A homebound senior in Boynton Beach hoping she can get a vaccination appointment opens up after she was forced to miss her first second-dose appointment due to her health.Nancy Horan has a severe neuro-immune disease called myalgic encephalomyelitis, as well as Parkinson's disease, diabetes and other health issues. Horan, who has been homebound for the last five years, received her first dose of the Moderna vaccine at a local Publix on Feb. 2, thanks to a friend who was able to drive her to that appointment. However, she had to cancel her second-dose appointment with Publix due to health issues."I had to go to the emergency room with cardiac problems,” said Horan. She says she was placed on a steroid called Prednisone due to her cardiac issues, and her physician told her she cannot take the vaccine while on a steroid. Horan had more cardiac issues in the following days and was placed on more steroids. Her second-dose appointment, which was set for March 2, had to be postponed. Horan, as well as her friends, family and fellow church members made numerous calls, trying to book a vaccination appointment for Horan as soon as possible. At some point, Horan spoke with a Publix representative over the phone."I asked if they ever had leftovers one day where I could call at the end of the day if they had something," said Horan. "But they said, ‘No,’ they don’t do that. They have this standard procedure."Now, if Horan doesn’t get the second dose of the Moderna vaccine in the next couple days, there will be a lot of uncertainty. Right now officials with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say if people don’t get their second Moderna dose within 42 days of their first dose, that could create issues. Officials say "currently, only limited data are available on efficacy of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines administered beyond this window.”"I want to get my second one so that I will be OK," said Horan.Horan reached out to WPBF 25 News on Thursday. Since then, we've reached out to the governor's office, state representatives, the Florida Department of Health and Publix on her behalf.A spokesperson for Publix sent us the following statement on Friday:"Our team will look into this case further.""I'm thankful for (WPBF), who are willing to be there for me and my family and my church," said Horan.March 16 marks 42 days after Horan's first dose of the Moderna vaccine.
