Well, today we continued our summer zip trips on the road for ktvu. The nine. We visited the city of los gatos. Our Sal Castaneda takes a look at what some of the restaurants have to offer in his taste of the town. Los gatos has beautiful views of the Santa Cruz Mountains and a lot of places to eat in a charming downtown area. If youre new to los gatos and hungry, id recommend starting on santa cruz avenue. You can easily walk up and down the street and find seemingly everything. I saw vietnam food right next to a sushi bar within a short walk from breweries, bakeries and bistros. The locals confirm there are plenty of choices. Oh, my gosh. A variety. You know, it just depends on what they feel like. Theres a really good pizza place down the road. Mexican food. This is a great place for brunch. This is a great place for brunch. Its the los gatos cafe. Just watching the kitchen. I felt as if id gone to short order cook heaven. As the dishes kept coming out of the window. Everything on their menu is actually amazing. Weve been coming here for 14 years. I would say choose one of the specials from the board and grab a table outside. Although the place welcomes turrets, we saw mostly locals on the day i visited and theres a reason for that. The food is very consistent, amazing staff. The service is very good. I just wish there would be open longer so we can get dinner too. From here. Next, im headed down the street to Willow Street pizza again. The los gatos weather is reliably good, so i saw most people sitting outside inside a wood fired oven is the key to making the pizzas. The pizza smells delicious. I know. You better get one. I will. I will. Trust me. Ive eaten my way through this place before. The key here is fresh local ingredients. So we make our dough inhouse. Its 100 double zero organic flour, and the pizzas are thin crust. Let me just go on record saying i like the pizza. Willow street calls the italian. So it took a portrait for social media of this beauty. Will a street also makes more than pizza in case you want pasta, salads and burgers and of course, cocktails if youre so inclined. Next, i walked over to old town, los gatos to visit a family owned restaurant thats been pleasing los gatos customers for more than 40 years. Steamers grill house since we started in 79. Here in town, locally, weve consistently strived to bring in the best quality and the best people for our staffing. Although steamers has many dishes on the menu, i got to try perhaps its most popular dish made personally for me by paul matlock, one of the owners. Its the housemade linguine with wild blue prawns, dungeness crab and mushrooms in a garlic lemon butter sauce just watching the way paul made this, i knew it would be a good dish and messy. Eating aside, i was right. So right. Finally theres a local bar right on santa cruz avenue called the black watch, which has been in the same spot since 1959. As it says, right on the sign. This place gets packed. But i came during a quiet time to have bartender Jennifer Anzalone make me the drink. The place is famous for the kamikaze drink carefully because these drinks arent weak. As we toasted together, jennifer told me this place is the ultimate local bar. Its like cheers. We know your drinks, your names, your friends, your family and we will continue our summer on the road for the nine with our next zip trip in the north bay city of novato. That will happen on friday, august 18th. Again on ktvu the nine will a Bay Area Company leads the way when it comes to new types of weather research. He frequently collaborated with darren aronofsky. He appeared in several of that directors films, including life of pi. He also appeared at the berkeley Repertory Theater in 2014, starring in a tony kushner stage production called the intelligent homosexuals guide to capitalism and socialism, with a key to the scriptures. Science artists are getting a never before seen glimpse inside the eyes of hurricanes. Thanks to new Drone Technology. Its being built right here in the bay area. Meteorology mark tamayo is giving us a closer look at how it works. This hangar at the former Naval Air Station in alameda is filled with rich military history. Now it is the headquarters of a company that is making a futuristic splash in hurricane research. Saildrone is making these robotic sailboats that are rigged to collect high quality ocean data. 12 sail drones, the largest fleet ever, are now positioned to literally chase hurricanes in the western atlantic, caribbean and gulf of mexico. Trying to understand whats happening as the hurricanes approaching, as the hurricanes happening and as it passes through at the water level is something that noaa has never been able to achieve before. Mark tyler is the chief operating officer of saildrone. The Company Makes these unmanned surface vehicles that are customized to accomplish Different Research missions. Each of these aquatic drones carries an impressive payload of instruments that can measure an assortment of variables in the air and on the sea. These powerful vehicles get their first taste of salt water right here. Alameda is a great location for this. This location allows us straight access to the lagoon or behind me and the bay so we can do local testing with three of the different saildrone models were visible in seaplane lagoon. Each has a different design and purpose. They all rely heavily on the sun to power their research mission. The explorer is the smallest sail drone, and that is the model that sails into hurricanes. The complexity of everything from the salinity of the water, how much co2 is being transmitted between air and water, the currents, the wind speeds and the different locations around the world. Im walking at about 2 to 3 miles an hour and that is the average speed of a sail drone in the ocean. The offshore missions could last for several months. And over that time frame, researchers are watching the data in real time. Greg foltz is an oceanographer for the National Oceanic and atmospheric administration. He worked on the first Experimental Mission with saildrone in 2021, came along and heard about it. Yeah i was really excited. I thought, if we can make this work, if we can get a saildrone into a major hurricane eyewall and get data back and it doesnt get severely damaged and sink, its going to be amazing. And it was amazing. First with Hurricane Sam in september 2021, the onboard camera captured the stunning visuals of the category four storm north of puerto rico. And last year, a saildrone had a rendezvous with another major storm in the atlantic. This footage shows 50 foot waves churned up by hurricane fiona. While the video is exciting, the data is the prize and is fueling research that boosts the understanding of hurricane development. Were finding some interesting things with the saildrone data, how the waves interact with the winds and can cause changes in that drag effect that slows down the hurricanes winds. And this is where it all happens. Mission control. This is yeah, this is mission control. This is our office. Those are the sail drones out right now. Exactly. Yeah. 36 each one of these little icons represents a vehicle. While the robots are out at sea, a team is watching from here. Julia paxton is a director of Mission Management. This is where most of our actually all of our missions are planned from here. So our Mission Management team serves as our group of navigators who collaborate with the customers to get the vehicles where they need to be, essentially planning and then executing. Her team works on various missions that range from seafloor mapping the carbon uptake near hawaii to the current el nino in the equatorial pacific. There is always a set of eyes on these drones. Pilots are not essentially turning the rudder or adjusting the wing or anything like that, but our our pilots are the humans who are sending the sets of navigation commands. The team is now gearing up for another hurricane mission and they continue to raise the bar. The idea of putting more vehicles out is not only to have a higher likelihood of sale and positioning one of the vehicles in the path of a coming storm, but also to have redundancy as well. So potentially to be sampling different sides of the same storm is a goal. Mark tamayo, ktvu, fox two news and they are doing that work right across the estuary from us in alameda.
