It seems to us that something happened to you, the moment joe biden, president biden stepped aside and withdrew his candidacy, that something dropped and you just stepped into your power. You know, we each have those moments in our lives where it is time to step up. Time to step up. Knowing what is at stake in terms of fundamental freedoms. What is at stake in terms of fighting against hate and those efforts to divide us and i do know that i am in a position to do something about it, so i felt a great responsibility and the incredible power of the people, right, who i am not the only leader in this. This is so much bigger than me. It is about who we are as americans and it is about making clear what we stand for and what we stand for is about the ideals on which we were founded, including the importance of freedom and the importance of independence and the importance of dignity and purpose, but it is also about what we stand for in terms of our values. The livestream town hall event called unite for america focused on building coalitions, increasing turnout and energizing voters from across the political spectrum have coalesced to support kamala harris's candidacy. Political reports nearly 70 groups were invited to participate, including when with black women, that started all of this. When with black men, white dudes for harris. Black women for, and cat ladies for kamala. Kamala harris used the event to speak directly to voters. One of the most powerful moments came when oprah highlighted the story of a pregnant mother in georgia whose preventable death is now blamed on that states abortion ban, implemented after the supreme court overturned roe v. Wade. Amber thurman died in the hospital after waiting 20 hours for routine treatment the doctors feared to give her, because they could face jail time under georgia's abortion ban. Her mother's and sisters were in the audience tonight. Initially i did not want the public to know my pain. I wanted to go through in silence. But i realized it was selfish. I want you all to know, amber was not a statistic. She was loved by a family, a strong family and we would have done whatever to get my baby, our baby, the help that she needed. When propublica came to my home, i pushed them away. No. No. No. But kavitha, she was persistent. She said it was something that you needed to know. You have to hear me. Women around the world, people around the world need to know that this was preventable. Two years later, after speaking with my daughters, because i lost strength. I lost hope. You are looking at a mother that is broken. The worst pain ever. That a mother, that a parent could ever feel. Her father and myself and the family you are looking at it. We appreciate so deeply you being here and we are all watching you hear that tape and those words. We know how retraumatizing that is and the strength it takes for you to be here to tell your story and we deeply appreciate it. I have to ask you, as her sisters, how are you coping and what does knowing that this could have been prevented, how does that sit with you? how do you cope with that on a daily basis? it is heartbreaking. That was my baby sister. I love my baby sister. I am beyond hurt. I'm disappointed. I feel guilty. I wish i could've helped her because she was suffering and we had no idea. We trusted them to take care of her, you know and they just let her die, because of some stupid abortion ban. They treated her like she was just another number. They didn't care for her as if she was their daughter or, you know, granddaughter. She is not here. She will never come back. What do you want to say? i want to say that it is very disheartening that my sister was allowed to suffer for 20 hours. She suffered. There was nothing we could do to help her. We trusted the healthcare professionals to do their job and save her, but they failed her. While i think the most powerful thing that you said is that your daughter is not a statistic. She had a life. She was loved by her sisters. Loved by her family. Loved by those who knew her and she is not just a statistic and we are happy to speak her name tonight, in this room, talking about what this country needs in terms of reproductive rights and freedom. What you want to say, madame vice president? i am just so sorry. And the courage that you all have shown is extraordinary, because all so you just learned about how it is that she died and day they just recently learned, yes. And ambers mom shared with me that the word over and over again in her mind is preventable. Preventable. That word keeps coming to her and this story is a story that is sadly not the only story. Of what has been happening since these bands have taken place and you know, just to step back in terms of how we got here, the former president chose three members of the united states supreme court with the intention that they would overturn the protections of roe v. Wade and they did as he intended and in state after state, including yours, these abortion bans have been passed that criminalize healthcare providers. In a couple of states, prison for life, oprah. Prison for life in a couple of states. For a doctor and nurse who provides healthcare. And so it seems very apparent even when the mother's life is in danger. Here is the problem with that. Here is the problem with that. Is she on deaths door before you decide to give her help? that's the problem. Is that what we are saying? that you have to prove you are on deaths door. Literally a doctor or a nurse has to say she might die any minute, better give her now care because otherwise i might go to prison for life in some cases. Think about what we are doing in terms of saying that certain people who are in these statehouses and starting with the former president of the united states, that they are in a better position than a doctor or a nurse to determine when their patient needs medical care. This literally, amber story highlights the fact that among everything that is wrong with these bans and what has happened with overturning roe v. Wade, it is a healthcare crisis. A healthcare crisis that affects the patient and the profession. That will be the focus of a speech on reproductive rights that kamala harris will be giving tomorrow when she returns to atlanta, georgia. A speech that will not just focus on the story of amber thurman, but also that of candi miller who died at home. After she suffered complications from taking abortion pills to end a risky pregnancy. Her death was also deemed preventable were it not for georgia's abortion ban. The new york times reports that in her speech tomorrow kamala harris will, quote, call for restoring federal abortion rights and cite the women's death as illustrating the devastating impacts of what she calls trump abortion bans, according to the person with knowledge of her remarks. Aides say ms. Harris believes appearing at the side of these bans, rushing into the fire of weighty issues, as they describe it, is an important way to leverage the power of her bully pulpit. But georgia will not be the only states you will visit tomorrow. Kamala harris will continue her campaign swing through the blue wall states including pennsylvania and michigan, by holding a rally in wisconsin tomorrow. New state pulling from quinnipiac university shows a tight race in the blue wall states, particularly in wisconsin where kamala harris is leading donald trump 48% to 47%. In michigan she leads 50% to 45% and in pennsylvania her lead over trump is 51% to 45%. Leading unfair discussion tonight is senator tammy baldwin, democrat of wisconsin, who is running for her third term in the united states senate and will be joining vice president harris when she visits wisconsin tomorrow. Senator, thank you for coming to the last word. Let me start by getting a reaction to what you heard in that town hall tonight with the vice president. Thank you for sharing such powerful focus on the impact of the reversal of roe v. Wade. And wisconsin has very similar set of circumstances. When dobbs was decided, our state fell under an abortion ban, a criminal abortion ban that was passed in our state in the year 1849 and for 15 months there were no services whatsoever. I heard harrowing stories about women bleeding out. I met a woman who, her water broke at 17 weeks and she was sent home and was only granted service when she was spiking a high fever and facing the risk of sepsis. This strikes home with every wisconsin viewer and it resonates here and it is a reason for us to remember that we have to participate in this election. Our democracy is on the line. The rights and freedoms related to roe v. Wade are on the line as well as so many other things. Senator, you will meet with the vice president tomorrow in wisconsin. What you think is most important for her to focus on? look, we welcome her back to wisconsin and i think it shows that we really are the battleground state and if you think of wisconsin, trump narrowly won in 2016. Biden narrowly won in 2020. Currently as your statistic showed, trump and harris are virtually tied in our state. Three polls this week showed my race within the margin of error. Real clear politics switched it from lean democrat to a pure tossup and in my race, unlike my opponent who is a multimillionaire and can self fund, i cannot. A new quinnipiac polling shows you ahead of your republican opponent at 51% in the polls. What message do you have for voters with 47 days left in the campaign, besides what you just said in your last answer? well, again, i have a multimillionaire who owns a $3 billion california bank and a $7 million california home. He is bankrolling his race, but also on the issues we could not be more different. So we just talked about the critical issue of restoring abortion rights. And i lead the effort in the women's health protection act to restore those rights by codifying them into federal law and taking the additional step of telling states like wisconsin and georgia and texas and florida that they can't pass laws at the state level that interfere with the rights and freedoms articulated in row. My opponent said he was 100% opposed to abortion rights. He cheered on the dobbs decision, which means he owns the chaos that has ensued across the country, but it does not stop there. The differences go on. I helped write the affordable care act when i served in the house of representatives. My opponent would overturn it and on issues like how we would approach protecting programs like social security and medicare, i was raised by my grandparents. I saw the importance and value of those programs up close, at a younger age than most. My opponent supports a $4 trillion tax plan that disproportionately helps wealthy people like himself, big corporations. And jeopardizes the solvency and longevity of social security and medicare, so we could not have a bigger contrast on the issues in this race. Congresswoman, welcome. I would love to start with your reaction to what we saw tonight in michigan, particularly when talking about the case of amber thurman. I watched you watch that. My heart breaks. My heart breaks because i am a mother. I am a georgian. I represent the state of georgia. I was in the state senate when this bill was passed and we warned republicans, we warned our governor of the impact of these abortion bans before donald trump even overturned roe v. Wade. This was preventable. It was preventable because our governor, brian kemp, knew the consequences. We had experts and doctors who told him what would happen and he signed this bill into law anyway and donald trump when he brags about overturning roe v. Wade, this is what he is bragging about. So i blame them for these preventable deaths of these moms in my state that we could have avoided and we don't know how many more stories like this will come about because we are just catching up to the cases from two years ago where georgia already leads the nation in maternal mortality, especially for black women, so this is devastating. As a leader in this country i have an obligation to speak up about it and told those accountable who made this possible in the first place. You know there is new polling showing that vice president harris and donald trump are in a statistical tie in georgia. How are you feeling about the state of the race in georgia? so even with me being at the people who made this possible, i know that i have to be a joyful warrior and i am on the campaign trail every day because i feel the energy from the people on the ground. We understand that we have options on the ballot. There is a clear contrast and kamala harris will be president for all people and we know this issue around abortion access, it transcends partisanship. It transcends racial lines and that is exactly what her presidency would be, a president for all the people. So i am excited about her returning to georgia for the 20th time or 20 plus times since she has been vice president and i can't wait to get home and get on the campaign trail because in battleground georgia, where we only won by 11,780 votes, we know that every vote counts. Talking about crossing racial lines, watching the town hall you saw men, women, black, white, all reacting to the stories of the two women in georgia who lost their lives, preventively. Is there anything more voters in georgia need to hear from vice president harris? i think when she shows up tomorrow that goes a long way because she is coming right into battleground georgia to have conversations directly with the voters experiencing this. We know that communities that these two ladies lived in. We understand this was not just a rural georgia issue, were already half of our counties in the state of georgia don't even have an ob/gyn and yet she is coming to our state and she is talking directly to the voters that are impacted by trump's abortion bands, so that goes a long way in showing how important georgia is and her pathway to victory and we are going to do our part. Let me get you on one more thing before we go. Georgia election officials are sounding the alarm about republican efforts to change the rules. They've been changing the rules for the last several weeks, but how concerned are you about the interference and the possibility that it could have a direct and noticeable impact on the election in your state. Not just the last several weeks. In 2020 they changed the rules for our runoffs. When we won with our majority making senators, they changed the rules. When we play by the rules and when they change the rules, because they don't know how to play fair. Donald trump tried to overturn the will of the voters in georgia and now he has his pics on the state board of elections who are once again trying to change the rules. We are doing everything in our power to push against this. We have an antidemocracy majority on the state board of elections. I only get one appointment as the chairwoman of the democratic party of georgia, but we are doing everything we can with our legal team. All across the state in all 159 counties to ensure when people show up to cast their ballots those votes will be counted and certified. It says robinson made dozens of racist and sexually graphic comments on a porn forum between 2008 and 2012. The cnn report that nbc news has not independently verified says robinson, vote, referred to himself as a black nazi. In one message verified by cnn, mark robinson wrote slavery is not bad. Some people need to be slaves. I wish they would bring it, slavery, back. I would certainly buy a few. Cnn also reports many of robinson's comments were gratuitously sexual and lewd in nature. He reportedly describes himself as, quote, a perv and describes peeping on women in public showers. The comments which robinson denies making were made under a username that cnn was able to identify as robinson by matching a litany of biographical details and a shared email address between the two. Ahead of this story today, robinson posted a video denying the allegations and accusing the campaign of josh stein, his opponent in the race for north carolina's governor, of leaking the story. Let me reassure you, the things you will see in that story, those are not the words of mark robinson. You know my words, you know my character and you know i have been completely transparent in this race and before. Clarence thomas famously once said he was a victim of high tech lynching. Well it looks like mark robinson's, two, by a man who refuses to stand on stage and abate me about real issues. Instead they want to focus on salacious tabloid lies. We are not going to let them do that. We are staying in this race. We are in it to win it. Donald trump who has endorsed mark robinson has not said anything regarding the cnn report and these allegations. The trump campaign released a statement that said in part, president trump's campaign is focused on winning the white house and saving this country. North carolina is a vital part of that plan. We will not take our eye off the ball. As a reminder of just how strong donald trump's endorsement of mark robinson was, there is campaign released this digital ad replaying all of the times donald trump did have something to say about mark robinson. Mark robinson is out there. A very good man. This is martin luther king on steroids. I think you are better than martin luther king. I think your martin luther king times two. I think he will go down as one of the great leaders in our country. I've gotten to know him and he is outstanding. He is probably even more outstanding in heart. We have to be very, very careful. Professor greer, so, mark robinson is trying to spin this as a smear campaign from his democratic opponent, josh stein, and blaming it on a. I. , but let's talk about how cnn verified this online user was tied to robin. The report says in his profile he listed his full name is mark robinson and disclosed a private email address robinson used elsewhere online. In 2012 a user responded to a comment by calling him mark. The comments were made under the username minisoldr, a monica robins and used frequently online. He mentioned being married for 18 years which corresponds to robinson's marriage with yolanda hill in 1990. In 2011 minisoldr wrote he had been married 21 years. Minisoldr wrote in a 2011 post that he lived in greensboro, north carolina, the same town where robinson lived at the time and currently lives. I went through all that, professor greer, because our robinson's denials going to be enough? no, but i don't necessarily think that is the strategy he and the republican party are going for. We know that supporters of donald trump cannot be moved. With him at the top of the ticket they are hoping his coattails will be strong enough to extend this salacious scandal that hit north carolina. Don't forget that pretty soon, tomorrow, absentee ballots go out to military personnel. At some point in time even if he is removed from the race, his name will be on the ballot and will have to figure that out and it opens the claims for republicans if they don't when the gubernatorial race to say it is fraud and democrats have taken it from us. So they are kind of teeing that up, which we know republicans especially donald trump have been doing this entire campaign season. Sadly it is the citizens of north carolina who miss out. The more time we spend talking about past practices, as important as they may be because this is a man and a party trying to take rights and freedoms away from individuals while they do things in the dark. It still takes the issue off from what is best for north carolinians. What is best for economic interests and rights and freedoms as they try to take away civil rights and civil liberties from all north carolinians under the guise of some sort of moral superiority, which we have seen time and time again republicans fall short. In robinson's reaction video he likens himself, i am sure you heard this and your eyebrows arched up like mine, to conservative supreme court justice clarence thomas, saying he is, quote, a victim of a hightech lynching. Will that work with his conservative base? you know part of it might work with his base because we have turn have seen them turn into sycophants. What makes me angry honestly is there is no such thing as a hightech lynching. A lynching is a lynching and for those of us who know the history in this country and what has happened to black men and how they were brutalized in families and communities came as if it was a public event. This is nowhere near what is happening to him. He has brought this upon himself. He liked to go to particular websites for quite some time and give all his personal information and say wildly inappropriate things and now his chickens are coming home to roost. We know that history especially in north carolina of what lynching has been and sadly continued to be under the dangerous rhetoric of donald j. Trump. We are going to have to leave it there. Do you feel like that message is resonating with texas voters? i think it is personal for her because she believes strongly in the constitution and if you were a true conservative, you believe in the rule of law, you believe in the constitution and you stand up for those things and that is what ted cruz tried to overturn in 2020. Certainly i think it is resonating because these are also some of the folks who elected me to congress. Folks who maybe voted for george w. Bush or voted for mitt romney, but are looking and not seeing their values reflected in this version of the republican party. That is also how we will beat ted cruz. Democrats, yes, but also independents and republicans. Congressman, this is when i knew that your race was seriously one to watch and i mentioned that it is not great when an incumbent is polling below 50%. Donald trump's own cocampaign manager posted this online on saturday. Timestamp, 4:18 a. M. What is wrong with the senate race in texas? i think i know and i think i know his name. Time to get some real professionals into save ted cruz. This led to a lot of folks to believe he was talking about cruz's campaign manager, jeff rowe. I bring all of that up. It sounds like you have washington republicans worried. They should be. There was a poll today that showed me leading in the race and we will beat ted cruz. Polls only say so much. What we have to do is get folks out to vote. That is why i hope folks will text and get involved in this campaign. All of this new polling was done after the presidential debate in which kamala harris had a decisive victory over donald trump. In the new york times national poll, kamala harris and donald trump are tied among likely voters. 47% to 47%. But the real gains have been made in the battleground states. Two new polls in pennsylvania show kamala harris ahead of donald trump within the margin of error. The new york times, harris leads 50% to 46%. Quinnipiac university, harris leads 51% to 45%. Two other polls show a statistical tie between kamala harris and donald trump. The washington post shows both candidates tied at 48% and marist poll shows both candidates are tied at 49%. There is also new polling in the battleground states of michigan and wisconsin. Quinnipiac polling of likely voters in michigan show harris at 51% and trump at 46% and pulling of likely wisconsin voters shows harris up 49% and trump at 48%. All of these polls are within the margin of error. And in the seven battleground states say they will vote for harris while 12% say they will vote for donald trump. Joining us now, simon rosenberg, democratic strategists and author on substack. By the way, good job. This is our own inside joke. Folks at home don't know what happened. A new ap poll shows voters have a more favorable view of vice president harris than they do of donald trump. What do you make of the vice presidents favorability numbers? should we take stock in that? we should because what we have seen in a lot of polling as she is in positive territory in what is called favorables and unfavorable's. And we, conventional wisdom in political science and politics is that we may never see a president or presidential candidate ever get into positive territory again because of the polarization of the country. She is consistently pulling in positive territory. Governor walz is also pulling in positive territory and trump and vance are significantly disliked now. Why does that matter? with undecided voters, one candidate is likable and people have good vibes and others that they don't. So this will matter in the home stretch. We are focused on the blue wall states and battleground states, but let's talk about iowa. Donald trump's lead in iowa is shrinking. Among likely voters, donald trump leads vice president harris by just four points. That same poll showed trump leading biden by 18 points in june. How do you read that poll? is iowa in play this election? listen, i think we are getting some wild data. The campaign got what they wanted out of the debate. They wanted this contrast between her strong, steady leadership and his extremism and ugliness and it changed the election. We've seen in the polling since the debate that she gained a few points. We have battleground states now. States outside the battleground where she is at biden's numbers or even better in places like iowa. So the election has shifted. This is slipping away from trump and we should feel good. We have a lot of work to do, but i will tell you the thing i am really focused on right now is some of the polling you showed. We had really good polling in pennsylvania and also the last six independent polls in north carolina she is tied or ahead. Republicans have no map unless they win both of those states and both are trending in the wrong direction. So you think this election is slipping away from trump. I want to raise a concern of mine and that is i am worried about a bradley effect and for the youngsters watching, the bradley effect refers to tom bradley when he was running for mayor of los angeles. This was in the late 70s or 80s. A long time ago. A long time ago, kids. Before election day he was leading in the polls. I left out the key piece. He was african american. Would've been the first african american mayor of los angeles and on election day he lost and what we discovered was people said nice things and said they would support him to pollsters, but got in the voting booth and did the opposite. Is there a concern of a bradley effect facing vice president harris? i think the concern is what happened in 2016 and 2020 when there was a concern that trump over performed and i think the campaign is being very mindful of this. We don't really know whether or not this time trump will over perform. The problem for trump and the republicans is that since dobbs they have been underperforming. Trump underperformed in 19 of 20 primary states, where he did worsen the actual vote than he did in polling. What has been happening with the republican party since dobbs, as with the fascist parties in europe and france is when people have been going to vote, we had the opposite of the bradley effect. Republicans and independents have not been wanting to vote for the extremists. So in 2022 and in elections since dobbs, we have over performed while they have underperformed and i think the explanation is the inverse of what you said, which is republican and independent voters don't want to pull the lever for the extremists and have been underperforming. We will find out on election day, but i think it is far more likely in my view that this election performs the way all these other elections have been performing and we end up over performing public expectations.
