Slow you down even more and you could see it backed up into the burlingame area and north one oh one is also backed up so avoid the stretch if you can this morning, even though crews are trying to clear that first accident 2. 80 is going to just flawless so far this morning, its been a problem free even El Camino Real that runs parallel with the one o one looks good as well for your alternate taking a quick peek at the bay bridge toll plaza it is been problem for here all morning long only 11 minutes on your west penn 80 commute from the macarthur maze across the upper deck in to San Francisco john. Working out there today is a clear skies looking at the horizon, no fog whatsoever across the bay area right now definitely some cloud cover though that will be hanging out across the bay area today cloud cover a part of this system that is going to be bringing rain to both central and Southern California here in the bay area though working remain try to the weekend. 40s and 50s for your current temperatures with Oakland Hayward redwood city and san matteo in the 40s right now, San Francisco berkeley in the 50s. Well fairfield are only spot in the 30s a much more mild start to the day than what we have been saying by the time we work our way into the afternoon a warmer day than what we have been seeing as well look at that mid 70s, inland low 70s by the coast and bay. James all right. Thank you john to our top story this morning in just a few hours from now oakland city leaders will be addressing the public about its decision. To fire police chief Anne Kirkpatrick and that decision to fire her was unanimous between the mayor and the members of the Police Commission kron fours will tran live in the city of oakland with the latest well. We are in front of city hall and we will carry that News Conference for you live when it happens as far as Ann Kirkpatrick she been on the job for 3 years. It was a sudden surprising and swift decision by the Police Commission to fire her they had a closed door meeting yesterday with mayor libby shaft unanimously decided to fire her without cause there was nothing that led up to it, although there had the years of friction between the commission as well as the police chief the police chief is oaklands First Female Police officer and when she was hired 3 years ago, she was the 4th Police Officer in the span of 7 months because of a allegations investigation involving a teenage girl and many of the Police Officers in oakland and thats why she was brought in to clean things up but throughout the years theres been a lot of friction between the commission and her including 2 years ago when 5 oakland Police Officers opened fire on an unarmed man the commission and swell as many in the community, one of those Police Officers at the very least fired. But instead they say kirkpatrick protected these officers, heres side. The Police Commission as well as the mayor talking about their decisions. Wasnt enough. Leadership and so that we needed new leadership for oakland, its my duty as the mayor to recognize the role and authority of this commission. And also to recognize when the trust between the Police Commission and the police chief has become irrevocably broken. Will prevent this city from moving forward. The way the laws are written in Oakland Robin in james the Complaints Commission could have done that and it is made up of civilians, they could have decided to fire her but it never would have happened without the approval, a mayor libby schaaf so now the assistant police chief will be the interim police chief has shop continues to look for another police chief to run oakland in the meantime she is technically on the job still because there is a letter that she has to sign to agree whether or not of the decision to terminate her and if she does agree to that. She will be paid approximately 270,000 thats her annual salary again when it happens as far as the new com News Conference we will carry that live for you back to you. All right, thank you very much well now the oakland Police Officers association is releasing a statement regarding kirkpatrick firing. You see on the screen reads in part the oakland Police Officers association stands ready to work with whomever is our next police chief. Despite the changes at the top the department oakland Police Officers continue to come to work every day and serve our residents in californias most crime challenge city. Well theres been a lot of contention with the former police chief and from members of the Oakland Community with specifically how she handled. A Police Shooting that happened nearly 2 years ago. Well 4 oakland Police Officers opened fire on a homeless man, 31 yearold joshua pollack she died back on march 11th of 2018. So theres a lot of criticism about that particular shooting. Some folks say that it was unjustified because pollack appear to be just waking up and there didnt seem to be much of a threat to the officers now at the time kirkpatrick declined to discipline those officers and that spark a lot of outrage within the community some calling for her to be fired last year. Well of course is a developing story that were following for you so coming up at 8 oclock this morning, oakland city leaders will hold a press conference well talk a little more about the firing of whats going on will tran will be there live covering that story for you and can also find more details on our website as well as reaction at kron 4 dot com. All right. We have some breaking news to tell you about a 6 oh 6 this morning, partly a bear roaming in the neighborhood in los angeles county, heres some live pictures from our sister station ktla down in los angeles you can see this is a residential area the bear spotted about 2 30 this morning roaming around this neighborhood in monrovia and you can see a police there now that was spotted at one point circling around somebodys front lawn and then laying down for a bit then getting up and moving off and every time it spotted. It seems to move off before police could arrive to the wherever that scene is a but here you can see them canvassing the neighborhood there is an Elementary School nearby. Now depending on where this is in monrovia it may not be which is by the way northeast of la kind of up near pasadena just to the east a pack of pasadena. I think theres a bear spot. A sighting was in the middle of the screen. Its hard for me to make up for my Vantage Point but towards the top middle of the screen. Maybe all the point make it out. But this is kind of right near monrovia park which is sort of on the southern edge of the Angeles National forest, so its not surprising that every now and then you might get wildlife coming down into the populated right there in the middle of the screen. The camera sort of slowly pushing in and kind of make out the shadowy figure. A large bear so not something you typically d c every day in a residential neighborhood but as folks are waking up there. There certainly waking up to kind of a kind of a scare but well keep an eye on the story keep you updated as police try and relocate this bear to someplace a little safer for it. That was rebecca youre talking about that hot spot that we saw on southbound 1, 1, thats still sort of affecting traffic and we had another crash in that same area thats of course not going help your commute whats its been a mess, im socalled hot spot because the backup is so bad and that second accident is still there though all lanes are clear though for our first hot spot that was upbeat how the accident that happened just before the 2 oclock hour this morning that had only one lane out of the 5 open to traffic. So lanes are back open chp did a cat everything cleared just about 10 minutes or so ago which is what they wanted they wanted it reopen right around 6 oclock and thats exactly what we got, but you can see traffic still heavily impacted out of burlingame trying to get into san mateo because traffic is in the recovery stage is. And yes there is that second accident that im tracking in the back up here and thats near the poplar avenue exit. So that is still causing backups because the far right lane is still shut down by chp for that crash is still in the meantime to 80s going to be our best bet even El Camino Real that also runs a parallel with one oh one. Then you can jump back on the 92 and they get back over to the san mateo area that way so that is going to be a good alternate for you in the meantime until traffic is fully recovered this morning metering lights were turned on just after 6 oclock this morning. Were not looking too bad as far as the drive time goes youre backed up just 2 about the foot of the macarthur maze right now but 11 minutes to make your way across the upper deck of the bay bridge. In the San Francisco. Thats really good for this hour the morning. Its packed here the san mateo bridge looking at those cars in the right hand side, your screen. But traffic is moving and im tracking about a 17 minute commute for you on your westbound 92 right over to one on one. Well thats a look at traffic, lets a check of the weather with jobs. The s rebecca we are looking at some clear skies looking out across the day. But if you do look up youre gonna notice. Some cloud cover today. San francisco just one of many spots that is under for fog free conditions to kick off this friday morning you can see that cloud cover showing up here in stormtracker 4 zooming out across the region what we do have to our south of some shower activity thats going begin pushing into the Central Coast on into the evening tonight and then inundating the rest of the state excluding northern come tomorrow morning. So theres your Central Coast showers overnight tonight making their way into tomorrow central and Southern California looking at some light rainfall by no means a drought buster here but enough rain to help the situation out areas like la san diego on the central valley, which is now under moderate drought southern sierra getting some snowfall but not so much for taco but the bay area also going to be remaining dry through the weekend. Now it does look like the end of february is going to continue to be on this dry trend with next week the last week of february remaining dry now sunday, not this upcoming sunday, but the following one next weekend. It is march 1st and it looks like march 1st at least as of right now does by bring our best chance of rainfall a year extended forecast. Thats still a long ways away but i do hope to see some rainfall arriving towards march. And i think we could definitely use a lot of come next month as for temperatures today. Do expect upper 60s to low 70s montero 63 for your high with daly city in half moon bay. Each in the low 70s. Low 70s to upper 60s as well on the bay side of the peninsula. Further south on the peninsula. Look for to daytime highs back into the 70s today, a lot warmer than yesterday was and a noticeable warm up to san jose and milpitas 74 for your highs while hayward also at 74 for the high today. Berkeley oakland richmond, the low 70s for you mid 70s in the north bay with napa sonoma on over to santa rosa in petaluma are for warmest spots at 75 degrees. And its february that is definitely on the warm side saturday and sunday a little cooler but also little clear than todays about to be monday tuesday of next week temperatures warming back up back to the low 70s for your average highs pie tuesday of next week as well. Thank you very much rebecca, so our top story this morning in just a few hours time from now oakland city leaders will be addressing the public on their decision to fire police chief Anne Kirkpatrick and this was a unanimous decision between the mayor and the members of the Police Commission kron fours will tran live with the latest in oakland, well. The Police Commission its regarded as one of the most powerful commissions in the entire country they had the power and they exercise that power last night a fire and kirkpatrick just 3 years on the job so this morning. Oakland, the city is looking for its new police chief after suddenly swiftly and surprisingly firing kirkpatrick they had a closed door meeting, yes, the commission have though power to do that, but it would not have been carried all the way through unless they got the approval a mayor libby shaft which shaft she held a News Conference late last night saying that she agreed with the Commission Says she does not regret hiring kirkpatrick 3 years ago making her the citys First Female Police officers there was nothing that you can point to leading up to last nights meeting that would have anybody believing this was something that she would be fired over instead, its just been years of animosity including 2 years ago when 5 Police Officers opened fire on an unarmed man many in the community including the commission demanded at the very least that those Police Officers be fired instead they say kirkpatrick protected. Those Police Officers so she is fired she will be presented with a letter from the city of oakland basically saying do you agree to your termination and if you do you are entitled to approximately 270,000 of pay and severance pay if not this could be a long battle obviously were right in front of city hall and once that News Conference begins at 8 oclock. We will carry that live for you when it happens back to you. All right, thank you very much well so back to our other breaking news this morning in southern my goodness, this is not something you want to see when you step out the door a bear wandering through town. This is in the monrovia neighborhood just north and east of la the report early this morning when it was still percent i think theres a bear in my front lawn. May be laying down about 10 police got there the bear wandered off that took a while to finally catch up with that. There it the suns up its light outside we can definitely see we have crews on scene right there and of course of a situation like this. They want to tranquilize the bear and relocated a ride so hopefully all goes well, but of course the neighborhood sort of on lockdown right now because they dont want people out roaming the streets until they get the situation under control this not a little bear this is a make this a big very other probably waiting for department of fish and wildlife, but the agents to get there with those tranquilizer darts because the last thing they want is for this pair to obviously started tacking right or to try to break into one of the homes thats nearby can see walking up one of the driveways there were reports earlier this morning that to the witnesses were calling 911 saying i think its tougher um my garbage can on a stopped in front of one of the the newsstands right there on street, its just out for a morning stroll i just couldnt says fresh air as they widen shot here you can definitely see just how a packed this is what terms of a residential homes. This is a suburban neighborhood and looks like the bears right behind that tree walking up the driveway going make its way into the backyard of that home but. Police are trying to keep a watchful eye on it trying to keep it from wandering off and well see where it goes from here but yeah, first spotted early this morning around 02 30am their i dos and there is an Elementary School nearby and is going to start impacting, you know people arriving to drop off kids their ride, im sure theyre going want to make sure this pier is nowhere near that campus putting anybody at risk, but we see it sort of wandering into the back parking area of this house and of course well stay on top of the situation for you well let you know what happened so make sure you. Keep it tune on air and online and well keep you updated. Ok. Meanwhile, a big story that were following for you out of the east bay a high school in oakland shut down until further notice after a cancer causing chemical was found on campus. Agency last you can hear parents theyre serious they were furious at this a School Meeting there speaking to the leaders about what theyre going to do about this chemical that was found on the grounds of a climb as high school. Now crews found the chemical while removing removing a fuel tank that was right next to the schools tennis court. The school will remain closed at least through early next week for air quality test. Our concern is that there realized tc that that seeped through the ground and through our floors into the building in the air. And so if there are elevated levels of that then we can have school here. So School Officials they confirmed that the chemical did not originate right there on the school grounds. But the state is cleaning up a handful of contaminated sites just less than a mile away. Although the sites are contaminated with the same chemical. Yeah, the School District also acknowledges that the campus does have a history of high profile cases of cancer, including 2 graduates of a climate high school darrell agents died from leukemia back in 2017 just a month after graduation and then this past fall a graduate from 2018 remote sanders died of bone cancer. That 20 yearold played football at Laney College it was during his first season there that he broke his leg and that is when doctors discovered the cancer at this point theres no definitive link between these deaths and the discovery of the chemical, apple climates high school. But that raises questions about what this chemical is exactly what was found in the groundwater is a chemical called its known as tce and its a colorless liquid thats produced in large volumes for commercial purposes, its primarily used in 2 ways one to make chemicals like refrigerants and it also has a solvent to remove grease from metal parts studies show that longtime exposure to tce can cause an increased risk of cancer. And were back time now 6. 45 the got john here talking about our friday forecast yesterday that again so right. Today yeah, definitely looking at a nice day ahead of us guys who are talking temperatures warmer than they have been all week so far it feels a little bit more like spring. But hey weve got used to springlike weather today just a little extra spring like i guess. Looking out there at the Golden Gate Bridge skies, not too bad you actually do have a bit of blue to them now that the sun is growing a little higher in the horizon also some cloud cover though that youll notice throughout the day today, not only the warmest day of the week but also definitely one of our cloudier ones too and that cloud cover is associated with some much needed rainfall which is now beginning to be seen in the southern sierra in the form of rain and then mixing with snow higher up and then some spotty showers right along the Central Coast rainfall is going crazy during our overnight hours tonight for our neighbors to the south with showers along the Central Coast overnight spreading through la san diego and the rest of southern through hours overnight tonight into tomorrow now the bay area on up to tahoe right at the northern terminus of where were going to be seeing rain and snow here so were actually not going to be looking at much activity here in our own back yard, even though we certainly could be using it. A dry weekend ahead for us, its just our neighbors to the south that are getting into that much needed rain now as we work our way through the remainder of february which is the rest of next week the last week of the month. It does look like its going to be a dry finish to the month, but his march rolls around which is not this sunday, but the following one next sunday. We do actually see the opportunity of what could be some rainfall working its where direction. Not come in until the beginning of next month so february certainly go live up to its and dry trend thats been off 2 so far. But march could bring some hope for us in some much needed rain and snow. 60s and 70s for your daytime highs today more of us today in the 70s, the knot with millbrae at 70 Degrees SouthSan Francisco in burlingame beach at 71, saying carlos redwood city woodside in san mateo at 72 degrees each santa Clara Campbell cupertino and sunnyvale each at 73 east bay daytime highs in the low to mid 70s today with conquered in walnut creek comfortably at 74 oakland and richmond at 73 degrees each north bay temperatures napa Sonoma Santa Rosa down to petaluma each at 75 for your daytime highs, heres a breakdown of your next 7 days so saturday and sunday not going to be as warm as today will be back down into the 60s but that still warmer than we should be. With daytime highs definitely just feeling more like spring all the way through the weekend a good weekend to get outside. Next week also going to be warm and dry ahead of what will be some rainfall looking possible on into the end of next weekend. Rebecca looking for in a home that sunshine john and the 70s will take it. Well love looking at a new accident now does in the east bay, this is a right as we get through the san pablo. Area so west 80 right at el portal drive. It is blocking couple lanes you can see its starting to back up and slow down just a bit coming out of the hercules area and then we have another accident getting to berkeley west spent 80 reading gilman street. Its on the right hand shoulder a big ring involved though, and that is causing some attention thats where you can see delays directly behind it so trying to get to macarthur maze. Its going to slow you down with those 2 accidents there but once you get to the bay bridge that things are looking good ill get to that in just a moment over to our crash on the peninsula weve been dealing with it for quite some time now earlier hot spots just to the north of the crash that has been cleared. But south 1, 1, right a popular we still do have the right lane blocked there and the traffic still trying to recover from the earlier crash. And now this one so what 2. 80 is definitely going to be your best bet El Camino Real also a alternate in the meantime to try to avoid the mess on the one o one bay bridge toll plaza, yes, its busy. I was observing an animal that was in desperate need emotional support he seemed pretty terrified most humans specifically men Mara Rodriguez has been with meals since day one building a relationship in guiding him back to health it was through many many hours that we formed this relationship that was really unlike anything ive ever formed with an animal about a month after getting meal and others who donated a female tiger named karma and they happen to be 2 weeks apart, theyve been best friends ever this is the first time to teaching zoo has had tigers in students are taking full advantage of the opportunities. Working with me on karma is my First Experience with any big cat so getting to work with the pair of them and see their natural behaviors and then working together has been a blessing now the zoo is looking to expand to provide the best possible home for their newest additions want to offer and provide both our tigers. With a larger more naturalistic home and were hoping to do that by fundraising over the next year so theyre hoping to raise 2 million for state of the art have attacked the inclusion will not only benefit the tigers it will also create a unique experience for students and the public.
