But there is some good news. The ministry also says nearly 20,000 of those people have recovered so far just over 1500 people have died of covid19 in columbia as latin america has become the new epicenter of the virus. Brazil peru and chile currently have the highest number of confirmed cases in the region and as much of the bay area starts to reopen a lot of people are wondering just how safe it is to go out to restaurants and shopping malls kron 4 spoke with doctor Robert Wachter about the situation earlier today, hes a professor. And hes the chair of the department of medicine at ucsf he says well case numbers are down in the city we still need to wear masks and keep physical distancing in mind when were out. Well we owe a incredible debt of gratitude air and to our Health Directors and to our people who took the warning seriously as of today across the 3 months of this pandemic there have been 45 people in San Francisco that di 45 people there have been more than 20,000 people in new york city new york citys 9 times larger 20,010 20 plus 25,000 people were says 45. So authorities in San Francisco or being appropriately careful and i think the people in San Francisco for being appropriately careful. It is time where we can begin opening up, but we have to do it slowly. We have to stay at least 6 feet apart, we have to wear masks if youre going to be an in contact with anybody that outside when you going to be in close contact with people i think if we do that we have to be testing people who get sick, we have to going after their contacts, weve got a very robust Contact Tracing progress i think were doing it really really smart and at the end we will say that was a little bit inconvenient and we saved 10s of thousands of lives because we did this way. Doctor wachter also said while it is tempting to think about going back to life as we know it before the quarantine as soon as possible the virus is certainly still out there. And we all need to approach gatherings of more than a few people with caution. Happening tomorrow, San Francisco will resume enforcement of parking violations tied to street sweeping the city stopped issuing tickets back in march on the 17th during stay at home orders and now as more businesses and activities resume the city says it is necessary to get back to street sweeping in that normal routine.
