Going to cure our speeding problem. It is a multilayer need in a city that has a serious problem. Reporter according to walk sf, 14 pedestrians have been killed in the city this year and hundreds more injured. In addition to the speed cameras, the organization is pushing the city to ban cars from turning right on red lights and from parking near intersections. Jody says she believes the city still has a long way to go to make the streets as safe as possible, but this law will definitely help. This is something that we have been working on and believe that its going to change the way that people drive and really realize that, you know, its not acceptable to be speeding in a very dense neighborhoodbased city like San Francisco. Reporter specific locations for the 33 cameras have not been chosen yet. The city is expected to work with local communities to create the program guidelines. A coalition called oakland privacy said having speed cameras sent the best way to address speeding and the Pilot Program will cost a lot of money. They sent us a statement saying, a lot, not all, of speeding is related to bad road design and lack of traffic. Calming features, which is especially present in low income neighborhoods with traditionally low levels investment. San Francisco Mayor london breed said they will install the cameras as soon as possible. Once they are turned on, drivers will have a 60day grace period, meaning if you get a citation, it will be just a warning. Another bill signed by governor gavin newsom will ban the banning of books and other textbook censorship in schools and despite that new law theres an ongoing battle between San Jose City officials and a group of conservative Silicon Valley parents groups that urge parents to opt out of curriculum that supports the lgbtq community, one Council Member saying the group is spreading hateful language and misinformation. On Capitol Hill Congress still searching for a new speaker of the house. House republicans will gather tonight for another closed door meeting to see how far apart they are in the battle over selecting a new leader. Skyler henry with the details. Reporter jim jordan stayed on capitol hill off the weekend meeting with republican colleagues who still are not on board with his becoming the next speaker of the house. Well listen to concerns you may have. I think none of those concerns are anything that we cant address. I feel good about where were at. Reporter jordan did gain some momentum when the chairman of the House Armed Services committee, congressman mike rogers, announced on twitter he is going to vote for jordan, but at least a dozen or so house gop members still oppose him, leaving jordan will short of the 217 votes needed to become speaker. Frankly, you look at the dynamics of our conference, theres not a Single Member who can satisfy 217 members. Reporter that has prompted some to speculate that republicans may need to cut a deal with democrats in order to seat a new speaker. If there is a need. If the radical almost handful of people on the republican side make us unable to return to general work on the house, then i think obviously a deal will have to be done. Reporter so far all of the voting has taken place behind closed doors with only republicans casting votes, but gop leaders are planning to hold a full vote on the house floor tuesday forcing their members to say publicly whether they support jordan or not. A public vote could add pressure to those holding out to move on to the more pressing issues of the country like avoiding a Government Shutdown and providing help and aid for israel and ukraine. Redemption for a Historic Church in san jose, how the work of a pastor Grace Baptist Church in san jose narrowly escaped demolition after their previous pastor tried to sell the land to a developer to build housing and a new church. But now its possible that a designation as a landmark might save the day. John ramos has the story. Reporter Grace Baptist Church has been at its san jose location for more than 80 years and the congregation would make a lot of money if it sold it, but making money isnt the mission there. Like a lot of churches post pandemic, the group of worshipers at Grace Baptist Churchs service was pretty small, 16 people, to be exact, but theyre on a mission to help people in the san jose downtown area and its important that they have a place to do it. Right around the corner where you see people walking, homeless, right there on santa clara a block away and were right in the middle of all that and thats exactly where Grace Baptist Church wants to be. Reporter reverend kenneth love was only a guest pastor on this day because the congregation no longer has a pastor. They recently cut ties with their former pastor, george oliver, after he tried to enter into an agreement with a developer to demolish the church to build housing. Its right across the street from san jose state, a prime location that would have netted millions of dollars. But i dont believe the core of the church ever gave that a thought. As a matter of fact, i think they were very surprised and maybe felt a little threatened when that surfaced. Reporter what was threatened was a historical legacy as the center of the Civil Rights Movement in san jose. Built in 1941, it was once ministered by a famous antiwar crusader, reverend shorty collins. The basement was used as an organizing location for the early united farmworkers and cesar chavez was said to have spoken there and more recently it was a Gathering Place for the community following the guilty verdict in the killing of george floyd. Dr. Penny hogue joined the church in 1961 as a student and said it turned her into a social activist. Oh, i think its very important. It certainly influenced those of us who were members at the time and how we live our life. Reporter the church now ministers to the homeless and down and out in the area and thats why they consider the location to be so important. Its a message and people in this community see it as a message. Its a reminder of what else is there. There is a place thats safe. Reporter it may be about to get even safer because the city is on the verge of granting historical landmark status to the church, which would severely restrict what could be done with the building. To me it would be an insurance against a developer coming in. This is very valuable property and this is the jewel of the developments always, but i feel that the importance of it is to have a piece of san jose preserved as a Community Meeting place for this neighborhood. I shall dwell in the house of the lord forever and ever and ever. Reporter it may not be forever, but the people who dwell in this house of the lord intend to be here for a very long time, god willing. The San Jose City council will decide whether to grant historical landmark status in the next few weeks. Coming up on the evening edition, its getting harder to own your Favorite Movie or tv show. This one is going to be brief, back to slightly below average temperatures in time for the weekend. Heres a nice look from the top of mount diablo, a mix of clouds and sunshine, no moisture, current temperature just short of 70 degrees. Everybody else is still in the 70s. The warmup will be slowed down a bit by the presence of widespread fog to begin the day tuesday, even into the inland valleys by early tomorrow morning, but that should retreat by midmorning at the latest making it back to the coast as we head towards late morning, maybe early afternoon at the latest. Temperatures will warm up quickly once the sunburns through that layer of fog. Tonight a mix of 60s and low 50s, which is a little above average. Lets look at the forecast highs for tuesday afternoon reaching up into the low to mid80s. In the Santa Clara Valley inland temperatures 5 to 8 degrees above normal for this time of year. Temperatures around the bay will be a degree or 2 above average. Middle 80s inland in the east bay, mid90s later this week, upper 60s along the coast, low to mid70s for San Francisco and oakland, closer to the five to eight degree departure from average for the north bay with highs in the low to mid80s. Youll flirt with 90 degrees later this week as well. In fact, beginning already on wednesday, but as we warm up, we arent talking about an excessively dangerous heatwave. Its midoctober. Well be close to record territory, but our heat risk is in the low category tomorrow and it only reaches to the moderate category by wednesday and thursday. The orange really spreads out across the map thursday, but it largely disappears already on friday. So a brief encounter with these abnormally warm temperature, the warmest day thursday, close to record territory, forecasting a breaking High Temperature of 92 degrees in san jose, most other locations within 2 to 4 degrees of those records for the 19th of october. Lets look at the sevenday forecast. Temperatures reach their peak thursday and back down quickly to about 20 degrees cooler by saturday and sunday. At this point beyond the scope of the sevenday forecast, it looks like cooler weather rolls our way tuesday and wednesday next week with a decent shower chance, but thats beyond the sevenday forecast. In the short term we just have warm to even hot temperatures wednesday and thursday and back to close to typical october temperatures over the weekend with a mixes of clouds and sunshine this weekend, more clouds along the coast and cooler, low 60s for the coastal locations through the weekend into early next week.
