Tsunami watch has been canceled however city authorities worn that our shoreline, our harbors , the inlets, they could still have some dangerous and unpredictable currents today. They say you should stay away from the coastlines for the next 12 hours. Early this morning the San Francisco department of Emergency Management tweeted People Living within three blocks of the Pacific Coast or five blocks of San Francisco bay should prepare to evacuate. The original tsunami warning was for the original california coast down to the mexican border. A more serious watch was is good for alaska and British Columbia. You are seeing video from kodiak alaska. This anomaly may appear as water moving rapidly out to sea, a gentle rising tide like a flood. A series of breaking free waves or a frothy wall of water. A person caught me drown or be crushed by debris or be swept out to sea. Its advised if there is a tsunami to head to Higher Ground or head inland. Hours tsunami watch has been canceled. We did talk to the coast guard this morning. They said at the time they were observing the water. He did have boats on standby and were standing sending out radio signals. City Authorities Say we may be getting stronger and more dangerous currents coming to the california coast. Its advised to stay away from the shoreline, harbors and inlets for the next 12 hours. Thank you. The watch has been called off this morning. Bryan garcia with the National WeatherService Joins us with more on what we will likely be tracking. A tsunami in the gulf. Adoree. I am tired. We feel your pain. We had a warning and now its a watch. What should folks in california, especially in the bay area, be worried about . Let me first clarify. We were under a tsunami watch only today. It was just a tsunami watch and now we have been downgraded to nothing. We are not expecting any significant tsunami amplitude coming into the coast of california today. The warning was only for alaska and British Columbia in canada. And an advisory was out actually, there was no advisory out. The warning for alaska in canada has been downgraded to an advisory. What can we expect for california . We will still see a very small, when i say small im talking about a couple inches, of a tsunami wave coming through. The main issue with that at this point will be enhanced currents around the area through places like the golden gate. People on the water this morning whether on boats or kayaks or swimming or surfing, they may experience more current than normal. Its an interesting process to go through as we watch and learn about the faultlines are tectonic plates that caused the tsunamis. In terms of these Warning Systems and how they are set up and how they are supposed to work to warn people, did everything work as it should have . Yes. Everything worked as it should have. Of course there are always Lessons Learned in any circumstance, even when everything goes right. We went to pick up on what we can do better. We will look at that over the next couple of weeks and determine where we can increase our timeliness and messaging to our Media Partners and the public and the Emergency Management partners. We will look at how we message things and we will also look at the website with the subNational TsunamiWarning Center. It became quickly overloaded with people visiting and how can we make that more robust. This was a goodsized earthquake come was that not . How about folks in the gulf of alaska, what they see a good wave coming their way . Its actually an interesting earthquake. The original manga to the cayman was eight point two. It ended up being a 7. 9 earthquake. It was actually south of what we called the subduction zone. Instead of a thrust fault where you would get a strong displacement of water in the vertical, this was on a strike slip faults. Something like the he would or san andreas where it moves laterally against one another as opposed to vertically. With that, it limits the size of any tsunami that could potentially be generated. That said, they are experiencing tsunami waves in alaska but the highest weve seen so far have only been 0. 7 feet. Nothing significant but they are seeing amplitude coming to the coastline. We spoke to the National TsunamiWarning Center about the different is between the different kinds of faultlines and which generate the bigger tsunamis as in the japan quake and the damage that tsunami caused. In terms of what we face and other earthquakes, do we have the potential, if its a different fault line, a really seeing more significant damage than what we saw today . Yes. Anytime we see a large earthquake happened the first question always is, apart from the magnitude, is the depth and what fault did it happen on. When we look at subduction zones come to thrust faults where it displaces vertical, those of the most concerning ones. For our area, we are looking at the subduction zone that runs along the central aleutian chain in alaska. That would be the most devastating tsunami generating region for us. But we are also looking around the entire Pacific Basin and around the ring of fire and the subduction zone that circles the pacific for any earthquake that occurs. Bryan garcia, National Weather service, thank you for getting up and thank you for the information. The San Francisco board of supervisors is scheduled to vote on whether to name an interim mayor.
