Weekly News Conference said to happen later this hour. We will bring it to you live. And the enemy within, secretary lloyd austin orders every branch of the military to stand down over the next two months, after an investigation of homegrown extremism within its ranks goes on. We are live with that development coming up. Im Hallie Jackson In Washington Along With Garrett Haik and former Virginia Republican congresswoman barra comstock. Garrett, let me start with you. We are expecting to see some stuff go down in the house today. You have new reporting from your team and your sources pulling back the curtain on what went on behind the scenes in that gop meeting. Reporter a fivehour meeting, House Republicans are trying to figure out who they will be in the postdonald trump era. The solution they came to for now is try to make the tent as big as possible. Room for both Liz Cheney On One Side and Marjorie Taylor green on The Other Side. Neither member will be punished or chastened in anyway by the conferencech when it comes to taylor green, sources said she tried to explain her past positions. Some describe it as an apology, some not quite, essentially backing away from the qanonand the parkland shootings. House Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy explained what she said and part of his response this way. I think it would be helpful if you could hear exactly what she told all of us. Denouncing qanon. I dont know if i said it right. I dont know what it is. Any from the shootings. She said she knew nothing about lasers and all the Different Things that have been brought up about her. Reporter i think it would be helpful if they could hear what Marjorie Taylor green said in that hearing. They would like to hear some denunciation of qanon in a public forum. That has been lacking thus far. That will lead us to this vote later this afternoon along party lines, to strip her of her Committee Assignments. That will be an unprecedented step by democrats. Republicans think its overreach. Thats the direction we are headed about 4 00 5 00 this evening. What are the chances, not to ask you a lottery question, based on your reporting, is there any possibly that Marjorie Taylor green does apologize for some of this . Reporter i think thats highly unlikely. She gave an interview with oan and backed away from the Parkland School shooting stuff. Her broader public posture has been all defiant. Theyre coming from for me, because they want to come for you. That language. Id be surprised to see a full mea culpa from the freshman congresswoman. Garrett called it a big tent. Are we not talking about a Bigger Tentt Stadium that has room for Marjorie Taylor green and liz cheney, congresswoman cheney is survived easily this other test to continue keeping her role in leadership. This is still a party of trump here. They talk about a big tent. Kevin mccarthy was down with donald trump last week. He was down in maralago Visiting Trump down there. I mean, we had the, you know, the hours after the january 6th attack, you still had a hardened 40 republicans vote not to certify joe bidens president ial victory. So, yeah, there is, cheney survived this, but there is no question about this. This is still the party of trump. I was talking to a republican congressman yesterday who wants do run for senate and the first thing this guy said to me was, you know, who is going to get the trump endorsement . Is there Establishment Lane . Is there a trump lane . Thats where this party is. So i mean, cheney survived this, yes, with mccarthys help. But there is no question that donald trump still is the most powerful and most influential member of the Republican Party. I wonder, congressman comstock, to his point, it was a Secret Ballot to keep liz clan in a Senior Leadership here. I imagine the reporting teams are working on this, there was a sizable protrump contingent, who is procheney. This wasnt a referendum down the middle on President Trump. It was cheney, herself. How do you see it . I think you saw people are moving away from donald trump. You already seen that in the senate with statements saying we have to be a postpandemic party and the people are going to be winning. I think you saw that very strongly last night with over 70 of the vote. Remember, matt gaetz and jim jordan say they have 700 signatures. That was bologna. They once again, the Freedom Caucus frequently shows its political impotence. They did that again last night. What liz cheney did was put together that big tent and the future of the party. And there are a lot of people who resent they are bullied by the Freedom Caucus and i think because they are a loud but sort of incapable movement. They cause a lot of trouble. But they dont get things done. So i think you are going to see a more of a moveaway. Marriagery green i think there will be bipartisan vote today. Not many republicans, but some, kicking her off committees. I predict eventually she will be kiblgd out of the party because she will not renounce these things. She should be on the house floor renouncing it and with a colloquy going through all of these things why she was wrong. And if she doesnt do Something Like that, shell keep making statements like she did to the Washington Examiner yesterday that were attacking republicans for not standing up for these things that are absurd and outrageous and qanon does not belong in our party. So i think eventually they will kick her out of the caucus, too. Id rip off the bandaid and be done with her. But thats the challenge that they have. But she does not represent the future and i dont think she will be reelected. Its interesting you talk about eventually. Because i have a hard time seeing how that happens before 2022. Right, be every the midterms when there is still this set of donald trump, the former president. Yep, but she wont be passing any bills. She wont be getting anything done. Nobody is going to work with her. She basically is going to come look for tv outlets, shes in the very effective there. Just like the Freedom Caucus. Most of them go on tv. They were Defense Attorneys for donald trump and they got him impeached twice. So they arent an Effective Group of people so if you want an effective majority to grow the majority, will you go with the broad consensus represented last night in the vote for liz. Thats how we get back on track and the new faces of our party, id like people to see young kim, michelle steel, the first korean women republicans in congress. People like Ashley Henson in iowa already working to get people back to schools. We have a lot of new governors and new faces of our party and this is not going to be one thats going to be around long. Where does this leave then Kevin Mccarthy . You saw Speaker Pelosi with that statement out last night, often, a formal print language that you put rcalifornia or whatever the party. She put qcalifornia. Mccarthy is saying i dont know what qanon is or how to pronounce it. Where does this leave the Minority Leader . You have comstock talking they may move on without the Marjorie Greens of the world and donald trump v calling having Phone Conversations with congresswoman green at the same time. We have stopped 10,000 National Guard troops up here guarding the capitol a month after it was raided by trump supporters. So were a long way from moving past trump. Look, mccarthy has to walk the line here. He needs trump not to attack his members. Mccarthy wants to be speaker in 2022. Thats his number one goal. Thats what he wants more than anything. Hes wanted this for eight years, six years now. He almost became speaker in 2018. He really wants to be speaker in 2022. To do that, he needs trump to stay out of the primary and not defeat his members or not fund opponent, potential opponent so he needs to walk the line between trump and he needs to get back into the suburbs where you know there was a lot of concern about the qanon movement. That violence we saw on january 6th. So hes going to, you know walk a narrow road trying to see if there is a future Party Without trump or without some of the more violent elements that trump inspired even if trump is not responsible for what they ultimately do. Garrett, 30 second left. Final thoughts to you. Well, Congresswoman Comstock has won more elections than i have. Down in Marjorie Greens is the one of the ten most districts in the country. I think being on television and combative in Donald Trumps favor may be enough to protect her down there. Republicans are so close to the majority. They can smell it. They can get redriktd into the majority. They are trying to walk a very fine line the next yearandahalf. Cigar ret no, you made a good point. Redistricting could put her in jeopardy as well. Thank you all. For a lively conversation as always. Thank you again. I appreciate it. Well see you soon, this story, of course, is not going anywhere. Even as the Republican Party is confronting extremism. In its ranks, so is the pentagon with a standdown order. Not a term were used to hearing for the entire u. S. Military. But that is the direct order coming from the top. Secretary of defense lloyd austin. He is ordering a pause of operation in the next 60 days to let each branch deal with extremism and White Supremacy within its ranks. Kevin, big news overnight. Right. Its extraordinary. Its triggered, in large part, entirety, by the January 6th Insurrection and the reports coming out, extremism, some of the people who showed up with ties to the military. Reporter yes, this is a buildup not just of january 6th, in the last year, the black lives matter protests and faceoff with proud boys and the more we learn about them, the more we see there are higher numbers of veterans and military and experience with knows groups. So you know, extremism is the ranks is not a few issue. Neither is extremism in the general population. I was looking back at a story i wrote in 2009 about a facebook for fascists that was created about The Law Center had found where even back then you found people boasting about their open extremist views, while in uniform. It was like a fake facebook for extremists. What is different now is this pause. All units across the world are supposed to take a day and have conversations and report up the chain. Already, though, what reporters are asking and a lot of skeptics are asking is, so what . What happens then . Military leaders have been saying for decades they have a problem in the ranks. They know they have a problem in the ranks. And similar to the rise and racism. So what will you do about it . What can be done about it . Right now the pentagon is saying they dont have enough data to figure this out. Thats what they are hoping to get to. How does this actually work . What hard evidence would the secretary have to see to first of all order Something Like this . What do you you need to take actual action . What is the tangible piece that comes out of this . Reporter it depends on what are you looking for, starting with recruiting, john kirby, the old press secretary who is back, makes a point of saying, when recruits walk in, if you flagged something in their past, on their online history in their own words, often that data is collected by the fbi, someone else that did the screening. Not necessarily in the military. Or it might be in the army, not the navy. And theyve already found all the Different Services had different ways that they screen. There is no rulebook. There is no ask this question and if they posted this many times and the army and the military is also grappling with free speech. If you are not in the military yet, you can say a lot more things than you can in the military. Once you are in, though, there are pretty strict rules. There are things they say you cant have extremist views. Those arent defined. What if are you a fan of marriagery green . Are you an extremist . Well, if are you a member of the proud boys in canada, you are considered a terrorist. Not here. There are a lot of questions to be ironed out. Great points, great questions. I know you will be among those in the Pentagon Press corps working to get to the bottom of them. Thank you very much. Coming up here, its gop politics, you have democrats Ploug Plowing ahead with their covid plan. And the left when of the party is now putting on the president s plate, possibly setting up what could be his first crash with progressives. Plus, on the impeachment of donald trump, we are talking with the lawyer from the last impeachment. His advice this time around. S t. [ engines revving ] its amazing to see them in the wild like th shhh. [ engine revs ] for those who were born to ride, theres progressive. Think youre managing your moderate to Severe Ulcerative Colitis or Crohns Disease . I did. Until i realized something was missing. Me. My symptoms were keeping me from being there for him. Dont start humira if you have an infection. Be there for you, and them. Ask your gastroenterologist about humira. With humira, remission is possible. Tmobile is upgrading its network ask at a record pace. Logist about humira. We were the first to bring 5g nationwide. And now that sprint is a part of tmobile were turning up the speed. Upgrading over a thousand towers a month with ultra capacity 5g. To bring speeds as fast as wifi to cities and towns across america. And were adding more every week. Coverage and speed. Who says you cant have it all . This is an urgent leadin. We need to act big. We have to make sure that we provide a bridge so that people arent scarred indefinitely by this crisis. The president would really like to get to do this on a bipartisan basis. That, of course, is secretary janet yellin this morning. In her first interview since being sworn in as Treasury Secretary, as the first woman Treasury Secretary over on gma. You heard her there echoing President Bidens call to go big on his 2 trillion relief plan. The House Voighted along party lines overnight to move forward with the process that would require simple majority vote, meaning, they could move ahead with no republican support if they had to. And next hour, actually in just about 40 minutes or so, democrats will have their own message for President Biden. Go big on something else, canceling Student Loan Debt. They are pushing him to get up to 50,000 in Student Loans altogether. Leeanne caldwell is on capitol. What is the process for covid relief, it seems that train is leaving the station with or without republicans on board . Reporter thats right, it is leaving the station. Its basically at its first stop to move this process forward. Joe biden has said Behind Closed Doors that he wants members to not only go Big But Go Fast and that is exactly what theyre doing. But also Behind Closed Doors, he has indicated that there are, programs, some areas of compromise around these direct stimulus checks. He doesnt want to change the top line number of 1,400 per person. But he is open, according to sources, that he could change the eligibility. So making it more targeted. So in reality, fewer people would get it. But staffers in both chambers are starting to write the actual legislation of this covid relief bill as we speak. Theyve got a week and a half to do it before we could see some more legislative texts. But then as you mentioned, there is this other fight thats brewing regarding Student Loans. Chuck schumer wants 50,000 of Student Loans cancelled. Let me step in there. Yeah. Only because we are showing people Chuck Schumer on the left side of your screen. You are on the right side. Its because the Senate Majority leader is announcing that tonight is going to be that vote in the senate on what leeanne was talking about. She doesnt know, she is talking with us. Our producers are looking to senator schumer. I wanted to make sure you had that information. Obviously, as we talked about, the train is on the track. Let me go back to this student loan issue. This is something else. There is a lot of interesting pieces to this. Number one that its happening. Right. You got a group mostly led by progressives looking to push President Biden to chance em, to forgive Student Loan Debt by Executive Order. There is questions whether he can do that, whether hes allowed to unilaterally cancel debt like that and the involvement of Chuck Schumer alongside you know senator warren and members of the socalled squad, et cetera. Reporter there is a lot of politics going on here with this new proposal. Of course, senator warren, this has been a huge priority of hers and she is pushing the president to do it by Executive Order so that congress doesnt have to act. So there are a lot of questions on the he can actually do that. And he hasnt committed to doing so. But the fact that Elizabeth Warren and ilhan omar and other people of the squad are holding a Press Conference in just about 30 minutes is significant. The policy for schumer is he is up for reelection in 2022. There the a lot of speculation that alexandria ocasiocortez who of course is much more liberal than schumer is going to primary him in his reelection. So he is standing out there with the squad, with Senator Warren To Push President Biden on canceling Student Loan Debt. Halle. Essentially setting up maybe one of the first fights weve seen, the progressive media, how that shakes out. Leeanne, thank you. We are staying close to capitol, waiting for nancy pelosi to talk to reporters, including some of my colleagues this hour. We expect that to begin in just about 20 minutes. In the meantime, all eyes here are on President Bidens first Policy Speech today. We are taking it overseas live for what more leaders are hoping to hear. Can you spot whats missing from this supermarket . Its new nbc news exclusive Video Lighting up social media this morning. Wait until you see how the stores owner responds. Wait until you see how the stores owner responds you dont think masks work and the virus is not a real thing . I know masks work and the virus has not killed 400,000 people in this country. Because the best trip is wherever we go together. In just about three hours from now, President Biden will visit the State Department and deliver his first major Foreign Policy speech as president. You know leaders from around the world are going to be watching. The president expected to focus on reestablishing American Leadership world wide after four years of Donald Trumps America First agenda. The New York Times says the president will announce a significant increase in the number of refugees allowed into this country. Quote, the president is poised to lift the cap to allow in tens of thousands more people before the end of the 2021 fiscal year in september. It comes after the Trump Administration spent years guiding the resettlement system. I want to bring in bill neely, who was in london for more on this. So given the Foreign Policy challenges facing the Biden Administration right now. Bill, whats your sense of what the, you know, macrons and merkels and trudeaus of the world need to hear from him today . Reporter well, first of all, its interesting where hes giving the speech. Its not at the Department Of Defense or cia headquarters. Its at the State Department. Thats a message that diplomacy matters. That matters, too, to macron to murkel, to Boris Johnson and all the rest. I think it breaks down into, i was thinking about this. Its the rword and lots of them. Its respect. America allies want to be respected again, not just pushed aside or insulted or disparaged. They want to see americas leadership in the world restored. They want america to reengage. They want to repair relationships with the United States because these relationships are absolutely vital. So thigh will be listening to who we expect which is the theme of restoring, another rword, restoring americas role in the world. But you know, all that prodemocracy, prohuman Rights Rhetoric that we have been hearing from the Biden Administration hit the hard reality of the global road just this week in two places. Russia with the jailing of alexei navalny. So what does the United States do next . Sanctions against who . Against the state . Against individual . Sanction clearly havent reversed russias a annexation of crimea. Thats one. Number two is the Military Coup of the elected leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi and myanmar. Why does this matter . It matters, because china is the chief challenge joe biden has. What does the United States do . Does it impose sanction against myanmars military generals . It can. That might simply drive them pack into the arms of china, which wants to reestablish its hegemoney over a country like myanmar. These countries are noble, theyre varied. We havent even talked about iran, which is the chief challenge of the middle east. So in london, and paris and berlin, theyll be watching. They will also be watching in the places where americas difficult friends live in saudi arabia in turkey. They will be watching for any withdrawal of american support and funding. And chiefly theyll be watching in beijing and in moscow for any signs. And we think it will be a very Different Administration from Donald Trumps. Bill neely live for us there with that great breakdown. Thank you much. I appreciate it. We have a couple nbc news exclusives on the pandemic front. First, our reporting first here on nbc that the Biden Administration is talking about a plan to send masks directly to all americans. Thats a source familiar with the discussions and the covid19 response team. That has come up in top meetings among top Health Experts, especially if the president keeps telling americans, use masks, wear your mask as a primary defense of the spread of the virus. Reporter good morning. In Collier County where i am this morning and in nearby naples as well, there are mask mandates that require people to wear a mask when they go inside a business. The video we shot, i can tell you there were dozens if not hundreds inside that store. The vast majority were not Wearing Masks. The seed the table market, shows employees and customers young and old almost entirely without masks. The sign out front outlines, if you have a medical condition that prevents you from wear ac mask, are you exempt and we cannot legally ask you about your medical condition. The owner made it clear, this is about much more than that. You dont think masks work and the virus is not a real i know masks dont work and i know the virus has not killed 400,000 people in this country. That is total hogwash. Reporter in fact, the u. S. Covid death tool exceeded 450,000 and Health Experts have been adamant Wearing Masks have saved countless lives. Probably the most important thing, we seen mask use up over 85 . Thats been a critical part of getting these numbers down. Inside this supermarket, lines of uncovered faces prompting mostly heavy criticism. I cant stop watching this. My jaw is literally on my desk. This should be a crime. People across the country are dying because of behavior like this. And from a Woman Mourning her fathers death from covid, this makes my stomach turn and my heart sink. The horse cant be led to water, even though a tsunami is heading its way. Oaks is well known for his conservative and often controversial viewpoints and rejects the data around the deadly pandemic. Why dont we shut the world down because of a heart attaining . Why dont we lock down citizens because of Heart Attacks . Reporter seed to table market is in Collier County, which narrowly voted to have a mask mandate. Its very disappointing and concerning. The biggest fear is our numbers start to increase very rapidly and our hospitals get overwhelmed. Reporter a concern shared by people watching across the country, looking at a stunning representation of covid19 neglect. Its notable the Business Community here in naples didnt lobby the local government. They dont want to be the bad guys. Many are worried about their health and safety and go. Ron desantis vaccinated at least 3. 1 million senior, he thinks its closer to 3. 5 million. We seen an aggressive rollout, in publix, large Sports Stadiums as well like the Hard Rock Stadium in the miami area. Most of the people in the supermarket certainly are older floridians. Halle, back to you. Of course, Sam Brock Reporting for us from there in florida. Our thanks to sam for that back here in walk, new charges in the investigation into the capitol insurrection. The Justice Department revealing conspiracy charges against two more people, describing plans, the Election Results count. One identified as a selfproclaimed leader of the proud boys chapter. Another proud boy in Custody Facing charges described by prosecutors as a chief organizer of a mob of 100 other members of the group that marched through washington landing at the capitol building. A close eye on all of it, of course, as the case is built for next weeks Impeachment Trial so let me bring in msnbc Analyst Daniel goldman. You recognize from the last impeachment inquiry. Great to have you back on the show. Good morning. Reporter good morning, how are you . So lets talk strategy here. You are one of the few people on the plan wloet knows what its like to try an impeachment case against any president , specifically donald trump here. The Defense Lawyer thinks these plans laid in advance can help their defense by suggesting, hey, maybe donald trump was not the inciting force. How do you think that argument plays out . Is there something to that . No, its a dreadful argument. What it basically is arguing that what donald trump did was actually worse than what he was charged with. Sometimes in criminal cases you will see a highly technical argument like that saying where a Defense Lawyer admits the defense did something wrong, but he didnt meet the elements of that crime. There are no elements here that the senate is going to weigh and by saying that donald trump wasnt the actual inciteer, that it had been premeditated and pre planned already, sidenote as Donald Trumps request and suggestion and urging, but that, therefore, he didnt incite them. Its legally wrong because he can still incite a plan to occur and just as a matter of tactics, it seems like a terrible idea to put donald trump more in the center of a premeditated plan to storm the capitol. Im not going to ask to you reveal your sources. I will ask you if you are talking to folks, perhaps on the House Democratic side. Because one thing we still dont know is what the structure what the rules are going to be . That was something i am sure, as you all remember, was an issue last time around or at least something that was obviously a sticking point. Whats the holdup now . Does that strike you as unusual . Reporter it doesnt strike me as that unusual. As you may recall from last time, Mitch Mcconnell rolled out the structural, procedural resolution. I think less than a day before the trial was set to begin and as you well know, from watching whats been going on, its taken weeks to just put together an Organizing Resolution for the entire senate. So im sure there are discussions in the background about how to structure this and what is going to be most important in those conversations i think for democrats, what other Business Done in the morning, lets say, and then have the trial in the afternoon. Im sure that would be their preference, so they can move confirmations through and so they can deal with other issues. But what i would expect is that there will be equal time given to both sides to present the case. I think because of the practical realities of what is required for to have witnesses and additional evidence that even though we would like that and im sure the democrats would like to dig in a little bit further, the practical realities make that very difficult. Because it will prolong the trial by weeks, if not months. So i would expect you to see a relatively similar presentation to what we put together, an audio visual presentation, but this time, rather than relying heavily on Witness Testimony as we did the last time, youll see real life footage. Real speeches at the elimbs, parler video, social media texts. Theyll weave together a powerful emotional narrative that we were unable to do last time because ours were essentially witness statements. So i would expect the presentation to be more powerful than what we were able to put forward last time. Daniel goldman, thank you for being with us. It is an interesting perspective for sure. I hope you come back next week. One ally, the proud boys is made a terrorist organization. Senate Foreign Relations chair senator Robert Menendez will join us live, why thats not the case in this country. Up next, the state with a governor, lt. Over at the white house, we are keeping an eye out on the first major Policy Speech, now higher stakes after myanmars takeover and russias violent crackdown on protesters. All of it setting up real tests really soon for the Biden Administration. We are also watching for House Speaker nancy pelosi to speak in the next five minutes, we think. Thats the scheduled start time. You know how things go. On removing Marjorie Taylor green from her Committee Assignments after a Republican Leadership declined to act. Let me bring in senator bob menendez of new jersey. Good morning, chairman menendez, great to have you on the show. Great to be with you, halle. Let me start with President Bidens speech, is there any expectations you will be notified about we will see something tangible on that perhaps in the form of a message aimed directly at russia and actions given, of course, the imprisonment of navalny . Well, i think what we can expect from President Biden is, first of all, a commitments to restore the State Department and the morale and the personnel and the experience at the State Department, which has been decimated under the Trump Administration. And we saw that in the context, for example, the zwishd distinguished ambassador jovanovitch, to have allies and common cause and that will include both confronting and competing against china and it will include, i believe, as it relates to russia, certainly with the reimprisonment of mr. Navalny and their interference with our own elections with bounty on american troops, just to mention a few. So, how much time then you mentioned, obviously, the issue of russia. I know you have been urging the Secretary Of State to put sanctions on russia. How much time does the Biden Administration have to take action if the white house wants to reestablish a strong position on the world stage . Well, i think theyll have to set up the bases for, when we levy sanctions, particularly through the Treasury Department and other elements, we have an Information Session that determines the facts, so that those sanction can be upheld, both in our courts and global opinion. So i think they have a fairly sufficient amount of time to do it. But the sooner that we send putin a message, that he cannot with impunity violate the international order, the better off we and the world will be. Because right now, whether its a Chemical Weapon Attack against his opposition and what he did with mr. Navalny or whether it is the invasion of ukraine or annexation of crimea and what he is doing in syria is affecting trying to affect our elections, european elections. He only understands strength. Thats why i believe the Biden Administration will have, hopefully sooner rather than later, a response. Something else is playing out on the noble stage, of course, what happened here, the capitol insurrection, the ongoing investigation, we said multiple proud boys members facing charges for what happened. That evolving picture is partly why canada has now designated the proud boys a terrorist organization. Senator, do you think the u. S. Should do the same . Well, look, we had our department of Homeland Security raise alerts about domestic terrorism and White Supremacy. Its interesting when our neighbors to the north, of which we have a long and prosperous history with, looks over the border and looks at the proud boys and says thats a Terrorist Option i think we have to speak with the same clarity, i hope that they will ultimately say very clearly, who are the Terrorist Organizations within domestic Terrorist Organizations within the United States designate them as such and were to make sure they do not hurt our democracy or our people. Senator, it sounds like if dhs does that, you would be supportive of such a move . Absolutely. I would be supportive of such a move. Look, the violence that took place on january 6th was pretty amazing. On The Other Side of the capitol from where you are, we are getting word of something going on in the House Republican conference. It has an impact on congress as a whole. We are hearing now in about 90 minutes, debate will begin on congresswoman Marjorie Taylor green, whether to strip her of her Committee Assignments. The congresswoman says she realized what she said was wrong for comments previously. She apologized. How does that response you think reflect on the Republican Party as the house gets ready for this vote to strip her of her committees today . Well, i this i that my colleagues and friends in the Republican Party have to decide, are they the party of the traditional small government and less taxes and, you know, International Security for the United States or are they the party of Qanon Conspiracy Theorists and supporting those that ultimately attacked the Capitol On January 6th . They had to decide what course they are on and what they stand for and thats what i really believe is involved with marriagery taylor green. She embodies all of those things that i think are as it relates to the values that we hold as a nation, regardless of party. And so i would expect the Republican Party would have acted more decisively in the absence of them doing so, i understand why the house feels compelled. Its an incredibly, having served in the house and served as the House Democratic caucus chair when i was there, its a significant step for the majority to take that vote. But thats how consequential her remarks are and what it means to have somebody on the Education Committee who says that what happened at parkland was just an absolute lie. All right. Before i let you go, i have to ask you about the covid relief bill. I know you are in that meeting with President Biden yesterday. He seems to be committed to keeping the stimulus direct payments at 400. Maybe there is wiggle room on targeting that in a more specific way. Would you be willing to make that compromise if it meant that you could get some republicans on board . Yeah. I think the president expressed himself very clearly. He wants big and bold, but how, in fact, do you use the big and bold resources that the president calls for, which i totally support can be considered. Do you tailor the 1,400 to those who are not in the Hiring Income Brackets . You do make sure as you emphasize quite several times, but you got to care of the middle class and understand what the middle class is in different parts of the country. Do you tailor other relief in a certain way . He is open to that. The president s proposal has broad bipartisan support in the country. We would like to see our republican colleagues join us. 600 billion is a little less than a third of the way of the big and bold, robust plan to restore the economy, to get this Vaccination Program widely distributed and finally beat covid and the economic consequences. Its great to see you. We appreciate your time. Nancy pelosi is about ready to take questions from reporters. We are keeping an eye on that ahead of todays vote on Marjory Taylor greene. One thing they didnt flip, control of georgias state capitol. Republicans control the governorship. Both the chambers of the state legislature, Attorney Generals Office and Secretary Of States office. Now, they are using the power they still have to move to reign in those very same Voting Expansions that helped boost democrats to those rare victories. Gop lawmakers introducing a package of bills that would ban things like automatic voter registration, no excuse absentee voting, the package would really restrict who is eligible to vote absentee. As of this morning, would move the deadline to request Absentee Ballots to ten days before an election. Let me bring in tia mitchell. Good morning to you. Thanks for being on. Good morning. Let me play some of what senator warnock had to say about the proposed changes last night with joy. You see that as a result of what we achieved in january, the Georgia State legislature is busy right now. If they dont like the outcome, they should change the rules. Georgia republicans are saying this is about addressing voter fraud. As a lot of people know, there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud in november or in january. Can this be seen as anything but a response to the Turnout Surge that democrats saw at this point . I think people who are looking at this with as objectively as possible frankly, some republicans have even said this Behind Closed Doors that this is about limiting the reach of the democratic party. Republicans know that the easy it is to vote and the more access you give to expand the voting pool, the more success that democrats have. So some republicans have decided that the best plan of action to help republicans win in georgia and other places is limiting access to voting. Do you get any sense, based on your reporting, that theres pressure from former President Trump, his supporters, politically on lawmakers in georgia to make these moves given what we heard from donald trump over the past several months . I dont know how much direct communication theyre having with the trump world. This is still the ongoing affects of former President Trump spreading the misinformation and disinformation that the election was stolen from him and that there was fraud. A lot of these lawmakers bought into that false narrative, and thats where you are seeing that package come from. Even though theres no proof, theres no evidence that georgia elections were not run safely, because trump and his allies said so, there are lawmakers in the georgia General Assembly who are repeating that and building legislative proposals based off of that. We just saw numbers showing that perhaps that is not where the people of georgia, the locals actually want this to go. We so appreciate your reporting and being with us this morning. Thanks to you.
