He was surfing last month near ocean beach when an accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. He couldnt move arms or legs but today that doctor is walking and tells us about his incredible recovery. Our ktvus south bay reporter jesse gary has his story. Reporter sometimes the smallest steps cross the greatest distances. In a san jose rehab facility, dr. Matt is taking his first steps towards his future. Those first steps were joyful. And i dont say that word often, but it was a deep feeling of joy. Reporter that newfound joy comes after a colossal spinal cord injury that turned this Valley Medical Center emergency room doctor into a patient at the hospital. When matt came into the hospital, he had the most severe spinal cord injury imaginable. He was unable to move his arms and legs. Reporter his brush with being a quadriplegic happened november 15th while riding waves at ocean beach. But one wave slammed him head first into shallow waters, breaking his neck on the ocean floor. Matt says he lost about two days of memory after the accident. But one of few things he does remember is lying face down in the cold ocean water unable to move fearing he was going to die and screaming as loud as he could, perhaps an act of desperation. A friend says that scream was a call to action to the planet. Apparently, it worked. Another surfer and an icu nurse saw his body and pulled him from the ocean. Another passerby a doctor started cpr to keep him alive for the trip to zuckerberg San Francisco general hospital. Once there, neurosurgeons performed ultraearly surgery, fusing metal rods to five vertebrae while at the same time micromanaging blood flow to his spinal cord. The theoretical approach was successful and is now a template for treating spinal cord injuries. We have been able to disprove the notion that spinal cord injuries are permanent and irreversible. Matt is yet another example of somebody who shouldnt have recovered but he did. Reporter he now spends five hours a day on therapy to learn the basics, sitting, standing, playing catch. Specialized equipment accelerates the learning curve. We have been amazed how much recovery he had since i came here. Reporter doctors say his prognosis is good and he could return to work in the emergency room sometime in the new year. Reporter in san jose, im jesse gary, ktvu fox 2 news. He is incredibly lucky. Thats amazing. What are the chances there would be an i cu nurse there on the beach and a doctor would be passing by. He is a doctor, too. Yeah. Lets talk about the weather now, bring in our meteorologist mark tamayo in for bill. You surf a lot just like bill. Is that common where a wave would just slam you down like that . Yes. Its based on the tides and well, theres a lot of energy especially on ocean beach, it could be focused on one spot. When you have the pool of people out there that can help out rapidly, that happens quite a bit when you need help out at the beach. Its a nice story to see. Hopefully, we wish the doctor best of luck with the continued recovery. Our weather today, we have this. Mostly clear skies, a few high clouds increasing throughout the afternoon. Look at this.
