On Sunday, Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins and Independent Senator Angus King joined a group of eight other senators from both parties, calling on Congress to certify the 2020 presidential election results. The press secretaries for both King and Collins put out the following statement: “The 2020 election is over. All challenges through recounts and appeals have been exhausted. At this point, further attempts to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the 2020 Presidential election are contrary to the clearly expressed will of the American people and only serve to undermine Americans’ confidence in the already determined election results. The voters have spoken, and Congress must now fulfill its responsibility to certify the election results. In two weeks, we will begin working with our colleagues and the new Administration on bipartisan, common sense solutions to the enormous challenges facing our country. It is time to move forward.”The statement comes in response to a group of at least 11 Republican senators who plan on challenging certification of Joe Biden's Electoral College victory during the Jan. 6 vote. Fueled by still unproven claims of voter fraud, the group of senators plan on rejecting presidential electors from states that they consider disputed until Congress creates a commission to investigate their claims of fraud. Both of Maine's senators have criticized President Donald Trump and his allies for attempting to overturn President-elect Joe Biden's election win. On Sunday, Senator Susan Collins was sworn in the U.S. Senate for a historic fifth term. Collins is the first Republican woman senator to be elected for a fifth term in the nation's history. Collins was re-elected on Nov. 3 and won by 51-42% margin over her Democratic opponent Sara Gideon.
