Reporter the procession began less than an hour ago. We are hearing that it is close to the medical Examiners Office now. A ladder truck with colleagues and fellow firefighters paying tribute, making it way through the city. He was a beloved father of two Young Children and also the son of a San Francisco firefighter veteran. Cortez joined the force in 2007 and served at station three in the tenderloin as a firefighter and paramedic. The exact details are unclear at this hour, but they confirm it happened around 10 00 a. M. At the Mission District training facility. He was immediately given life support, medical attention. Then brought to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and died just before 11 00 this morning. We are trying to make sure that his family is the number one priority and that they are given all the time necessary to mourn this, along with all of his brothers and sisters at the San Francisco fire department. Reporter San Francisco fire department, not saying much about this investigation, since it is in the early stages, but we have heard from cal osha, an outside source telling that agency that someone tell from three stories up and suffered massive head injuries this morning during an accident. Fire Officials Say they will hold another News Conference shortly after that procession ends this evening. This event today, honoring cortez, one of many events that will happen this week. Such a tightknit family. A tragic loss. Kenny choi, thanks. The other big story this evening, campaign 2020. A live look at the debate stage at the university of utah in salt lake city. A short time ago, mike pence and Kamala Harris did their final walkthroughs ahead of tonights 90 minute debate. To keep candidates safe, they will be separated by these plexiglass barriers. Those barriers were a big point of contention for the pens team, which finally conceded to allowing them last night. Candidates will be seated at least 12 feet apart and any guest who refuses to wear a mask will be removed from the auditorium. Wilson walker joins us now to set the stage for tonights big debate. Wilson. Reporter when joe biden picked Kamala Harris as his running mate, a lot of people immediately thought ahead to the debate we are about to see. The Kamala Harris resume comes with no shortage of debate experience, from her time at San FranciscoDistrict Attorney to her run for California Attorney general. It is in my best interest that they respect your rights, that they know how to gather evidence, instead of gathering lawsuits. Reporter but that was the last time she was on stage alone with a republican. Since then, she has largely been debating her own party. Lets stop with the political attack stuff. Reporter as for the incumbent i will give you an opportunity. I will take them one at a time. Reporter mike pence is widely thought to have won his first Vice President ial debate. He was an attorney and a radio talkshow host, before he ever won an election. Even his 2016 challenger, tim kaine, admits that mike pence knows how to deliver a line. There is a reason why people question the trustworthiness of Hillary Clinton and that is because they are paying attention. Will you shut up, man . Reporter in all likelihood, fewer interruptions and less unchained than last week, but this is a heavyweight white. A senator who knows how to ask a tough question and a Vice President that knows how to field it. He never said that. That is simply not true. Reporter a different kind of debate tonight. Two very different kinds of people, with incredibly high stakes. Live in San Francisco, wilson walker. Political analyst melissa caen joining us now to talk about what to expect from tonights debate. Melissa, for Kamala Harris, how much will she rely on her skills as a prosecutor and what exactly does she have to focus on . Reporter Kamala Harris hasnt prosecuted the case in about 20 years, but she still has an important skill that you learn as a prosecutor and that is the ability to listen. That is what makes her so effective when she is questioning people in the senate, for example. She is listening to the answers and really delivering it right back to them and that is very effective. It is actually hard to do under pressure, so tonight youll see her tying pence to donald trump as tightly as possible and not letting there be daylight between them. Really holding pence accountable for every transgression that she believes, and democrats believe, that the president has committed. So she is fast on her feet. For Vice President pence, how aggressive can he be against Kamala Harris without the appearance that he is overreaching, if he is verbally attacking her . Reporter thats always something to consider. Joe bidens debate against sarah palin many years ago as a real case study in how to both be an effective debater, but not cross the line and be too aggressive. Having said that, Vice President pence is not an aggressive person, thats really not his persona, so it is unlikely that we will see him yelling or losing his temper with senator harris. I think we will actually hear a lot more substance tonight, because these are not two candidates who are necessarily geared to talk over each other. I think we might actually see to far more polite vp candidates than we saw from the president ial candidates. I think pence has called himself Rush Limbaugh on decaf. Okay, President Trump, joe biden, obviously in their 70s and the president treated for covid. Bidens health has been an issue, too. How much pressure do those things put on this Vice President ial showcase tonight . Reporter what is really uncomfortable to say when you are looking at two people who are running to be the leader of the free world, as it were, that we are really concerned you all are going to die in office. Its not exactly politics, but it is true. While Vice President ial debates dont usually do much to advance or detract from the president ial race, this year, all eyes are really on these guys and it will be really important how either of them performs tonight in a way that you really havent seen in modern history. Less than an hour away. Melissa caen as always, a pleasure to talk to you. Thanks so much. We have a special schedule tonight for the debate. Cbs evening news coming up next at 5 30, followed by that debate at 6 00. We will stream kpix news at 6 00 on cbsn bay area and have a special newscast at 10 00, followed by the news that 11 00. Reporter uc berkeley is so used to having Nobel Prize Winners that they actually have parking space reserved for nobel laureates. Reporter she and french scientist Emmanuelle Charpentier are the first all woman team to win the nobel prize for chemistry. I would say, i am proud of my gender. After that they can sometimes insert the correct version the properly again. The innovation could aid in everything from plant breeding to one day ridding the human world of genetic disease. Jennifer remembers the moment she and her lab associate realized that they had discovered. Looking at his data and looking at each other and saying wow, if this works, if this really can be deployed widely as a gene editor, this will be incredible. Reporter but there are also fears the technique will be abused to create genetically engineered designer babies, something that is already happening in china. Two hours ago, all evacuation uwarnings in the city of calistoga were lifted. The glass fire is now 58 contained. Flames have burned more than 67,000 acres. Containment is good and cooler temperatures are even better, too. It helps with the containment ever, because the higher the relative humidity, that helps. They would like some rain. We have been talking about this parade of storm systems that would change our weather and increase rain chances by the end of the week. It sent some clowns towards us yesterday and cooler temperatures today. The next one is trending farther south and that path means it is not going to be able to steal any of the moisture from the Pacific Northwest and drag it farther to the bay area. Northern california might still get rain, but lower rain chances for the bay area friday and saturday. They dont drop to zero, but they have dropped to about 20 for friday and saturday. Not looking like this will be much of an event at all. It doesnt mean it will be completely dry. We could pick up drizzle along the coast and brief showers on saturday morning, but forecast models have really backed off in terms of how much moisture they are anticipating. We will take whatever we can get, especially in the vicinity of the glass fire, but the chance of showers we were talking about earlier this week has been decreasing. Cooler temperatures stick around. The air quality is going to improve, because the onshore breeze, with us today it is just at ground level. Further up in the atmosphere, the wind is out of the south and southeast. That will change tomorrow. There is an onshore breeze kicking in. 15 to 20 mileperhour wind by midday with strong gusts in the afternoon. Not overly windy, but as the onshore breeze kicks in, it will help push some of the smoke further away from the bay area. Air quality today still wasnt great and it wont be wonderful tomorrow, but at least a step up in terms of the quality of the atmosphere. The amount of smoke in the air will decrease as we get to the rest of the work week. Most of the area should have good air quality by the time we get to saturday and sunday. Right now it is a mix of haze and fog as we look over the bay bridge. 60 degrees downtown. A cool day by the water and cooler inland. Temperatures close to 15 degrees cooler than they were 24 hours ago, with one spot on the map short of 80 degrees. 79 in concord and tomorrow will be cooler, because the fog will spread pretty far inland tomorrow morning and its not just the fog and low cloud cover. We see clouds farther up in the atmosphere, so in general we are talking about mostly gray skies. More clouds than sunshine and that will limit how much we warm up. We start off where we have the past couple of mornings. Mostly in the 50s, with some 40s in the valleys of the north bay. High temperatures tomorrow, 5 to 10 degrees below average. Only upper 50s along the coast. 60s around the bay, with 70s further inland. Even the warm spots on the map, only in the mid70s for high temperatures. Comfortable autumn weather, more of what we expect in october. The comfortable error sticks around in the weekend. We warm up a little bit on sunday. The not so good news is that the thermometer will be climbing again as we head into tuesday and wednesday. Back to the upper half of the 80s and even mid70s around the bay.
