be fantastic, but will there be as much . That i dont know. Reporter the 2017 one country fires came after 90 of the crop was already harvested, but this time farmers are still a week away from picking, and now everyone has sent samples in for testing to be assigned a number indicating their levels of smoke exposure. Now the labs are overrun they have a steady backlog at this time, so now you need to pick a week from now but you can only get your number 30 days from now. Reporter but not all vineyards are affected. The smoke we see our fine particles of action which generally dont affect wine taste. It is the grapes that are closer to fires that can be tainted by the smell. So, he may forgo this years crop to protect the future. 2020 is still going to get tagged for being a difficult vintage to make winds that are smokefree. You cant wake make winds that have smoke in it. The urge to get out of the house superseded the urge for some. After a few days with a lot of businesses closed, people were back out today. The owner of main street kitchen said that while he was happy to see customers today, Outdoor Dining was still down sharply for saturday. This is one third of what we normally do. This is not so great. Its not the normal amount of people. A lot of people staying home. They postponed because of the bad error. No surprise, a lot of Outdoor Events canceled this week and because of bad air quality and a few people were out and about today, but the air quality was lousy enough for organizers to postpone a kite flying festival. San jose is closing a few parks because of the airquality including Japanese Friendship garden, guadalupe oak grove and the municipal rose garden. The locations will reopen as soon as things get better. Curbside and walkup Library Services are suspended through the weekend, and so are recreation programs at swim centers and skate park. One big event is still up in the smoky air. I cant imagine them even playing in this kind of air. Delete this is that in the regulatory response if its above a certain threshold for a prolonged period of time, then that is when the nfl and other member clubs we talk about other options. The 49ers are scheduled to play their opener, but the bad air could scrap that. It was so unhealthy yesterday that some players with pre existing conditions actually skipped out on practice. The nfl is closely monitoring our air quality. If it stays below 200 and the game goes on as planned, the 49ers are urging fans to do one thing. Lets not add stress to the already craziness that weve got with the pandemic. We would ask that you stay home and certainly support us if you can, but stay at home and watch on tv. Meanwhile, some bay area this ball fans are disappointed for another reason. For the second day in a row the giants game was suspended. Last nights game against the padres was also called off after someone in the giant traveling party tested positive for covid19. A few hours ago the giants released a statement saying quote a member of the organization has tested positive for covid19 and have instructed the teams players and staff to self isolate in their San Diego Hotel rooms with recommended safety precautions in place. Meanwhile in oakland, the unhealthy air force the postponement of a mess coronavirus but its been rescheduled for the weekend of september 26th and 27th. Stay with kpix 5, kpix. Com for continuing coverage of the smoky skies through the newscast and through the weekend. All of that smoke is actually helping firefighters battling the states deadliest fire of the year. Reduced sunlight is lowering temperatures and inhu where the complex is burning. The improved conditions come too late for at least nine people who died and hundreds more forced out of their homes. Its just hard not knowing. We have water on two sides which is maybe an advantage, maybe its not. Fire crews say there are too many hazards to allow residents back in, including down power lines, trees, and low visibility. Right now the fire is just over 20 contained. On board we are at least three fire engines work was all those trucks slowly being backed out onto the tarmac. 10 firefighters from the Forest Service also with the Cross Country flight. Theyre heading straight out to help battle the flames. My understanding is they are going to be deployed to one of the nearby fires here. This is on all hands on deck. Any help is greatly appreciated. I think its really special that they came completely from the east coast of the United States here in california. San Francisco Fire Department worked with fema to get extra resources out here. Speaking of heavy zone. It was no easy feat. Biologists tranquilized the bear with the plan didnt roll out the way they were hoping. The dog sustained a few minor burns but did make it out okay and deputies decided to give him a very fitting name. Trooper. Although i guess he already had a name. We will let that life or the moment and get onto the more important topic of air quality. Yes. Jinx. And weve got to talk about some serious items with this. The first thing i want to do as a refresher course with letters and numbers youre going to hear about in the next 24 hours. The nfl says there threshold for today is an aqi of 200. What does that mean . Aqi , airquality index. Its an arbitrary scale put together by the epa just so we can wrap our heads around where the airquality is, but you dont have to remember the numbers. If already been using this scale. It is colorcoded and you by now should know itis yellow to if its d its unhealthy and when you start to get into that pink its very unhealthy. We spent much of yesterday bay area white in the unhealthy category. Thankfully almost all are down here in the unhealthy range. And aqi of 200. If attack 200 theyre going to reassess and think about it. Now you know and aqi of 200 is telling you that airquality is in the unhealthy category. The next one up from that is hazardous. Even if you get down into the 100s, you are still in unhealthy air. The niners played at an aqi of 160 if they are out tomorrow, best not to follow their example. Dont have a scrimmage on the lawn after the game they are playing because its one thing to the nfl to do it. Doing anythitside riou to be r than u absolutely have to do and get back into cleaner air outside. This is what i showed at the top of the newscast. That is smoke coming off of something called the sqf complex fire. Nobody has been talking about it out here but its been burning since late august. Only about 12 containment in today it blew up and its really going. The troubling thing is the direction all that smoke is going. Cobb is going to be treated either winds in the last 24 hours. Theres relatively good news by tomorrow. The winds in the upper level should shift so it will be pulling it all that way. For the next 24 hours it will be. Thats new. Nobody saw it coming. Impossible to forecast 12 hours ago and that has to be factored thlotake in here. Hinking about we do our best job of updating you of this in real time when you were on the air. Chances are when you need to go outside in the middle of the day and we dont happen to be on the air, im going to show you some websites you can use coming up at the top of 6 30. Im going to show you the one which is the Gold Standard. Stick around 6 30. In the meantime, heres the good news. How do we break this pattern . If you put the water vapor on, now you see something that is a big counterclockwise spin. Thats an area of low pressure. It will change the whole atmosphere overhead. As this thing advances now we are on to tuesday. Now we are on to wednesday. A significant enough onshore flow that will break this up and it will start to move the air throughout the entire column of the atmosphere down at the ground and push it out of here. Whenever the smoke is doing on tuesday or wednesday, rest assured the bigger pattern in the atmosphere is finally going to be different than what we had in the last three weeks and it will be different in a much better way. Weve got a very difficult 24 hours to get through. Overnight lows go into the mid 50s. Daytime highs remember if we pull in upperlevel smoke from the complex putting all that smoke our way, these numbers can vary wildly because it depends on how much sunlight is getting through. As far as the 70 forecast, upper 80s all the way through unless you are in the bay, then its mid70s. More in the next half hour. For now, vern, over to you ahead the as yell man down. U. S. There are plenty of online resources to help you pinpoint the airquality reports in your neighborhood. As you probably noticed the different websites can give very different readings. Darren, how do you know which site to trust . We are going to look at the two most commonly used ones and im going to point out the Gold Standard first of all, has any better ever heard the word purple area . Ive been using it a lot vern says he uses it anytime before he takes his kid out to us when meat. Its a good website, but it has some drawbacks, and this is not the primary one im going to send you to, but since its a big one, take a look at that full screen. I want you to get oriented because it can be confusing why it is always seemingly reading worse. If you take a look at all the colors on here, is lots of reds and deep reds on here. What you have to do if you are going to use purple air is come over here to the left and there are different settings you can use. If you put it on none, you are going to get the readings that read the 2. 5 reading. Coming from all sources. In other words, purple layer often times will over read and give you a worse reading than it actually is because it is counting all of the p. M. 25 and not just the smoke. Theres a county of an organ called lane county and they worked with purple air to adjust their settings. The readings will come down. It doesnt look all that bad if youre going to use purple air, that is the setting youre going to use right now. Really the one you want to use is the one coming from the epa. And its going to look like this. We put a link to this website and if you go to our page its going to be the first thing you see on there. We are making things real easy. A map is going to come up. It will look more like a national orientation. When you get to this page youre going to have to zoom in on all the bright colors and when you get to the bay area re goingto a buof sensors. It sho you read what ive been telling you this newscast, read we learned is unhealthy air. With this one when you look at the sensors, ideally you want to look for the round dots, and its small on your screen. Around dots are the official of the official, and when you click on the round. You actually get a historical record over the last four days and it shows you how the airquality has changed so you know where its been. Even if it doesnt give you a forecast is telling you what its done right now. This is important because we can update you on this and we do every time we are on the air live. For the next 24 hours its important that you check this before you go outside because this is some of the worst air quality in the nation and in ththe homege. T now. Uptotheminute. Darren, thank you. Rangers will reassess in the spring. Every some good news, i can tell you this. I really hate to have to talk about this. Let me show you whats coming our way. You cant miss it. There is a huge plume of smoke rising off of the southern sierra. Ive got it labeled on there. You can see on the yellow label it is called the sqf. You have probably never heard of this one. It has been burned august 23rd and started when all the rest of the fires in the bay area started in that Lightning Storm that moved across the sea air and started that fire, but to take it took off. If you look at the blue smoke coming from it, just connect the dots. Not what we wanted to see. Theres a couple of other things on here i want to point out what the source of the fire right there. A different color near the source. A white. Showing you that is a pirate people was loud. You have only gone familiar wit actually starts to develop a thunderstorm over it. The air is rising so fast and furious because the heat is so intense that the cloud can build as high as 30,000 feet those fires can wreak havoc on fires beneath them, but its also bad news for the rest of california because that means the fire has the ability to spread the smoke. Its going to start throwing it all around. By the way, the satellite looks weird because this is updating dark. I wont be able to use this again later tonight, weve been using it since 5 00 and its been incredible. The streamline shows you exactly what we just saw. Heres some moderate good news. Im going to play this forward right now and get us into tomorrow and watch the direction change. By the time we get to tomorrow we pulled in and onshore flow. We also redirected the flow of the valley away from us. Whatever that fire is doing tomorrow, we will not be importing the worst of it. It still got to go somewhere. It was the good news is for us at home is that we cannot get steered away from us as we get into the afternoon how much do we impart from now and then and settle down on the ground we all live . Is all difficult questions to answer. We have already got enough smoke here. We are registering unhealthy consistently across the entire bay area. Unhealthy and these last two days have been the worst of this entire threeweek smoke storm. You are breathing the worst air of the whole time. , but you need to compound it with stuff youve already been living in. If we look ahead, i do have some good news, so hang in here see atitisst for wednesday thincae the area of low entire atmosphere. Im playing this one forward now and as we get into tuesday and wednesday, it comes onshore which means its going to start pulling air onshore with it this is a power force in the atmosphere to clear air at the ground and up above. Give this tuesday or wednesday before we start to see the impact. At least take some solace in knowing no matter what the fires are doing by the time we get to wednesday and thursday, thats going to help clear out our air. Doesnt mean were going to go to good, but we are going to get away hopefully from healthy. Its a brandnew science. Anyway, overnight lows, of course that is entirely dependent on how chsmoke is shading us. A abe oke d will be keeping ust friendo yb. I just wish we had been more careful.
