There was a crash, 580 near grant line road but not causing any injuries but we have had slow traffic. We also have some slow traffic approaching a car fire on 580 near shafer ranch which is basically a little west of the foothill. You will see slow traffic at the dublin interchange because of that. You can see the rest of the drive over to 880 looks good and here is 880 in front of the oakland coliseum. The bay bridge is still not a big backup. It looks like it may be lighter than usual. Its 5 03 am. Derrick almena, the defendant in oaklands ghost ship warehouse fire case is expected in court this morning. His First Court Appearance since the mistrial was declared in the case. Elissa harrington is outside the courthouse in oakland and you have more on this. Report determined whether they want to retry almena, work out a plea deal or just dismiss all charges. Meanwhile his attorneys are trying to reduce his bail in an effort to get almena released. His attorneys argue that he would pose no harm if released. He would live with his family and lake county and they say he is not a flight risk. A judge today can decide whether to grant that request and reduce bail or keep it what it is now which is 750,000. Almena spoke exclusively with ktvu from santa rita jail in dublin where he felt confident no jury would ever convict him. They are never going to find 12 people to send me to prison for the rest of my life. This always going to be at least one that says, no way. Especially now with everything thats coming out. Reporter almena was charged with 36 counts of involuntary through the converted warehouse killing people who were there for a music party on the night of december 2, 2016. A rally in oakland for Traffic Safety outside Oakwood Elementary School very hitand run killed a 45yearold woman and injured a fouryearold. Teachers, parents, students at Garfield Elementary will be marching at 8 am, calling for safety on foothill boulevard. A woman was walking her four yearold niece home from prek at the school on tuesday when they were hit by a car at. The driver is still out there on the loose. And the police are offering a reward for help leading to an arrest. And San Francisco, District Attorney George Gascon is resigning. He told his staff he will leave his post in two weeks and will move to los angeles to explore a run for District Attorney. Last year he announced he was not seeking reelection so he could care for his elderly mother. Next month the voters will go to the polls to select his replacements. Ktvu has learned from several sources that mayor london breed could appoint suzy loftus as a temporary replacement for gascon until the next da is seated. She is one of four candidates in the race for District Attorney replacing gascon now could give her campaign a boost ahead of the election. That election is just one month away on november 5. Gascon s resignation was met with a fiery statement from the San Francisco Police Officers association. The letter said , quote, we are praying for the residents of los angeles hoping that George Gascon does not do to their city what he did to San Francisco during his tenure. The association cited his push number of crimes from felonies to misdemeanors. The poa went on to blame mireya orta a criminal justice revolving door and double digit increases in crime. The closing line and a letter about the resignation was, good riddance. Police in richmond looking for suspects and a triple shooting were two people were killed and a third is in the hospital. This happened in richmond yesterday afternoon at 31st and is meant and what is known as the north and east neighborhood. Police say the three victims were in a parked car. A gunman either walked up or drove up and started shooting. Police went door to door looking for witnesses trying to get information and say they still do not know if more than one person is responsible. One man told us that one of the two young men killed is his nephew. 32yearold, vineet maharaj, of richmond. It appears he was with two friends when they were shot. The man said he has no idea why anyone would want to hurt his nephew. I real probably something to do with friends. I dont know. And this hurts. It really does. I dont know what to say. Im kind of shocked myself. Police say the wanded victim is in stable condition. They are also asking anyone who has any information to call richmond police. In ecuador the president has declared a state of emergency as demonstrators have been holding violent protests calling for economic reform. The protests have caused major disruption to public transportation. This anger stands stems from the president s decision to stop providing fuel subsidies think the cost too much. Diesel and gas prices are now expected to more than double across the country. Yesterday protesters set fires in the streets and drivers blocked roads and bridges. The president issued the emergency order to deploy armed forces to maintain order. Also tohong kong leader carrie lam is banning masks as she deploys Emergency Powers to shutdown antigovernment protests. She said she is not declaring an emergency in hong kong with the city faces extensive and very serious danger. After an increase in violence. President trump is also suggesting that china investigate the business dealings of joe bidens son, hunter. China should start an investigation into the bidens. Democratic president ial candidates joe biden, Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris are now calling on the white house to release the transcript of a phone call between President Trumps and the president of china back in june where the president reportedly talked about those both joe biden and elizabeth moore. We are also hearing about another whistleblower complaint. The Washington Post said an irs official reported an attempt to improperly interfere with the annual audit of the tax returns of the president or Vice President. The Washington Post says the person who tried to interfere was a political appointee at the treasury department. The whistleblower complaint was filed back in july. The Trump Administration has dismissed that claim. Reports out of washington indicate that Energy Secretary rick perry will leave his cabinet post by the end of next month. He ran for president in 2012 and 2016 and then joined the Trump Administration in 2017. He was also the longestserving governor of texas and is one of the longer serving numbers of President Trumps cabinet but perry was recently caught in the ukraine case because he led the american delegation to the inauguration of ukraines new leader last may. New information about people who died yesterday morning when he wrongway driver hit a taxi near Candlestick Point on highway 101 and palm avenue. The chp said a woman driving while intoxicated was going southbound in the northbound lanes and crashed into the taxi had on. Killing herself, the taxi driver and two taxi passengers. Fellow cabdrivers, said driver, Berkant Ramadan Ahmed comment leaves behind a wife and children. He has a young daughter so our hearts go out for him. I hope his family is okay. The chp identified the wrong way driver as a 34yearold emilie ross of hillsborough. The two taxi passengers were 57 yearold mary miller of chicago and 62yearold Judson Bergman of barrington, illinois. Luggage was found at the scene indicating they may have been coming from sfo. The chp said so far this year there have been 25 runway collisions resulting in 19 deaths in the bay area alone. Caltrans says its working with uc davis to try to prevent future crashes. In parts of sacramento and san diego they have installed signs with l. E. D. Lights that flash when a driver is heading in the wrong direction. They are also using cameras to monitor exit ramps. We are taking film of people who get on the offramp, trying to get onto the freeway and we want to see if they are turning around or if they do, what do they see when they turn around. Officers have inspected on and off ramps throughout the bay area and say the primary cause of most accidents is drinking and driving. Federal Health Officials say the number of deaths from a lung disease o vaping has climbed to 19 in this country. The deaths have occurred in 15 states including here in california which has two confirmed deaths. 275 new cases were reported in just the past week bringing the total number of illnesses to more than 1000. Health officials are repeating their recommendation that you refrain from using any e cigarettes or any vaping products until more is known about this mysterious breeding disease. According to doctors at the mayo clinic, the lung damage in the vaping patients resembles a chemical burn. They say the injuries look like those seen in people who have been exposed to mustard gas. The coast guard lieutenant accused of plotting a domestic terrorist attack pleading guilty to four counts of weapons and drug charges. Christopher hasson of Silver Spring maryland facing a maximum of 31 years in federal prison. He is due to be sentenced in january. He is a selfproclaimed white nationalist. Prosecutors say he had a hit list that included prominent Democratic Political figures as well as several journalists. Federal authorities are warning Law Enforcement agencies about several threatening social media posts related to the new movie, the joker. An anonymous officials said a joint fbi and Homeland Security bulletin was issued out of an abundance of caution. But there are no specifics or credible threat against a particular venue. There have been concerns about that movies portrayal of graphic and random violence. And some people worry about copycat attacks or even violence in theaters. Mgm resorts has agreed to pay 800 million to victims of the 2017 las vegas mass shooting. Mgm owns people. Hundreds of survivors and the families of those killed sued mgm claiming the hotel failed to prevent the shooter from bringing more than 20 assault rifles into his room. The 800 million is to resolve those claims. An independent Party Approved by a judge will review each claim before deciding how much each person will receive. Two local women who survived that mass shooting two years ago say accountability is important but helping survivors matters most. We first met friends, kim schubert and jennifer mcgrath, days after the shooting when they describe the violence and cannot believe they survived. Two years later they say the trauma has only deepened because the initial shock has i still working through their memories. When i was seeing people in wheelbarrows my thought was, where did the wheelbarrow come from . Not why is there a body in it. My mind cannot process that. A big part of me was left on that field. The women also got matching tattoos to express their strength and determination after surviving such an experience. After the mass shooting at the gilroy garlic festival, city officials are now considering hosting a gun buyback event. It was requested by people in the community and the Gilroy Police chief supports the idea. Supporter save a gun buyback event would be positive and help heal in gilroy after the tragedy. The gilroy dispatch newspaper reports the city staff is checking on how much it would cost to hold such an event. Its been one year since a man died after being tased by family and friends gathered last night to remember chinedu okobi. It was a joy to know someone so warm and compassionate. People gathered in millbrae yesterday at the same spot where okobi was confronted by deputies say they tried talking to him because he was walking in and out of traffic on the busy road.
