Crown for staying on top of breaking news for you this saturday night at 6 oclock as we told you at the top of the newscast, right now berkeley fire crews, a number along with a number of other agencies on the scene of a 6 alarm Apartment Fire that is unfolding in Downtown Berkeley want to show you a live picture of that scene just east in the hills there that kind of haze that you see in the middle of your screen right there. That is that fire that is still burning out of control tonight. The scene is happening right now at university in shattuck thats just west of the cal Berkeley Campus. This is now forced dozens to evacuate from nearby buildings. Police say that this fire started about 5. 30 this evening. We dont know a cause just yet but that is part of the Ongoing Investigation right now University Avenue is shut down in both directions in that area so fire crews can work to control that blaze just getting off the phone with. One of the berkeley fire chiefs on the scene there they are saying that this 7 story building. Theyre still trying to find exactly where this fire sparked. So they can put water on it and do whatever they can to extinguish the flames. And we do want to say that they fire is causing some really poor air quality in the east bay right now this is from purple air dot com. We would use this map a lot during a wildfire season to see polluted the air was with all the smoke from the wildfires showing us right now that the berkeley area is now up to 285. That is the particles and that is just really poor air quality really want to be in the 100 range to even be considered sort of good. So 2. 85 is very pour theres a lot of smoke pouring into the air because of this fire and we are on top of it. We have crews on the way. Well have a live report as soon as we can make that available which should be pretty soon we do want go now to our 4 zone forecast from meteorologist rodriguez is here to break down what we can expect first thing as we walk out the door for the start of our sunday. Hey there jonathan in just seen in yeah, lets track Current Conditions were that fire is burning in the east bay over berkeley and were still seeing some smoke billowing out into the atmosphere and i know a lot of viewers youve been kind enough to send me your twitter reports who live in and around that area extremely poor air quality were does smell and look very smoky and hazy out there so please limit your Outdoor Activity as much as you can tonight if you do live in that area, stay indoors, especially if you do have any pulmonary or respiratory issues we are tracking wind speeds out there right now fairly calm anywhere from 3 to 9 mile per hour winds and wind direction out of the northeast heading to the southwest so no surprise that all areas in and around the bay area shoreline impacted with that poor air quality because of the wind direction and also the proximity of that fire, lets take a look at current satellite and radar very dry. Calm conditions out there for the most part. Temperatures right now cooling down into the 40s for most of our inland valleys, not just in the north bay, but even the inland valleys of the east bay as well with widespread mid 50s right around the bay area shoreline, mild temperatures for downtown San Francisco and hayward and oakland, currently in the midfifties but overnight lows tonight going to cool into the 30s and 40s with the coolest cities in the north bay area, no surprise there santa rosa freezing temperatures overnight. 32 degrees, no frost or freeze warnings in effect we could see some patchy frost and freeze so just keep that in mind in the overnight hours because of these very cold conditions livermore 39 degrees for your overnight lows. But tomorrows daytime highs going to continue with that cooling trend even for your sunday afternoon with temperatures cooling down about 2 to 5 degrees from todays daytime highs widespread low to mid 60s low 60s for downtown San Francisco and oakland, but mid 60s for those of you in santa rosa livermore and even san jose cooling down to 63 degrees now tomorrow is going to be the warmest day of the next 7 and were continually going to cool down even on your thursday for your thanksgiving day it is going to be the coolest day of the next 7 few degrees below average to remember daytime highs will peak by around noon to 3 oclock in the afternoon on thanksgiving day cp do have any social distancing. Outdoor plans take advantage of that time period because as you can see it is going to cool down significantly. All right reason. Knew that he would get an Early Release i had no idea it would be this early. Still ahead tonight at 8 a mother shaken up after learning a man who victimize her daughter will be walking out early all a part of the states plan to slow the spread of covid19 behind bars. And the Grocery Store aisles and picked over shelves panic buying up. For the second time during the pandemic still to come tonight why one expert says folks are stocking up. Everyone into Grocery Store aisles and picked over shelves, panic buying once again picking up for the second time during this pandemic products in highdemand include toilet paper obviously Hand Sanitizer as well and paper towels kristi gross talk to an expert about why people are stocking up. Again i could not a week. Not being their shelves and empty aisles thats what debra bowen found at the target store in antique issue into saturday there is no paper towels no toilet paper there are only a few boxes of kleenex us its a sight thats becoming all too familiar again at some Stores Across the Central Valley dont people realize they get an immediate last time why do you need it. Now i mean just a empty shelves were also found at this target on mchenry avenue in modesto a few days ago and this is the scene at the target on trinity parkway in stockton saturday Everybody Needs to have these products and would be more neighbors in step with just think about if youre hoarding it somebodys going without it all of this comes just days after the governor announced a limited stay at home order people are panic buying because they are they want some sense of control and one way to control things is to you know stock your house with his much stopped as possible. Its a kind of compulsive behavior. Julie garcia is a life coach and says the fear and anxiety people are feeling about the pandemic is leading to some selfish behaviors all people do when they panicked by is because everyone else the same amount of stress if not more than a themselves are feeling garcia recommends people to stop and think about what theyre doing and who its affecting if you are going to overload then then be generous donate some of that to homeless shelters too. Women shelters to other places that really would benefit from your anxiety buying bowen says people need to keep in mind the stores will stay open so theres no need to hoard supplies people in taking everything we would be fine everybody would have everything. That was kristi gross reporting for us tonight and some stores are already limiting the amount of toilet paper and other essential items. That you can buy. This is a call for staying on top of breaking news out of the east bay tonight, a 6 alarm fire forcing. Dozens of evacuat forcing on top of breaking news for you this saturday night a 6 alarm fire ripping through an Apartment Building in Downtown Berkeley, forcing folks to evacuate from nearby buildings. The scene filling the east bay skies with plenty of hazardous smoke. This is now a 6 alarm fire its happening right now at university in shattuck thats just west of the cal Berkeley Campus police say that this fire started about 5. 30 this evening. And university is shut down in both directions while firefighters continue right now to try to control this fire and kron fours dan thorn is there for us live right now he has the very latest information dan whats what are you hearing. It was on that in just seen several Fire Departments still on scene here tonight along university as you mentioned we are actually between and shot at and know be a street where these fire crews continue to just pour water onto this construction building a number of Fire Departments out here. Theres also a number of shops and restaurants that are along the stretch and the power was just shut out not that that long by pg and e crews and i believe thats because all the water thats being dumped on this construction site its creating a small river a small flow of water just pushing down on the westbound direction along university here if you take a look at some of the video that we have from earlier today you can see the flames that were breaking out as you said around 5. 30 this afternoon, a number of crews having to respond to this scene we know that at at least 5 different Fire Departments had to from nearby that would be oaklandalameda albany and piedmont of course others are on scene including Berkeley Police department. This building we know of was about 7 stories and it was under construction. 2 buildings nearby on east side and also another 2 buildings on the west side of this construction site. I had to be evacuated earlier today weve a lot of smoke that was sort of pouring up through the sky i sort filling up the air here its still very evident at this moment right now as crews continue to battle this blaze, they dont have it under control right now widespread response really trying to get it under control right now you can definitely smell it through your mask you can definitely see that its its still in the air very active scene number of people out here on the street sort of looking at my ring whats been going on in terms of this going to be a pretty noisy night here for probably the foreseeable future. Crews still working to get everything under control of course at this time we dont know what the cause of this is of course fire investigators will be taking a look into but theres still a lot of work that needs to be done out here tonight. Jonathan justine. Dam you can see behind you the fire ladder looks like theyre still pouring water on it from above do still see active flames at this hour. If youre not seen any flames, its also pretty dark out here so the most of what youre going to see is probably the smoke that sort of billowing up from the construction there are crews as you mentioned there are working on it theyre coming in over the top so most likely trying to put out those hot spots that could be in the area of course theyre going to be drenching this scene as you can imagine with a construction site theres probably a lot of Flammable Materials that are laying around in terms you know that the siding and materials that they have to they have to use in order to put buildings together. But right now youre not seeing any flames at the moment, but you definitely are smoke. All right dan thorn live for us tonight and berkeley dan if you hear of any new information please let us know well stay on top of this for you. Throughout the night here on kron 4. Yeah lets take a look at your sierra forecast were not tracking any new snow showers in fact were noticing a lot of the snow still off the side of the road. But overall a very calm clear night out there for most of the sierra and thats going to continue for the next couple of days, South Lake Tahoe actually cooling down to 52 degrees and that cooling trend is going to continue monday into the friday is well were going to notice a very calm quiet seasonal weather pattern near average highs monday and tuesday and that trend is going to continue through your thanksgiving day as well so it is going to be great conditions for you heading up to the sierra but we could see some fresh powder riding next weekend with some fresh snow and even rain making its way to year but not until your next Holiday Weekend back to you to cnn jonathan alright marisa thank you tonight the United States has passed the latest in a series of grim milestones. And it is for the counties that are the most restrictive tier and you can see the map here showing us where we are as far as re openings and closings in entire state purple, well just say that means bad 41 counties in all represents more than 94 of californias population thats was in the purple tier sold about 90 minutes all non essential Work Movement in gatherings will be banned thats for the folks in the purple area there that includes. Us here in the bay area in the bay area that includes Sonoma Napa Solano contra costa alameda and santa clara counties. Morin in San Francisco along with san mateo counties are in the slightly less restrictive red tier, although San Francisco could see itself in the purple tier as early as tomorrow that new stay at home order once again kicks off 10 oclock tonight through 05 00am every day until december 21st this is all coming as we approach the holidays, the busiest travel time of the year troubles down a little bit but still its up from where it was. Next today, the spread of covid19 behind bars forcing state officials to release inmates early. Its heartbreaking. Its heartbreaking to see the impacts towards victims. And its unfortunate because cdcr has been unable to manage the spread of covid. Thousands of california inmates been released from prison early because of the pandemic its part of an effort to keep covid19 from spreading behind bars, but for one family, its the worst thing that could possibly mother yolo county is asking why this inmate. For years california has no longer believed in truth in sentencing Melinda Aiello if the assistant chief Deputy District Attorney for yolo county and does not have any connections to this case. Its heartbreaking its heartbreaking to see the impacts towards victims. And its unfortunate because cdcr has been unable to manage the spread of covid buffer egger shes heartbroken her daughter isnt close to making any significant recovery and the person responsible well be walking free over the last 3 years she has completely disassociated she did not know who i was she didnt know who she was weak, we need more advocacy like i said in the state for victims.
