Box two justice now propalestinian chants ringing out across Stanford University today. Students pitching tents on campus demanding the university divest from companies with ties to israel. I think its very important for us to be here in solidarity. Its very, very, very painful as an american to see this. Emotions running high at Stanford University and College Campuses across the country. Good evening. Im julie julie haener and im alex savage. College protests are spreading by the day. In atlanta, Police Used Tear Gas and tasers to disperse several dozen protesters. Today at Emory University, dozens of students also rallying at George Washington university and the university of minnesota. And there were some attempts, moments that were captured at the Fashion Institute of technology in new york city, where around 100 students stormed the colleges lobby today. Ktvu south bay reporter Lamonica Peters joins us live tonight from Stanford University, where protesters have set up tents right there in the middle of campus. Lamonica thats right. Alex im here at white memorial plaza, where students are gathered from earlier today where they held a protest. They set up tents. And right now its starting to sprinkle a little bit. And one of them told me that they intend to be here all night. This time they are asking the university to divest or to disconnect from companies they believe are supporting the war in gaza. We will not stop. We will not rest this course. Thats at Stanford University. Hundreds of propalestinian protesters gathered thursday afternoon chanting and marching on campus through their chants. They called on the university to divest from what they call apartheid. Another quarter. No more money for israels water. No more money for israels water. Palestine free. Free palestine to divest means the university would divert money from its investments in companies that protesters believe are tied to israel and profit from the war in gaza. And if you really want to know what the students want, maybe, just maybe, try to talk to them, try to sit down on a table with them, maybe try to listen to their chants once and not think about it as just some mob thats trying to destroy your house. Organizers at stanford are calling the movement the Peoples University of palestine, and say they want to establish an alternative Learning Space to raise political consciousness in white memorial plaza, supporters spoke about why they felt compelled to join the protest. I urge us to keep all of this in mind, that the black struggle in the palestinian struggle are inextricably tied to one another. As an International Student from vietnam, the only reason that im standing here right now is because a few decades ago, millions of students and people from all over the world and the us stood up and fought for us, for divestment, for our liberation, for the wars and the killings to stop. Now, again, there are dozens of protesters still here on stanfords campus. They have tents set up. Ive been told that they intend to be here all night, and they also plan to continue their protest tomorrow. Now, i reached out to Stanford University, who says that they support students having the right to free speech. But if any of the universitys policies are broken, they do intend to pursue disciplinary action. Alex. All right. Lamonica peters, live on the stanford campus for us tonight. Lamonica. Thank you. We move now to the east bay, where a protest continues to grow at uc berkeley. Tents remain at sproul plaza tonight, where the demonstration has remained peaceful. Theres less than three weeks to go before the end of cals spring semester. You see, has not said and is not saying that it will plan to change its Investment Policies or practices, which is something that protesters have been calling for. In los angeles, hundreds of protesters set up a camp demonstration at ucla today. Dozens of tents are now at the center of campus there. The encampment was set up with a media check in desk, medical tent and library. It was eventually enclosed with fortified walls, a counter protest broke out earlier tonight, but no arrests were made and no injuries have been reported. We are here because we have a set of demands, including divestment, with our university in ucla. I think this is a shame, shame that Ucla Administration is allowing this to happen. Access is still restricted tonight at the university of southern california. Security guards are placed at two campus gates where unregistered guests are not allowed in between the hours of 7 p. M. And 6 a. M. Just today, usc canceled its main Graduation Ceremony amid safety concerns. And from new york to texas and atlanta, the chaos on campus is only intensifying. Police have made hundreds of arrests nationwide as demonstrators set up camps, host rallies and clash with authorities. Fox news Steve Harrigan reports. Now from new york. Chaos at Emory University in atlanta, officers with weapons and in Tactical Gear forcibly removing people who set up an overnight encampment on campus, the school later saying activists were trespassing and were not even part of the university. Similar scenes of violence at bostons Emerson College overnight, where more than 100 people were arrested after police removed tents in a public alley. Three people died. Meanwhile, demonstrations were a lot calmer after dozens of arrests at the university of texas at austin wednesday. Its definitely gotten out of control. But as protests over the israelihamas war grow at colleges and universities around the country, there is fatigue setting in for some, especially at columbia university, where the protest movement started. There needs to be a serious disciplinary process. The nypd needs to take them off our campus. These students need to get off the lawns so that i can graduate, but thats unlikely to happen anytime soon. Protest organizers say they are still negotiating with school administrators. Theres no deadline. Its a timeline for negotiations. Its not a deadline to bring Police Enforcement or or any law, any other Law Enforcement. Earlier in the day, congresswoman ilhan omar, even stopped by the encampment with her daughter, who attends columbia. I just wanted to see and make sure that what you know, thats being that we were hearing from the young people that it is peaceful. Usc canceled its graduation due to security concerns. Columbia may do the same in new york. Steve harrigan, fox news. And our coverage of the campus protests against the war in the middle east continues online. You can find the very latest developments here in california and across the country, all ktvu. Com. New at ten, a bill meant to help people from arizona get access to abortion care here in california is moving forward in the state assembly. This bill would allow licensed Arizona Doctors in Good Standing to get temporary clearance to perform abortion procedures on their patients in california, the bill is headed to the Assembly Business and professions committee. A group of Safety Advocates is on a mission to make the streets of San Francisco safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. They claim the city isnt doing enough to keep a popular bike route safe, so they took matters into their own hands, installing their own signs on one busy street, ktvu joy honda joins us now. Hes live in the city tonight where some neighbors support with that group is doing joey. Yeah, julie. Everyone that we heard from today supports having those signs up. They say they got people to slow down, drivers to slow down, that is, and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists. But after just two days of being up, the city took the signs down. This is the wiggle, several blocks worth of streets marked with green bike route signs on the pavement where both cars and bicyclists share the road, zigzagging across the map for a mile from mission to haight. Anytime you have cars and people and bikes, you know its a its a dangerous formula. Fed up with what they feel are dangerous streets. Members of safe streets rebel took matters into their own hands. The group drilled these very official looking signs into the median on tuesday without city approval, warning drivers to yield to pedestrians and bikes. I loved them, i live right here and theres this big speed bump right here and you hear cars scraping over it all the time. And for the last couple of days it was quiet. Now worried about being cited or sued, members of the group dont want to reveal their names or faces on camera. We really feel like sfmta needs to step up and just really drastically improve street safety. Neighbors have seen their fair share of accidents along the wiggle. One of our neighbors that happens to live across the street from the park was hit in his wheelchair. Its a horrific, extremely dangerous intersection on safe street. Rebels also claims responsibility for creating their own fire lanes this week by painting the curbs red along steiner street, even including a city logo, this is still not a safe route. Its still prioritizes cars, and with just a small with just some small improvements, it could be safer for everyone, sfmta tells ktvu. While they appreciate the push for safer streets, the citys efforts are guided by engineering best practices and carry out thorough review of feasibility and effectiveness for new or proposed roadway designs. The city started planning the wiggle back in 2013 to make it safer out there for pedestrians and cyclists, and to reduce traffic issues out there and congestion. Julie. So, joey, what else are organizers of this safe street rebel trying to accomplish out there . You know, they have a lengthy list of ideas that theyd like to see happen out here to make it safer. Julie. They first of all, want those yield signs to come back and be approved by the city. But overall, theyre saying this is an example of what they just did out here of what could be done to help protect everyone out here on these streets. Julie all right. Joey horta in San Francisco tonight. Joey. Thank you. Hundreds of San Francisco parking control officers held a demonstration outside the sfmta office today. They protested Parking Enforcement crackdowns that they say will make their jobs more dangerous as safety. The officers say they found out about an upcoming parking crackdown through news reports. They claim tough sweeps in the past led to increased threats on the job, and that theyre angry and that angry car owners rather have assaulted them. Followed me about 2 or 3 blocks, waited for me at the stoplight, approached my vehicle, punched the window and cut my i weapons. And, you know, vicious animals. We encounter that on a daily basis. Sfmta Officials Say officers are given deescalation training, selfdefense tools and can communicate with internal dispatch connected to sfpd. The university of georgia tight end, coming in at number 13 overall as the pick tonight. Jason appelbaum joining us here tonight with more on all the draft action, including a first round pick for the 49ers. Yeah well get to brock bowers in a minute because thats really a great local story. But the 49 ers obviously front and center a lot of interest in the niners around these parts. And lots of speculation leading up to the draft that the niners might trade wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to move up in the first round. That didnt happen yet. Instead they they they stood pat with the 31st pick and they took another wide receiver who was actually ex teammate at Arizona State in 2019, nfl commissioner Roger Goodell. He made the announcement the 40 niners selecting Ricky Pearsall, who played at asu and then florida, and that drew a pretty good reaction from the 200 or so fans gathered at levis stadium for the 40 niners draft party. Pearsall, a six foot one wideout who is said to be very polished, a crisp route runner with excellent hands as you can see it right there and drafting a wide receiver, you wonder if maybe the 40 niners are hedging their bets in case theyre in a prolonged contract. Stalemate with aiyuk. We shall see. Now the raiders as we mentioned, they they used to practice in napa before they moved to las vegas today. They dipped into the north bay talent pool with pick number 13. And meantime, at Bowers High School alma mater, the Las Vegas Raiders select brock. Yeah, its pretty cool. Yeah, several hundred students, parents 49ers fans. They turned out in the napa high gym to celebrate the pick and show their pride for bowers. Chris harris is e current football coach there. Hes rooting for bowers. But listen in. Hes also a little bit conflicted. Super excited for him. I mean , hes such a stud and hes going to go to a very Good Organization thats close to home. Theres a lot of fans in town that are going to be wearing brock bowers, raider jerseys, its torn for me a little bit. Im a niners fan, but im so happy. Its probably gonna be the first raider jersey, the only raider jersey ill ever own. Yeah. Bowers, a two sport star at napa high, played football and basketball, so a big moment for. Thats great for the bay area. Yeah. A huge congratulations to him and his family. Any big surprises tonight so far in the first round that you saw. You know its tough to say that the big surprise to me was that no defensive players were drafted with the first 14 picks. Yeah. 14 offensive players. Thats is that a new record. It is a new record. The other thing that surprised me is that 275,000 people, they estimate, gathered in detroit. That huge crowd, that crowd is incredible. Thats amazing to watch people be selected. It was incredible. Yeah. And a lot of quarterbacks went early two six in the first i think 12 picks or Something Like that. Yeah, it was very quarterback heavy. Not so much for running backs. All right. Well we have rounds two and three tomorrow night and then well go on. Coming up in sports. All right. Well see you a little bit later jason. Thank you. He says they dont have that answer yet, but it will be a district decision. Were not saying to the community like, well, you should have this asking you to say, tell us how many schools we should have. You should have this many schools and or you should not have that many schools. No, this is our responsibility. And so we want to be very transparent about how well be making that decision. The superintendent says they also received a lot of fears that smaller schools are being targeted. He says size is not a factor. New and new at ten tonight, ktvu is amber lee joins us now after speaking with that shop owner about this sort of treasure hunt. This is a kind of a fun idea. Amber. It is julie. The hunt starts tomorrow when the clues are posted online. He tells me the coins will not be hard to find. He predicts the hunt will be over in a matter of hours, and it celebrates the opening of the bay bridge. So its a bay bridge, half dollars, what they call it rare, collectible coins, pieces of history made in San Francisco. Seth chandler, owner of winter coin in the citys marina district, is giving away a total of 11 coins five gold, five silver and one copper in what he calls a Scavenger Hunt thats open to the public. I thought of the idea to place 11 different coins, all made in San Francisco, in 11 different neighborhoods, chandler says. The value of the coins ranges from 250 to 2,500 each. This 20 gold coin from 1915 and a penny made in 1909, are the two most valuable. I just love coins. Ive been collecting coins since i was four years old. You know when you hold a round piece of metal thats 2 or 300 years old and you think about our founding fathers, or you think about the country where the coin was made in, you could really connect with history. This is National Coin week, and chandler wants to get more people interested in collecting coins. San francisco is the king of coin cities. Were the only city in the country with three mints. A u. S. Mint is still operating in the upper market area. It produces special Edition Commemorative coins. The first u. S. Mint started operations in the financial district in 1854. Its now home to the San Francisco historical society, a museum. The second u. S. Mint building on fifth street is now a venue space. There is no artifact that even comes close to our coins to tell a story of a civilization. It tells so much about who we are and what we are, and the us mint has done a good job. Chandler says he and his staff have hidden coins in locations across the city, but that they will be giving out clues on social media. Each coin will be in a plastic bag, along with a card with information on how to contact his store with coin. Were encouraging people to bring it back here to our shop on lombard street. Just because we want to meet them, we want to see how excited they are. Maybe do a little bit of video on it. And most importantly, we want to educate them aut their coin that they found, chandler tells me at noon on friday. Tomorrow, he will post photos with clues on the Stores Instagram twitter coin. One hint think like a tourist. Chandler hopes the hunt will be fun and exciting for everyone. Okay, so think like a tourist. Maybe touristy spots . I mean, yeah, this is a lot of fun. Yeah, i bet a lot of people are going to take part in this. You can just imagine. Yeah. He says he loves coin collecting so much that he wants to share it with everyone. And there are just 11 coins and theyre hidden in various spots. Okay, so its. And when does it start again . Tomorrow at noon. Go online, go to their Instagram Account again. Its the witter coin okay. With no s at the end. And therell be 11 photos giving you clues as to where to look. All right, all right. Exciting, amber. Thank you. Adventure begins. Amber. Thank you. Today, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments over whether former President Trump is immune from prosecution in a case charging him with plotting to overturn the results of the 2020 president ial election. Ktvu Jana Katsuyama shows us what unfolded during this dramatic day in court. Donald trumps attorney, d john sauer, began the hearing with his Opening Statements without president ial immunity from criminal prosecution, there can be no presidency as we know it. For 234 years of american history, no president was ever prosecuted for his official acts. Sauer claimed. Donald trumps actions were official when trump tried to switch the 2020 Election Results to his favor, trumps attorney argued that a former president should qualify for immunity from prosecution for official acts while in office, but the governments attorney, michael dreeben, said such president ial immunity has no foundation in the constitution or the Supreme Courts history. This court has never recognized absolute criminal immunity for any public official. His novel theory would immunize former president s for criminal liability for bribery, treason, sedition, murder, and here conspiring to use fraud to overturn the results of an election and perpetuate himself in power. The Supreme Court justices acknowledged the magnitude of the hearing, and for more than 2. 5 hours wednesday, they grilled attorneys on both sides.
