Closed. The south bay, fire crews continue to battle a wildfire while cleaning up after another wildfire. The most active is what is known as the cruz fire burning east of gilroy. So far its only 20 contained. Maureen is here with the nothing been made. Frank, the weather was favorable and south Santa Clara County overnight, but the concern remains any winds this afternoon and evening. The fight against the cruz fire continued for a second day east of gilroy. Sky fox wag over the fire zone revealing some of the thousands of acres burned near ranches east of highway 101. An or an glow lit up the area overnight as crews benefited from lower humidity and calmer winds. We made a lot of head way overnight with the good conditions, and i think today is the important part is just to hold that through the afternoon, protect, you know, lives and property. Reporter two structures have already burned, with 30 more threatened according to fire officials. 70 residents have been evacuated from homes between 152 and gilroy hot springs, and for the second day in a row, water dropping planes and helicopters helped crews on the ground. Well be taking advantage of those through the day, as you see it clear out right now. So we want to take vantage of that good weather and get our aircraft in there. Firefighters responded to a structure fire on cruz road. King fire retardant now covers everything from hill sides to roads. The red cross set up an Evacuation Center at the gilroy senior center. Two people phoned for assistance, but no one showed up in person. No precautions are in place because of the pandemic. Its apparent to screen clients who show up and provide them with a safe space with hand washing and social distancing and masks if they need it. Reporter covid19 has changed some logistics. Status brieferrings are more spread out, and firefighters are give packaged meals, instead of the traditional food line. Some residents have posted signs of thanks. We had an incredibly busy weekend all through the bay area with fireworks activity, fire activity, and so to be able to call crews from outside of Santa Clara County and throughout the state is critical. Reporter evacuations have been lifted in morgan hill, after firefighters controlled the park fire, which started late on the 4th of july and burned 340 acres near the anderson reservoir. The cause has not yet been determined for either fire. One firefighter suffered a minor injury in the cruz fire. We expect to get an update on that fire fight later this evening and bring you that new information in later editions of ktvu news. Now lets go to bill martin who is monitoring the latest conditions that firefighters are facing out there right now. Bill, what is it like . Reporter well, first of all, coming off the 4th of july, we talk about it, but weve had so many fires due to fireworks and then you get a dry pattern, just i. E. Summer. You can see the fairfield area. The fire moves pretty quickly with some of the winds were seeing. Now, the firefighting conditions, this is all typical for this time of year. This is not a red flag warning environment. This is july. But this is what july looks like. You can see which way the winds are coming from. This area, there was a fire, obviously, the california fire. You have winds in the california fire up to 25, 30 miles an hour. You a 22 mile an hour wind at hercules. Humidity 44 . Other than the wind, 79 degrees and 44 humidity, or 37 humidity down at the parkway, thats pretty good for firefighters. They love that. Were getting less humidity down to the park in cruz fire. These fires have been burn fog are a while. 21 at gilroy, but you look off frazier, 44 . Thats most air coming off the salinas region there. Now here is the thing, wind is hard to fight fires in, but you have low temperatures, or mild temperatures for this time of year, and youve got pretty decent humidity. So the winds should back down a little bit tonight, and they should be able to get more of a handle on these fires. As you look out in the distance, you can see some haze from some of those fires up around airline and crockett. The haze in the upper atmosphere. So air quality not so great, but, again, this time of year, julie, its always a tough one. People coming off the 4th of july, and you still hear fireworks in the neighborhoods at night, and it is dry. Even though its not hot, it is dry. I think firefighters will have a better opportunity to get on top of this thing, though, with cooler atmospherics tomorrow, and winds dying down tonight. All right, thank you, bill. 4th of july revelers slowed oakland firefighters response to an emergency call saturday night, as hundreds of people gathered in the streets at lake shore and brooklyn avenues. Some people in the crowd jumped, danced, and banged on the fire engine. No one was hurt, but because of the delay, it took the crews more than 10 minutes to reach a woman who was in need of emergency medical care. Because of cal fires aggressive act tack, a white horse is now pink. Fire retardant was dropped on it as the fire was advancing nearby. Several farm animals were moved out ahead of that fire. I did just have an opportunity to visit with the family. Ive spoken with the father, as well as ive had conversations with the mother and folks representing the family, and this is an experience that i, as a grandfather, as a father, as someone who has worked with young people, the majority of my adult life, would never wish anyone have to experience. And its just beyond words. San franciscos District Attorney also releasing a Statement Today reading in part quote my office and i are absolutely devastated to learn of the tragic murder of jace young, a sixyearold boy fatally shot this weekend in the bayview. My team is working hard to support his family. The District Attorney goes on to ask anyone with information to provide that information to homicide investigators. Now, at this point, frank, you were asking about suspects. Police have said theyre looking for two males in connection with this case, and they are investigating, looking for those two males in connection with this case, and also trying to look for the target in this shooting, because, as we said before, the two people who were shot, young jace young and that other adult male victim, apparently not the intended targets of this shooting. Frank, the organitold me he knew this would invoke some type of response. He said the conversation that is happening now is long overdue. Black lives matter, those three words sprawled across a street in martinez have become the talk of the town and the country. Black lives matter go back home you go back home reporter this viral video shows a woman painting over the black lives matter mural the same day it was put up there. And ill tell you what, it irritated my soul, because i have my kids all three of my kids are mixed, okay . Reporter the phrase was painted in response to white supremacist flyers put up the city a week earlier. As we are very aware that it could be vandalized. I was just more so shocked at how brazen it was. That vandalism occurred an hour after we finished, and then we were down here just moment later and we fixed it. Reporter this image of a racial slur on a parking garage circulated on the app next door. Were told the Police Officer painted over it. And Police Officers arrested a man for pointing a gun the mural site that drive by and said all how lives matter. Black lives matter, as well. Reporter the comments positive and negative. A grass fire that is burning in fairfield on Mountain Meadow drive, and its prompted some evacuations. These are live pictures from sky fox. You can see there are homes in the neighborhood that are threatened. A lot of flames, a lot of smoke close to those homes, and also, again, were learning that there are some evacuations. Lets talk more about the fire danger now, bring in bill, our chief meteorologist. When you see the smoke burn like that, what are the conditions like . Well, you know, frank, have a good west wind. Humidities are relatively high. But when you see that smoke plume laid dune like that, its going who dontle to the ground, thats a pretty robust wind. So 25 to 30 mile an hour winds in this area not unusual by any stretch of the imagination. Certainly something to be concerned with, because you can see structures in the path of that fire, and any kind of wind with a fire like this in that open brush, that stuff burns really, really, really fast. And you may even notice. I can see this picture, but one thing i would note about this is, there are some trees and oaks in there, and theyre not really catching, so youre see hearing undercarriage, the undergrowth at the base of these trees. So its not a super hot fire, at least it doesnt appear to be from here. Looks like its burning the grass underneath, but that is dangerous, because it can blow quickly is cause issues for those structures. Does that make sense . Its in a tree, and the trees burn up, and its a hotter fire, but when it gets on the ground like that and doesnt even bother burning the trees. Thats where we are in fairfield right now. The winds, ill take you back to the bay. Well keep an eye on this one for you, obviously. This is one of the problems we have when we have a holiday thats based on fireworks in a state that isnt set up for this at all, and affection lot of illegal fireworks. Actually they were all illegal this year. I shouldnt say all, but i think most of them in the bay area were illegal, and thats what happens, days later, you see fires still continuing ting sparked. There is the wind, but the temperature and the humidity, because of the wind direction, are pretty good stead for the firefighters. In other words, the higher humidity helps a fun. Firefighters will have an opportunity to get a handle on the fires, but right now these winds are sort of at their max. Nsf o is gusting to 35. Not unusual, but certainly a concern for firefighters this afternoon. Bill, thank you. Well see you in a little bit. A new decision from the Supreme Court on the electoral college. A grass fire in fairfield on Mountain Meadow drive has prompted evacuation. If you look at this picture, you can see just how close the fire has come to that neighborhood there, where all of the homes are. Lots of flames, the smoke close to the homes, and you can see, too, that there is wind. Thats why the smoke is essentially laying town there and not going straight up. As we pan in, you get a good sense of just how close this fire is to the homes. Were still working to get information on how contained this fire is. What firefighters are saying about it, how many people have been evacuated. But, again, you can see from these pictures, a very dangerous and treacherous situation because the flames there are so close so that neighborhood on Mountain Meadow drive in fairfield. As of this afternoon, there have been close to 30,000 cases reported to Bay Area Health officials since the pandemic began. More than 600 people in the bay area have now died from the virus. Alameda county has reported the most cases with more than 6800, and santa clara has reported the most deaths with 161. This comes as marin Health Officials last week allowed restaurants to offer Indoor Dining, only now to prohibit that starting today. Rob ross spoke with some Restaurant Owners today about the abrupt changes and joins us now with this report. Rob . Well, julian, marin countys covid19 curve has been trending upwards triggering safe guard, and for Restaurant Owners, it means one step forward and one step because. For many restaurants in marin county, it feels like bad case of whiplash. One week ago, they were allowed to open for Indoor Dining under certain restrictions, but as of monday, under new orders by the Marin County Health department, Indoor Dining is prohibited at least for the next three weeks. Out door eating is still allowed as is takeout. You dont really know what is coming next. Reporter this restaurant in novato said it brought back 7 employees for done service. We brought back anothehired food runners and hosts, and, you know, unfortunately now for the next at least three weeks were not really going to need them. Reporter marin county is not just being monitored because of the outbreak at san quentin prison, but because of increasing cases in the community. Theres not a lot of ambient air and air movement in indoor dine, so people are getting exposed to a lot of air that other people are breathing, even if youre socially distanced. Reporter it was hoped that the restaurants would get used to endure dining, but the week it was allowed, only one person close to eat inside. Because we have the street closure on the weekends, people were more than happy and mostly wanted to be outdoors. I think being in a confined space is a scary spot for people to be in right now. Reporter a few doors down, another restaurant, the owner decided against reopening to dean dining last week, even though he could have. I saw the curve going up, so i had a feeling its not safe yet. In retrospect, i think everybody would admit that we opened things up more quickly than we should have, and i think looking back, were hopefully not going to make that mistake again. County Health Officials will decide in three weeks about Indoor Dining, depending on what direction that curve is headed. Rob ross, ktvu fox 2 news. Bust despite the uptick in cases, some forecasts there say they still wont wear a mask or practice social distancing. Its a false narrative, and when you wear a mask, what you can certainly do, you are further pushing the agenda that is condemning all of us reporter a handful of states are still easing restrictions, including new york city, the former epicenter of the outbreak, now moving into phase three reopening, but without Indoor Dining which had been scheduled to resume monday, drawing mixed reactions from new yorkers. Well see fog back at the coast. Ill have the fiveday forecast ready when i see you next. Othersly when the schedules released, its a little blip, a decent story, but nothing we make headlines over, because we all assume, yeah, we know there will be a season. This is a pretty big deal, because it looks like we are going to have baseball, although there are some questions. But lets put up a little graphic and give you, first of all, the giants and as highlights. July 23rd, San Francisco, 7 00 down at dodgers stadium. Thats when the giants open their season. The 28th will be the home opener versus the padres. August 21st to the 23rd, theyre going to host Madison Bumgarner and the padres. In their first 33 games, the giants are scheduled to face the dodgers 10 times. So thats a talent laden team. Giants better be ready. For the as schedule, july 24th at 7 10, the as versus the angels, and august 7th through the 9th, theyll be hosting the astros who are the favored team basically in the entire american league. September 18th through the 20th, that will be the bay bridge series, hosting the giants. December 27th, thats the regular season for the as against the mariners. The as will travel the fourth most of any Major League Team as it currently sits. Now, i mentioned the makes and the possibilities and the doubters are out there, however about this . 40 divisional games, 10 each against each opponent. 20 interleague games. The giants and as play each other six times. Thats a few of the quirks. But when you look at the schedule and then you look at what is really going on, it might be Wishful Thinking in a big way, as the testing delays led to the as canceling their workouts yesterday. The astros canceled todays practice. Major League Baseball is blaming that on a lab in utah that werent prepared for the holiday weekend, and this is a startling quote from jake deekman, strongest comment ive heard yet, i feel like this is just gonna get shut down in a week, or all the players are going to opt out. So we go through the entire routine of give you the schedule, and obviously the guys who are really in there, the players working out, have some serious doubts as to whether or not Major League Baseball can carry this off, and of course i think it goes without mentioning right now anyway these games are planned with no fans in the stands, frank and julie. Mark, thank you. The nhl said today that they have reached a tentative agreement with the Players Union to hold the playoffs. Unfortunately that turn element not include the sharks, because they were one of the few teams out of contention when the season was stopped because of the pandemic. According to espn, concern Conference Teams will play in edmonton, canada, eastern Conference Teams will play in toronto. The stanley cup finals will also be held in edmonton. Back to the breaking news. The grass fire in fairfield that has prompted evacuations. These are live pictures. Apologize for being so far away, but, again, you do get a sense of what is going on. If we were closer, you would be able to see that homes are threatened, as the flames inch very close to those neighborhoods. Weve just heard from authorities about road closures near the fire. The following residents are being evacuated. Discover pine pearl, early amber court, sierra court. Link road between pitman road are closed, and cordelia road between link road and thomasen line is also closed. Lets go over to bill martin, our chief meteorologist. You were talking about the fire danger. Obviously we had all of the fires started by the illegal fireworks, but theres just an overall fire danger here in the bay area. You just cant be too care. Regards, right. Regards of a holiday that celebrates fire crackers and sparklers. So much of this stuff was illegal this year. Kids will be kids, and they kit get their hands 0 on this stuff and go up into the hills days later, and these hills are, as we know, ready to burn. I cant say that any of these are from fireworks, but im just saying well, in San Francisco, there were 100 fires on the 4th of july and 98 were caused by fireworks. So you can do the calculus on there. The humidities are high. Temperatures mild for this time of year. The winds are strong. Near not extreme. Its just this is the time of night where the wind up in hayward gets going 22 mile as far as the fires, it looks as though theyre them overnigh tonight as the winds will die down, humidities will come up, and the temperatures will drop. Its going to linger tomorrow, and thats why temperatures will be further cooled, and there will be a little more fog at the coast. There was fog this morning. Fog returns tomorrow. You can see the sea breeze in green. And you can so i its 10 degrees cooler in fairfield. Makes a big difference when it cools off at night for firefighters. Theyll tell you that every time. Humidities come up, temperatures cool off. If you can get that wind to get down to 10 to 15 miles per hour, which it will, firefighters will have a better chance at getting a handle on these fires. 89 in a fairfield tomorrow. 84 in napa. Livermore at 84. Pleasanton at 84. Temperatures sort of hover for you back here at 6 00. All right, were see you then, bill. Thank you.
