President elect joe biden and Vice President elect Kamala Harris are due to get a National Security briefing today. Now this is not the president ial daily briefing. They are being denied that brus becau because President Trump has still not conceded. Mr. Biden warns the administrations lack of cooperation could hurt the entire nation. More people may die if we dont coordinate. Reporter president elect joe biden predicted grave consequences if the Trump Administration keeps stonewalling his team on the coronavirus pandemic. If we have to wait until january 20th to start that planning, it puts us behind over a month, month and a half. Reporter the president elect and Vice President elect laid out their plans to boost the u. S. Economy but said controlling the virus is the first step to recovery. Once we shut down the virus and deliver Economic Relief to workers and businesses, then we can start to build back better than before. Reporter mr. And secondly, its important that people who are in the greatest need get it. I couldnt hesitate to get the vaccine. Reporter while President Trump refuses to concede, his National Security adviser Robert Obrien became the latest highranking Administration Official to acknowledge mr. Biden will likely be president. If the biden harris ticket is determined to be the winner, and, obviously, things look that way now, well have a very professional transition. Reporter on a call with governors, Vice President mike pence made no mention of any transition. Despite there being no evidence of widespread voter fraud, the Trump Campaign and Republican Voters have filed more than a dozen lawsuits to stop the certification of the results. Cbs news has learned louisiana congressman Cedric Richmond and Biden Campaign manager Jen Omalley Dillon have been offered positions in the new administration. Both were trusted campaign advisers. So this starts to give you a sense of who the president elect wants around him in the white house. Anthony . Nikole, thank you. This is a critical moment with the vaccine accelerating sorry, with the coronavirus accelerating. We really need to get a handle on it. Not only that, anthony. She said to be honest, none of this was easy. Donald trump spread racist lies about her husband that put her family in danger. And she said that was something i was ready that i felt strongly about, but for the sake of the country, because she said i welcome Melania Trump when they came to the white house that day for the transition, for the sake of the country, she had to set her anger aside and find strength and maturity to, you know, to move on. I think that sends such a powerful message. They were there on Inauguration Day for donald trump. Hard to imagine they same happening at the current juncture. She feels her family was put in danger. She knows what shes talking about. President trump has just nine weeks left in his term. During that time, hes expected to sharply cut u. S. Troop strength in afghanistan and iraq. Weijia jiang is at the white house. What does that plan call for exactly . Well, good morning, anthony. This move does not meet the president s goal of bringing back all u. S. Troops in afghanistan by christmas, but it does put him closer to fulfilling a Campaign Promise of ending american involvement in conflicts abroad. Cbs news has learned that the pentagon expects the president to order a withdrawal of about 2,000 American Forces in afghanistan and 500 in iraq by midjanuary. That would leave about 2,500 u. S. Troops in each country. Acting defense secretary Christopher Miller said in a message to employees last night that he wants to bring the current war to an end in a responsible manner. The keyword there is responsible and the president is already getting pushback from his own party, including Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell who said a rapid withdrawal would hurt our allies and delight the people who wish us harm. Military officials worry leaving too few troops in afghanistan could lead to more violence in the region, but they say it is better than having no troops there at all. Tony . Weijia, thank you. Hes since been charged with felony evading in a motorcycle, resisting arrest and detention and possession of marijuana. I was really scared, fearing for my life. People will watch that video and say, why did you run . When i hopped out of the car, i automatically saw their weapons on me, so i i just went into where somewhere i would feel safe, and the inside of my house was the safest place i could think of. Reporter in a statement to cbs news, the Schertz PoliceDepartment Said an investigation is under way and if any policy infractions are discovered, staff will be held accountable and appropriate actions will be taken. The family Attorney Daryl Washington says the officers should be suspended without pay. When an officer violates someones civil rights, when you see them commit a wrong like these officers did, i think the penalty needs to be just a little harsher. Otherwise, you have nothing thats going to stop officers from doing this in the future. Reporter mireya villareal, cbs news, dallas. Oh, my gosh. Thats hard to watch. Its very hard to watch. I mean, theres so many layers of wrong there. I get it. The police are saying, we tried to stop him. He kept going. Hes home. Hes in his neighborhood. He says let me get home. People have to understand how afraid black people are of Police Officers in this time. You just have to understand that. So when he gets to his house, he gets out. His arms are up. He tells them to get down. Again, he doesnt get down. He says i just have to get inside the house. But when the cops can see that hes not armed, hes calling for his dad. Clearly hes a young person, and the female officer who is kicking him just adds theres just so much wrong about this. The police the incident starts with supposedly him running a red light and thats wrong. And driving, according to their description, about a mile to his home with their red lights flashing behind him and he didnt pull over. Thats what starts this. How it ends is another matter. Race is a factor here. Hes also just a teenager. Youre 17 when the police are after you. You feel scared and want to get home, particularly if youre that close to home. The other thing is and people dont want to hear this or believe this. White kids are given the benefit of the doubt. I had the same thing happen to me. I ran a light. Trying to get home. Welcome back to cbs this morning. Georgias secretary of state says fellow republicans are pushing him to exclude legally cast votes and that he and his wife are getting Death Threats over it. Brad raffensperger told the post that gop senator Lindsey Graham asked him if political bias could have led poll workers to accept absentee ballots with signatures that dont match. He suggested raffensperger find a way to throw out legal ballots. He calls this ridiculous. They project that president elect biden is the winner in georgia where he leads by 14,000 votes. Georgia secretary of state Brad Raffensperger joins us now. I want to begin with the Lindsey Graham back and forth. We have been following on this show efforts to challenge votes in a variety of states. Mostly thats been lawsuits so far, but now youre saying that trump ally Lindsey Graham pressured you in a phone call to potentially throw out legally cast ballots. He says thats ridiculous. Why do you believe thats what his intent was . Well, when senator graham called, i just assumed that he was calling about the two runoffs for the senators so i called him back. Ad then during our discussion he asked if ballots could be matched back to the envelope, the absentee ballots could be matched back to the envelope. I explained our process after it went through two sets of signature match, at that point they were separated but then senator graham implied for us to audit the envelopes and then throw out the ballots for counties that had the highest frequency error of signatures and that i tried to, you know, help explain that thats because we did signature match, you couldnt tie the signatures back anymore to those ballots just like with if he voted in person, my name is not on my ballot and so it cant be tied back to me. Its something thats been around for over 100 years, the secret ballot. This is a serious accusation. He said you had a nice conversation. Said if you have a problem on it, thats on you. Was there a moment in the call where you said, im sorry, mr. Senator, what youre asking me to do is not up to me, not right morally, legally or otherwise . I really just got off the call and said i would circle back. I talked to counsel and i would get back to him. Just decided the best action was not to get back and reengage. I thought we were going to be he was probably asking whats the status of the senator races, the runoffs. When i went down this other path, i think the best thing was to disengage and move forward. Thats what were doing right now. Were doing 100 recounting of the votes as part of our audit. We received a lawsuit from attorney lynwood. We will fight that. We want to make sure every vote counts. I want to talk to you about your life off of that call. Its been difficult as i understand it. You and your wife have received Death Threats. This after you were in fact endorsed by President Trump. Now republicans are piling on. One of those threats said you better not botch this recount. Your life depends on it. Thats pretty clear. Who do you blame for those Text Messages . Do you put some blame on the president and his allies who have called your work into question . I think its everyone thats been spinning people up and understand we have a lawful process in georgia. Im a conservative republican, always have been. A lot of these people spinning up the crowd used to be democrats. Ive always been a conservative republican. I want to make sure we have a lawful process. I think integrity matters. We understand we came through a tough election in 2018. Stacy abrams lost and she never went away. She never admitted she was beaten. I think making sure we have Election Integrity is important. Its making sure we finish the drill, make sure we count all legal votes. At the end of the day, thats what this audit is going to do. Were going to count every single paper ballot and those will be the results. Thats what the state will certify. You have to go on living in that state, you and your wife, long after this election is over. Are you concerned that if the president and his allies dont tone down their rhetoric or elevate their speech, as you put it, you could have trouble . I think right now people have really inflamed emotions and i get that. I think when people really come to accepting the hard fact, this is what the results are, i as a republican, i wish the results would go another way but i think at the end of the day what youre going to see is this audit would verify what the machines counted and then well certify it. The losing candidate, if theyre within half percent, which either one would be, they can ask for a full recount. Then well scan those ballots through again. That is their right. Well follow state law. We should note, signatures were verified, no problem with the voting machines. 2500 ballots were on a memory stick. You are a man who follows the law and has integrity in the process. Secretary raffensperger, thank you for joining us. We appreciate it. Thank you. A former Louisiana StateUniversity Student says the school ignored her claims of Sexual Misconduct by a star Football Player when she reported it back in 2016. She is one of several women who told usa today their accusations were never followed up on as required by law. A new usa today article paints a disturbing picture of lsus Athletic Department and a systemic culture of turning a blind eye towards athletes accused of Sexual Misconduct or dating violence. National correspondent gentleman reek ka duncan spoke to that student. What did she tell you . Reporter she said she first reached out to the usa today after it published an article about allegations of rape against darreus geist. He took a nude photo of her without her consent that later was passed around to the football team. She told me the 2016 incident prompted her to drop out of lsu. I couldnt handle 100,000 fans cheering on his name knowing what he was what he is, what hes done. Reporter thats Samantha Brennan describing the weight of her thoughts. Takes it to the house. Reporter after an encounter with then lsu running back darreus geist in 2016. She was working part time in the Football Recruiting office when she met geist at a bar in kansas. I still have all of my Text Messages and the i was going through it. What happened last night . Dont remember anything. The next morning brennan said she woke up naked and alone in her bed. Geist texted her asking if she had her wallet which she found in her couch cushions. She doesnt remember giving him permission to come over. Days later brennan was told by a co worker a nude photo of her had been shared with members of the lsu football team. According to brennan it showed her walking into her bathroom shirtless facing away from the camera. The worst part is looking around, walking down the hallways, wondering have you seen it, have you seen it . Members of the lsu Athletic Department helped her file a report with campus police. Lsu policy states that campus officials were required to report that allegation for an official investigation, but brennan says no official ever followed up and she did not want to press charges. I think when you see it all spelled out like this, it shows just how how widespread a problem this is. Reporter a usa today report out monday says brennan was not alone in her experience at lsu. They found at least nine Football Players were reported for Sexual Misconduct or violence. In some cases no disciplinary action was taken. In almost every case lsu allegedly failed to follow up, ignoring School Policies and even federal law. Nancy armor cowrote the report. What our reporting found is this is a systemic problem at lsu. The men found culpable for violations of Sexual Misconduct or dating violence were allowed to stay on campus. I have in the past and will continue to take appropriate action. Reporter ed orgeron addressed the allegations. Lsu does not tolerate Sexual Assault or any form of abuse and the university is committed to responding promptly to any reports of misconduct to investigating these reports in a manner that is fair and equitable and to supporting the victims in every way we can. If you look at either lsus statements or coach ogerons statements, there were no denials in there. They didnt refute what we had found. Reporter cbs news reached out to geists legal team and got no response. They previously denied the rape charges to usa today. They did not make officials available but in a message interim president said the school has retained lawyers to conduct an independent review of its title 9 procedures. Gayle . He sold them after acquiring them in a controversial deal. He talked about the sale with tracy smith on cbs sunday morning last year. You didnt see it coming . No. So how did you find out . She only found out when the buyer, shamrock holdings, reached out to her. She says she will not work with that company because the deal to buy masters allows braun to keep making money off her work. She has started rerecording her old albums. A process that is exciting and fulfilling. She hasnt released these rerecordings. That will be a big deal. Shes rerecording her first five albums which she can do. She owns the rights to them and she can sell them as opposed to the other recordings that she made. Its about ownership. Yeah. And controlling the sale. Im very sorry its come to this. Im sure scooter has a very different version of what happened here. He has another side. In this mornings eye on money key financial and tax savings moves to consider with just 44 days left in 2020. The pandemic has devastated the economy, of course, and parts of the c. A. R. E. S. Act which provided Financial Relief will expire on december 31st. Some of those emergency measures including stimulus payments and extended Unemployment Benefits could add to confusion in the upcoming tax season. Cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger joins us now with what you need to know. Jill, good morning. You say i need to be thinking about tax season now. Why . Well, always said with 44 days left there arent that many things you can do after the year passes, so the most important thing to remember is part of the c. A. R. E. S. Act is really causing people to worry. Your economic stimulus checks, they are not taxable. So you dont need to really fret about that. However, millions of americans received some form of unemployment throughout 2020, whether its a federal or a state program. That is taxable. And a wide majority of people did not withhold taxes based on that so heres what you need to do. But to the irs website, irs. Gov, go to the withholding estimator. See if you can change your estimates or potentially make a payment so you have no penalty or surprises in april, again, really important for everyone especially for those who received Unemployment Benefits and did not withhold. Americans worked from home and are there tax considerations if you worked in a different state . Yeah, this is a very strange quirk of this particular recession because so many people did go out of state. A lot of younger adults went back with their families this. Could be a benefit but it could be a problem as well. So what you need to do is compile the number of days throughout the year that you worked at your primary location. Then the days that you worked elsewhere. Now this could include not just a different state, it might be a different jurisdiction. You might live in new york city as your primary and moved upstate and dont have to pay new York City Tax potentially so compile those days then you check with your location where your primary residence is, see what the rules are and then you may want to adjust your withholding accordingly. But, again, a little bit of homework for you. It could pay off. Jill, how do you know what youre table to deduct for a home office when so many were working from home . This may have been the number one question i received on my podcast, like cant wait till i get to april so i can deduct everything that ive done. Not so fast. Heres why. When we had a tax cut in 2017, that basically erased the ability for an employee to deduct the Home Office Expense or any miscellaneous business expenses. Now that said if youre selfemployed, if youre a gig worker you may be able to deduct your rent or your mortgage, your property taxes, you really have to make sure you comply with the irs rules and has to be regular use of your location or partial location and, of course, you cannot be a pig, dont say everything is for work. Check with your irs rules, please, because it is an audit flag. Yeah, thats an audit trigger. My accountant always told me. Jill, thank you very much. Appreciate it. Sure. Ahead first on cbs this morning, formula 1s only black driver and seventime World Champion, Lewis Hamilton, hell join us to share how hes bringing more diversity to the sport. Lewis hamilton wins the turkish grand prix and is a seven time champion of the world i got goose bumps. You heard it. Seven time champion of the world. Thats british formula one driver Lewis Hamilton who clinched an historic win on sunday in istanbul with 94 career wins. He has the most of any driver in the history of the racing series. Whoa. The only black driver in formula one. He has taken a knee and stood up for racial equality. Well have it on say it again first. There he is. Discuss his victory in the fight for change. We welcome you, Lewis Hamilton. I dont know if you can see me. Im wearing the mercedes blue. I am so excited. I was cheering you on sunday on the upper west side. I dont know if you could hear me applauding. You started in sixth position, very unusual for you. You started in sixth position and ended up winning the race. Take us there, lewis. It was a crazy weekend and firstly, thank you so much for having me. And, you know, youve been so supportive all of these years. Its a shame you cant go. I know. Sunday was hectic. You know, it was the trickiest conditions. It was raining. You like the rain though, lewis. Lewis, you like the rain. I do. I do. We started sixth. Honestly, i just wanted to go out and have fun. I had no idea what would happen but of course i always have that belief that i can make it to the front. All of the obstacles came and i did 50 laps on one set of tires which has not been done. Very unusual. You told the team to ignore you telling you to come in and take the tires. Lap 37 out of 58 you took the lead. When you pulled in and won, normally you hop out of your car, greet your team, greet your crew. You sat in your car. It was clearly a very emotional moment for you. What were you thinking at that moment . Honestly, i you know, ive been racing for 27 years and its always been a dream to be not only in formula one but to i watched Michael Schumacher win those seven world titles and it was such a farfetched dream but i kept believing i could potentially get there. You had the highs and the lows. I think as i came across the line the buildup of the last lap, the fact that it was right in front of me, i just got to stay on the track, dont make mistakes, keep believing in yourself. I did all the way. I burst out in tears as i came across the line. I just count get out of the car because i just couldnt believe it. Yeah. Were you thinking about your dad, too . Yeah. Just thinking about a lot of my life kind of flashed before my eyes. Particularly just knowing that my dad worked so hard, you know, at one stage, you know, having four jobs and just having such belief. I finally accomplished what we set out to do and hopefully he feels that it was worth the hard work. 14 years ago you started as the only black race car driver in formula one. 14 years later you are still the only black race car driver in formula one. You write this, saying being the first black anything is a proud and lonely walk. Help us understand what its been like for you. Yeah, well, we started out, as i said, back in 1992 or 1993 and we were the only black family. I thought me being there would break down barriers, open up doors and encourage it to be a more diverse sport, but i realized last year after 14 years that that has barely shifted. And so now youre speaking out about this, lewis, youre speaking out. Yeah. It was difficult. I tried to speak about it in the past but it was always there was always a bit of push back and it wasnt the easiest thing to speak about. Particularly this year with the black lives matter movement, theres been an awakening and an opportunity to use your voice. I felt a necessity to my niece and nephew who are biracial kids and the minorities who dont feel like they have a voice. I have to use this platform to help encourage. No ones doing their homework to find out why our sport is not diverse. I put together a commission to find out what the barriers are and find a fundamental find a real platform to be able to open up the doors and for black kids to get into s. T. E. M. And engineering. Youve challenged mercedes. Youve asked them tough questions. Your contract is up. Contract negotiations are underway. I love toto wolf, too. Should tow tto back up the truc. There are rumors youre thinking about walking away. Ten seconds, lewis. I love doing what im doing. Winning the seventh world title is an i we have the power to harness californias Abundant Solar and wind energy, but its not available all day long. Use less energy from 4 to 9 pm for a cleaner california. Welcome back to cbs this morning. Its that time again. Time to bring you some of the stories that are the talk of the table this morning. Tony starts it off. All right. I would like everyone at home to imagine you are a billionaire living in laguna beach. Im in. Youre living in laguna beach. Is it a big house . Lovely home. Okay, good. The neighbors also have a lovely home. Of course netting up. The neighbors say that your netting is blocking their ocean view. They file a complaint, then a lawsuit. You have counter complaints and counter lawsuits. This is getting expensive. In the middle of the night when the lawsuits and complaints arent having their effect you decide to play this song the ship sunk ground and charted desert island. Gilligans island. A bond giant pacific investor is accused of playing that song to annoy him in a complaint. The neighbor says gross began dancing on his balcony facing our property and making gestures. He played this song all night long. Yes. So clearly there are denials and counter claims on both sides and it will be all sorted out in court, but i just thought that was an interesting attempt at conflict resolution or escalation depending on your point of view. I think its fun when rich people fight. Playing gilligans island. When he wants to amp it up even higher hell play the Addams Family theme song. Thats funny. Hopefully theyll work it out. Beautiful houses both of you. Weve been telling you how President Trump is not conceding this election. Jimmy fallon pieced together a confession speech and showed it during his tonight show monolog last night. My fellow americans, a short time ago joe biden beat me in the election not only did he win, he won by a lot, therefore, it is time for me to step aside because lets face it i wasnt probably on my game and i wasnt doing so well. Im the only president in history to lose the popular vote twice and to get impeached, therefore, i humbly concede to joe biden. The American People have responded and they said to me, youre fired. Get out. The art of editing. I thought it is clearly very edited. That didnt happen. I was playing it in the makeup room. When did he do that . No, this is a jimmy fallon joke. It was so well done. There is a lot we can joke about. It isnt funny. The Trump Campaign has not reached out to the Biden Campaign. White house and federal agencies havent briefed team biden. First lady Melania Trump has not invited joe biden to the white house. I dont think shes forgiven donald trump for putting her family in jeopardy. I invited melania and answered any questions she had. This is a process weve followed for a gazillion years. Jimmy, very creative. There is ush a parotocol. Yes. That may turn out to be the only concession you see. My pick is about Award Winning actor and writer rachel bloom. But now theres no need for regret because im about to get a diagnosis bloom shod to fame with performances like that in emmy show crazy exgirlfriend. Now shes out with a book called i want to be where the normal people are. I like that title. She shares the brutally honest and hilarious account of her journey from awkward theater kid to bigtime star. Ive got to imagine putting some of this on paper, it made me squirm to read some of it. How did you feel writing it . The only thing that made me squirm was typing out the erotic poetry i wrote at age 11. Its mortifying. Reporter rachel bloom had a flair for the dramatic early on. You were almost the very definition of a broadway baby. Yes, very much. Reporter how bad did you want it . To be on broadway . Oh, my gosh, so bad. The genie from aladdin came and i said, i guarantee youll be on broadway, it would have made the bully be okay. Reporter the worst of the bullying came one day in seventh grade when the cool kids paid the most popular boy in school to ask her out as a joke. How long would you say that stayed with you . Its still with me. It gave me more of a complex for feeling i was out of place and not fitting in. Reporter throughout middle school a feeling she called the bad had been manifesting inside her. It was an undiagnosed form of obsessive compulsive disorder. It was like a heavy backpack and the only way i could momentarily shake it off was to tell my parents about these guilty intrusive thoughts, and it feels like theres a bad or a darkness thats coming to take everything you love about life and everything you love about yourself. Reporter acting, singing, writing became a distraction. And then i found the Sketch Comedy Group and i fell head over heels in love with writing sketch comedy. Reporter in 2010 bloom began funding and creating her own content. Reporter her first music video went viral. Until i made that video i hadnt thought that my love of music could combine with comedy in that way. And the way i was discovered for crazy exgirlfriend was from my videos. Reporter crazy exgirlfriend appeared on the cw in 2015. Over four seasons bloom and her collaborators, jack dolgen and adam sles sen ger wrote 157 original songs. You seem sad, rebecca. Somethings wrong, rebecca. Reporter in crazy exgirlfriend bloom played the role of rebecca bunch. Take some meds, rebecca. Reporter a lawyer with borderline personality disorder who deals with her mental health, anxiety, and depression reporter through full musical numbers imagined in her head. I believe when done right songs have the ability to tell stories and convey jokes as good as or better than other forms of writing. And this show was everything i had ever wanted to do. S so all of my energy went into that. Reporter thats got to be a lot of pressure. It was an insane four years. Reporter she found a psychologist to help her cope and wrote her own struggles into the show. There were parts that were autobiographical. I was like, are people just going to laugh at me . Does this make any sense to anyone else . Those were the scariest songs to write. And i find that those were the songs people connected with the most. For me, sharing stuff to the world, vomiting it to the world, it harkens back to my ocd, right . Im feeling a thing, i need to confess a thing, that will help it, but in the case of my emotions, it actually does. Rachel bloom, crazy exgirlfriend. In 2016 she won a golden globe. After the series wrapped last year she won her first emmy for outstanding original music and lyrics. And in march of this year bloom gave birth to a baby girl, but her daughter was put on a ventilator nicu and they learned that her partner was hospitalized with covid19, also on a ventilator. That must have been an extraordinary collision of emotions. It was the most emotionally intense and traumatic time of my life, honestly. It was really, really hard. Sles sen ger died less than two weeks later. It makes me so angry because he had so much more to do, so much more to say. He was not slowing down. But now bloom is home raising a healthy daughter and ready to perform again. Reporter would you ever want to be on broadway . I would love to be on broadway. And i had a little taste of it when we played radio city music hall. It was so special and so thrilling. And it still is despite everything ive been through, my dream. You can see her on broadway for sure, cant you . Yes. One of the things thats interesting that rachel said, when they performed the songs live which they did in theater, she heard people singing them back, thats when she realized she wasnt alone. Yes. Now i look at her so differently when you hear her back story. The part about the boy going to ask her out. Thats so cruel. So cruel. Yes. That would affect you for the rest of your life. The output was extraordinary. I want to be where the normal people are, is out today. Including what projects are next for her.
