I am sorry. We were next to willow glenn, river glenn here in san jose. Were just waiting, standing by for those students and teachers to come here. The sun is officially up on the first day of the new school year and it will be in under two hours. Its calm and quiet here right now. Were waiting for everyone to rush to campus and get the year started. There are 40 other schools in the district and they have their first days today, too. 30,000 students will head back to the classroom this morning after a couple of months off for summer break. And there will be, of course, be a lot of traffic around river glenn. The district wants to make sure you Pay Attention to specific pickup and dropoff areas and that applies to any school youre heading to today. Something new this year, san jose unified launched a new program called rise into special education. And teachers can get a special education credential at san jose state for free as long as they commit to working in the district for four years. There are 3500 students in the district eligible for special Education Services. The strict said that number continues to rise, along with the need for those specialized features, despite an overall drop in enrollment. I did it for a few reasons. One, we have more students qualifying for special education support. The other, were seeing a decline in the number of individuals qualified to teach special education. There is seven teachers enrolled and the bell rings in under two hours and were waiting for the excitement to start. In san jose this morning. And south bay parents are upset after the Charter School they were planning to send their students to didnt open the second year in a row. Promise academy is a small Free Public School in san jose. School administrators said it was supposed to open monday with 96 students enrolled. But a week ago, the San Jose Unified School district informed them they would not be able to use classes in south san jose as initially planned. The district leaders disagree and said theyre being made a scapegoat. As a mom, i have been working to help create this school and have a place for my children to remain for the next few years, and we had everything set. We had our Perfect School and its been extremely emotional. Raised concerns with them throughout the process about uncertain enrollment numbers, who they will be able too execute their agreement. They didnt share that information with families. We wish they did. Promise academy filed a second lawsuit against the district. And our our time is 7 06. The San Francisco school distribute will work on a plan to cover up a controversial mural at George Washington high school. Youre trying to wipe out american history. Dont do it. Leave the mural alone. It tells the whole truth about mr. Washington being complicit in the slave trade. The school board voted to preserve that mural, but cover it up. During a contentious Board Meeting yesterday, the art work shows George Washington as a slave owner as well as you can see native americans being oppressed. Defenders of the mural said its a teaching tool but the teachers say the images are cruel to students of color. I am a great, great granddaughter of a slave. I dont need a mural in my school or office to remind me im eye slave. I dont get why people are standing up for this, you know. There are black and brown boys dieing. Yesterdays vote was a close one, 43. That mural is not expected to be covered up this year. Police are investigating overnight gun fire in contra costa county, happening around 1 00 a. M. Near california street in rodeo. The crews have seen bullet holes in cars and homes and more than a dozen evidence markers on the street. The warrants were issued in may. The police were trying to learn how carmandy obtained a release report surrounding the death of the San Francisco public defender. The affidavit said he is a free lance videographer. A judge signed off on the warrant despite California Law that protects journalists from revealing sources to police. The California Supreme Court is tightening up the standards for when police can so much someones home and ruled that officers can only enter the home with a warrant or emergency. Until law, lap. Could justify getting into a home to help a lost child or help someone that needed assistance. Officers can only enter with a warrant when swift action is needed. New this morning, operations are returning to normal at the hong kong airport following two days of clashes between police and pro democracy activists. Forty demonstrators are camped out at the airports arrival area. Several dozen flights were cancelled today. The airport, though, is currently opened, planes are departing and landing. The airports it has an interim court order to keep protestors from illegally blocking or interfering with operations. The violence on monday and tuesday grounded more than 300 flights. If you know where he is or have information on his whereabouts, please call police. And in San Francisco, a homeless man was arrested and in connection with a weekend attack on a woman. Look at the security video shing this happening at the door of the womans condo building on beal street saturday night. The suspect identified as austin vincent. The woman said he appeared to be mentally ill or under the influence of drugs. He kept telling her he was trying to save her and was demanding her money, keys and phone. Neighbors are really concerned out there because there is a 200bed Navigation Center for the homeless being built right now. Right next door to that condo complex. This is mental illness. This is drug issues and this is security and the city is irresponsible and theyre putting our life at risk. They kept saying these people are safe, theyre harmless. You have proper resources. Now, the Mayors Office released a statement saying it supported the Navigation Center but added allowing people to continue to remain on the streets without providing resources only makes the challenges we face more severe. And lawmakers raising concerns about facial recognize technology. An assemblyman introduced the bill to ban the use of facial recognize software. The aclu tested the software by running pictures of all 120 state legislator against a mug database and the aclu found 26 false matches. My picture is right here. The police are not using this tool to spy on people but as a means to identify criminals and reduce the criminal element in our community. The crash you see is westbound 80 at the the pablo dam road and is slow going. Now were getting a new report of a crash before the toll plaza involving a big rig and another vehicle, blocking the middle lane where the had, on, v lane starts and well try to turn the the hov lane starts and well try to turn the camera around. And this is bumped up, taking you about 40 minutes to make the drive. And that is because of a lot of stopandgo traffic and congestion along the east shore freeway. This action comes as operations return to normal at the hong kong airport follow twoing days of intense clashes between police and pro democracy activists. For two days, the hong kong airport was shut down, starting last night, some flights began to come through. Arrivals and departures start started getting back closer to normal. We can see here a tense situation. The officers suited up in riot gear, protestors are on the scene. At this point, the airport is still open, from what we know, but we dont know what the situation is at this moment inside the airport building. Were monitor regular that as well. The airport said they have a court order to keep protestors from blocking or interfering with the operations. Well monitor what is happening outside and inside of the hoping cong airport as police are facetoface with protestors there. Here at home and in oakland, more than 200 people attended a vigil in oakland, copping for an end to gun violence. It was by congresswoman barbara lee. She will reenstate a push on gun bans.
