In the provincial government’s attempt to save $39.9 million annually “to improve services we offer youths” they have inadvertently gutted programming at Ininew Friendship Centre and negated cultural help for youth in the region.
An announcement last Monday to cease operations of 26 youth detention facilities in the province sent executive members of the Friendship Centre scrambling to inform upwards of 22 staff and residents of Mee-Quam of the impending closure of the facility.

Executive Director of Ininew Susan Nelson and Board President Desmond O’Connor were told they would have to attend an impromptu meeting Monday morning. They had anticipated it was a regular assessment meeting but were unprepared for the news. They were given less than three hours to inform staff, unions and board members.
