Okay, sal, well demonstrators in berkeley have taken over a building owned by uc berkeley thats not far from the campus. Yeah, uc berkeley Officials Say they believe these are not the same people who set up camp at sproul plaza. Ktvu Bailey Ocarroll reports on what police are doing to monitor the situation. We will not go away. The proposed group took over this property near the campus of uc berkeley, breaking down boarded up windows, climbing on the roof of the anna head complex and graffitiing propalestinian messages. Protesters also brought in pallets and pallets of supplies, indicating this group intends to hold their ground. The protesters denied our request for an interview, but students passing by say they dont agree with this style of demonstration. I also think its about striking a balance. Gathering the most attention is the primary objective and like depending on, you know, the magnitude of the circumstances, i think theres more leeway with this type of thing. Yeah. In general, i would say that, you know, its not good to vandalize private property. This latest demonstration comes less than 24 hours after a different propalestinian group dismantled their encampment in sproul plaza after coming to a resolution with the university. In a statement, the University Said today is the 55th anniversary of peoples park. An action was first announced on platforms controlled by peoples park activists. They are vandalizing an unsafe, boarded up, fire damaged building next to peoples park. We have confirmed that the coalition with whom we reached an understanding yesterday did not initiate todays action. Uc Berkeley Police say they estimate 10 to 20 people are inside the building, which no longer is in use because of a fire that left it badly burned in 2022. The protest has been largely peaceful, something students like william are thankful for as he was busy moving across the street from the protest. I didnt even like, know because we got like a warn me, like, you know, our campus, kind of like news, like alerts, whatever. And theyre like, oh, Police Activity on like, this street. Im like, oh, like whats going on . And i see, and its just, it doesnt look like too much is going on. Everyone we spoke to hopes the protest remains this way. Its unclear for how long these folks will be out here in this encampment. We cant tell you that there have been police and chp here on the scene. Just monitoring the situation in berkeley. Im Bailey Ocarroll, ktvu, fox two news. All right. Bailey thank you. Time is 403. Will the protesters who had been at sproul plaza on the cal campus, packed up and went to uc merced, where the uc regents are meeting . They want the regents to divest from companies that give support to israel during the war in gaza, an Investment Officer for uc said the uc system could lose 32 billion of its 175 billion in assets if it agreed to the demands of the students to divest. Uc officials have already said they dont plan to divest today, classes at uc irvine will be held online following a showdown on campus between the police and propalestinian protesters. Three protesters took over the physical Sciences Building and blocked the entrance. Thats when University Police called for assistance and hundreds of Law Enforcement officers in riot gear rushed to the campus. Many demonstrators were detained when they would not leave, and the university declared their protest an unlawful assembly. No more business as usual. When 15,000 children were bombed in the past three months. No more business as usual. We all love each other. We all care about each other, our people, our humanitarian standing up for human rights here. We dont know yet if any of the protesters were formally arrested or just detained. The encampment that had been on campus for a few weeks was also cleared. Now you can stay up to date on the continuing campus protests across the bay area and nationwide. Just go to ktvu. A proposal from valley water would establish protection zones along the nearly 300 miles of waterways under its control. The move would ban encampments and dumping trash penalties could include 500 fines and up to 30 days in jail for violators who return and reestablish encampments. City leaders say these encampments send garbage and contaminants into the water, but some worry the plan leaves Homeless People with limited options. A lot of places to go where i pretty much, i like to look for a place that is our partners at valley water to push policies and approaches that clear the waterways and protect our watershed. There is a real risk of their efforts sending hundreds of Homeless Individuals out into the neighborhoods without a plan. The proposal will go before valley waters Environmental Creek Cleanup Committee tomorrow. All right. Our times for 19. Steve paulson is back, and you actually saw some light drizzle a little bit. Little clark. That is correct, not a lot, but enough where you could see it. And temperatures, as you know, i mean, we really havent had much in the way of warm weather a couple of days. But the outlook here, at least the 23rd through the 27th shows cooler than average temperatures, so ill buy into that. It looks like a series of systems are coming in for today. Another big fog bank in place. A little bit of drizzle out there. Sunny, breezy to downright windy, you can see the low cloud deck, a few high clouds zipping overhead, but the low cloud deck is firmly in place. West south west wind at pittsburgh to 31mph. Its an onshore breeze or wind, and when travis is 28, gusting to 37, that is extra. Hold on the hairspray day. So, there are some big differences in some of the forecast highs as much as ten degrees. Im not buying the warmer. Im staying with this big fog bank, now the air aloft is kind of warm for some. I mean, the Oakland Hills, 49 degrees. Thats right above the claremont southwest 17. Thatll get your attention. Mount veeder, 55, Boulder Creek 48. So, i mean, again, temperatures below about 3000ft. You can see the activity coming off the mountains. First watch again over by bishop fresno. So there is a little bit of an offshore breeze. And the higher elevations. But at the surface it is all onshore 50 for most here upper 50s to right at 60. But i mean theres some mild air mass in place. Water temps have come up. Theyre about the mid 50s now compared to the low 50s a couple a week ago. 51 kensington, 53 panola, 53. Lafayette 53. Orinda 54 clayton and north dublin. So everyones pretty close 30s up at truckee and South Lake Tahoe, also at mammoth at 39 degrees, too much low clouds and fog. A little bit of activity pops up over the mountains there. So if youre going up there, just keep an eye on things there. But drizzle looks to be front and center for the next couple of days. Maybe not this much, but i do buy into some of this drizzle the next couple of days. So a lot of gray over the bay. Low overcast, drizzle, fog than sun. My forecast highs are significantly lower than what you might hear on the radio or somewhere else but 60s and 70s on those temps. All right steve, thank you. Time is now 421. Less than a day after one group of propalestinian protesters packed up their encampment on uc berkeleys campus, a new group has taken over a University Building and plans to stay. Dozens of protesters entered the anahad Alumni Center hall yesterday, breaking boarded up windows and spraying graffiti. The building had been vacant since 2022. Right now, it is unclear how many protesters are inside the building. University police are calling this an active crime scene, but some students who live nearby say they are not alarmed by the demonstration. Im really glad that people are expressing like their opinion and are able to like, you know, voice their beliefs and everything, especially like in peaceful manners, like its not like theyre disturbing or like disrupting or like hurting anyone. The letter also says the school will review its investments. Now, the chancellor of the california State University system says the message was sent without the appropriate approvals. She added i want to acknowledge how deeply concerned i am about the impact the statement has had on the sonoma state community and how challenging and painful it will be for many of our students and Community Members to see and read. Student protesters at San FranciscoState University say they are taking down their encampment after reaching an agreement with the schools president. They say the school has agreed to make its investment portfolio more transparent and divest from any company that manufactures weapons. Immediately after announcing the news, protesters started packing up their tents. Student organizers say this agreement does not address all of their demands, but they call it a strong first step. The only demand that we havent currently met is declared declaring it a genocide, calling it what it is, which is still very important and something that were going to continue to work on through the summer and into the fall. The organizers also say they are working on bringing all csu students together to make a system wide change. Our time is now. 433. But you know what . It was another good year. Took a while to get going, but it ended up in february, march and april were good. Temperatures look to be cooler than average. Im not really sold on the entire west coast being cooler, but thats the way it does look, at least through the 2728 the rest of may is favoring a lot of low clouds and fog, and near normal temps to slightly below fog, drizzle. Sunny, breezy. Temperatures today will be in the 60s 70. Theres a significant difference between whats called the National Blend of models and then the gfs and the nam on the temps as much as ten degrees. Last summer, 15 year old xana cara made her first trip to meet her relatives in gaza. Now many of them are gone. The places they visited destroyed, her mother says their relatives, who survived are now refugees. They were all forced to flee and all of them have lost their homes. Our time is now four 4419 doctors, including ten americans, are trapped in gaza after israel seized and closed the rafah Border Crossing earlier this month. The white house says the Biden Administration is in contact with four of the families of the doctors, as well as the israeli government. Time is now. 445 oakland congresswoman barbara lee is looking back at how her political career began. They began back in the 1970s at Mills College in oakland. Thats where barbara lee met her mentor and friend, Shirley Chisholm. Chisholms Glass Ceiling shattering career, now the subject of a new film, ktvu. Greg lee spoke with congresswoman lee about the film and why she hopes it will inspire future trailblazers. Oh my goodness. Oh, you got to be kidding. Now you guys have to get me this congresswoman barbara lee, taking a walk down memory lane at the place where her political roots were first planted inside the library at her alma mater, Mills College in oakland. She reminisced over her yearbook photo and a newsletter she wrote as the president of the black Student Union, i was able to receive a an unbelievably good quality education at the same time as i was raising two small little boys on public assistance and food stamps. Also on this table of memories, photos of Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to congress. Lee invited chisholm to speak on campus as chisholm began her historic president ial campaign in 1972. It was the start of a life changing friendship and mentorship for lee. There was a class here at mills that i was about to flunk because we were required to work in a political campaign. I didnt know Shirley Chisholm was running, so i passed my class because i got involved in her campaign and i registered to vote. If all youre doing is outside yelling and screaming, thats all youre ever going to be a yeller and a screamer. You have to be part of the process. The process doesnt exist in politics for black women, youre different. Chisholms trailblazing president ial run and life the subject of a new biopic titled shirley, released on netflix. Chisholm, played by regina king, a Young Barbara lee depicted by christina jackson. Its been the role of a lifetime in the sense of being able to play someone who has made so much change in the past 50 years. When i met christina, it was like meeting me. Lee met jackson during filming and on this day brought the actress to the place where it all began. Lee walking on campus, showing jackson where chisholm spoke more than 50 years ago. The echoes of her message reverberating through lees political career, the progressive icon breaking her own barriers and Opening Doors for the next generation. In her nearly 30 years in congress, there is no way i would have been able to fight the fights that i have to fight each and every day for peace and for justice and for equity and equality. Had it not been for Shirley Chisholm and of course, my mother, chisholm passed in 2005, lee and jackson said theyre grateful the film honors chisholms legacy and are hopeful the story inspires young people. We have this group of people in this generation who know how Important Information is, who know how important their voices are, who know how important it is to be able to speak up. When black women fight for issues that are important in low income communities and the black community, we fight for everybody because we make this country stronger and more equitable. Greg lee ktvu, fox two news. Thank you greg. The latest Homeless Count suggests fewer people are living on the streets in alameda county. The county released the data from the 2024 point in time count, which was held in january. At the time, there were 9450 people considered homeless. Thats a 3 drop from the 2022 survey. As for individual cities, the results are mixed. Homeless populations rose in oakland, hayward and dublin, while in berkeley, that number dropped by 20. And when i and the mayor of aragon were elected in 2016, we made ending homelessness in berkeley our top priority. And since then we have invested in programs, policies, people and partners that have been a cohesive plan to reduce and end homelessness in berkeley. Now, some critics question the numbers, saying the Homeless Count is an inexact census and that many people who are homeless can be left out of that final count. Our time is now. 449 homelessness and housing are the big issues in the San Francisco mayors race, mayoral candidate Daniel Laurie unveiled the plan that he says will get every unhoused person in San Francisco off the streets within six months. Its a Public Private partnership that laurie says will create 1500 fema style Emergency Shelter beds. Laurie told ktvu it would cost 175 million over five years, but he said thats less expensive than the alternative. This is going to be a cost saver for our city right now, to have somebody unhoused on our streets in terms of care, health care, cleaning up, its 70,000 a person on the streets to get them inside into shelter, safe, dignified shelter. Its 40,000 over the past five monday, laurie is scheduled to debate fellow candidates mark farrell and supervisor ahsha safai. Mayor london breed and supervisor aaron peskin will attend a separate event that same evening as San Francisco tries to increase tourism following the pandemic, theres a shakeup within the group thats in charge of promoting the city. Now, the ceo of San Francisco travel, scott beck, just resigned after only seven months on the job. San francisco travel is an organization that promotes the city to visitors and tourists. Beck didnt give a reason for stepping down, but the Vice President and general manager of hotel nikko, anna maria presutti, will take over the organization in the interim. All right. I think the tourism, pictures will be nice this weekend. Should be sunny and clear, right . I dont know about that. No. Well, i think its the usual may gray in the city. Okay. I just think they cant get around that for now, i dont always show this graphic because i dont always agree with it, but ill buy into the theme today. Im leaning on the cooler temps versus some projections, which are just, i think, way too warm. So 60s for many around the bay and then inland. 70s maybe this is a little underdone, but i by the theme of it, which is temperatures, i dont think theyll get that warm today, we have i mean, if youre higher elevations, youre either in the 40s or the 60s. Theres a big spread here, but fog, drizzle, coast and bay, some mist, drizzle out there. Sunny, breezy. And theres a big fog bank out there. And my kid compressed a little bit, but i think the damage is done here unless the wind turns now. Atlas peak pittsburgh had a roaring west wind. Now its turned northerly. Well see. Same for mount diablo west southwest though in the Oakland Berkeley hills, west in the city. And there is a screaming wind out the travis 28 west southwest to 37. And its all onshore santa rosa, novato, napa, concord, oakland, even sfo out to livermore. 55, mount veeder only 49 though in the Oakland Hills, in southwest wind to 17. And Boulder Creek is only 48, but plenty of low clouds in place, and i think theyll do the usual dance. Theyll retreat slowly back to the coast. 50s on the temps. Were on the mild side. Unless youre Santa Cruz Mountains or even hollister and 5152 Scotts Valley is in there. Aptos 52 mid 50s though cupertino, saratoga, campbell, santa clara and san jose. A little bit of activity down in the four corners, maybe up in the mountains. Could get some thunderstorm activity popping up. Theres been some in the central sierra. I think drizzle is the big story for us. Maybe not this much, but over the next 48 hours, drizzle looks to be likely here for coast and bay and watching the mountains. So if you just traveling up there for the weekend or early next week, could be some boomers popping up here, but a lot of gray over the bay. Low overcast, drizzle, fog, then sun. It will be nice to mild breezy, unless a north wind or a northeast wind kicks in. Well stay in the 60s 70s. If that does develop, then some inland areas will pop into the 80s. But im leaning on that fog bank a little warmer friday. Back to cooler saturday. The nice sunday, monday. All right. Thank you steve. The president ial debate schedule for this year has now been set. There are more than 2. 5 Million People in Santa Clara County, but there are only 755 active Single Family homes on the market. Those homes are out of reach for many people. Were looking for our heading into the weekend forecast. Lets check in with Steve Paulson a stratus quo as we like to say. And theres just not a lot changing here a little bit of mist drizzle. Mr. Drizzle is in town here this morning. Coast and bay on the mild side. A lot of 50s on the temps. In fact, i think theyre all 50s big fog bank in place now. The air aloft is kind of warm, but when the fog rolls in and boy has it ever the last couple of days and its the same here this morning. Some drizzle fog burns back to the coast. Sunny breezy inland temperatures. Im leaning more towards the cooler side than the warmer side, but 60s and 70s as well. Theres 50 ways to say goodbye, but theres only one way to get your traffic. And thats what mr. Sal castaneda, i see what you did there. Thank you. Steve lets go right to the cameras here. Pardon me. At and when the bay bridge traffic starts getting a little busy, you might see a crowd, however. Right now traffic is moving along very well onto the bridge. There have been no major issues, so go ahead and drive by there. It looks pretty good. Also if youre driving on westbound 92, you will see traffic moving along very nicely all the way over to the other side. Now at 501, lets go back to the headlines, okay. Sal, will, the president of Sonoma State University has been suspended. Now he says the university worked out agreements with propalestinian protesters. But the university Officials Say he spoke out of turn. Ktvu james torres is at sonoma states campus right now where more than two week long encampment there is gone. Good morning james dave, good morning to you. Sonoma State University is part of the california State University system, and the systems chancellor called president mike lee insubordinate for announcing that he had reached a number of different agreements with student protesters here. Now, in a statement, chancellor Mildred Garcia wrote the message was, quote, sent without the appropriate approvals. She also added i want to acknowledge how deeply concerned i am about the impact the statement has had on the sonoma state community and how challenging and painful it will be for many of our students and Community Members to see and read the message shes referring to is a campus wide alert from president lee. He met with students twice during their more than two week long demonstration. He says the university came to a few agreements that includes disclosing the universitys investments with a propalestinian Student Advisory Council that will be formed this fall and considered divestment strategies. He also promised an academic boycott against programs that are sponsored by or represent the state of israel. In the latest statement from president mike lee that he sent yesterday, he acknowledges a mistake and says he sent his message without the proper approvals part of it reading quote, in my attempt to find agreement with one group of students, i marginalized other members of our student population and community. I realized the harm that this has caused and i take full ownership of it. I deeply regret the unintended consequences of my actions at this point. Now, tents from the encampment at sonoma state are now gone. The csu chancellor says she is reviewing the matter and named an acting University President , according to the press democrat, some students say they are still planning for a demonstration of some sort during commencement ceremonies, which are set to begin this saturday. Reporting live from Sonoma State University. Im james torres, ktvu, fox two news. All right, james, thank you. Time is now. 504 protesters who had been at sproul plaza on the cal campus packed up and went to the uc merced. Thats where uc regents are meeting now. They want the regents to divest from companies that give support to israel during the war in gaza, an Investment Officer for uc said the uc system could lose 32 billion of its 175 billion in assets if it agreed to the demands of the students to divest. Uc officials have already said they do not plan to divest. Today, classes at uc irvine will be held online following a showdown on campus between the police and pro palestinian protesters. We are. Protesters took over the physical Sciences Building and blocked the entrance, and thats when University Police called for assistance and hundreds of Law Enforcement officers in riot gear rushed to the campus. Many demonstrators were detained when they would not leave as the university declared their protest an unlawful assembly. No more business as usual. When 15,000 children were bombed in the past three months, no more business as usual. Just go to ktvu dot com for the very latest updates. All right, pam, time is 505 this morning. Governor gavin newsom is at the vatican. It began with the social media post from President Biden challenging donald trump to two debates. Trump quickly accepted there will be two one on june 27th, hosted by cnn. The other september 10th on abc. Biden seemed to be driving this car all day. And i think that you will see republicans questioning they dont like cnn. They really dont like abc. Theyll be questioning why President Trump agreed so quickly to do it this way. Both campaigns have bypassed the commission on president ial debates, which had already set dates and venues for three debates in the fall. Can i take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation, without any mental reservations . After a few days on his new job, it looks like oaklands new police chief is settling in. The city released this video of police chief Floyd Mitchell being sworn in. His first day on the job was monday. A public swearing in ceremony is expected in the near future. People across the bay area are getting on their bikes this morning to join the National Celebration, promoting bikes as a way to commute. Previously called bike to work day, the annual event is now referred to as bike to wherever day. The change reflects the fact that many peoples work and commute habits have shifted since the pandemic. Several cities around the bay area have events planned this morning to celebrate and encourage people to ride their bikes. All right, time is now 507. The oakland ballers Baseball Team hoped to include some of the citys sports history at their new baseball field in west oakland. The ballers formally asked the Coliseum Joint Powers Authority for the right to buy about 5000 bleacher seats that were last used when the raiders played at the coliseum. Those seats have been sitting unused in the parking lot of the stadium since the raiders moved to las vegas. Now, if that purchase is approved, the ballers would install those seats before next years season. Crab sandwiches are good. The giants have a much needed day off today. After playing 16 straight games. They will host the Colorado Rockies starting tomorrow. After enjoying their first win of the season against the dodgers, 4 to 1, Mike Yastrzemski hit a two run homer homer in the third inning, a hummer as well. Logan webb threw six shutout innings, but the play of the night came from outfielder luis matos. Take a look at this stretched over that center field wall and robbed the dodgers of a home run. Amazing catch. The as need a win today against the Houston Astros to avoid a four game sweep. The as were shut out three zero as the offense struck out nine times, could only muster two hits. The as have dropped four straight games as well. Another big fog bank in place, take a look at temperatures going out. This is from the climate prediction center. I dont always agree with him, but in this case, i buy some of it. A cooler than average temps here as we head towards the last half of may. Ill buy into that. Im not. Not really sure. The entire west coast and intermountain region will be cool, but there are some hints of that possibility here. But for today, dealing with a big, big fog bank. No doubt about it. Lots of drizzle. So fog, drizzle and then sunny. Breezy to windy. Big big low cloud deck in place and it looks like its increasing, not decreasing. Pittsburgh has been west northwest anywhere from about 30 miles an hour northwest in the city. Oakland Berkeley Hills west southwest davis point west southwest to 2628. But travis continues to rock and roll here, 26 west to 37, sacramento gets it. The Weather Service there went 79 for a high. And i applaud them for that because thats thats correct i agree with that. Once they get a gust over 35 usually thats a downward trend on the temps. So thats what im leaning on today. 49 the Oakland Hills west southwest at 17. Boulder creek is only 48. Mount veeder 55. Mount diablo is 67. But you got to get up around 3000ft to find really warm air aloft. Just too much low cloud deck in place. And now if the wind turns northerly or northeast, that would certainly do it. But right now its all onshore 50s on the temps low mid to a few, even upper on the temps here. A lot of gray out there. And thats going to win out i think. Could be some drizzle here. We already talked about that coast and bay maybe not this much, but i think you get the idea. The theme is higher elevations. Coast and bay could be dealing with drizzle and the mountains might be looking a little bit of thunderstorm activity, especially if we go into late in the weekend and early next week. No rain showing up for us. Gray over the bay for sure. Low overcast drizzle, fog retreats slowly, then sun. Itll be nice to mild to breezy, 6070 on the temps and tomorrow does look a little warmer, but then right back to cooler saturday. Leveling off sunday monday. Thank you steve. A proposal from valley water would establish protection zones along the nearly 300 miles of waterways under its control. The move would ban encampments and dumping trash. Penalties could include 500 fines and up to 30 days in jail for violators who return and reestablish encampments. City leaders say these encampments send garbage and contaminants into the water, but some worry the plan leaves Homeless People with limited options. A lot of places to go where i pretty much, ill have to look for a place that is our partners at valley water push policies and approaches that clear the waterways and protect our watershed. There is a real risk of their efforts sending hundreds of Homeless Individuals out into the neighborhoods without a plan. The proposal will go before valley waters Environmental Creek Cleanup Committee tomorrow. Our time is 518. The state fish and Game Commission has stopped allowing fishing in two key areas because of low numbers of salmon. Its the second Straight Year fish and game officials banned fishing in the Central Valley, and Klamath River basin is a drought and climate disruption, as well as severe wildfires, have led to harmful algae blooms. Thats affecting spawning and rearing habitats. That has caused a chinook salmon populations to just completely plummet out. All right, lets check in with steve. You know, i have read that at one time in the carquinez strait, the water was pink because there were so many sounds. So many sounds. Wow. Yes. Wow. The miwoks would come down from napa towards benicia, the ohlone would come down, and it was pink. So i read that. I hope its true, but wow, i believe it, i believe wow. All right. The Sierra Snowpack at one time was, id say rather robust as well. But boy, it decreases rapidly once you get to may and thats whats happened here. Echo peak had 102in on march 7th. And then on today its down to 20 and it goes fast, especially when you start getting temperatures pretty warm. I dont always like to show this because i dont always agree with it, but i tend to buy the theme of it today, which is leaning on cooler versus warmer. Theres some big differences in the forecast highs as much as ten degrees, but right now i just think theres too much fog and low clouds. I think youll be warmer than that. Antioch, brentwood, probably, you know, closer to 80. But you get the idea here that theres just so much fog out there and drizzle and a onshore. If pittsburgh has a west wind of 30, youre not going to get that warm. I mean, youll be upper 70s davis point west to 25, i mean its just roaring wind even out to travis 26 to 37. I mean, theres just theres just no way theyre going to get that warm unless it collapses or turns north northeast. But right now, thats not happening. So a lot of low clouds in place, 50s on the temps. And we are looking for mid 50s now, a few locations, upper 50s. The breezes turned a little southerly. So the water temps have come up a little bit there. Instead of being 50 or 51, theyre now 55. But it doesnt matter in this kind of a pattern here. Theres enough of an onshore push. All that activity, you can see the arizona four corners could be a little bit popping up in the mountains and the sierra over the weekend and early next week. Drizzle looks to be likely for us. I dont think therell be this much, but i think you get the idea here. The theme of it is again, and up in the mountains. So mammoth, kirkwood, truckee, South Lake Tahoe could be looking a little bit of activity early next week. Morning low clouds, drizzle. Mist, sunny, breezy. Its a pretty good gusts out there. 60s and 70s on the temps. So a little cooler today to near you know similar to what we had yesterday. It does look like a little pop tomorrow on the temps. Back to cooler saturday then nice sunday monday dave. All right steve thank you. Time is 521. A walk down memory lane with oakland congresswoman barbara lee. So theyre warmer, but theres just a lot of low clouds, a lot of gray out there and even drizzle. So when the fog rolls in, boy, has it ever. And a gust at 37mph from the west out of travis. Thats usually a sure sign that we will be in the 60s, 70s. And thats what im going with. All right. Sometimes the traffic can be a heartbreaker. Lets find out whats going on with mr. Sal castaneda. Well, we want this commute to be ordinary, steve. We dont want any surprises. Yesterday we had a few, and it didnt go well. So lets go right to the bay bridge. You can see traffic from our triple a Traffic Camera is doing pretty well. If youre going to be doing a drive by there in the San Francisco, it should be a very nice drive, no major problems here on this bridge or on other bridges, like the san mateo bridge. Were off to a good start there. 531 lets get back to the headlines. Okay, sal, thank you. Well, as we speak, governor gavin newsom is at the vatican. Hes attending a Climate Change summit organized and hosted by pope francis. Governor newsom is one of three us governors who were invited ktvu allie rasmus in the studio now to tell us what hes doing there and the goal of that summit. Good morning ali. Good morning dave. Just within the past couple of hours, Governor Newsom spoke before an auditorium full of policy makers and researchers from around the globe whove gathered at the vatican. Pope francis has made protecting the environment a key part of his pontificate, and the goal of this three day Climate Summit that hes called is to come up with ideas, solutions and an overall blueprint on how local governments can make their themselves more climate resilient in the face of extreme weather and other challenges. Now, the conference is supposed to be apolitical. The pope does not endorse political candidates directly, but during his remarks this morning, Governor Newsom talked about our states role of independence when it comes to environmental policies, from whats happening at the with the politics at the National Level and what could happen with the outcome of this years president ial election that allow us to maintain our leadership regardless of what happens at the federal level . And if theres anything i want to impress upon you is the stability of californias relationship to the issue of changing the way we produce and consume energy and the issue of environmental stewardship, regardless of what happens at the National Level, we are a trusted and stable partner. Newsom spoke on the second day of this three day summit. The governors of massachusetts, new york and bostons mayor were also invited to attend and speak. Now, at the end of the summit, participants will sign a protocol promising to become more climate resilient, and they will take some of the suggestions in that document to the united nations. Pam. Thank you. Ali. Less than a day after one group of propalestinian protesters packed up their encampment on uc berkeleys campus, a new group has taken over a University Building. Dozens of protesters entered anna head alumni hall. They broke through boarded up windows and sprayed graffiti. The building had been vacant since 2022, and right now its unclear how many protesters are inside that building. But University Police are calling this an active crime scene. We talked with some students who live nearby who say theyre not alarmed by the demonstration. Im really glad that people are expressing like their opinion and are able to like, you know, voice their beliefs and everything, especially like in peaceful manners, like its not like theyre disturbing or like disrupting or like hurting anyone we asked the university about. It would not say if police have plans to get out, get people out of the building or shut down the encampment outside. Our time is 534. The president of Sonoma State University has been placed on administrative leave after he sent an unapproved, campus wide message saying the school had reached an agreement with propalestine protesters. Now, in that letter, University President mike lee wrote that sonoma state will take part in an academic boycott with israeli universities, including reassessing study abroad programs in israel. The letter also says the school will review its investments. Now the chancellor of the california State University system says that message was sent without the appropriate approvals. She added i want to acknowledge how deeply concerned i am about the impact. The statement has had on the sonoma state community and how challenging and painful it will be for many of our students and Community Members to see and read student protesters at San FranciscoState University are taking down their encampment after reaching an agreement with the schools president. The organizers also say theyre working on bringing all csu students together to make a system wide change. Time is now 535. The artist, who created an iconic sculpture on the campus of san jose state, spoke to student demonstrators who set up encampments at the foot of his protest piece. You know this statue has always been meant to be of service to you so that you could use use it for your advocacy. Rigo, 23, created the famous statue showing track and field stars. Tommie smith and john carlos raising their fists in the black power salute at the 1968 olympic games. The two athletes attended san jose state. Now the artist told us the sculpture includes an empty spot representing student activism. This this monument at the center of san jose State University celebrates the very thing thats happening right now. Tommie smith and john carlos were students here. They paid a very personal high price for the bravery of their action in mexico city. Now, the visit by the artist followed a statement by san jose state saying that tommie smith and john carlos expressed disapproval about the statue being used as part of the encampment. However, the statement added that smith and carlos support the right to Free Expression and peaceful protest. Now you can stay up to date on the ongoing campus protests across the bay area and nationwide by heading to our website, ktvu. Com for the latest updates. The month of may is melanoma and skin Cancer Awareness month, and Health Care Professionals remind us all protect yourself. As the warmer weather draws us more outdoors and exposed to the sun for longer periods of time, dermatologists warn the increased sun exposure could raise your chance of developing skin cancer, and the Doctors Point out, while people with lighter complexions have a higher risk, skin cancer affects everybody african americans, asians and hispanics do have a risk of melanoma. The risk is much lower because they dont experience sunburns, but the issue becomes late diagnosis and late treatment. Now, dermatologists recommend using water resistant sunscreen, then reapply it often if youre in and out of the water or in a pool or at the beach and its really important to apply the sunscreen at 10 to 15 minutes before you go outside. Well, if theres a fog screen, you might need that because thats what we have in place here. And temperatures, except for a few days this month , have been on the cool to mild side. And i dont think today is really going to change all that much here. The climate prediction center, we call them cpc. Their temperature outlook for the 23rd to the 29th favors cooler than average temperatures. Not sure the entire west coast intermountain region will be in that game, but ill buy it for now. It does look like the rest of the month will be on the average side to cooler than average. Its just too much in the way of low clouds. Fog, drizzle, sunny, breezy, cool coast, warm inland. But not. I mean, unless youre in the sacramento valley. I mean red bluff. Yesterday was 99, so if you get out to the valley, yeah, its warm to hot. But for us its not. Were a little bit of a southeast breeze and that water temps have come up when you get the northwest wind. Water temps like this. It was cold. We had upper 40s, low 50s. But when you get that south southeast breeze, San Francisco is now 55. Half moon bay 56. Point reyes 54. In monterey, bowies 54 and 55. These are about average for this time of year. A roaring west southwest wind for some davis points up 23. Oakland Berkeley Hills. But its really out towards travis. Thats kind of the key there. Cordelia hiddenbrooke american canyon. Cordelia. Fairfield. When its 26 to 37, thats rocking and rolling that is a roaring onshore wind. Southeast wind for Mountain View and also san jose and Half Moon Bay. So thats coming in from the Santa Clara Valley for Mountain View. And also san jose 50s on the temps upper 50s even for some, but 30s in the mountains. 50 arcata eureka to 59 in los angeles and 61 in san diego. Too much gray for us, so could be a little more than just drizzle. Maybe a couple of one hundredths will fall here. I think this is a little a little excessive, but in the higher elevations, 3 to 4 one hundredths wouldnt surprise me. And in the mountains starting on sunday into monday, tuesday could be some thunderstorm activity. Just, you know, looking ahead there, that looks to be the only rain in the forecast would be up in the mountains and it would be thunderstorm activity. Gray over the bay, low overcast drizzle 6070 on the temps. Just subtle day to day changes today about the same. Tomorrow a little warmer, a little cooler. Saturday then nice slightly warmer sunday monday. Thank you steve. Cracking down on vehicle registration. Getting some pushback on the peninsula. Coming up in our 6 00 hour. Why . Some argue it will contribute to the bay areas housing crisis and an emotional night east bay. The new exhibit, focusing on the october 7th in israel and how the bay areas jewish to remember the people who died in the october 7th attacks by hamas against israel. Now we can make it better. Its easy to remember now. This event was held at the Piedmont Center for the arts. The performer, israeli musician orian stone. Some of his family members were murdered and kidnaped on october 7th. Now, the event also featured a Photo Exhibition and a war diary video. Palestinians here in the bay area say they have lost many family members in the war in gaza. Over 100 people in our family have been killed. I think the youngest person in our family that was killed was four months old, like a baby. Last summer, 15 year old xana elkarra made her first trip to meet her relatives in gaza. Now many of them are gone. The places they visited destroyed. Her mother says their relatives who survived are now refugees. They were all forced to flee and all of them have lost their homes. We dont know of a Single Family member that has a house left. They tell us they feel despair over whats happening in gaza, as they are not able to help their relatives. Our time is five 4619 doctors, including ten americans, are trapped in gaza after israel seized and closed down the rafah Border Crossing earlier this month. The hospital is shaking with the bombs that are going off consistent, and this is a scale of destruction that i have never seen before. Ive been in wars. Ive seen, you know, combat injuries and natural disasters, but not to this scale. Now, these doctors are with the palestinian american medical association, which posted the video youre looking at to x. The Doctors First went into gaza on may 1st to provide Emergency Medical Care to civilians. They were supposed to leave on monday, but they were denied exit from gaza. The white house said it knows about the situation, and theyre trying to get the doctors out. If there was an operation in rafah or potential operation in rafah, it doesnt. We need to get them out. We want to get them out and that is our it has nothing to do with anything else. These are americans impacted american citizens. And so were working to get them out. The white house says the Biden Administration is in contact with four of the doctors families, as well as the israeli government. Oakland congresswoman barbara lee is featured in a new movie on netflix about Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to congress. There is no way i would have been able to fight the fights that i have to fight each and every day for peace and for justice and for equity and equality. Had it not been for Shirley Chisholm and of course, my mother back in 1972. Lee, who is the president of the black Student Union at Mills College in oakland, invited chisholm to speak on campus. It was the start of a life changing friendship and mentorship for lee. The relationship between the two women is depicted in the netflix biopic titled Shirley Chisholm is played by regina king. The Young Barbara lee is played by christina jackson. Its been the role of a lifetime in the sense of being able to play someone who has made so much change in the past 50 years, when i met christina, it was like meeting me. That must have been interesting. Lee met jackson during filming, brought the actress to Mills College, showing her where chisholm spoke more than 50 years ago. I saw some of the movie and the actress who played barbara lee. She was spot on. I mean, she was really good. I guess even barbara lee said. Its like meeting my younger self, right . Right. Well we get to meet sal castaneda. Hes here watching our morning commute. How does it look out there now . Doesnt look too bad. Dave and pam, good morning to you. Right now we see the east shore freeway. Lets go to our triple a Traffic Camera and show you that eastshore freeway there looks pretty good coming around the corner to the berkeley curve. And there you go to the bay bridge toll plaza. And right now at the toll plaza, we do have a backup that stretches to about the end of that parking lot area. Its about a ten minute delay before you make it onto the bridge. San mateo bridge looks pretty good. The peninsula traffic is not bad right now, and if youre driving on 280 101 in san jose, well, that looks okay. Driving through no major issues. 549 spring steve, back with todays weather speaking of looking pretty good. So how do you do it . Steve, i read your book. Oh thank you sir i appreciate that. All right, fairfield. What about him . West at 26, gusting to 37. Ive been doing this for a few months. A couple of years. Theyre done. Theres no way theyre going to get that warm. And sacramento weather gets it. They went 79 for a high. And i applaud them for that because i agree i went 78. Thats a roaring delta wind. And usually when that sets up this time of year youre not getting warmer unless the wind turns northerly or northeast. And i dont think thats happening 50s on the temps here, probably not changing all that much, we just were in a series of a weak little systems, but they keep us in this kind of a pattern. So one day, little cooler, one day a little warmer, and it looks that way probably for the rest of the month here with night and morning drizzle. Youve had some this morning. Coast and bay, Sierra Nevada might be flirting with some thunderstorm activity early next week. Just a heads up in case youre going up there, you know, again, you get a lot of lead time on that. But gray over the bay for sure. Low overcast, drizzle, fog than sun. Nice to mild breezy, some inland temps could push upper 70s, i think. Maybe low 80s. But in my forecast zone, im going 60s and 70s. A little warmer tomorrow. Back to cooler saturday then. Nice on the weekend. Sunday, monday. Okay steve, thank you. Times 550 dont pay the rent. The county released new data from the 2024 point in time count that was held in january. There were 9450 people considered homeless in the county. Thats a 3 drop from the 2022 survey. Now, as for individual cities, the results are mixed. Homeless populations went up in oakland, hayward and dublin, while in berkeley, the number dropped by 20. And when i and the mayor aragon were elected in 2016, we made ending homelessness in berkeley our top priority. And since then, we have invested in programs, policies, people and partners that have been a cohesive plan to reduce and end homelessness in berkeley. Now, some of the critics are questioning these numbers. They say the Homeless Count is not an accurate sentence. Census and that many people who are homeless can be left out of the final count. An hour later, he received the call from redwood city, saying that Oakland Police had told his car ktvu was present when he went to the tow yard to retrieve his truck. Well tell you what its like out there this morning as demonstrators hold their ground. And from california to the vatican, the trip taken by governor gavin newsom to talk about Climate Change and the takeaways from a summit organized by pope francis. From ktvu, fox two news. This is mornings on two. As we take you live to the opening bell, walmart reports a Strong Quarter and a surprising increase in a certain type of shopper, and one of the Biggest Online retailers getting ready to open its first actual store. Wayfairs huge store opening next week just outside chicago. Maybe the first of many good news in general for retailers because we hear a lot of bad news about the retailers for the first time in five years, new Retail Store Openings outpaced store closures in 2022, and that trend has continued in 2023 and 2024. So even though weve seen some stores close here, yeah, in General Stores are opening. So some good news. Well have more details coming up in todays dollars and cents. Thank you for waking up with us. Im pam cook and good morning im dave clark. Its thursday, its may 16th. Steve a little cool outside our studio right now. No doubt you stepped outside is what youre saying. I stepped outside, yeah. All right. Thank you sir. Yes, except for a few locations. Sfos one that has sunbreaks most areas are saying cloudy to mostly cloudy and 50s on the temps here. A little on the mild side. Palo alto, san jose, because theyre getting a southeast breeze from the Santa Clara Valley. But theres a lot of gray out there. So when the fog rolls in and boy has it ever. The last couple of mornings here, fog burns back to the coast. Could be a little drizzle as well. Here 60s and also 70s. Well were calling all angels for a smooth commute, but i think theres something going on in hayward. There is, steve. But first i have to say, when i looked at the sky, i see a lot of fog. Youre absolutely right. Hello, ally. Its nice for her to pop into my traffic report southbound 880 at whipple. Theres that crash weve been talking about, and it is very slow as you drive from about 238 now. So this backup is growing. Its blocking a lane of the freeway. Theyre trying to move it, but its not a great place for that crash to be. Right in the middle of all that morning commute. Lets go to our triple a Traffic Camera and show you the bay bridge. You can see that traffic is backed up. There have been no major problems on the span. At 632. Lets go back to the desk. All right. Thank you. Sal. Governor newsom is at the vatican this morning as part of a summit on fighting Climate Change organized by pope francis ktvu ali rasmus in the studio now, this is not the only italian city the governor will be visiting in the coming days. Yes, first vatican city, then he will travel to the province of bologna in italy. The goal behind both visits to discuss and share ways to fight Climate Change and focus on clean energy. Now, overnight, Governor Newsom spoke to an auditorium full of policy makers and researchers from around the globe. All of them gathered in vatican city for a three day summit on Climate Change called by pope francis. Newsom spoke on the second day of the summit. The governors of massachusetts, new york and bostons mayor were also invited to attend and speak. At the end of this summit, participants will sign a protocol promising to become more climate resilient in their respective governments, and they will take that document to the united nations. Newsom spoke about californias Energy Independence and criticized the fossil fuel industrys influence on u. S. National politics, the burning of coal, the burning of gas and the burning of oil. And with respect and forgive me if this comes off a little too harsh, its been said, and ill repeat it. The polluted heart of the Climate Crisis are these fossil fuel companies that have been lying to us. They have been deceiving us. Theyve known the science. Theyve denied the science. Theyve delayed advancement. We have the tools. Tomorrow, Governor Newsom will head to bologna. Thats a province in the northern part of italy. Hes expected to sign a partnership with some local leaders there to work on ways to reach 100 clean energy and share ideas on Energy Independence. Now, the Governors Office says that that trip to italy is being paid for through a nonprofit called the california state protocol foundation, which gets its money from private donations. I remain hopeful that we will come to an agreement that is in the best interest of the students and communities we serve, while continuing to uphold our duty as responsible fiscal stewards. Our time is now 634. Were less than a day after one group of propalestinian protesters packed up their encampment on the campus of uc berkeley, a new group has taken over a University Building. Dozens of protesters went into anahid alumni hall. They broke through boarded up windows and sprayed graffiti. That building has been vacant since 2022. Right now, were not sure how many protesters are inside the building, but University Police are calling this an active crime scene. We talked with some of the students who live nearby who say theyre not alarmed by this demonstration. Im really glad that people are expressing like their opinion and are able to like, you know, voice their beliefs and everything, especially like in peaceful manners, like, its not like theyre disturbing or like disrupting or like hurting anyone. Now, we did ask representatives for the university, but they would not say if the police plan to get those people out of that building or shut down the encampment inside. Student protesters at San FranciscoState University say they are taking down their encampment after reaching an agreement with the schools president. Now, they say the school has agreed to make its investment portfolio more transparent and divest from any company that manufactures weapons. Immediately after announcing the news, protesters started packing up their tents. Student organizers say this agreement does not address all of their demands, but they call it a strong first step. The only demand that we havent currently met is declared declaring it a genocide , calling it what it is, which is still very important and something that were going to continue to work on through the summer and into the fall. The organizers also say they are working on bringing all csu students together to make a system wide change. Our time now. 636, with the artists who created an iconic sculpture at san jose state, talk to student demonstrators who set up encampments at the foot of his protest piece. You know, this statue has always been meant to be of service to you so that you could use use it for your advocacy like rigo 23 created the famous statue showing olympic track and field legends tommie smith and john carlos raising their fists in the black power salute at the 1968 olympic games. The two athletes attended san jose state. The artist told us that sculpture includes an empty spot representing student activism. This monument at the center of san jose State University celebrates the very thing thats happening right now. Tommie smith and john carlos were students here. They paid a very personal high price for the bravery of their action in mexico city. Now, the visit of the artist followed a statement by san jose state saying that tommie smith and john carlos expressed disapproval about the statue being used as part of the student encampment. However, the statement added that smith and carlos support the right to Free Expression and peaceful protest. Now, you can of course, stay up to date on the continuing campus protests around the bay area and around the country. Go to ktvu. Com and get the latest updates. A housing developer is planning to build an apartment complex nearly 300ft high across the street from uc berkeley. That project is the tallest of the three planned high rise downtown apartments, waiting to be approved by the city. Time 638 and we do have a typical backup here at the bay bridge toll plaza. It is backed up, but its an ordinary commute. Heres our triple a Traffic Camera. This is what its supposed to look like, really, on a regular thursday. If youre driving on the san mateo bridge, you can see that traffic is not ordinary. I think there might be a stalled vehicle on that span or something. I did see a truck going out on westbound 92 with the flashing lights, one of the tow trucks. So it could be that theyre removing something from the span and nearby southbound 880 near whipple, theres a crash thats been there for a while, and traffic is backed up from 238, when i look to the sky, i see overcast weather. Lets bring Steve Paulson back in here. You are correct, sir. Oh, my, my, that is true, because theres a lot out there because we have an onshore breeze and a big, robust fog bank again. So i dont see how were going to warm up too much. Most locations have a west southwest breeze. The city south of richmond, west southwest Oakland Hills out to davis point, west southwest sonoma west southwest. Even pittsburghs had a southwest so that in place, along with a screaming west wind to travis 28 west to 35. So, i mean, this is all onshore unless the wind turns northerly. I just dont see how we warm up too much here. 50s on the temps. We are mild on the lows. I mean, because were getting a south wind or southeast. So water temps have come up. So the lows have come up as well. Theres just too much gray in place here, but we could get a little local drizzle. Theres been some coast and bay. Maybe some more will develop here tonight into tomorrow as well. But when you get this big of a fog bank and that kind of a breeze, it usually spells 60s and 70s for most, unless you just dont get the fog, but maybe a little drizzle here in the next 48 hours or so, but a lot of gray over the bay as we like to say. Low overcast drizzle, fog than sun. Nice to mild if youre far enough. Inland may be warm, but i just went 6070s. When travis gets 35, thats usually means there upper 70s this time of year. A little warmer friday, back to cooler saturday, then slightly warmer sunday. Monday guys. Okay steve thank you. Time 640 well, today in antioch, the carnival rides are opening. I dont see anything on that san mateo bridge. I did see some slow traffic earlier. Triple a Traffic Camera showing us the bay bridge. And again, we like ordinary. We dont like surprises in our commute. By the way, highway 24 today is much better than yesterday. 649 lets bring steve in with todays weather. Thank you, kind sir. Well get right to it here.
