Now irma is making its move north and although its weakened, forecasters are still very concerned about the storm surge, and some areas could get up to 15 feet of water. Officials are urging residents to stay off the streets. My biggest concern is when people fail to heed a warning early from local government officials and then make a last minute ditch to try and get to a shelter. I would say dont come out of your house until the sun is up and you can clearly see. Over 100,000 people are taking refuge in nearly 500 shelters across the state. First one this morning in the 9 00 hour toward the florida keys as a category 3 hurricane packen winds of 130 Miles Per Hour, and then moving up to the second land fall close to marco island about 3 35 eastern time, and this hurricane has been steadily moved off the west coast of florida. A lot of storm reports as well. Some tornadoes, thats the little red circles there, and the storm his honor cons the big and the storm continues to be a big threat. The track has been changing quite a bit. Well get to that in a bit, but the bright colors indicator skate the highest indicate the highest water levels continuing to push on shore. You still have the on shore winds transporting the water, and that will be a problem with the flooding concerns into monday. Heres the forecast track, and this horn continues to move to the north and weaken gradually. Theres the forecasted position in the morning. 8 00, barely a hurricane with winds of 75 Miles Per Hour, and the north ward track continues, probably by tomorrow night this should be a Tropical Storm packing winds of right around 50 Miles Per Hour in this portion of georgia toward alabama as well as the system moves out to the north. Rain fall, these are just 24 hour totals, not the storm totals, but the numbers adding up. Over 14 inches of rain fall, and probably higher amounts as well. John admits there were some tense moments when the eye made land fall this morning, but he feels fortunate he made it through one of the most powerful storms in florida history and hes eager to get back to work. The winds were up there. I it wouldnt check on a friends house, and there were trees and signs down everywhere. Were used to the high flooding, so the surge wasnt that bad. Ill have to go to the office and catch up on work. I have a lot to get done because we had a couple of days off. Hopefully the office has power. Im seeing some buildings start to go up already, theyre working on getting the power back. The wind starting to go off pushing the water out, so the buildings that were flooded are starting to push back into the ocean. He says hes optimistic about Recovery Efforts and he expects the power to be back on in his home later tonight or tomorrow. Many people riding out the storm turned the social media to post videos and images. Some are saying winds were so strong they broke windows. Others sent messages like praying for florida. As we told you more than 3 Million People lost power in south florida and a group is ready to help here in the flood zone. The ceo of florida and power and light was out there, and employees including line workers and Equipment Operators are standing by to help with power issues. Its part of the mutual aid agreement with Florida Power and light. And a task force is hunkering down in orlando waiting for the storm to pass. They relocated from georgia to the Orlando Convention center. Task force groups from los angeles and colorado are also at the same location. They have room to fit large emergency vehicles and equipment including 35 helicopters. Hurricane irma is expected to pass orlando some time monday morning. And more than 80 search and rescue workers from the bay area are offering their help in florida. Tonight task force 3 posted a photo showing 30 rescuers already arriving in florida. Another group of the task force left early this morning. The meanwhile most if not all major airports in florida are stilled closed. Miami international shut done before the storm. Down before the storm. Theyll be closed monday, and could resume limited operations on tuesday. It advises to look for updates on its official twitter page. The orlando tweeted this. New at 10 00, San Francisco firefighters are mourning the sudden death of one of their battalion chiefs. He died while at work this morning. Fellow firefighters found the 26 year veteran unresponsive to his office. The medical examiner will determine the exact cause of his death, but the Department Says it at peers to be medical in it appears to be medical in nature. He spent of his career with the San Francisco Fire Department, and they were with him when he died. Reporter flags are at half staff for the chief terry smirtle. He was found responsive after returning from an Early Morning fire call. It appears he died of natural causes. It was devastating just the scale of the flooding, and it wasnt just parts of town under water, but the majority of the town. He says he also saw amazing support from the community as they helped one another in the wake of the storm. They helped save 113 people from flooding. As funerals begin for the victims for last weeks massive earthquake in mexico, the death toll has risen to 90. The powerful quake struck off the Southern Coast of mexico. More than 30 of the People Killed by the quake are from a small coastal town near the epicenter. Weve been waiting all night for this last band that was allegedly coming our way, but were finding out now according to radar that it looks like the tail end of Hurricane Irma actually dissipated on us, so were not really expecting anymore fierce winds or rain which is obviously a good sign, and at one point here i was standing in hip deep water. The water now behind me and all around me as dissipated. One interesting thing is if i walk over here, i just saw it a moment ago, here we go, debris is starting to wash up on the sidewalk, and this actually is a piece of glass from one of the giant panes of glass off one of these buildings, and this is exactly why they tell you to stay indoors during the height of the hurricane. This obviously, although as small as it maybe, becomes a deadly projectile, and flays is washed up glass is washed up all around us which is interesting to see. Obviously the water is becoming quickly contaminated with sewage and other, you know, things that you dont want to be widing through, so definitely not wading through, so definitely not a good idea. A good reminder is most people dont actually die during the storms and hurricanes, they die afterwards when they think its okay to come out and its not safe yet. They have a curfew from 7 00 p. M. To 7 00 a. M. , and the miami School Superintendent came out and said kids, no school, not just tomorrow but for the foreseeable future due to the damage to the greater miami area. In addition, miamis International Airport saying theyll not reopen tomorrow. Theres a chance they could reopen tuesday with just limited flights. And talk about the process of trying to return to normal. We see some lights on behind you. I understand parts of city do have power. Weve been reporting that one out of three people in florida evacuated, and theyll billion, a, the get back home, so in miami be anxious to get back home, so in in miami itself when do things start to tilt back toward normal . Reporter i mean the honest answer this evening is that no one really knows. Well have to wait for the sun to come up tomorrow. Theres word that the florida keys were absolutely just designated. Again, well need sunrise to look and assess that. The same out west. Marco island and naples were battered so hard, and authorities wont let people go back to their homes quite yet. This part of town, there was a lot of water, but its receded. Hopefully sooner than later they will allow residence didnts back into their residents back into their homes, but right now its still anyones guess. And did you see that flooding start to come with that, do you believe the storm surge when you were seeing the flooding because you went through the wind first . What was it like actually going through that . Reporter great question, im glad you asked. So last night we were really in the thick of it. We had gusts well over 100 Miles Per Hour. We saw water overflowing the banks of the bay. There was a combination of storm surge and bucket offense rain falling on us. You had the salty sea water taste in your mouth, so it was bay water spined with rain water, and the flooding gets deeper behind me, but this is nothing compared to what it was. Its starting to dry up, and will dry up in the florida sun tomorrow. Well, looks like things are finally starting to dry out in miami. The northern part of miami its still a different story with the hurricane still going that way, but hopefully over time things will get better. Thank you some for your time. We appreciate it. Earlier Vice President pence said irma was a storm of epic and historic proportions. He stopped by fema headquarters and offered support. Were with you. Wherever Hurricane Irma goes, well be there first. Floridas gulf coast hasnt taken a direct hit from a hurricane since 1921. Millions evacuated ahead of irma, but some refused to leave. A condo owner, carl roberts, on a strip of land in tampa stocked up on hamburger, sandwiches and liquor. Im not that worried about it because the hurricane damage is primarily water rising, and im on the 17th floor. I have security shutters i can put down when the wind gets high, so i should be quite safe here. Roberts said if the storm got worse than expected he could seek refuge in the basement. One family from the sacramento area is back home after an incredible ordeal tied to irma. Reporter tens of thousands of cars trying to escape florida last week, and among them this family from roseville who set out on a road trip, trying to get to atlanta to escape Hurricane Irma. As an adventurous family, a little chaos is not out of the normal, but when a 7 hour trip turns into 17 hours puts everyone on edge. Their Disney Cruise turned around early to miss the storm. They had to drive. The airport was shut down, we had to find another way. Thats when we went into operation get out of town. Reporter so karen, dean, dakota, avery, and taylor piled into a van. There are no cars, we were lucky to have this car, you have to take what you can get. Reporter and became the poster family for the phrase pack your patience. The concept began in russia in 2005. In africa its a crowd source 911 system. Its fascinating. They have a big crime problem, not enough police, so they built this ground upset of volunteers. Reporter its like a walkie talkie. But they didnt anticipate when disaster strikes a twoway radio style app can be effective. It will work in a 2g network when nothing else will. Reporter but the stories, hearing them live, you hear the kids with the dog and theyve been crying, and they cheer. Yeah, you hear the boat driver ecstatic. Reporter he emphasizes its a tool, not the solution. Its for volunteers on the ground doing the real work. It helped make it possible for citizens to participate in help in a way they never could before, so were thrilled to be a part of that. And of course Hurricane Irma the big weather story all week long. Its interesting to track this over the past few days. Just going back two days this was once a category 5 hurricane close to cuba, and then a 4 and a 3, and it will continue to weaken, but still a major storm, and the main impacts tomorrow, at least the effects well see tomorrow in the sunlight. As far as current winds, around 100 Miles Per Hour moving north at 14. A lot of weather stations no longer operational. A lot of blank reports for naples, miami, key west. Toward orlando though, thats a gust up to 76 Miles Per Hour. The storm is weakening, but Still Producing strong wind. Back in the bay area, a lot of clouds. Look at the activity to our south. Quite a bit of thunderstorm activity. Look at all the lightning strikes. If we tally them, its showing 266 lightning strikes. Its to the south of bay area, but we cant rule out scattered thunderstorms in the monday forecast. Still mild for sunday night. San jose 79, concord 83, santa rosa mid70s, and fogfree tonight. Just some scattered high clouds. It will continue to feel muggy. Today the warmest and hottest day of the week. Well greet this area of low pressure down toward southern california. Tomorrow a few clouds, it will the feel humid, and youll notice the change for tomorrow. We bring in a chance of scattered showers, but theres a chance of a pop up shower or thunderstorm favoring the south and east bays. So here we are tomorrow at 12 00, showing you scattered clouds out there, and look what happens tomorrow night, 9 00. Showers, the possibility of thunderstorms rotating through the bay area, and still a chance tuesday into wednesday morning.
