Baja and on the pacific coast. Some Service Members were out patrolling those beaches, making sure swimmers stay out of the high surf. You can see it there. Mexican Officials Say they are tracking the storm carefully, especially in areas at risk for flooding and landslides. Officials in Southern California are warning residents to brace for heavy rain. Flash flooding and strong wind gusts down in Orange County. Crews were already out preparing the beach for a possible storm surge, building a berm to protect oceanfront property. People are getting ready with sandbags and extra supplies if theres a storm surge, which sometimes happens with Something Like this, then, you know, were just praying for the best because it can be pretty bad this afternoon , Los Angeles County officials urged people to get ready for what they called a difficult and unique weather event. Get ready , sign up for alerts, make a plan. So if you if you have the ability to understand where you would go, if you are evacuated, other family members or friends houses, those are all things that are a lot easier to do prior to the emergency occurring. Boat owners in Southern California, including redondo beach, are getting ready for the storm, making sure vessels are properly secured. Yeah. Meteorologist Roberto Gonzales is joining us now with a look at how this is going to really impact really mexico, Southern California. Were hearing about possible impacts in nevada as far east as phenix, arizona. So this is a major storm, not something were accustomed here. Usually when you see this scale, the dimension of a storm, you start off with an area low pressure. Its upgraded to a tropical depression, then a Tropical Storm, then a hurricane. Then you have a major hurricane when winds are over 110mph. And thats what we are dealing with. And we havent seen anything like this in our lifetime here in the bay area or in Southern California. And keep in mind, a watch means heads up. A warning means it is happening right now and taking. And that is going to be the next step for everybody in Southern California as we see hurricane hillary not make landfall, but scrape across cabo san lucas. Also, all the baja, california. Itll lose a little bit of its punch. So then it becomes a Tropical Storm. Its downgraded. But dont get me wrong, itll still have a big punch. Were talking about rain amounts anywhere between three and six inches. And a lot of these areas are below sea level. Keep that in mind right here in california. And 3 to 6in of rain. Well, thats usually what you get in a whole year in los angeles or in san diego. Hey, how about palm springs . So thats its location right now. You see the tip of baja, california right here. This is right now forecast to scrape across baja, california, lose a lot of its punch and then begin to veer into Southern California. Thats what we look like here. We have clouds, but thats from Tropical Storm eugene thats been spinning its wheels off our coast. This is what were dealing with right here. This is a category four on a scale of 1 to 5. So this is going to continue its northerly direction. Then we have a little bit of a great flavor idea of how its going to move now. And as it does so. Okay, you look at this right here. This is the cone were not talking about up like this. Were talking about the outer lines here. So it has a lot of territory it can encompass. And were not talking necessarily about the eye, the winds associated with this hurricane are several hundred miles wide. So thats why theyre already seeing the clouds and the wind and baja, california, even though they havent felt its impact yet. So once it goes into Southern California again, computer models take it this way. Thats not going to happen. Another computer model takes it on this path here, and that does happen. Orange county is going to be more affected than, lets say, palm springs. But i have it. Yeah, its going to affect Orange County with Copious Amounts of rain and wind and already starting to see the surf build the potential of a very strong storm surge. Also on the backside of this, what will become a Tropical Storm. But then it will lift up towards bakersfield and palm springs and death valley, which is below sea level. And then make its tracks in towards las vegas by monday. And weve seen the flooding along the strip there with just a monsoon storm. So this is something that we have to take very seriously as it continues its jog and continues to wander towards california. Again, the timing, the rain should begin late Night Saturday and throughout nevada and also in arizona. But the biggest punch will be on sunday as far as san diego is concerned. And the los angeles areas you were talking about, long beach and san pedro and all the way into norwalk and also all the way into the Desert Southwest and the desert. Boy thats a lot of arid hard, hard ground. And they dont have anywhere for that water to go except for mass flash flooding, mudslides, debris flows. Its going to be a very desperate situation, something that we havent seen, potentially catastrophic. And we will stay on top of it throughout this newscast. All right, roberta, we will keep checking in with you. Thank you so much. Death valley park announces that it will be closed this weekend as flash floods prompted by hurricane hillary threatened park infrastructure. The park will be closed from this saturday until tuesday the 22nd. And today, im proud to say our nations are answering that call. Biden forming a military alliance in the region amid rising tensions with china and north korea. I believe this is a very positive step forward. China has deliberately stoked tension between japan and south korea in an effort to keep our Alliance System divided and weakened. But now, by bringing together three like minded democratic allies with advanced economic and capable militaries that are committed to peace and stability, i think this this does a lot to enhance deterrence in the indopacific. We already pay for it. They want to raise more on it. Come on now, man. People out here struggling with bills makes no sense to save ratepayers money. Some utilities have taken to leaving the lines up in the air, but replacing those lines and these burnable poles with whats called an insulated system, the insulated system uses layers of complex non conducting material mounted on steel or concrete poles for more fire resistance, minimizing falling lines and arcing. Its always good to empower people to make that decision for themselves, to have it insulated, but to have pga make that decision for us and increasing it as up to 50 a month, you know, it doesnt really sit well with anybody. I think that they should be making sure that they look into all different alternatives before making such a drastic decision that affects our lives in a decade, turn, says Southern California, edison has already put in 5000 miles of insulated power lines sitting atop those fire resistant poles. So far, pga has buried just 300 miles of power lines at a cost of about 3 million a mile. The insulated of those lines is way better for consumers. Its way better for wildfire safety. And its just going to be done faster and cheaper. The public can have a huge impact on all of this in the next 30 days or so, but only if large number of messages and calls to the puc assembly persons. Senator and the governor take place. All pga would say is that it believes these costs are way overstated. As usual, the cpuc said nothing. Tom vacar kttv. Fox two news. On a scale of 1 to 5, its very powerful. It has intensified very rapidly. Its location is right here, right now 360 miles just southwest of baja. Its wobbling along to the north northwest of 14. Thats not going to get smacked as much as cabo san lucas. Even though for hundreds of miles the feeder bands extend. In fact, theyre already feeling the effects of this hurricane. At the tip of baja, california. So our projection right now is its going to drift into san diego by overNight Saturday night into sunday. We have a saving grace because of this, this pesky area, low pressure. Its actually the remnant of what was a Tropical Storm, eugene. Its been there all week long, fueling us with that high humidity. But this is going to help us because as a remnants of hillary begin to lift up towards the state of california, watch what happens. It pushes the precipitation away from the bay area. If we see anything at all, it could be by tuesday in the form of maybe a light shower, maybe a thunderstorm, which we dont want that dry lightning at all because of the potential of fire danger. But but bakersville, palm springs, death valley all the way to las vegas is going to get smacked. 3 to 6in of rain. Thats how much they usually experience in a whole year. And keep in mind, were about sea level in san diego and were just above sea level and throughout, oh, lets say the bakersfield area. So the agriculture areas are very nervous at this particular time. Heavy rain will impact the tahoe area as well. Please plan accordingly. Tonight, cooler, 50s and few 60s. Tomorrow 69 to 95, we are going back up and Holding Steady for your sunday building. Our cloud cover on monday, then again on tuesday. Unsettled and we will keep you posted on the progression on hurricane hillary. All right, roberta, thank you so much. I he says what he found here in this Program Changed his life. It really changed a lot because once i sat on the horse, i, you know, i wasnt biting my teeth. I volunteers were excited. I mean, they talked i made a bunch of friends. Now, at 12 years old, he gives back every weekend as a volunteer for helping children like mara who love sunday rides. You want to go ride spirit or triscuit . Yeah does that sound like fun . Yeah you should go. You yeah. Okay were going to get ready and go soon. Okay all right. Its become something thats really changed her perspective and something that she enjoys way more than we ever thought. And shes gotten so much out of it. Look where you want to go. Dont look at him. This has been parkers dream since she was in college. After she volunteered at a horse therapy program. And for the last two decades, she has made sure one thing about her program has never changed. I think one of the most important things that was my mission and my goal was to make this accessible to everybody. So a lot of the families i met early on said, you know, it was helping, but they just couldnt afford it anymore. And, you know, kids with special needs have a lot of financial requirements. Theres occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy. And so i think the first thing on the chopping block tends to be the horse therapy. So i thought, gosh, if there was some way i could raise enough money and make this free, wouldnt that be amazing . And ive been able to do that for 20 years. Ive never charged. But what she does need is help. So she has volunteers like caitlyn bolen, who started helping at the age of ten and who returned a couple of years ago to help train others. You know, you want to make sure youre keeping the riders safe and making sure theyre having a good time and just that theyre enjoying their experience. You dont have to be like an expert on horses to volunteer here. Like you can. Theres so many Different Things that somebody can do volunteer Marion Huntington spends hours here. She ran her own nonprofit for many years. My goal was to help low income kids here in nevada increase their physical and Mental Health through sports. So theres 35 of all kids in nevada now are low income, which translates to about 3000 kids at and at least 150 of them are homeless. Those are the ones who want to be counted. So that is the target population. She knows what this program can do. So when she closed her nonprofit, she put all of her resources here. Basically another transformation besides the fact that you become calm to help the horse is joy and movement and motion. You can go faster on horse, youre higher on a horse. The horse can sense things that humans cannot sense, you know, with their ears and nose and body. And it like extends your own perceptions into the world. And i think its like riding a magic carpet for these kids, a Magic Carpet Ride that gave jonathan new dreams. Yeah. How is your anxiety these days . I dont have anxiety, actually, so im really good now. Ive been riding horses, you know . Yeah ive been winning belt buckles. My dream is to become just like heather because shes like a very my idol sometimes. Yeah. And and i want to become a horse whisperer and a horse trainer, and i want to also own my horse therapy, too. So, like, i really want to give back, you know, and giving back gives everyone out on that trail something special. Maybe its physical improvements or verbal progress, but its also something more. Heather parker will tell you something just happens on that trail between a horse and its rider. The horse provides the magic and its pretty hard to define or explain. Its theres something there for sure. What Amazing Program that was Claudine Wong reporting as part of our zip trip series this summer series will wrap up on fridays, september 1st.
