So the numbers could get worse already at least 270 buildings or more have been destroyed. Well, were also following the latest who, as you can see from the air looking down at the destruction, its been incredible. One maui Restaurant Owner this morning says theres nothing left of the once bustling town of la hina, which is what youre looking at. Right now. The faa also now restricting airspace around behind a above it in the surrounding areas. There are still so much smoke up there right now. This is we know flights of the departing the island maui, bringing travelers and tourists that have told to leave the island back here to the bay area. Yeah, because they dont want dont want people there who are lucky enough, by the way to to be okay. Many of whom lost everything, though and some of them have been arriving in different flights this morning to San Francisco. Michael thomas is live at sfo. Theres also been canceled flights so you cant go to hawaii. Obviously. Lets talk about more about what hes learning firsthand this morning. Michael. Hi, good morning, everyone. Well, you know, its really a fluid situation. I mean, these flights that are coming in were not necessarily scheduled to come in at this time. Travelers tell me that its kind of just stop and go situation when theyre at the airport. Theyre being told that they may be able to switch from such as you know, united over the southwest. But there is a 19 fee. Lets go in video so we can talk about what things are looking like right now on the island. There. Travelers tell me some of the more stock for 30 hours either in the High School Gym in the area on the island, others were actually sitting in the airport the whole time. One woman tells me she was even stuck in her hotel room and that they were running out of food eventually at some point this morning, they knocked on her door and said, hey, weve got an open road that will get you to the airport. So her and another woman from england got in a car together. They travel to the airport, paid that 19 to switch from one Company Another and made it here back to the bay area. I spoke with another traveler who tells me that shes lives on the island. She says its going to take them at least a decade to get back to where they were not only economically, but even just structurally and take a listen to this woman that i spoke with news from the bay area that are right here this morning just after 06 00am. In the not an apartment place. I know you have a thing for the storm to calm down, but it got really bad. And then the ceiling started still rule starts to fly and then and you got their vacation so in the 5 minutes they put everything in and and then the that he saw the smoke. You know, and her story was really touching and tragic. She went on to tell me that her and her daughter and shes there with her whole family, but essentially where she had taken her daughter to get ice cream in the downtown area. She said after the win, they looked at it the next day. It was completely destroyed and she said chilly had about 45 minutes to gather herself for kids. Her belongings before the apartment that she had rented was just taken out completely. I mean, you heard her say that the brief was being torn off as she was in sight. Thankfully, they spent the night in the High School Gym in the following day at the airport before arriving here this morning. And she didnt even get to bring all of her belongings and the force of the back to the last thing that people are telling me from the last flight that just came in is that communication there to people staying on the island is very sparse. Theyre telling me that only communication that theyre able to really get is by radio. And even then its just it or miss because theres no signal theres no electricity and theyre really kind of just depending on each other of word of mouth of this is whats going on. This is where you should go. Thats a very latest here from sfo and what travelers are telling as they arrive here from ill send it back to and as youre at the airport, you know, to just reminds me so imagine, michael, youre at the airport there at the airport in maui. For 30 hours, they cant get in or out. Theres no food there. Theyre sleeping on the floor right in. Are families. Yeah, these are families. And in addition, one woman tells me that they once you get to the airport, they tell you, hey, you cannot leave after this certain time. And theyre only giving you limited amount of food. So, really, i mean, some of these people so many, you know, they havent slept in a bed showered or even a proper meal in going on 3 to 4 michael, thank you very much for that. Will continue following the latest out of hawaii here in the east bay. We had a fire as well. Nothing near as large, obviously. But this is a live look out of the port of oakland.
