We start with developing in us from Southern California where the investigation is underway in the shooting death of a chp officer an a Southern California freeway. He had pulled over a pickup truck just off the 215 in river riverside. Investigators say that the driver went back to his truck, grabbed a rifle and started shooting. The officer was able to radio for help. Three officers arrived, the officer was killed and two of the other officers were injured. Riverside county sheriffs deputies and Riverside Police responded to the call for help and shut down the freeway. Now the two injured officer its officers and the suspect were taken to a hospital where the gunman died. One of the officer is still in critical. The others being treated for less serious injuries it. May take days to do through all of the radio transmissions and the body camera video and create a detailed timeline of what happened. They wan know why the suspect started shooting. It was a long and horrible gun battle. It results in a very extensive crime scene. Here is what we dont know. We dont know where the suspect was coming from, where he was heads to, what his associations are. The family of the officer said that he had been with the chp four years. The governor issued a statement saying that jennifer and i extend our sympathies to the family, friends and fellow officers grieving the tragic loss of the officer. He will be remembered for his commitment to serving the Riverside County community and the people of california. This morning work crews are trying to clear a large tree that came down and took out power lines in the Oakland Hills. Want to go to sarah where pg e crews trying to restore the service. What we believe happened is one tree fell and took down a lot of brush and vegetation and some smaller trees. The road is blocked off. You can see power cables, phone lines down in this area. A mess out here. The Oakland Fire Department said the tree fell at 11 50 last night. When it fell it took downpour, cable and phone lines with it. A pg e outage map shows 25 people are without power on fernwood. The website estimates sometime for power to be restored at nine. Crews here say it could be much later. Pg e worked to ground the power lines so they arent a threat to anyone else. Tree trimmers did just show up here right now to get the job done and their job is just to clean up the tree and get it away from the road so pg e can continue their efforts. That vigil scheduled from 5 30 to 7 00 p. M. Tonight. A friend of the dayton, ohio gunman is facing up to 15 years in prison in connection with that mass shooting. He is accused of lying on federal gun purchase forms and also possessing a gun while on drugs. Investigators say that he bought the body armor and the ammunition that the gunman used in that attack. Nine people were killed, 27 others were hurt. Anyone who is discovered to have any criminal responsibility for any act that ultimately is found through the investigation or contributed to the events on august 4th is going to be held responsible. Now investigators say that he did have a marijuana charge on his record and that he never disclosed it on the gun purchase forms. Gun Rights Groups promising to challenge a proposal by the san jose mayor to require gun owners carry liability insurance. It would be the first of its kind in the country.
