Scientists confirming there is a lot more water on the moon than they thought. Plus, middle Eastern Countries pulling french products from the store shelves. Leaders asking muslims to boycott french goods after french president macron called islam, a religion in crisis. To our viewers on pbs in the United States and to all of you around the world, welcome. We begin with germanys worsening covid19 crisis. German chancellor Angela Merkel has called an emergency meeting this week with leaders of the 16 original states in germany in the hope of slowing runaway coronavirus infections. Tough new restrictions are likely to focus on closing bars and restaurants and canceling public events. Cases in germany have almost doubled just within the last week. German officials are worried about the latest numbers coming from the countrys Public Health institute. Daily infections have reached new highs and there are more than 250 hotspots nationwide. Germany last weekend also exceeded the grim milestone of 10,000 coronavirus deaths. Now, these numbers have left chancellor merkels conservative you party to postpone a pivotal conference. The goal of the conference, which was supposed to be held at the beginning of december was to appoint a new party leader who would be in the running to become the conservative chancellor candidate in the 2021 election. The chancellor has continued to focus on the pandemic. She has repeatedly told participants to stayathome when possible. We are not powerless against the virus. Our behavior decides the extent and the speed to which the virus spreads in the order of the day for all of us is to reduce contacts and meet far fewer people. German officials recently announced new measures against the virus. They include limiting private gatherings and wearing face masks on busy streets. For me, it is obvious with the high numbers we have. I myself had coronavirus and i know what i am talking about. We all have to protect each other now. A mask does not protect aerosols. You can talk about wearing them indoors, but outside it is total rubbish. Both on the streets and among politicians, there is a growing debate about germanys as the country grapples with a serious second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Brent the situation shortly seared situation certainly serious. I want to bring in our political correspondent. The german chancellor using some Strong Language we understand in a Conference Call today. She is urging people to stay home if they can. What more are you hearing tonight . What we know is that according to a german tabloid, Angela Merkel plans to restore a lockdown light. That would mean that german shops would remain open that under certain restrictions and under this new plan that will be discussed on wednesday, with 16 state premiers, under that plan, germany would follow italys example by closing bars and restaurants. Schools would remain open in areas less open less affected by the pandemic. It is telling that Angela Merkel will meet with the 16 state premieres. This is an emergency meeting. That showed how the situation has worsened much quicker than everybody had been expecting. Brent we heard today she said every day counts. We know these new restrictions would be designed to radically reduce interactions between people. Is that what is fueling this rise in infections here in germany . Time and again, Angela Merkel said it was up to the people here in germany to limit their interactions to try to curb the number of infections, to limit contacts to avoid unnecessary travel within and out of the country. Germany had a pretty good handle of the pandemic until now. Now, cases have almost doubled within a week. There is a worry it will not be possible anymore to trace the chain of infection. The worry is the loss of control of infections. If that happens, we can worry about hospitals being overwhelmed. We are not there yet, that would be the main worry during the second wave. Brent and winter is coming. We know there is coronavirus fatigue. How will people in germany react to more restrictions . There is definitely a growing sense of fatigue. A lot of uncertainty here. There is also people who represent only a fringe of German Society who do not support all the restrictions. Yesterday, there were protesting in the streets and they also held firebombs. There are minorities. The majority of the population is abiding by the rules. They respect social distancing, they are Wearing Masks at all times. Even though there is notable fatigue among the population that is being felt. Brent more restrictions are definitely on the way. Thank you. Now to other stories making headlines around the world. Workers and students have joined nationwide strikes called bubba opposition in both called by the opposition. In belarus they walked out after Alexander Lukashenko ignored a deadline for him to step down. British police have arrested seven men suspected of trying to hijack an oil tanker in the english channel. Special forces were called in when the ship began moving a radically. The captain says the men, thought to be stowaways from nigeria, turned violent. In germany, chancellor Angela Merkels centerright christmas centerright christian democrats of postponed appointing a new leader. That person would be in the position to replace her when she plans to step down next year. Japans Prime Minister has committed to achieving zero Carbon Emissions by the year 2050. He says green reforms could lead to Major Economic growth. Pan is the latest country to set similar targets following china, the u. K. And several European Union countries. Armenia and azerbaijan are accusing each other of violating a new ceasefire minutes after it came into effect. The truce was the third attempt to end the conflict over the disputed region. Fighting flared up in the mountainous enclave four weeks ago. Tonight, we go to a city in azerbaijan where civilians have reportedly come under fire. He shows us his neighborhood on the western edge of the city. The 42yearold says there are grenade attacks everyday coming from the hills. The enclave is controlled by Ethnic Armenians backed by the armenian government. They target a different house each day. If one has not been attacked on monday, it will be attacked on the next. Most of the residents, especially women and children, fled when the attacks began at the end of september. Azerbaijan and armenia both accuse each other of having fire the first shot. The older residents used to live over there, which belong to to azerbaijan during the soviet era. The fighting over the region can be seen and heard all day long from this neighborhood. He says when he was 12, armenian militias drove him and his parents out of not going to cough. Russia and the u. S. Have unsuccessfully tried to resolve the u. S. For 30 years. There are also seven dead and injured here. It is not important. Our soldiers are important. We go with him into one of the cellars where those left behind wait out the attacks. The whole of azerbaijan according to the propaganda stands behind the soldiers. Wed at would Ethnic Armenians be allowed to stay if azerbaijan takes over the region . Opinions here are mixed. Civilians who did not fight, who did not shoot anyone, who did not take part in terrorism would be allowed to stay. We cannot live together with these hateful eminis hateful enemies. They are enemies. We cannot accept them. Turkey supports azerbaijan in this war and has sent combat drones. That is another reasons brent on this monday, u. S. Senate republicans are expected to confirm Amy Coney Barrett as the newest justice to sit on the u. S. Supreme court. Democrats oppose her nomination, that do not have enough votes to block her. Judge barretts appointment will likely submit a conservative majority for decades to come. We want to take a closer look at the woman dividing opinions across the u. S. From the moment President Donald Trump presented his Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett has been one of the u. S. Elections main figures. The 48yearold catholic and former law professor has publicly opposed abortion and says the constitution should not be reinterpreted. But at Senate Confirmation hearings, Coney Barrett said she believes judges should stay out of politics. Judges cannot just wake up one day and say i have an agenda, i like guns, i hate guns, i like abortion, i hate abortion and impose their will on the world. Have to wait for cases and controversies, which is the language of the constitution, to wind their way through the process. Democrats worry Coney Barrett would rule against the Affordable Care act and that she could hand trump another term if the Supreme Court decides the election. Under questioning by senators, Coney Barrett refused to reveal her views on major issues. Do you believe that Climate Change is happening and is threatening the air we breathe and the water we drink . I will not do that. I will not express a view on a matter of public policy, especially one that is politically controversial because that is inconsistent with the judicial role. Opponents argued a justice should not be appointed so close to an election. This vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president. Progressives have been fired up by Coney Barretts nomination, worried it could skew the Supreme Court in conservative direction for years, which is exactly what her supporters hope for. Republicans have already filled five of the Supreme Courts nine lifetime held seeds. Appointed, Coney Barrett will continue to influence politics for years to come. Brent for more, we want to go to our Washington Bureau chief. She is outside the u. S. Capitol where the crucial vote will soon be held. Is this nomination this nomination or confirmation will be a victory for President Trump. While this success translate into more votes for him next week on election day . Very possible because donald trump showed he tries to hold what he kind of told people to do and he said he will turn the Supreme Court something really conservative and that is what is going to happen with the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett. Brent during the confirmation hearings, we know judge barrett refused to be drawn on controversial issues. Could there be surprises in her decisionmaking when she is sitting on the court . We have a saying in the United States that the office shapes the man. Maybe in this case, the office shapes the woman. I think it is fair to say that we know pretty clearly where Amy Coney Barrett stands on abortion. She is absolutely against abortion. It might get really harder for women to get an abortion in this country. We also have to look back at her time when she was a trustee at the Trinity School where she was really supporting a policy against lgbtq parents. In that regard, the children of lgbtq parents were not allowed into school and teachers who were openly gay were not allowed to teach. It is hard to believe she changes these politics. Brent if President Trump spewed the results trump if President Trump disputes the results of the election next week, could we expect to see barrett and the rest of the Supreme Court if asked to judge the results of the election, will they help trump stay in office . We have seen that in 2000, gore versus bush. By the end of the day, it is the Supreme Court who can decide an election which is really close. I mean, Amy Coney Barrett very likely will remember who put her in court and that was President Donald Trump. Brent our Washington Bureau chief at the u. S. Capitol on a day when the Supreme Court is expected to get its newest justice. Thank you. Nasa Scientists Say they have found unambiguous evidence of water on the sunlit surface of the moon and it might be easier than previously thought for astronauts to get their hands on it. New Research Suggests future lunar explorers will not have to venture to the polar regions in search of water. Scientists say there is relatively accessible water hiding in the nooks and crannies of the lunar surface. More water on the moon . Yes. Life . No. That is what nasa announced at a video press conference. Scientists said they found more water on the moon than they ever thought before they shot down the idea that could mean the moon could harbor life. The discovery was confirmed by technology from its flying lab, the stratospheric observatory for infrared astronomy. The scientists said the deposits are at least partly the result of meteors that carried water and then crashed on the surface of the moon. The impact caused rock to melt and form glass beads in trapping the water, thus allowing it to survive on the moons harsh surface. Nassau also said there is perhaps more water hidden in the form of ice patches located in permanent shadows of the moon. One of the nasa scientists said it is not a lot of water. The amount is equal to one 300 milliliter bottle of water per cubic meter. And other said the water does not mean there could be life on the moon. We do not know how to mine the water on the moon yet. That is why are sending robotic instruments first to be followed by the first humans. First humans will be doing science experiments to figure out how accessible the water is. They will not be living off the water, the first explorers that return to the moon. Scientists did say if they can eventually extract enough water from the moon, it could eliminate the need to bring water on space missions. Water is very heavy and takes up a lot of room, room that could be used for other purposes. Brent i am joined by a nasa veteran and editor of the space news website nasa watch. Com. I am excited about the story. I am sure there are some people on the street who would say, what is the big deal . Are we talking about water on the moon we can drink . No. At least not until you do something to it. The amount we found it is teresting cause ring the apollo days and all the rocks were brought back, the answer was the moon is bone dry. To bed. I decade and a too bad. A ticket and a half ago, they discovered at the polls, there are regions that are always dark. For some reason, the sun does not reach them and there is ice water there. People looked at the moon and have gotten hints that maybe there is water. Now they looked at a crater down here, but the surface of the moon has water. The water is inside glass droplets that came from meteors. You cannot just scoop it up and drink it. You have to get out of there. The amount we are talking about this is a 230 milliliter flask. This much in a cubic meter. It would cost you many thousands of dollars to take this to the moon. If you send something that could extract it, it is a lot cheaper and you could use it for life support and rocket fuel. That is what everyone is excited. Brent talk to me a little about that. Taking moon water and turning into rocket fuel. How does that work . Water is hydrogen and oxygen. You split it and get liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. That is what powers manyockets these days. If you can find it up there d use solar energy to split it using hydrolysis, there is your rocket fuel. Now, you can go mine it and come back home with it or go somewhere else. That is the intesting thing. It is not just going back and forth between the eah and the moon. If you can go to a small the world and find rocket fuel, you can conceivably find easier ways to go to mars or other places in the solar system. That is the other reason people are excited. It is like a gas station. Brent does nasa have the hardware that you would need to extract the water from these crystals and then to proce it . It should be pretty straightforward to figure out. Somebody once said if you found concrete on the moon, you would mine it for water because there is a lot of water involved in the chemistry. They are going to have to go there and see if the observations by the telescope reflect what is happening on the surface. We have got to go back there. Luckily, nasa and other countries have landers being planned. Brent and what about nasas planned Human Missions to the moon . We are supposed to be going to the moon in 2024. Does this change the planning at all . I do not know. I asked that question today because before, it was like every time you asked nasa if they are where they are going to land, they would say on the south pole. That was partially because there is aatericehere. There is also the issue of being able to get a continuous supply of sunlight for power. Now that there is pretty much water apparently in many locations around the moon, he might want to rethink how you are going to do that. As tif that could happen by 2024, that is with the current ministration has proposed. Were going to have to see what happens after the election and what the winner has to say. Brent did it live up to scientists expectations . They used the word exciting. I asked o twitter if thatas exciting. I would say it exciting. Water all over the surface of the moon . Maybe not a lot in one location but all of the place . Itooks le the moon is moist. Lets go back. Brent the mn. Is moist that is the first time i have heard that before. I am exaggerating. Brent it is exciting. Editor of nasa watch. Com. We appreciate your time and your insights. Many sports leagues across the world here in germany have been up and running for some time. The German Ice Hockey League remains on hold, which means players and teams are losing patients. A team on ice. Players in berlin have been training while the German League is on hold with no set return date. Postponed another month and another month. And that is out of my control. It is up to the management and the politicians to find a solution for us to play. The outlook is bleak. Coronavirus infections are on the rise in germany. For sports like ice hockey were teams rely on ticket sales to provide up to half their budget, it is becoming a matter of financial survival. The players sufferecause the cab of the teams is calculated on the renues. If those revenues do not come in, players have to play it back have to pay it back.
