But theyre hopeful that favorable weather conditions hold that will change this evening. Neighbors tell us they believe children playing with fireworks sparked the fire but calfire investigators say right now the cause is still under investigation. In gilroy, jesse gary, fox 2 news. And for the latest on what firefighters near gilroy are facing tonight. Lets go straight to bill martin. Hes in the Weather Center with the latest on the fire conditions. Definitely cooler today. Higher humidity. Not a lot of wind. The story with the fire for us has been air quality. Spare the air day after spare the air day. Not the best for running or even enjoying the day. Some people with respiratory issue noticing this. Heres whats happening. We have fires over toward, at least 15 big fires burning in the state. More than that actually 19. But most of the fires the big fires were up in this area. And the winds the last couple of days were more in this direction. So were getting a ton of smoke. Whats happening now, the wind you can see the surface winds going this way. So the smoke from the northern fires is going out of here. Thats why theres no spare the air day tomorrow. But some of these fires theres a few fires down not many though. Some of this smoke is going to make it into the area but it will not be as dense. It will not be as thick as it was this morning. On top of this wind flow we have wind flow coming from a tropical storm. You see it here and it has been depositing rain in parts of the bay area. North bay got some measurable rain. Some late showers up in Berkeley Hills area. Heres the diagram right now showing the fires. Some of the fires showing a thunderstorms right here. Showing also some showers and also wind flow. The smoke from these fires starting to clear out. Whats happening . Cooler, lessened fire danger. Thats how this week goes. Fire crews are making progress on the massive latuna fire. Officials warn that shifting winds could hamper that fire fight. So far the fire has burned more than 7,000 acres making it the largest fire by acreage in los angeles countys history. Three homes have now been lost. Right now Officials Say the fire is 30 contained but they expect the acreage will increase in the coming days. Still a lot of work to be done. Today we will continue cutting line around the entire perimeter of the fire. That means our firefighter hand crews will be out there clearing the brush down to clear mineral earth. They will be supported by fire engine companies. All evacuation orders in the area have now been lifted and freeways that had been shut down by the fire are reopened again. The fires burning in Northern California are causing another day of smoke filled skies in the bay area. I want to show you some pictures now from our cameras throughout the bay area. You can see smoke, smog and haze blanketing the area. Air quality Officials Say the smoky conditions as well as the past several days of temperatures over 100 degrees brought on another spare the air day today. Its the fifth straight day the bay area has been under a spare the air alert. Bart is no longer running trains at reduced speeds because of the reduced speeds. B. A. R. T. Reduced speeds so that p operators would have more time to react to any potentially abnormal conditions. Hundreds of Union Workers spent this labor day working for workers rights in oakland. Supporters say boosting pay will ripple through the work force. Its become an annual tradition. A rally outside the mcdonalds at 14th and jackson in oakland and a call to raise the minimum wage to 15 an hour. We cant really afford to pay our bills with one paycheck. Fifteen dollars for them is nothing. They can pay us 15 if they wanted us to stop with this tomorrow. Reporter in california the minimum wage will go up to 15 in 2022. But those here in this rally they say it cannot wait that long. In california or throughout the country. This is a chance to say were going to fight back. Reporter the people who showed off on their day off were of diverse backgrounds. Young and old, and even a billionaire environmental activist. Im here to stand up for people workers rights. America has been giving working people the shaft for about 40 years. Its absolutely unfair and its time for the tide to turn. And for working people to be treated fairly. Reporter the minimum wage in oakland is now 12. 50. We need to make sure workers are given a good wage. Were not there in our society. Fighting for working rights and protection. Reporter workers rallied in the south bay as well nearly 500 Union Members boarded buses this morning and protested around san jose. Silican valley needs unions due to the large number of corporations in the area. There were similar rallies across the country this one in chicago. The group says they specifically targeted mcdonalds as well as the American Hospital association. And in boston workers brought their families push baby trollers and carried signs. They too marched for better wages, union rights and for the passage of a medical bill. Ahead of an expected decision tomorrow on the Dreamers Program otherwise known as daca. The program was put in place by former president obama. The white house says a final decision hasnt been made but many people believe that the president tomorrow will call for ending the program with a six month delay which would give Congress Time to come up with an alternative. The texas state attorney general and others have pushed to terminate the program but the president and members of his staff are reportedly getting calls from republicans who are warning him that any effort to end daca could be politically unpopular. Many people around the bay area are uniting in their opposition to any plans that could rescind daca. California alone has 120,000 undocumented immigrants who have received work permits or protection from deportation since former president obama instituted daca about five years ago. At a labor day rally in oaklands frank ogawa plaza. I am the daughter of two immigrant workers who crossed mountains, jumped borders and walked deserts because they believed in a better life for me and my siblings. Reporter Cynthia Munoz told a sympathetic crowd that shes benefited from dac a. Ive been able to work and provide for my family and not worry about a potential deportation. Reporter President Trump is expected to announce tomorrow he will end protection for young immigrants who were brought illegally into the u. S. By their parents when they were children. That is going to leave some 750,000 people currently protected under daca vulnerable to deportation. Including munoz. I have my children here. I have my husband here, and we would organize and fight for my ability to stay in this country. This Political Science teacher at City College San francisco says any proposal to rescind daca is mean spirited. You take the children who came here when they were under aged to be making decisions by themselves. And then deciding that youre going to deport them to a place they dont even really know. That is, thats just not the america that we want to be. Californias senator Diane Feinstein tweeted support for Daca Recipients saying quote we have their backs hash tag here to stay. Tim cook tweeted 250 of my apple coworkers are dreamers. I stand with them. But not everyone is standing with them. The republican attorneys general of at least 10 states mostly in the south and midwest have threatened to sue the federal government if it does not eliminate daca. Some bay area Animal Rescue groups have stepped up to help overcrowded animal shelters in texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Last night a private plane packed full of cats and dogs landed in oakland. Ktvus tara moyarti tells, crews are flow busy trying to plan homes for pets. Packed with puppies. All the animals we extracted out of the Hurricane Harvey zone were animals that were part of the adoption system. Reporter they needed to make room for animals displaced by the floods. They called austin pets a live. Austin pets alive helped to evacuate close to 2,000 dogs and 1,000 cats within a three day period. Reporter bay area volunteers flew to texas in a private plane donated by sonoma based shelter. I feel like the whole community there was so grateful we had come. There were volunteers literally in tiers when we left. Literally in tears when we left. I have friends who were displaced in houston and im so far away. Police say they have caught the man who was attacked several women in San Francisco. Investigators say 19yearold augustin gasser followed several of the victims out of munni then attacked them. Sfpd released this video showing one of the attacks. Police say all of the attacks were unprovoked and all of them were against asian women. Theres no word on the conditions of the victims but one suffered a broken nose. Strong reactions pouring in after north koreas claim that it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb. Then it started to pour. This wind storm with hail just threw me from the beach all the way, dragged me by the boats to the fence where i had to holtd hold on to the fence. I could barely hold on because it was pushing me. There were things flying, kayaks, boats. Reporter she says her niece was injured by a flying object possibly a kayak or boat she was taken to the hospital. It just came out of nowhere within it happened within 20 seconds. Where all of a sudden it started raining and the wind came. Flipped over all the kayaks and the kayaks just blew 100 feet away from us in the air. Reporter bret was kayaking with his young son and wife. The entire group was tossed into the water. It was just a few minutes, it felt like hours. Im just glad everyone is fine and accounted for. You heard the woman saying it dragged me across the beach. How strong can it be. Microburst, theres big thunderstorms from strong con srebgtive conductive cells. All this air comes in and it gets very cold way up there. The air comes straight down as a rock. So cold air drops and it plummets and it can hit, it can go 100 miles per hour. It hits the ground then does this. And then runs. Spreads out yeah. Theres no clear warning for this. The guy said he didnt know it was coming. My son was down there in state street. Said it was sunny. There was a cumulous cloud behind. They probably didnt see it up behind the hill. As soon as it was over it was 90 degrees like it never happened. Ive never been in a microburst. But its not a horizontal wind its a vertical wind. You can see from the video how much stuff it threw around. When your 18yearold texts you, when hes on vacation without me. You know something is up. Yeah. So these are the highs from today. We may have microbursts around here too actually. We do actually we get them all the time. Thing is theyre not always in Populated Areas so you dont really know they happen. You may have experienced it and may not know what it was. They can fly to houses. Sometimes this is the system that produced that by the way. Sometimes microbursts get confused as tornadoes because that come in that same type of weather package. The weather is pummeling down.
