Islamaphobia. To all of you hurting, i want you to know i see you, you belong, and i want to say this to you, youre all american. Youre all american. You are all americans. That is part of President Bidens address to the nation from the Oval Office Last night. The president also called on all americans as well as congress to continue to support ukraine and israel in the vastly different wars each is fighting. Meanwhile, theres somehow even more republican led chaos on capitol hill. A third vote is now scheduled this morning on jim jordans bid to lead the lower chamber, and this comes as the temporary speaker is now threatening to resign. Well go through all of that just ahead, and were going to get expert legal analysis on the surprise guilty plea for one of the many defendants in the Georgia Election interference case. Good morning and welcome to Way Too Early on this friday, october 20th. Its friday. We made it. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day with us, and well begin this morning a busy one with the president s Rare Oval Office address. Last night in prime time President Joe Biden urged americans to support both israel and ukraine in the respective wars that theyre fighting. The president also announced plans to ask congress as soon as today for 105 billion in Military Assistance for both countries explaining that it is critical to our own national security. I know these conflicts can seem far away. Its natural to ask why does this matter to america, so let me share with you why making sure israel and ukraine succeed is vital for Americas National security. You know, history has taught us when terrorists dont pay a price for their terror, when dictators dont pay a price for their aggression, they cause more chaos and death and more destruction. They keep going. And the cost and the threats to america and the world keep rising. And if we walk away and let putin erase ukraines independence, would be aggressors Around The World would be emboldeneded to try the same. The risk of chaos could spread in other parts of the world. In the indopacific, in the middle east, especially in the middle east. Iran is supporting russia and ukraine, and its supporting hamas and other Terrorist Groups in the region and will continue to hold them accountable i might add. President biden also addressed the recent rise in antisemitism and hate incidents both here in the United States and Around The World. Take a listen. When i was in israel yesterday, i said that when america experienced the hell of 9 11 we felt enraged as well. While we sought and got justice, we made mistakes. So i cautioned the government of israel not to be blinded by rage. And here in america let us not forget who we are. We reject all forms all forms of hate whether against muslims, jews or anyone. Thats what great nations do, and we are a great nation. Well have more on the president s speech later in the show. Were also learning more this morning about the Hospital Blast in gaza city on tuesday. The Palestinian Health ministry has now revised its reported death toll from over 500 death to just over 470. But in an unclassified assessment drafted yesterday, u. S. Officials said they believe the explosion more likely killed between 100 and 300 people. They add that the explosion was likely caused by an errant rocket or missile launched caused out by the Palestinian Islamic jihad. The officials did not share what intelligence led to their own estimated death toll, but they note it still reflects a staggering loss of life. This all follows the Terrorist Incursion into israel nearly two weeks ago resulting in the deaths of hundreds. In the time since israel has leveled the buildings in gaza as part of its stated goal to target Hamas Terrorists ahead of a potential ground invasion, and it might happen very soon. Israels Economy Minister told nbc news yesterday israel has the green light to begin the operation. Meanwhile the United Nations has called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict to break an Aid Truck Bottleneck at the rafah crossing in egypt, which provides access to into gaza from the south. Trucks have lined up for the past day after israel said it would allow humanitarian aid by way of egypt, but those trucks have yet to be let in as israel and egypt reportedly disagree on logistics. The New York Times reports it includes how to institute aid convoys, how to fuel, and how to screen for arms. Yesterday at a News Conference the u. N. Secretarygeneral pointed out civilians there have gone without food, water, medicine, or fuel for nearly two weeks. President biden said opening a corridor was a key part of his trip to the region and nothing has happened yet. Joining us now from tel aviv, israel, nbc News Senior National Correspondent Jay Gray. Good to see you. Lets talk about the pending groundivation. We know its been approaching. Clear signs yet, but it could be a matter of days. Whats the latest there when we think itll begin . Yeah, jonathan, i think the biggest question in the region right now is will humanitarian tanks or aid trucks make it into gaza first. Right now neither is moving, but it does seem that Ground Assault is getting much closer. We heard from israels Defense Minister Yesterday and im quoting here you saw gaza from afar, soon youll see it from inside. Hes telling that to troops amassed along the border with gaza and preparing to move in. We heard from Israeli Defense forces today they say the pace of attacks in gaza right now from the air is something theyve not seen in decades. Hundreds of strikes overnight into the day here today, and forces on the ground they say are preparing for that next phase. What we have heard reported in the region is that government has now given the okay for the Ground Assault and it is now up to the military to decide when to go in. So its going to be something that is its been pending. Weve been talking about this for days, jonathan. It seems like the intensity is changing as far as thats concerned. Nbc News Senior National Correspondent Jay Gray live for us from tel aviv. Thank you, be safe. Well have much more on the situation in israel later in the show. But right now we turn to a major domestic headline. One of former president Donald Trumps staunchest allies made a surprise guilty plea in the Georgia Election interference case. Sidney powell, who was a member of trumps legal team in his quest to overturn the 2020 election, pleaded guilty yesterday morning to six Misdemeanor Counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference in the performance of election duties. These charges mostly relate to powells part in breaching Voting Equipment in a Rural Georgia County in january of 2021. As part of the plea deal she was ntced to six years of probation and will have to pay 6,000 in fines and nearly 3,000 in restitution to the state of georgia. Powell will also have to turn over all documents related to the ce and write an apology to the stes citizens. Powell has also agreed to testify against the remaining codefendants in the case including trump himself as well as his former lawyer, rudy giuliani. Now, powells sentence is significantly less severe than what she could have faced if found guilty during a trial, which was set to begin next week. Powell, who youll recall, appeared in News Conferences spread massive election information and deemed herself the kraken was a frequent white house visitor after the 2020 election. She dealt directly with trump and giuliani, and trump at one point considering naming her as Special Counsel to investigate alleged voter fraud. Joining us now former u. S. Attorney and an msnbc contributor, our friend barbara mcquade. Barbara, lets talk about the deal itself first. What do you make of it . Were you surprised . And what do you think of its terms . Reporter i was surprised only because Sidney Powell has been such a vocal supporter of donald trump and such a vehement denier of these charges. But so often this is something you see on the eve of trial. That is the moment when the defendant really needs to make that decision, and so its not unusual to see plea deals that come on the eve of trial. The terms of this are really quite lenient for her. No prison time. Six years of probation is a long time, but based on what she could have faced, up to 20 years for the rico conviction, it is in many ways a sweetheart deal. But the government is getting something very substantial in exchange. Not only do they not have to go through all of the burden and risk of taking her to trial, but they get what is really valuable here. That is an early cooperator. Just as we saw scott hall get a similar kind of deal a few weeks ago when he entered a guilty plea, now we see this one. And why this matters so much for prosecutors is they often use the analogy of dominos. So the scott hall plea deal which had some Cooperation Requir there likely helped secure the powell deal. Now that theyve got the powell deal, that could very likely secure the guilty plea of others. So barbara, lets talk a little more about that cooperation. I mean she was there. She was on the inside of so much of this. What do you think this means for others in this case particularly donald trump . Reporter i think this is something that should be very concerning to all of them because not only is she involved in some of the things she was charge would which is tampering with Voting Machines in coffee county, but she was in those rooms where these conversations were occurring about strategy, for example that december 18, 2020, meeting in the oval office really significant moment in the case. As you mention thats where they discussed using the military to seize Voting Machines, appointing her to be Special Counsel, and it was after that meeting which got quite heated according to the testimony of some of the people who testified at the january 6th hearings, it was after that very late at night that donald trump sent that tweet about come to washington on january 6th, will be wild. So whatever happened in that room is really fascinating, and Sidney Powell was there and can talk about it. Such a Big Development here. Were going to have much more about it throughout it morning. Thank you for starting us off, former u. S. Attorney and msnbc contributor barbara mcquade, well be speaking to you again down the road soon. Reporter still ahead here on Way Too Early, well give you an update on the u. S. Army private, remember him, who fled to north korea. Hes now facing very serious charges back at home. Meteorologist Angie Lassman is here with more rain forecasted for the north east. Its not all bad news when it comes to the weather. For me it is. You want the good news . Sure. The good news its really nice for most of the rest of the country. You can see plenty of sunshine, itll be warm kind of summer like for a lot of folks there and especially across the south we couldee some record highs. But, yes, its the rain that has everybody upset with me once again as we head into friday, saturday, and sunday. Heres what it looks like right now. The good news for folks in the midwest and especially the great lakes were going to see that moving out so youll start to dry out. And still itll be dryer and you wont have to deal with that rain. The north east up next for dealing with the rain. Were going to see the system work further to the east. Weve got a coastal low work offshore and enhance that rain flow as we head into your friday, saturday, sunday time period. The important thing for sunday notice its quite rainly through most of the day in northern new england. Places like new york to washington, d. C. , youll see a break from that rain as we get into the second half of your saturday. Itll be dryer and wont be nice by any means, and more of the same as we get into sunday. We kind of see some of that rain wrap back around into portions of of new england. Still dealing with The Rain On Sunday even through the evening hours and a lot of spots boston up to burlingson well see a lot of that rain with us. But behind it, were going to be quite blustery and quite chilly. So that what youll get once the rain works out. No good news there if youre looking for quiet and fall conditions to go leaf peeping. We do have the potential to see some of this flooding occurring in portions of of new england. Specifically where you see the lighter red, darker red 1 to 2 inches of rain are possible with some rainfall rates. We could see flooding across that region, and theres the summer like temperatures i mentioned, low 80s in denver. Thats our afternoon high running 20 degrees above norm this time of year. Weve got Triple Digits in phoenix. Yeah, its going to be a warm one for sure. Theres the good news. If youre looking for the summer like temperatures youve got to go to phoenix. I dont want 103 either. Im hard to please. How many straight weekends will this be . This is 8 out of 10. Its extraordinary. Seventh in a row i believe. Well try better next week. Angie lassman, have a good weekend. Still ahead on Way Too Early a lot more news to get to. After two failed attempts ohio congressman jim jordan is planning to hold a third vote on his Shaky Speakership bid today. There were lots of twists and turns yesterday. Lets see if this vote will be successful. Also the israelhamas war triggers the State Department to issue a worldwide alert. Well explain exactly what that means for u. S. Citizens. Well explain when we come right back. Citizens. Well explain when we come right back welcome back to Way Too Early. It is just before 5 30 a. M. Here on the east coast, 2 30 out west here on this friday morning. Im jonathan lemire. Thank you for being with us. The path to House Speaker for republicans remains very uncertain this morning following a series of surprise and chaotic developments. First, there is a new house vote for speaker scheduled at0 00 a. M. Eastern today setting up republican congressman jim jordans third attempt to win over the required 217 votes he needs to secure the gavel. Now, this move comes about 24 hours after the ohio congressman said he would support temporarily empowering interim speaker Patrick Mchenry of North Carolina to take on the speakers role until january. That would allow legislative business to continue in the face of two wars and a looming government shutdown. Jordan said he would try again for the speakership in jan. However, within hours of jordan saying hes from mchenry it became clear in a meeting of House Republicans that there was not enough support for that concept, and the idea stalled. Since then nbc news has learned mchenry told republican colleagues during that meeting that he might resign as interim speaker if republicans pushed him to try to move legislation on the floor without an explicit vote to expand his power. Additionally, jordans meeting yesterday with the 22 republican members who voted against him for speaker on wednesday broke up about an hour and a half after it started and appeared to create little to no progress. Jordan then gave this update. Ill just say this, we made the pitch to members on the resolution as a way to lower the temperature and get back to work. We decided that wasnt where were going to go. Im still running for speaker and i plan to go to the floor and get the votes and win this race. Now, were expecting to hear from jordan again this morning at about 8 00 eastern and deliver an update to the press a few hours ahead of the new vote for speaker. Joining us now the cofounder of punch bowl news, anna palmer. Shes an msnbc contributor and like me is probably exhausted. Anna, i mean its hard to even recap what happened yesterday. Thought it was going to be jordan, then we thought it was going to be mchenry. Then mchenry threatens to quit, and now its going to be jordan again. But he still seems unsure of the votes. Recap what happened yesterday. Take us Behind Closed Doors why are we here . You summarized it really well in the sense just the chaos the House Republican conference is right now. Theyve tried multiple different strategies, right, whether theyve tried to have Jim Jordan Run For Speaker whos only lost votes, the hardening of republicans against jim jordan cannot be overstated. I think theres a massive amount of frustration among the republican conference, but you still have that right flank, the Freedom Caucus members that ousted Kevin Mccarthy that were not happy with this kind of Compromise Strategy of having Patrick Mchenry serve as a kind of a placeholder because he couldnt get to that magic 217. Frustrations are running very, very high. Theres a lot of anger right now because not only is just the Pressure Campaign we all feel, theres a sense theyre in complete disarray with no strategy. Theyre getting pressured by sean hannity and other rightwing conservatives on the outside which has never been a strategy that works. And i think the third thing more than anything is the fact you dont have any momentum by jordan. He could potentially lose votes on the house floor today, and there was a collective grown yesterday when one of the members said, hey, were going to come and vote all weekend, and not just by the lawmakers but the press corp and everyone else. And frustration yesterday with people shouting at matt gaetz blaming him for the predicament were in, someone even threatening to take a swing at him. And of course we heard last night from President Biden stressing the urgency of helping ukraine and israel. Well, we cant really do that if theres no speaker. Talk to us, anna, if you will about whats next. Theres as you just said this expectation jordan wont get to the votes he needs this morning, so what will happen then . How many more votes do you think hell put up with . And if not this mchenry solution, who else could step to the forefront to run for speaker . Its 17 days into not having a House Speaker, and as you put a fine point on it, at a time when the speaker is needed. Theres going to need to be a funding bill when it comes to ukraine funding and were less than a month away from that, the government running out of money. And so the real question people keep asking is when are they going to hit rock bottom, right, because it keeps seemingly being almost too fantastical to believe were in this place, but we are. Right now theres no other candidate that has even emerged or been kind of floated that also would be able to get that 217 number. Whether thats jody arrington, someone from texas, some people have been floating a republican from oklahoma. But nobody has a serious candidate willing to take on jordan or has the momentum of the entire conference. I think the other thing to note, though, as much as this mchenry strategy fell apart yesterday, this is a kind of moment by moment decision. And any member could bring up that resolution that could force the vote on having him have expanded powers, and so you may see that actually gain some steam here if the vote this morning is as bad as some expect. So many twists and turns ahead. Republicans such a mess right now. Cofounder of punch bowl news, anna palmer, thank you. We of course will be staying on the speakers race all day long here on msnbc. Still ahead here on Way Too Early, were going to switch to business news. Our friends at cnbc will join us to break down the latest Economic Outlook from the fed chair and how his comments are impacting the markets before the bell. Well be right back with that. Better days start with zzzquil nights. Time now for business, and for that lets bring in cnbcs Julianna Tatelbaum who joins us live from london. Julianna, great to see you yesterday. So stocks, they took a bit of a rattling yesterday after Jerome Powell spoke in new york. We had previewed that the markets were going to hang on his every word, so fill us in. What does the Federal Reserve chair have to say . Well, it was a choppy session on wall street. Ultimately all three of the major indices ended lower as you said. And investors were hanging on the fed chairs every word. I think the key line i would highlight for you is that powell didnt outline a specific policy path forward, he did comment does it feel like policy is too tight right now . I would have to say no. On the back of those kmechbts we saw Treasury Yields move higher, melt decades in many cases and that put pressure on stock markets. 10 out of 11 sectors were negative on the dead. Now u. S. Futures are pointing to further losses. Worth noting we have bounced off the lows of this morning. Perhaps a little bit of stabilization coming through. Well keep watching powells comments ahead. Home sales dropped last month to the lowest over in over a decade. We mentioned interest rates. What else might be the cause of the fall off . Interest rates seemed to be a really big part of it. And we mentioned yesterday how the 30year fixed rate is now hovering around 8 , and this is relevant because we got some existing home sales data which showed existing home sales have fallen in september for the fourth month in a row now sitting at the slowest pace or the lowest level in more than a decade. Right now the seasonally adjusted annual rate of existing home sales is 3. 96 million. Just two years ago when Mortgage Rates were around 3 ers, that number was around 6. 6 million. It just goes to show how far weve come in terms of the fall in existing home sales. These are homes that have been previously occupied. So whats happening at the fed is having a knock on effect to mortgage markets, and thats in effect having a major impact on the overall housing market. All right, lets wrap up with a slightly lighter one. There is a new top choice when it comes to where teenagers are watching videos online. I have no idea. Julianna, i hope you do. Well, im very excited to break the news to you, john. Its youtube. For the First Time Since the survey has been conducted by Investment Bank youtube has taken over netflix. Netflix apparently is where 28. 7 of teenagers who responded to the survey spend their time when it comes to daily video consumption, that compares to 21. 9 for youtube. Hulu was in third place and prime video and disney plus both gaining some momentum. Theres one caveat i would highlight, though, john, when we interpret this data, these comparisons did not include tiktok where i suspect is where really the bulk of teenagers spend most of their time. Excellent reporting from Julianna Tatelbaum live from cnbc. Please have a good weekend. Well talk to you again next week. Still ahead on Way Too Early, the State Department is now issuing a worldwide caution alert amid the israelhamas war. Department of state has issued a worldwide caution alert amid rampant tension in the middle east from the israelhamas war. Officials are warning americans traveling abroad to exercise increased caution citing possible violence or even terrorist attacks against u. S. Citizens. Earlier in the week the State Department warned americans not to travel to lebanon due to the unpredictability of Rocket Exchanges between israel and hezbollah. Meanwhile, the pentagon has now confirmed that u. S. Forces In The Red Sea shot down three Cruise Missiles and several drones launched from Yemen Yesterday potentially targeting israel. It kmds amid a rise in attacks on u. S. Troops in the region as aerial drones targeted American Military positions across syria and iraq earlier this week. Joining us now someone whos done a lot of reporting on this, pentagon reporter for politico. Perfect person to join us. Talk to us about, if you will, this string of attacks on american troops in the middle east this week and just how are u. S. Officials preparing for what could be a real escalation of violence in the region once israel goes into gaza . Well, good morning, jonathan. Thanks for having me. There has have you said been a series of attacks on american troops in the middle east in iraq and syria in particular, and also theres been an incident in the northern red sea. Whats happened on tuesday and wednesday is that american troops across iraq and syria were attacked by aerial drones coming from multiple directions. One American Contractor died of a cardiac episode while running from a false alarm at al Assad Air Base in iraq. Other troops sustained minor injuries. Then separately In The Red Sea the uss carny guided missile destroyer intercepted gliders and drones coming from the Houthi Rebels in yemen. This is something unprecedented. Weve not seen this level of violence in the middle east for quite some time, and the problem here is that american officials really wanted to keep this regional conflict from escalating, and now were seeing attacks from iranian backed proxies, the Houthi Rebels, although the president hasnt attributed any attack and its something that has happened before. Unfortunately troops are no stranger to these types of attacks in the middle east. So the pentagon has said that the u. S. Will respond if they choose to do so in a manner of their choosing. They defend their troops, but i think really at this point people are worried about an escalation. So, laura, the president last night made a link between the situation in israel and that in ukraine, both needing to defend these countries against brutal assaults. The middle east dominating headlines this week, but we shouldnt overlook and youve had great reporting on this ukraine starting to use these longer range missiles in striking russia. Give us update there in terms of the use of those missiles and also where do things stand in the counter offensive as cold weather approaches . So the big thing in ukraine week on tuesday amid all the other news this week is that the u. S. Has secretly shipped these missiles ukraine has been so long asking for ukraine finally used them on tuesday in a Surprise Attack far behind russian lines on the sea. The key here the missiles the u. S. Is sending to go 190 miles. Theyre a shorter range, older version, that only go 100 miles, and theyre tipped with Cluster Munitions which scatter and attack an array of targets on the battlefield. Pentagon officials have been resistant to sending the longrange atacms because we use them in our own plans. The solution was to send this different and older variant the pentagon no longer uses. It is something the pentagon officials hope will give ukraine an edge as were coming up to the winter here. They probably only have a couple weeks left of fighting before the winter sets in and stalls that counteroffensive. And weve seen the russians have a renewed offensive in the region, as well. Were going to see some heavy fighting here, and its not likely, unfortunately, that ukraine is going to make much progress, especially to its goals of reaching the sea by the fall, by the winter. We may see them gain some Tactical Advantage and destroy russian targets now that they have the missiles. President zelenskyy spoke with the Oval Office Last night. Look, at the same time, the president and i discussed again yet the critical need for israel to operate by the laws of war, protecting civilians the best they can. People of gaza urgently need food, water, and medicine. As i said in israel, as hard as it is, we cannot give up on peace. We cannot give up on a twostate solution. Israel and palestinians equally deserve to live in safety, dignity, and peace. That was part of President Bidens Oval Office Address last night. The president had a tight rope to walk, trying to explain why two distant wars, one in israel, one in ukraine, matter so much to u. S. National security. Also, as you heard there, urging israel to show some caution, show restraint when they head into gaza and attack at what we believe can be at any time. The president will send a major Funding Request to congress to support our allies. Joining us to talk more about it, White House Reporter for the associated press, chris, great to see you. The president said it last night, the United States made mistakes in its response to September 11th. He said, we were angry then. We understand you, israel, are angry now. But theres got to be a lot of concern here, that israel, though the u. S. Made clear has the right to defend itself and go into gaza, that it could inflame the situation more. How worries are officials that that might be what happens . Sure, american officials are very worried right now. Were right to highlight the comment that President Biden made about mistakes in the wake of September 11th. Thats a very dramatic acknowledgment for an american president to make about how the u. S. Behaved after the September 11th attacks. Then, you know, i really see what biden is doing as a twostep process involving israel. First, he is trying to show solidarity. Trying to make sure israel feels secure. Then, you know, once israel feels like it is secure, has the backing of the United States, now biden is trying to influence their next moves. Hes trying to make sure they do think things through, that they are thinking about what happens during this ground invasion, what happens after this ground invasion, and he feels like the only way theyre going to hear that message is if he shows the solidarity with them first. The president was pure statesman. There was no political shots, no mention of the chaos in the house, no mention of certainly donald trump or the 2024 race. I was also struck by the words he gave to Palestinian People but also to arabamericans, those here at home. He talked about that poor boy who was killed, victim of a hate crime in illinois. Tell us why the white house felt it was important to make that part of the speech . He called the boys family after his speech was over with first lady jill biden, as well. We saw an increased emphasis on the devastating toll this conflict has had on Palestinian Civilians in the gaza strip, and hes talked more about, you know, the fight against bigotry at home. This has been, obviously, an important issue for him. He often cites the antisemitic and racist marches in charlottesville as a reason why he ran for president in the first place. He sort of sees this as a concern that, you know, this conflict and the emotions that its arising could further inflame antisemitism, islamophobia, and he wants to send a strong message that that wont be tolerated. Chris, today, the white house is going to unveil their Funding Request for congress, over 100 billion. Its ukraine, israel, also taiwan, border security, domestic programs, as well. Break it down for us. Also, paint the obstacles ahead. It cant go anywhere until there is a speaker, and the house seems nowhere close to one. There is really no road to push this down right now. Theres no way to get this through the house without a speaker. President biden made sort of a glancing remark that we need to set our differences aside to push this forward. You know, theres not a lot of leverage for republicans to agree amongst themselves who their speaker should be. As far as the package itself, youre right, its a large one. Expecting it to be about 105 billion. About 60 billion is for ukraine, and roughly half of that amount of money is replenishing u. S. Stockpiles of weapons that have already been sent to ukraine. Looking at about 14 billion for israel. Theyve also included funding for taiwan, indopacific, border security, humanitarian efforts. The hope is that by including all these things, there is a Political Coalition that moves us forward. Also, you can run into issues when, you know, you add more things to something, and it gets weighed down. Its an open question, how theyre going to get this Going Forward the next few days and weeks. Smart point for the president last night to note that some of this was to replenish our own stocks of weapons. Better sell that to americans. It is going to be a busy weekend in the white house as they monitor the situation in the middle east. White house reporter for the associated press, chris, thank you for joining us. Thanks for getting up Way Too Early with us this friday morning and all week long. Morning joe starts right now. American leadership is what
