The Vice President needed to navigate contradictory imperatives, shore up her democratic coalition and reaching out to the all important swing voters. Handle the lies and Mania And Weirdness of her unpredictable opponent and getting her message out to viewers, under higher expectations and pressure, Kamala Harris executed all of that flawlessly. And when you then talk in this way in a president ial debate and deny what over and over and over again are Court Cases that you have lost because you did, in fact, lose that election, it leads one to believe that perhaps, we do not have in the candidate to my right, the temperment or the ability not to be confused about fact. Reporter well, first, my role in it is the kind of sexy part of it. But i really just had to focus on the left side of the screen which is him. Not just two of them they co ran it. From my perspective you just want the candidate to get used to seeing and hearing it. It was that added oddity. Nice to meet you and 20 minutes later telling her how she is ruining america. What was your approach . What is the most important things to prepare for if you are debating trump . Like, the sort of go to moves, the things that might rattle someone who has not been in the same room with him . Reporter well, i would take it a step back. Debate in itself ideal form is a job interview. You have two people who are going for the same position who want to put their experience and their best foot forward, they want to be professional, they want to think about curveballs that might come their way. We have all been in that situation. What we have not been in, the other candidate is six feet to your left and they have a chainsaw and the only way they can wins by, you know, bloodying you up. He starts out saying, you know, you completely screwed the border it has to be hold on, pal, you were there for four years you were in charge of the border and you promised us a wall and it is not there. And that has not happened enough. And it is important to lay out that case and third, i mean, for my own in terms of asking about prep, first of all, you know, we all get make up before we are on tv and the Makeup Artist here said you already have makeup on. What is particularly, i think, telling when you show these clips of his whatever you want to call them, is they make no sense. So, fine, he is not rubiks cube, not hard to figure out. He is you push one thing and he falls apart. But if you say your Crowd Sizes are low and people leave why wouldnt you say that is not true. Thereat is very mean, i am really proud, they are the biggest things what he starts doing is a different level of insanity. You are revealing it is a subset. What he is saying has never been truthful. It has never been real. It has never been normal. It is decompensating. This is what i want people to know about her right now is that she feels the urgency of the challenges before the american people. She feels very much the pain of people who are facing the stripping away of their reproductive rights. She feels an economy that many people dont think works for them anymore in america. These are issues that drive her. She is about serving this country and knows that this is a moment, not to beat Donald Trump but really where we need leaders in the plural to rise and meet it so that we as a nation can come together and move forward. And i saw that number and i was like that should be the outcome of the election. How, how am i watching this. Like that is a number that feels about right. When i watched the two of them Last Night. That is about right. Sure, 37 are like, whatever. But, like. Disturbing. I feel like a Buzz Kill but i feel like she did a incredible job. I have my own complaints and critiques but she did an incredible job, obviously won, and i share the Relief And Happiness that so many do. But i also as i said left with a bit of a chill. I remember 2016 and i remember Hillary Clinton cleaning Donald Trumps clock three times in a row. That is rare in president ial debates, even great debaters, Barack Obama had a bad debate. So, i am so thrilled, gosh, The Feeling especially the contrast with the June 27th debate and this debate it left people euphoric today. That is a good thing to feel. But i also dont think that we can let that you know obscure the fact that it is incredibly close and that he might still win and we need to think about that. Yes t. Maybe some of it is sexism or if the Voice President is a big chair, whatever it is she cleared the bar and got a lot of the voters, these are voters pretty sure they dont like trump but they are looking for an affirmative reason to get behind Kamala Harris. She gave them that reason Last Night. They, and some of them thought she introduced new information, some said i did not know about the Immigration Bill that Donald Trump started. That was something that was interested to them. For a lot of the swing voters, immigration is a place where democrats are vulnerable. They liked she was talking about small businesses and i want to emphasize that, for these voters they are right leaning independents, soft gop voters. Last night she appealed to them directly. Policies, hawkish, talking about being a gun owner, focused on small businesses. She also specifically said during her abortion answer, hey, if you want to be part of our coalition regardless of your faith there is room for you here. She talked about liz and Dick Cheney and the staffers that endorsed her and making it clear this can be a candidacy for you. On someone that works on persuading voters going against trump and for harris i appreciate she made that specific in treaty to them. You wrote this earlier today in the atlantic about the Foreign Policy party. It is interesting and complicated. Most voters will tell you it is not the top issue when you poll it, it is low but at some level when people are talking about president ial or clearing that bar there is a vague sense that relates to being commander in chief or Foreign Policy. You said voters worry about harrisability stand up to dictator. Trump was a stand in for Putin And Xi and others that i spoke to said harris held her own. Say more about that. Reporter it is interesting. People often ask, Will America Vote for a woman for president . We asked that question of these voters a lot. We do hear a lot of people say, you know, i will vote for women, for senate, for the house but i worry about the precedency because you have to deal with these dictators, bullies, leaders from other Country Rows where they dont respect women, they are worried they will not respect a Woman Leader of the United States. This idea of Donald Trump, though, being a stand in for an autocrat. How she handled him was going to be, for many voters, a signal for how she would handle the bullies abroad. And i got that from a voter. A voter articulated that. I am interested in seeing how she handles trump because he is a lot like these other bully dictators. That to me was potent, i think that is true. People wanted to see she could handle him. The dominating performance she gave Last Night was something that got a lot of them over that mental hurdle. I want to read to you. This tweet, i want to read it to you because it is worth engaging. If she wants to win harris needs to train her face not to respond. It feeds into a female Stereo Type and Risks Offender undecided voters. A lot of people are like, you know buzz off. Politely. But, you know, again, i dont know the mind of an undecided voter, maybe they feel that way. I am curious if that, that showed up for you at all . Look, i do think there is this underlying i dont know if i would go so far as Sexism Or Concern women are not tough enough. Frank is not enough to suggest times you are being overly dramatic with your face it could work against you in a situation like this where you really do want to project a kind of serious president ial demeanor. That being said i did get into it with frank because i thought Kamala Harris with her face, was restrained and was oftentimes reflecting in her face what many of us who were sitting there listening to the rantings of a lunatic. If we were standing 10 feet from him we would be making those faces and much, much more. So, i thought that, she handled it perfectly well. I certainly better in every way than Donald Trumps glowering cranky, unhinged, absolutely unpresident ial unpresident ial look. Thanks.
