Wildfire prepared this week, warning about a challenging fire season is of a lack of late season rain and dry vegetation. We are joined by the division chief, jonathan cox. Good to see you here. This is a unique challenge, this pandemic poses for your cruise. How is the coronavirus going to change how you fight the virus . I dont think we have jonathan. Jonathan, can you hear me . I can hear you alex yes. Jonathan if you didnt hear the question. I was curious about the unique for cal fire. How is the coronavirus outbreak change the way you fight fires . Weve already started the way we prepare for the fire season in a way weve never done before. We we started bringing them in smaller groups so we could maintain that how do we be sure the firefighters are working six feet of part and if they get hard how do we greet firefighters when we have hundreds of thousands of firefighters together and then we have to feed them all. Yes you have hundreds and thousands of firefighters all responding. Typically one large base camp, sleeping in the same area or eating in the same area. It seems like it will be tough to distance those crews out. Are you looking at the possibility of multiple camps . Yes absolutely. We have a working group at the Department Level looking at that. How many base camps will we need . Our ratio for the amount of lodging and facilities we need is going to be blown out of the water because now we have to have a six foot separation. Thats taking place on a statewide level. There will also be implications that we will have a mass evacuation. We dont want to set up at Evacuation Center where we have hundreds of thousands of members of the public who might be vulnerable. This pandemic although it has immediate impact, we are concerned about the longterm. We are also looking at the possibility if the second wave occurs, what will it look like if it comes in the peak of fire season . This time right now so many people are staying at home, i know you say its a great time to look around your house and prepare yourself for the possibility of a wildfire and the possibility to evacuate here. What is your best advice that you give to people especially in those fire prone areas on how to prepare . Especially given the crisis we are all facing . One importunate thing, fire season does not wait for anything and that includes the pandemic. We are taking the time now to create our plan. Beautification is not allowed but clearing the visitation around your house. Given a point of reference, were looking at 2017 2018 fire season, we had large destructive fires. Unfortunately, the way things are lining with the rain file fall, its not a good year. Weve been fortunate we have not seen any major fires just yet. Only a matter of time, unfortunately. Best of luck to you always good to see you. It division chief, jonathan, take care of yourself thank you. New housing is available in covid19. A San Francisco doctor and researcher things he may have found one. He is featured in a net flicks documentary, pandemic and he founded the biotech firm. Joining us now is this engineer. Thank you for being here. First off, explain exactly it is what you do. Thank you for having me. The name is definitely a mouthful. But if you look at biology in the 21st century there is so much data out there and we need a good toolset to gain a better insight on how these work. It primarily focuses on tools to optimize antibodies beyond what we could do in the lab and what we observe in nature. Tell me how you are applying all of this to covid19 and how this potential treatment might work. Great question. What we did is we piggybacked off years of research after the sars outbreak in 2003. Multiple groups generated antibodies that lost infection by the sars virus which is a cousin of the novel coronavirus. What weve done in our lab is engineered based on starting antibodies and made millions of variance off those to be able to generate antibodies that prevent infection by the novel coronavirus. Where the computation part comes into play, we are able to further optimize the antibodies. We send out molecules for testing and we are wet he and waiting for results to come back. What it happens next in the whole process . As soon as we see how things go with the life virus we move into toxicologys that is. The next thing would be manufacture to scale. That will be the limiting factor. We are trying to move as fast as we can and so are many other groups across the planet. Its important to do this at proper quality. After that we would move to a phase 1 2 Clinical Trial in august. If that looks good we will move to extended distribution in september. Well in the Clinical Trials and all goes as you hope it will, you are thinking maybe released to the public by september . Thats correct. Through an fda protocol that is useful in a pandemic. We would be thats really i im sure you are aware that there are critics out there, including dr. Fauci. How do you respond to that criticism . I think with dr. Fauci the clip you are referring to, that was not as much a criticism as a validation for the work we are doing. Antibodies have done the test of time is eight tried any useful therapeutic. It is useful for treating disease. It was the blockbuster drug against ebola. And dr. Fauci has commented we know this works and there are people working on things out there but we need to get further data that confirms that we are at the level we need to in order to treat patients. Is something we will continue to follow, best of luck. Thank you for taken the time to talk with us. The senate was back to work on capitol hill today. For more on this emergency version of the event in the mists of the coronavirus pandemic, we are joined by major James Sullivan the Salvation Army divisional secretary. Good to have you on, we appreciate it. First lets tell everyone the most significant ways your organization is stepping up to help people during this crisis. The Salvation Army has made the determination were going to do more for families in need during this time. There are distributions of the Salvation Army is doing at all four cores in alameda some in o newark where we are distributing food to families in need nearly every day of the week. We also have a local feeding program in downtown oakland. We are visiting encampments in tiny Home Communities and giving out sack lunches to those in need. Its been a busy time for us. I can only imagine as you try to help people who are homeless during a time like this and also struggling as well. How many boring people are in need of those meals and the groceries you guys are giving out . We are seeing about 400 increase in people and individuals that are coming to the Salvation Army for daily meals and food boxes. Of the lineup is incredible. We plan drive through distributions. We have another large distribution happening on may 16th. We will be helping 1000 families here in the east bay. I know they are helping 4000 families over on the San Francisco side. How has this pandemic changed the way you operate . Has it limited services you can provide, how you can help people in the community . There have been some indications but we have found creative ways to get around them. Distributions for families in need and delivering meals as much as possible. Weve delivered food boxes to seniors in need and a lot to homeless encampments. We can go to where they are at so weve gotten into mobile mode which is not a new thing for the Salvation Army. Our disaster canteens go throughout the country distributing meals and everything that is needed for homeless individuals. This morning, our canteen was going through the neighborhood and passing out meals. We gave out tents. There was a couple that needed to come take a shower so they joined our group and followed us back to our homeless shelter. A woman was able to take a shower because she has a Job Interview tomorrow morning. We were able to help in that simple way. Obviously at a time like this, so many people and families are struggling themselves just to pay the rent and put food on the table. I know that the Salvation Army is seeing a big dip intonation. How bad has it been and how challenging is that for your organization . Is critical. We are relying on the donors in the community to keep our doors open. The dollars in the community go back to the community through the Salvation Army program and ministries. During this pandemic, its necessary that the Salvation Army supports them. We appreciate you coming on and wish you and your colleagues all the best. Thats major James Sullivan with the Salvation Army division in alameda county. We want to remind our viewers if you ktvu.
