From cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. A Police Officer shot during a routine call in san jose. Officers made contact at the residence and immediately began taking fire from the suspect. Good afternoon, im elizabeth palmer. It started as a report of a domestic disturbance and a routine Police Response in san jose. But when officers got there, they were met by gunfire. Police were called out to azuras avenue and ray street around 8 00 this morning. Department Officials Say officers were at the front door when the gunfire erupted. The shooting triggered this massive Police Response. Heres a look from our chopper. You can see at least two armed vehicles blocking off part of the road along with at least ten Police Cruisers as the suspect barricaded himself inside the home. Our Katie Nielsen is there. Reporter police were able to arrest the suspect about two hours ago. We dont have a lot of information but here is what we know. Around 8 00 this morning, officers responded to a call about a domestic disturbance. They said a man at the unit immediately started shooting at them from the balcony. One female officer was shot. Someone who lives nearby showed me one cell phone video of the officer holding her stomach and yelling for help. The man suspected of shooting the officer barricaded himself inside the home. We actually heard a loud number of bangs coming from that direction. People in the area describe the feeling of tear gas. I was looking at what was going on. And i heard a big boom. And i thought maybe i was like a little tired because my eyes started watering. Then the arrow naloxone of the ammonia came over me and i was like wow. Then i see one of those guys jump out of the van. Look, he is rubbing his eyes and i knew it wasnt just me. So whatever that was, was really strong. We saw cops with ar15s , helmets. Different swats. Walking around. Up and down the block. So e with kind of knew it was a little serious. Reporter shortly after those bangs, we saw one man being loaded into an ambulance. We believe that was the suspect. He may have been bitten by a police k9. We are waiting for another update from san jose police. We were hoping to get an update on that injured officers condition. The last we heard, she was immediately rushed into hospital and straight into surgery. Just a horrific ordeal in san jose this morning. Katie, im curious, for the people who live in that neighborhood, were they forced out of their homes . Do they have to barricade inside . What were they being told to do in. Reporter the majority of the people who live in the complex were told to evacuate. So there is a home depot, a mcdonalds. A lot of people who brought their laptops down and were working out of the mcdonalds but they said it was really unsettling and concerning. To have Something Like this happen so early in the morning and so apparently out of the blue. A routine police call. Police hadnt even started talking to the man yet. They were still down on the ground floor and as soon as the officers got out of the cars and started heading toward that unit, thats when the man came out and immediately fired down on the officers hitting the female officer in the midsection. A lot of folks were headed to work, maybe taking their kids to school. All right, katie, thanks so much. Meanwhile, an suv struck and killed a fouryearold girl in San Francisco. It happened last night just down the road from oracle park. Were crowds of people were making their way to the giants game. They were pushing the child in the stroller in the crosswalk at 4th and king at the time of the crash. The father suffered lifethreatening injuries. The other parent was not injured. People who live in the area told us they have had concerns about safety in that spot. When i go take the train for work, i cross this intersection with my bike and i think it is really dangerous. Have to make sure no one is coming and people try to turn on red when the crosswalk sign is going. And so, you have to really be paying attention. The driver did stay on the scene and is cooperating with police. Now to the latest out of maui where the death toll stands at 106 with the majority of the victims yet to be identified and the crews have a long way to go to complete their search of the disaster area. Anne makovec joins us now, we understand that many evacuees from lahaina are just now returning home for the First Time Since those fires broke out . Reporter we have seen this process after some of our local wild fires. People are able to go into the burn zones temporarily. To basically see what is left. It is a nerveracking and emotional process. The huge lines started forming overnight after the governor announced the reopening of a main road into and out of west maui. And lahaina specifically. People are going back to survey the damage themselves and see if there is anything they could recover. Not just me. Lost everything. Everything is gone. Thank god i have my husband. And i survived. Reporter they are only letting people back in certain areas as crews have only gone through a thursday of the damaged area. 700 fema personnel are on the ground providing early assistance to the thousands of survivors. That includes an initial 700 payment for essentials like food and medicine. They are helping other emergency crews search the rubble for any more victims. We are working carefully to search the affected areas. The county has set up this website for people who need help and those who can offer services from transportation to food to testify rare celter. And streaming on cbs news bay area. A group of women who spent time incarcerated at a federal prison in dublin filed a Class Action Lawsuit against the prison for alleged sex abuse. Attorneys representing the victims say the federal bureau of prisons has known about the issue at fci dublin for decades. And not enough is being done to stop the abuse. They say it continues to this day. We reached out to the federal bureau of prisons for comment but they dont comment on pending litigation or ongoing legal proceedings. State Health Officials reinstated San Franciscos laguna honda hospital in the medical. It comes just days after city Health Officials asked to be reinstated. This ensures 200 million of state funding every year will continue to go to the embattled hospital. And the 500 patients would be forced to relocate putting their health at risk. When the desertification threats came to us, we knew we had to come together and fight for laguna honda. It still needs to apply for reinstatement into the medicare program. But medical makes up about 95 of the budget. Still ahead, as more students head back to the classroom, there is an increased focus on their Mental Health and well being. Theres a little bit of a cooling trend on the way in the bay area. But then wait until you hear what is it is back to school week across the bay area. Today, 48,000 San Francisco unified kids returned to the classroom. Some parents dropped off their kids at school. Some for the very first time. We came over here the other day and parked and walked around. To kind of get the lay of the land. And we talked about getting to play outside. And meeting new friends. And school lunch. I remember those first day jitters. The district says they are looking to fill a number of teacher vacancies but all students should get the attention they need. And many Bay Area School districts are prioritizing Mental Health in an effort to curb what many are already calling a crisis. Reporter when cassandra lopez, a student at overfeld high school in san jose was just nine years old, she realized something about her was off. I would cry a lot. I didnt even know why. In my head, it was just, felt really heavy. Reporter for years she prayed it was just a phase. But when the pandemic hit, things began to spin out of control. It kind of got to the point where i couldnt leave my house. I didnt want to eat. Reporter it got so bad that in 2021, she tried to end her life. Not once, but twice. I didnt see a point of living. Reporter then, a chance encounter turned things around. I was crying in this hall when i met lassero. Reporter the School Social worker. When i met him, it felt like i finally had someone. I finally had someone that clicked with me. Reporter for the last two years, cassandra had been seeing him once a week. And while her road to recovery is not over yet, she found something she thought she had lost. Hope. I realized theres a lot of meaning in life. Though im young. I know that i can get through it. Reporter according to the cdc, nearly one in four High School Students experienced challenges in covid. Cassandras School District reported a 60 spike in Mental Health referrals since the pandemic began. It is one of the reasons the district spent a big chunk of its Covid Relief Fund not on new computers but on more social workers. Since covid there was a clear need to help. Reporter vito is the principal. He says thanks to that money, his school was able to hire lazero, doubling its Mental Health staff. They are able to keep their Wellness Center open all day instead of a few hours. We have to take care of who they are as homes an people. That meant really not pretending their Mental Health issues didnt exist. But meeting them where they are. And helping them to thrive and recover fully so they can engage in school and education. Reporter lazero said he couldnt believe how many students needed help. There was a lot of anxiety. A lot of depression. A lot of our students were struggling with suicidal thoughts. Reporter as for cassandra, she is a happy senior these days with dreams of becoming, wait for it, a social worker. I just want to be there for anyone that feels like this. Because no one should feel left alone. Reporter fighting to end the Mental Health crisis by using her own experience to help others. If you know anyone struggling with their Mental Health, experts say advise them to seek out a professional and to keep in mind, even though things may seem bleak, there is light and better times ahead. Because we have low pressure, the smoke will be confined to Northern California as we run the time lapse on where the smoke should be going between now and monday. You will see it doesnt vary much from way up around the california oregon border so it wont be a factor for Northern California. This will. This remains the remnants of eugene off the coast will drag moisture to the east of the sierra nevada. It is just exploding in lightning bolts on the sierra and thats nod good news. Day dont want any fires out there either. Late week cooling to near normal readings so we have already begun a cooldown. It will continue through friday. Possibility of a popup shower. And that is a little bit cooler than it was at this time yesterday. Overnight lows mild. Temperatures in the 60s. Daytime highs will be warm. Concord down to 90. San jose, 85. For thursday, the high temperatures will be 93 at fairfield. 94 at antioch. 93 at livermore. Lets have a look at the extended. It is still going to be a mild week. But we get more clouds coming in friday. And more clouds coming in monday and tuesday. So less sunshine than we have had lately. But temperatures come down. Into the low 80s on thursday and the mid 80s on thursday. Still warm inland tomorrow. Low 90s inland. And we warm it up again on monday. Monday is a big question mark. Something could be coming in so we will stay tuned on that. But at least the weekend looks dry. That is good. Because liz i understand the 49ers are playing. They are always playing. A big win for foster kids in santa clara county. The board of supervisors voted yesterday to send more money to three key foster youth programs. Those programs help foster students get through high school and transition into post secondary education. Now to san jose where the city is moving forward in its effort to crack down on homeless encampments. And rvs around schools. City officials are voting to ban encampments from 150 feet of schools. They are concerned about breakins or student safety. San joses rules and open Government Committee unanimously approved the proposal last week.
