You can trust the post office to deliver your mail in ballot on time . We put the process to the test. Thats coming up and streaming on cbsn bay area. Im tracking critical fire weather continues off shore winds, have returned to the bay area, especially up in the Higher Elevations with a red flag warning in effect for the north bay mountains. With he will talk about the fire weather watch and what you can expect as we go through the week coming up. And a closer look at traffic along 101. First reports of a crash and foggy conditions on the Golden Gate Bridge. Lets look this morning. This is from the rooftop camera. Campaign 2020. We have exactly two weeks until election day. You may be thinking can you trust the United States post office to deliver your mail in ballot on time . Kenny has the results of a kpix5 survey in this original report. The United States post office prides itself on on time delivery. With just weeks to go before election day and with more people than ever voting by mail, we decided to put the bay areas mail service to the test. Every day 15 to 20 million pieces of bay area mail arrive at one of three facilities like this one in San Francisco. Where they are sorted, post marked and sent off to their final destinations. First class mail is supposed to arrive locally in one to three day but some are skeptical. Its not coming in. Its not going out. Nancy brown lives in campbell thats had terrible issues with mail delivery this year. Its something to be concerned about. Especially with the election. Its a question on a lot of peoples minds. We did a test. Mail in ballots go first class, they also get special priority. We couldnt repeat that but we did our best. We picked envelopes about the same size as a ballot, stuffed them to make them about the same weight and put first class stamp on them. To compare how different bay area regions preformed be divided them into four packs of 25 each and addressed them to four different po boxes in santa clara, alameda and San Francisco county. Then we broke up into four teams and hit the road. Droppingthem off at 100 mailboxes, post offices and even the mailman. In 24 city across the four counties, four Business Days later, we came back to check. First stop our po box in walnut creek where we counted and recounted. Here in walnut creek only 22 out of the 25 arrived. All our mock ballot as lifed in four days in both santa clara and alameda and the last three ballots came in on day six. As for San Francisco, we are still waiting on two to arrive. The two fake ballots you sent never show up. Its a concern. Jonathan stein with a watch dog group said this election for the first time you can track the ballot and get a new one if it gets lost. Another big change, as long as your mail in ballot is post marked by election day, it has 17 days to quiet to the Registrars Office instead of the traditional three. Even late ballots still have more than enough time to get to the Election Office and be counted. What if the ballot is post marked the day after election day . An analysis of vote by mail ballots in several counties found that on average 1. 7 get rejected. Problem was signatures are partly to blame but the top reason, they arrive too late, mostly because they are post marked too late. I dont think thats voters. I think its voter who are putting their vote by mail ballots in a blue box after the last pick up on election day. Not realizing that itll be post marked the next dame. Thats a critical point. People have to know the pick up times. John is director of elections for San Francisco. He said if you waited until election day to send in your mail in ballot dont put it in the mailbox, instead drop it off in person. We have two stations on either end of the voting center. Also more drop off sites starting the weekend before election day. Then we have 588 millioning places in San Francisco. As for our missing two San Francisco mock ballots. Its not the same as mailing a bat. Theres no po box, no Branch Office and for this election the post office is focused on getting ballots to voters and to the elections group. Nancy is regaining some of her confidence since all three ballots we mailed from her hometown arrived in four days. Im hopeful. Im definitely very hopeful that maybe they are getting it corrected and we will see a difference here. She said she still is going to play it safe. I will hand describe mine myself. This is a relevanty big year and its really important to get your vote out there and make sure it counts. In the Postal Services latest survey 81 of National First class mail arrived with in three to five days. We did better than that with 95 of our mock ballots coming in on time. Keep in mind the post office has beefed up its service for the election to prepare for a high number of mail in ballots. In San Francisco. Kpix5.
