Good morning on pam cook. It is wednesday, july 8th, and i can tell already that the air , im trying to say, coming in through the window feels warmer than yesterday. Lets check in with kyla. Me too because when i prepped my graphics, i set myself up and this morning i was like where is it is still going to be a really nice day today, no doubt about it, but the inland communities are going to start to feel the heat. And we are starting to see just a little bit more marine layer this morning as was take a look at the storm tracker. But visibility is fine because it is not really making it into the bay. There certainly little moisture out there, we can see low clouds like we did yesterday, but not too much it. Is 60 degrees at oakland, santa rosa kohler, 55 in San Francisco, 50 in livermore, 60 in san jose, we are little warmer than we were in oakland, about seven degrees warmer than santa rosa and fairfield, even at sfo this morning. Today it is going to be a pretty nice day. 75 around the bay, and inland communities that have already started to see some of these 90s will continue to see that today and will pop up another degree. We will talk more about how this warmup is going to develop over the next few days when i come back but for now going to say good morning to my friend sal and send it over to him. Hey good morning to you. We do see a nicelooking commute out there and there have been no major issues. As a matter of fact it has been nice. The main commute i would say in the bay area is still the bay bridge and we see that traffic is moving along relatively well is looking good in both directions. Lets go back to the headlines. President trump wants students to return to the classroom this fall. The administration opposes plans for more Online Learning and staggering schedules to allow for social distancing, but andre senior explains who ultimately gets to decide when and how schools could reopen. We are very much going to put pressure on governors and everybody else to open the schools. Reporter the president from the white house is eastern tuesday on reopening schools and universities in the fall. Everybody wanted. The monophonic, the dads wonder, the kids wanted, its time to do it. Reporter he tells of the declining death rate and increased testing. He also used educators and asked students. Among them a student from st. Vincent depaul haskell. About the students, it really means a lot just to be able to get back out and it means a lot to our Emotional Health and our Mental Health just to be out there with our friends. Reporter the principle of st. Vincent de paul says his goal has three plans for return of classes. There will be the reopening which we planned august 10th and then a hybrid planet which is two days on, one day, two days back in. Reporter but the president wants nothing short of the full reopening of schools. Hours earlier, but the divorce on a Conference Call with governors slammed any plans for Distance Learning and staggered School Schedule saying a choice of two days per week in the classroom is not a choice at all. This move comes in contrast to cdc guidelines which outline that desks should be spaced six feet apart, something that wont be possible if all students return to class at once. Administration officials placed heavy emphasis on the low rate of serious effects of covid19 among children and young adults. But what is so far and clear is how educators will be detected. We can open safely with what we know. And it is really simple practices. As a social distancing. It is wearing face coverings when you are in settings where you cant social distance and it is practicing good personal hygiene. Reporter the decision is actually up to local government, not the federal government. However, School Districts to receive federal funds but it is unclear whether or not those federal funds will be used as a bargaining chip. We reached out to the California Department of education about what the president said but have yet to hear back. Today a group of parents and employees in the Oakland Unified School district will ask the board to keep classrooms closed during the pandemic. Demonstrators will take part in a car caravan beginning at 3 00 this afternoon at east oakland pride elementary school. The caravan will end in front of School District headquarters on broadway for a News Conference at 5 00 tonight. Emmons traders say protecting the health of students and School Employees is paramount. California leaders are announcing they are joining a nationwide lawsuit against the Trump Administration regarding school funding. Tony thurmond and California Attorney general Xavier Becerra took part in the announcement yesterday. They accused the u. S. Education department of siphoning money from Public Schools provided under the cares act and directing the funds to private schools instead. Almost 3 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus here in the u. S. Since the pandemic began. More than 131,000 people have died and more than 90 hundred 36,000 people have recovered he virus. Yesterday, there were at least 45,000 new warns that the u. S. Should not fall into a false complacency because the number of deaths caused by covid19 have dropped. This current state is really not good in the sense that, as you know, we have been in a situation where we were averaging about 20,000 new cases a day. And then a series of circumstances associated with various states and cities trying to open up in the sense of getting back to some form of normality has led to a situation where we now have recordbreaking cases. He says states have a window of opportunity to get this virus under control if people wear masks and follow social distancing and sanitation rules. He also says most of the people who contract the virus do recover. There is a spike in the number of coronavirus cases has Health Officials worrying there will be a shortage of personal protective gear. According to some doctors and nurses, some hospitals are already seeing a shortage of masks, gowns, hair covers and shoe covers. The National Nursing unit and is worried that that year may have to be reused. The American Medical Association really recently wrote to leaders and called for coordinated National Effort to buy and allocate that year. The Better Business bureau is warning about a fake card. Here it is. It claims to exempt people from having to wear a face mask. The card can be purchased online. It has a fraudulent department of justice deal on it. People who buy the cards online are opening themselves up to the identity theft. There just a reminder that some people might not wear a mask, but they may have a legitimate reason for that, for example, people who have preexisting breathing problems and also some children. If theres a newborn baby, they are less than two years of age, they should not be wearing masks. Doctors urge everyone to remember facial coverings are the first line of defense, as well as social distancing. There is a new sign that racial tension continues in the city of martinez. City crews had to be called in to paint over graffiti. Someone had written the words white lives matter in the painting at the intersection of howe road and old orchard road. So far, theres no information about who may responsible for that graffiti. Prosecutors announce the woman who painted over a mural at the contra costa courthouse will face hate crime charges. The mural organizers had a permit to put the words, black lives matter, on the street. Shortly after it was dried, Nicole Anderson and 53yearold even nelson covered up the yellow rotary lettering with black paint. They say the public discussion of racial tension is long overdue. We have to address the root and the byproduct of systemic racism in our country. Black lives matter, and our movement is an important civil rights cause. It was truly heartbreaking. To see that hatred come out in such a bold and just reason way. Now we are just hopeful that the Justice System works how it is supposed to. Is convicted of a crime, nelson and anderson face up to a year in jail. What a story. We are talking about your weather this morning, how it is going to feel now and later on. Kyla grogan is in this morning for steve. I hope youre having a good start to your day so far. A little warmer, but it is still going to be a really nice day around the bay and i wanted to talk a little bit about the fact that we have some kind of mild winds this morning and this will be helpful for firefighters. As you can see, wind is calm and will spots, to the north the same story, you have a little bit of that alta breeze in fairfield, and as we go down to where the cruise fire is, you can see humidity is up to 91, 92 . That is great. We do have a little more wind though, about nine miles per hour, but hopefully will help firefighters. Temperatures are now at 52 degrees, there are already a few 60s on the map. Lafayette, 61, as he head over to the peninsula, San Francisco in those low 50s but 57 in menlo park, we are starting to see a little bit warmer than we were this time yesterday, not bad but just a degree or two. So we had the marine layer tried to roll in this morning, again it is not terribly successful but it made it closer. We have that onshore flow, we could see a few low clouds kind of roll in with this. For the most part we are looking for a slightly above average day so santa rosa about 90 degrees for you, 68 for San Francisco, 55 for oakland with the average is about 71 this time of year. 91 in livermore and 85 in san jose. That heat is taking up in the inland communities. Well talk about that when i have the extended forecast. Time is 4 42, dr. And the east bay shot and killed right in front of his teenage son. Up next, we hear from the doctors family about what led up to that shooting and how his teenage son got away from the gunmen. And a warning, if you use tick tock, why the u. S. He was captured by the police after opening fire and using a k9. Rob roth talked to the victims cousin about this ordeal. Reporter a family and danville coping with confusion, relief, and heartbreak all at once. The whole thing is unreal. We all feel like we are in the middle of watching a really horrible movie. Dr. Ari gershman are in Clinical Trials to my behavior in the video was appalling. This is clearly a moment where i lost control and made incredibly hurtful and divisive comments. I would like to deeply apologize to the family. The tech company has yet to issue a statement. Cant be in this country . This is another incident. A woman confronts an Asian American family. Apparently upset that they were walking their dog which was on the leash. Asian american studies experts as the video highlights what he says is a form of White Nationalism in an effort to cast asian and Asian Americans as other. The videos we are seeing now are just examples of the hundreds of incidents we have seen in california that we have received reports on and we have over 2000 cases in the United States since midmarch. It is frustrating. Ive been here for five generations, my family. If i dont belong here, who belongs here . Experts agree that rhetoric like that spoken by the president like calling covid19 the china virus, normalizes antiasian hate speech. They say the Administration Needs to change its tone to lead on this issue, otherwise there will be likely ongoing incidents of Asian American hate speech and violence. At the state capital, the statue of crisp over columbus and Queen Isabella is no longer there. A crane was brought into the Capitol Rotunda to remove the controversial statute that had been on display for more than 135 years. This attracted a crowd. Many say they were glad to see the statue removed, but not everyone celebrated. That is slavery. He killed our people. He gave us measles. As an indigenous woman, he represents genocide. For italianamericans, columbus, columbus day is a symbol of our identity. We feel that taking down the statues is diminishing our heritage. The statue of Christopher Columbus will be stored in the state warehouse just like the statue of the controversial missionary, that was toppled by protesters at the capital over the weekend. It is 4 52 and we went to check in witing to heat up for most of us. What about the cost . The cost is going to stay pretty nice. It will warm up a couple degrees but they get the benefit of being by the ocean which helps to get that kind of cooler moisture air back. And the rest is studying at further inland, we will feel the warm up. We felt a little bit yesterday. Take a look at some of these identity. We did have 90 degrees in concord, 89 in livermore and santa rosa, gilroy came in at about 86 degrees, 84 both for napa and morgan hill, but then you get closer to the water, oakland 74, then francisco was 65. So thats the difference. But overall we are going to be warming today. A couple degrees for those at the coast that it will be in the 90s for many today. Warm to hot tomorrow as a High Pressure really builds and then starts to dominate the forecast and we wont see any cooling until we get to about mid week of next week. This is the difference in temperatures between 24 hours ago and now and with the exception of novato, everyone was running 2 to 7 degrees warmer by this time yesterday. We are sitting at 60 degrees, and oakland 60 degrees in san jose, but we are in the mid50s in San Francisco and santa rosa , check out concord already at 64 degrees. And if resume out here in the state of california, your eye goes to that orange, right . Where it is 80 degrees impulse spring, 91 in scottsdale, that is because of High Pressure that is going to be building it and this very strong High Pressure. Right now lowpressure is keeping us color but this High Pressure, it has some major staying power. So were going to see some warmer days ahead for the bay and i think for the Desert Southwest it is really going to be a hot one running over the next five days. Heres where we are at this money with our marine layer, and made it a little bit closer but still not any major influence on our weather this morning in the bay. No real major fog out there to talk about. We will be 60 degrees in San Francisco, therell be 90s on the map. Conger, livermore, antioch, 94. 91 and morgan hill that around the baby, starting to get warmer. We are seeing 80s in fremont and Mountain View today. Heres the forecast that shows you that we really just warm up and stay there for the next four or five days in our extended forecast, but again if you look around the bay, were talking mid to upper 70s. Not bad. Back to you. Arise in the number of coronavirus cases a big concern for californians who want to get back to work.
